The Rhodes Flair Connection Warnings: injury • angst • hurt/comfort
Pair: Cody Rhodes X Charlotte flair
Plot: When Cody Rhodes opens SmackDown with a high‑stakes title match, Charlotte Flair is right there backstage, steadying him with a kiss and a promise. But as Cody’s night spirals into chaos, Charlotte hides her own fear — and a dangerous secret — to keep him focused. After Cody’s brutal match, Charlotte walks straight into an ambush meant to destroy her chances in the Queen of the Ring tournament. Injured and alone, she limps to the ring anyway, fighting through agony as Cody watches helplessly from backstage. When the damage becomes too much, Cody rushes to her side, carrying her to safety as emotions finally break open. Surrounded by friends — and even Liv Morgan checking in — Charlotte finds comfort in Cody’s arms, realizing she doesn’t have to face anything alone anymore.
okay so… this is just a little one‑shot wouldn’t let me breathe until I wrote it. the drama, the angst, the comfort — yeah, it had to happen. hope you love it, because my mind definitely had fun with this one.🤍😊❤️
Not nervous pacing — Cody Rhodes didn’t get nervous — but the kind of pacing he did when he was trying to stay laser‑focused. Rolling his shoulders. Adjusting his wrist tape. Running strategy through his head.
Charlotte watched him from the doorway, arms crossed, one hip leaning against the frame. She loved this version of him — locked‑in, determined, championship‑ready.
“You’re going to wear a hole in the floor,” she said.
Cody turned, and the second he saw her, his whole face softened. “Hey, darlin’.”
She stepped inside, closing the door behind her. “You ready?”
“As I’ll ever be. Gunther. Sami. Chaos. You know how it goes.”
Charlotte rolled her eyes, smiling despite herself. “You’re ridiculous.”
She straightened the collar of his jacket, smoothing her hands down his chest — slow, familiar, grounding.
“Cody,” she said softly, “you’ve got this.”
He leaned in, forehead touching hers. “Stay back here for me?”
She kissed him — soft, quick, enough to steal his breath.
“Good luck,” she whispered.
Charlotte jumped back like she’d been caught committing a felony.
Alexa Bliss stood in the doorway, eyes wide, grin evil. “I KNEW IT! I knew you two were sneaking around!”
Cody rubbed his neck. “Lex, it’s not—”
“Save it,” Alexa said. “Everyone knows. Literally everyone. The only people who think it’s a secret are you two.”
Charlotte groaned. “Alexa—”
“Lovebirds, Cody’s on in five. Charlotte, stop making out with the champion before his match.”
Cody laughed — the first real laugh he’d had all day.
Charlotte grabbed his hand. “Win.”
He walked toward gorilla, adrenaline kicking in, heart lighter than it had been in weeks.
Because Charlotte Flair had kissed him good luck.
Charlotte and Alexa stood at the monitor, arms crossed.
“You’re gripping your wrist tape like it owes you money,” Alexa teased.
“You kissed him before the match. You’re allowed to be obsessed.”
Charlotte didn’t answer — because Cody had just stepped into the ring.
Gunther chopped him so hard the sound echoed backstage.
“You okay, Mama Flair?” Alexa asked.
“He’s fine,” Charlotte said too quickly.
Then Gunther got violent.
Charlotte’s jaw clenched. Her fingers dug into her arms.
“You’re gonna break your ribs if you squeeze any harder,” Alexa whispered.
“He’s taking too much damage.”
Then Cody hit the Cutter.
Then Gunther hit the lariat.
Charlotte inhaled sharply.
Then Sami got powerbombed.
Charlotte stepped forward like she was about to sprint to the ring.
“Whoa— he’s okay,” Alexa said, grabbing her arm.
Then Cody hit Crossroads.
Then the ref sprinted down the ramp.
Charlotte finally breathed.
“You can unclench now,” Alexa said.
Then Cody restarted the match.
Charlotte froze. “Cody… no…”
Sami hit the Helluva Kick.
Charlotte gasped, hand flying to her mouth.
“I’m going to kill him,” she whispered.
Cody stumbled backstage, dazed, bleeding.
“Cody… baby… look at me.”
He leaned into her touch.
Alexa smirked. “And you two STILL think you’re subtle.”
Charlotte ignored her — she was too busy holding Cody like he was the only thing in the world that mattered.
“I can walk,” Cody muttered.
“You’re walking crooked,” Charlotte shot back.
Alexa trailed behind. “You two look like a married couple leaving a wedding reception.”
Charlotte dragged Cody to the trainer.
“It’s nothing,” Cody insisted.
The trainer cleaned the cut. “Just a butterfly bandage.”
Charlotte exhaled — relief she didn’t want him to see.
“You scared me,” she whispered.
He pressed his forehead to hers. “I’m okay.”
Charlotte sat on the bench, hands clasped so tightly her fingers were pale.
She knew what was coming.
And she wasn’t telling him.
Alexa paced. “You’re shaking.”
Charlotte forced a smile. “Hey.”
Alexa smirked. “I’ll leave you two alone before you start making out again.”
Cody crouched in front of her. “Char… what’s going on?”
He’d fight all three of them.
“It’s just the tournament,” she lied.
“You’re Charlotte Flair,” he murmured. “You don’t get scared of big matches.”
He kissed her — soft, grounding.
“Go get one step closer to your crown.”
She walked toward gorilla.
“You funny,” Jade smirked. “I hear you… I’m leaving.”
B‑Fab kicked her surgically repaired knee.
Charlotte screamed, collapsing.
Michin grabbed her ankle.
Jade stomped on the knee.
Charlotte’s scream echoed down the hallway.
“Good luck out there, Queen,” Jade said.
Charlotte couldn’t breathe.
And her match was thirty feet away.
Cody sat with Jey when the replay aired.
“That’s my girl,” Cody smiled.
Cody shot to his feet. “WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!”
“She didn’t tell me,” he whispered. “She knew. She KNEW.”
Charlotte limped down the ramp.
“She’s hurt,” Cody whispered. “And she didn’t tell me.”
“She tough,” Jey said. “She gon’ fight.”
“She shouldn’t have to fight alone.”
Charlotte limped into the ring.
Alexa stood up. “CHARLOTTE, YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO THIS!”
Nick Aldis shouted, “We can call this off!”
Liv went straight for the knee.
Cody flinched. “Stop—please stop—”
Charlotte fought back on one leg.
Cody whispered, “That’s it, baby…”
But Liv locked in the single‑leg Boston Crab.
Charlotte screamed — raw, agonized.
“Tap, Char,” Nick begged. “Don’t let it get worse!”
“Go to her, Uce,” Jey said.
Alexa helped Charlotte up. “Easy— I’ve got you.”
Cody slid into the ring like he was diving into fire.
“I’m here,” he whispered. “I’ve got you.”
He carried her to the trainer’s room.
The X‑ray showed a contusion — no break.
Relief washed over everyone.
Back in the locker room, the door shut.
Charlotte’s breath hitched.
“Talk to me,” Cody whispered.
“Char… you don’t have to be strong right now.”
Sobs shook her entire body as she buried her face in his chest.
“It hurts,” she cried. “It hurts so bad…”
“I know, darlin’. I know.”
Alexa rubbed her back. “You scared us.”
Jey walked in with her favorite iced coffee. “I come in peace?”
Charlotte sniffled. “Is that for me?”
“You family,” Jey said, setting it down.
Then Liv appeared in the doorway.
“I didn’t know about the attack,” Liv said softly. “I’d never try to actually hurt you.”
Charlotte’s eyes softened. “Thank you.”
“If you need anything… I’m around.”
Alexa raised her hand. “I’ll yell at Jade.”
Charlotte leaned back against Cody, sipping her coffee.
“You scared me tonight,” he whispered.
“Don’t apologize. Just don’t walk into something like that alone again.”
She turned her head, brushing her cheek against his.
“I won’t,” she whispered. “Not anymore.”
Alexa grinned. “Awwww. Gross. I love it.”
Charlotte laughed — a real laugh.
And for the first time all night…
