it should be noted that the valtersens are a pretty infamous family in pleasance but by no means in a good way. known for their unfortunate shortcomings, tragic history and grim hearsay, they’re often poorly looked upon by their fellow neighbors. this reputation having been created by the series of events below.
llika “lily” valtersen, youngest of the two sister, was born on september 14th, 1996 in a remote location. the only knowledge she has of her mother is that she carried and birthed her several months later. you see, the whereabouts of the valtersen mother is unknown. no one really knows what happened to her except for the father, who does not allow for inquiries, nonetheless dare to give any substantial information.
speaking of this foul human, one could say that the father began to drink due to whatever unfortunate event surrounding the unknown whereabouts of his wife, but the valtersen daughters would tell you otherwise.
mitch always had a mean streak. cursed with fits of rage, he didn’t much mind expressing his discontent either through verbal or physical violence. oftentimes, he would find himself behind county bars. unsurprisingly, his record is littered with crimes from assault to theft.
he sadly didn’t hold back these tendencies even when it came to his children, lily and lyra. the two girls often found comfort in their own familial bond and wherever one went, the other was sure to follow.
lily grew to be the quieter of the two; always allowing her sister lyra to take lead. in fact, she appreciated this quality about her. they weren’t entirely opposites but where they were, they complimented each other quite nicely. when lily was frightened over their father’s wrath, she would even crawl into bed with lyra who stood as an unbothered safe haven among the storm.
during adolescence, lily began to explore different interests in an attempt to find which spoke to her the most. photography classes at the local high school, attending book clubs, and even volunteering at the hospital. it was during one of her trips that she began to experience feelings she had never felt before. attraction… and to a girl.
on the other hand, lily began to feel shame boiling up inside her. over time, her own turmoil with her internalized homophobia led to her isolating herself. however, lyra could sense this shift in lily and after one night of confronting her about it, lily expressed that she was, in fact, attracted to women.
over the following years, lyra built lily’s confidence back up and taught her to be accepting of herself just as she always had been with others. still, lyra warned of entering into a relationship with a woman while still living at home, for fear that their father would wreak havoc.
months later, lyra valtersen was reported missing… she had disappeared one night after having gone to bed. the breeze from her window startled lily awake and when she crept into her sisters room to find lyra’s bed empty, she immediately called the police who arrived moments later.
deputies reported the fathers odd disposition and even expressed concern to child protective services. however, despite the reports, the search parties, the anonymous callers on the hotline for the missing valtersen daughter, there was no such luck for lyra valtersen. a year later, the case went cold and lyra valtersen was presumed dead.

lily suspects her father to have played a huge role in the disappearance of both her mother and her sister. worse yet, she fears she is next.
when she turned eighteen, she began to attend therapy as a means to create a paper trail if she ever went missing. the abuse, the rampant controlling behavior of her father, his past indiscretions, her missing mother and sister, everything having been expressed to her psychologist. no one knows this is her reasoning for seeing the doctor
she attends pleasenace’s community college and works a part time job at roots gas station. these things, too, being a calculated and precautionary measure. a means to be expected by others.

quite literally is never home. if she is, there is usually someone to accompany her. in addition, she tries her best to find a place to spend the night vs. being at home in her own bed. especially given this was the last time she saw lyra before she vanished.

has made plans to move out of her father's place, but she's fearful to do so. one, she's never been on her own and two, she's unsure if she could ever escape her father and their reputation.
visits lyra’s memorial every day no matter the inconvenience. she likes to read les miserable to her ( their mutually favorite book ) or will tell her all about the sort of day she had, any troubles, accomplishments or worries.

often has dreams about the dog that she had growing up. she also can’t remember what happened to him.
