Totally recommend choosing a fandom you are obsessed with! I think it helps with the determination aspect haha.

Also if it’s a ball shape, that’s probably the easiest thing to start with. Like Kirby or like a Voltorb. But if you really want to freehand, I usually go by shapes, starting with the biggest one first.

Don’t be afraid to frog/redo things! And it’s ok if you want to move on. I have a box of unfinished projects lol, but I’ll get back to it when I feel like it. Just remember to jot down somewhere the hook size you used and maybe the yarn if you run out.
