J.D. Salinger / The Catcher in the Rye
Don’t you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you’re not taking advantage of it? Do you realize you’ve lived nearly half the time you have to live already?
Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises (via wordsnquotes)
The Month that Was: July 2017
Looking back at first I thought that not much happened in July. I stayed close to home, didn’t do a lot. But really, thinking back, quite a bit happened. None of it big or super exciting but little things add up.
It was a month of crepe myrtles and sunflowers and cicadas and sitting on the porch and complaining of the heat and driving around Virginia.
Around the house I painted my dining room pink, flamingo feather to be exact. I’m not sure that it will stand the test of time but for now it’s kind of fun. And it looks good with my houseplants.
I’m fostering a kitten that will eventually go live with Caleigh. She’s a tortoiseshell, very crazy and very adorable. Caleigh is naming her Nellie but I call her Ruby.
We closed on my father’s house. It’s a bittersweet pill to swallow. I’m glad not to have to be responsible for it anymore, I’m glad that all of the cleaning and the repairs and the upkeep are not mine to deal with but it’s another piece of my father that is gone forever. Each step forward requires losing another piece of him. Death is a bitch.
I like to pretend that I don’t watch much TV but I must say that I am so happy that Game of Thrones returned to the airwaves in July (oh how I missed Jon Snow). Fear the Walking Dead, Orphan Black, The Great British Baking Show and The Mist also all kept my attention (though The Mist is turning out to be addictively bad).
During the month of July I read three books, bringing my 2017 total up to 20 books! I set a goal for 2017 to read 15 books so I’m kind of amazed with myself.
Arrowood by Laura McHugh.
American Fire: Love, Arson and Life in a Vanishing Land by Monica Hesse.
The Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon
I visited Caleigh’s new apartment (adorable) in The Fan and we ate lunch at Garnett’s. The cheese plate, always the cheese plate, with three cheeses, strawberry coulis, spicy walnuts and toasted crostini. So good! A Farmers Salad with romaine, apple, cheddar, bacon and sesame dressing. And a slice of pie with crumble split between us to finish it off. I could eat at Garnett’s every day.
I went up to Fredericksburg for an afternoon to see Madison’s new house at UMW, walked around historic downtown, stopped in Eileen’s Bakery and Café (an old church, now a bakery, so cute!) for a Pecan Marzipan Cheese Danish. We ate lunch nearby at The Mason Dixon Café. Deviled eggs for an appetizer and the Jive Turkey (makes me think of WKRP in Cincinnati) for my meal. Grilled Turkey with Provolone, Stuffing and Cranberry Relish on a grilled Croissant.
Zach and I drove down to Norfolk for a funeral mid-month and walked down memory lane in Winona. Everything seems smaller there than when I was a teenager but still the same in many ways too. Ate lunch in Ghent at Cogan’s Pizza where I had the Wild Mushroom Artisan Pizza (pretty good but too many scallions).
Also made a drive up to the Northern Neck to do some yardwork at the cottage that hopefully will sell soon, again with Zach. Took the two car Sunnybank ferry across the Little Wicomico River just for fun. On the way back we stopped in Tappahannock for lunch at Northern Neck Burgers. Super slow service but the food was good. I had the Chicken Sandwich with Applewood-Smoked Bacon and Pimento Cheese and a side of Boring French Fries.
Closer to home, literally in my neighborhood, I ordered carryout from The Mill (I love their food but not a fan of the cramped dining area). Got the Turkey Blue Plate which was like Sunday dinner memories on a plate…roasted pulled turkey breast with mushroom gravy, roasted garlic mashed potatoes & vegetable of the day (green beans on that particular day). I finished it off with a slice of key lime pie. Heaven!
Also in the neighborhood Zach and I stopped by to see Jordan at Stir Crazy Cafe and have lunch. I had the Stanhope Panini … Mozzarella, spinach and sun dried tomato relish with chips. A nice light lunch.
Considering my usual fare is either eating at home or the occasional visit to Panera or Chick Fil A or a Domino’s pizza I actually ate some tasty food last month,
Even with all of that good eating – or maybe because of it – I went to the gym consistently all month, met with my trainer Millie (she’s the best) and got caught up with some past due health screenings. Making all kinds of efforts to be a healthier person.
So July is done, hello to August. Summer is my least favorite time of year so I’m happy to be midway through it.
We don’t pay enough attention to things in our lives. We know that, but we still don’t do it. Only after something’s over, or someone’s dead, or we’ve lost them, or it’s just too damned late do we realize we’ve been speed- reading life or people or moments and missing all the great details.

in Savannah part 1
Not too long ago I took the train down to Savannah for a long weekend. The train ride was a bit of a let down which was sad because I usually love riding the train. But nine hours in an aisle seat in a hot, crowded and noisy carraige was not a fun trip. No, not at all. Train ride aside though it was a pretty awesome long weekend. My favorite thing by far was discovering a semi-secret alternate universe of old treasures on floor after floor at Alex Raskin Antiques. It was like tumbling into another world and I could’ve spent every minute of my time there and been completely happy.
I’d admired this house before while in Savannah but had no idea of the magic inside...
If you’re ever in Savannah and you enjoy traipsing around an amazing old crumbly house that is full to the brim with treasures and mystery then head to Monterey Square, look for the antique shop tucked away on the side of one of the prettiest houses around and head on in. You’ll need to find the stairs with the door at the top. It looks like it’s off limits but it’s not...that’s where all of the good stuff is! I can’t wait to go back again one day.

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.

that weekend in november...
A little while back I spent a long weekend at the beach. Thanksgiving on the Outer Banks. Lazy days spent strolling the beach and daydreaming to my hearts content. Even lazier nights spent reading and falling asleep early. Getting away from it all is one of my favorite pastimes ever.
Some people are made stronger by loss. Others are broken by it.

Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.

a sunday in February
Last month it snowed. In fact it was a snow storm. Over a foot of snow fell during the day and all through the night and then all into the next day. Winds blew and the house shivered and yet today, just a few weeks later, it is all melted away and it feels like spring. I’ve think it’s the snow falling that I love so much - the gray skies, the swirly flakes, the magic in the air and the coziness indoors. I don’t love so much the next day when my car is buried, I have to shovel my way out of my cozy home and the sun is glaring and making my oh so lovely snow appear harsh and cold. If only there could be snowfall every day and never would it pile up...what a dream.
I’m becoming a little bit fascinated with tarot cards and oracle cards and the like. When I was a little girl I had an aunt that had a deck of cards and I truly thought that they could tell the future. Recently in New Orleans I had my cards read by a free spirited girl on Frenchman Street named Caroline. She didn’t tell me my future but she had some lovely and lively insights. She also carried a bottle of Jack Daniels in her purse, told mesmorizing stories of learning to read the cards at her mothers knee in Jackson Square surrounded by lost souls and described an altar she keeps on her mantel for a dead lover. But I digress...I bought a deck of The Wild Unknown cards a while back simply because the art work was so lovely. Then a little spark got going that had been glowing for years, probably since I was a little girl looking at that deck of Rider-Waite cards in my aunts room. I recently picked up a set of Enchanted Map Oracle cards and a beautiful Black Lily deck on etsy from Aya Rosen and I’m ready to see what the cards hold. Not so much to tell the future (because that would be wishful thinking...or dangerous business!) but for reflection and introspection I suppose. Where will this lead...I’m curious to see
In addition to some more serious college courses that I’ve been taking lately I picked up a Floral Design class this semester. So much fun! A class that requires that you arrange flowers and then you get to take the arrangement home? What’s not to love? I may just become a florist and add that to my list of adventures in life...
Yes I do, I do love New Orleans.
I should’ve expected that we’d drift apart. I should’ve expected that we’d talk less. I should’ve expected to miss you this much. I should’ve, I should’ve, I should’ve, but I didn’t.
