By removing the unnecessary space at the bottom of the images the rope is now more clearly the focus of the image. Unfortunately, especially in the first image, the shots did not have any more space at the top. The closeness of the rope to the top of the images causes an unwanted visual tangent, which ultimately flattens the images.

I decided to borrow a friends camera, at the pub with a group of friends, and take some impromptu photos. At first it was just for fun but then I realised that as people were interacting with one another and not paying much attention to me, they were giving me shots that I would otherwise not be able to capture. Eventually people caught on and I had to shoot less obviously, but I was still able to capture people off guard. This tended to produce photos that seemed more "real" and honest to me. The lighting in these room was simply gorgeous. The roof was lined with multiple soft lights that gave warm colours without the room being too dark.
I attempted to capture Rex's concentration whilst he was trying to work towards a deadline in a room full of noisy people. The picture show a large empty space with nothing but his own head and a light. This I was trying to relate to his attempts at blocking out and clearing his mind of all the surrounding distractions (the empty space) and focus on one thing, his task (the light).
In hindsight I think a better execution of this idea would have been capturing Rex's head with a shallow depth of field such that the active people in the background were blurred out of focus.

The combination of the reds from the lights and the blue from the sky, combined with the out of focus approach here, gives me a feeling of warmth and relaxation.
I attempted to take some photos of Squash players during their matches. My idea was to capture the intense nature of the game by taking shots of the more desperate plays people attempted. This however proved more difficult than expected as the moments tended to happen more quickly than I could prepare for. I was also at a disadvantage due to the distance at which I had to observe from. I captured only two images out of about 45 that I believe were any good at all.
I like this first image in that you can see the speed at which the player has swung from the blur of the racquet. And also the desperation of the manoeuvre as is evident by the impending collision with the wall. After playing with the levels and contrast I settled on this as it gave the caged part of the wall an interesting texture.
This second image I much prefer out of the two. This is one particular player's stance before a rally has begun. The combination of the angle of the photograph and the direction of the wood floor panelling, enhances the viewer's understanding of the ferocity of the players gaze, as he prepares to receive the ball. I added the black top and bottom strips in order to further express this idea of straight lines.
These are my favourite images from the Poi spinning experiments. I think the circle patterns work well when viewed together.
They almost seem as if they could have been drawn by hand, as a circle drawn by hand is rarely perfect and people tend to circle again and again. When the drawer lifts their pen the image is not of one perfect circle but of many imperfect circles. Yet the mind can blur the individual circles, in a desire to see a true circle, and thus the desired effect has been achieved.
Appart from the first image the patterns in these images are broken and the images on the whole look grainy. This was because for these images I had discarded my makeshift tripod and started shooting by hand.
These too didn’t make the cut in my opinion. However I did like how the “sparks” that appear on the outside of the circles appear to give the pattern an extra sense of speed. Like the tyre of a car spitting dirt, or an angle grinder cutting, they seem to add an extra element of intensity to the images.

These I enjoyed. Unlike the other Poi pictures, in which the focus was solely the light patterns, I believe these ones share the focus. Most pronounced in the first image, you can see the silhouette of Rex. However in order to truly share the focus of the images, I think that Rex's silhouette would have to be slightly more pronounced in the rest of the images. His outline can be seen, but not enough to challenge the attraction of the light patterns.
These too suffered from not being either circular enough or producing interesting patterns. All but one I was indifferent to.
These did not work so well. this light mode did not seem to create coherent circles. The last two images turned out as expected. However they suffer the same problem as the first set (Too much light, not enough focus on the actual patterns).
This was the start of my experimentation of Rex spinning his Poi in my hallway. These have interesting colours, however I do not believe there is enough focus on the light itself. Too much of the physical hallway and Rex can be seen, and this detracts from the effects of the light that I was going for.
The intention here was to capture the movement of the staff at various points in time as it was swung. Swinging the staff naturally did not work. The image of the staff wasn't persistant enough in any one location to register in the photograph. I requested Rex employ a jagged technique as he swung and this seemed to work much better.
The originality of using christmas lights like a jump rope is the 3rd thing I was attracted to in this image. I find that original ideas for photographs often make me think, this gives me a greater appreciation for the photograph and the photographer. If the intent of a photographer was to engage a viewer cognitively, and it does, then the photo is a success. The 2nd thing that attracted my eye was the repetition of the geometric shapes caused by the spinning. These types of images can be thought of more like drawings or painting with light. The lines and colour created by the light are the subject of this image, the people are more or less immaterial to the image. Also the angle of the shot is very important. The shapes created here would only work from specific angles. The fishbowl lens used not only allows shooting from this difficult vantage point but also helps to exaggerate the circles. The 1st thing I noticed was the intensity of the colour. The colour contrasts well with the dark surroundings. The strong red, pinks and oranges give the picture a excited, energetic feeling as opposed to blues and greens which invoke an introverted feeling.
