Beatrice Melbourne QC (Julia Roberts)
Born: August 1938
Daughter of a Welsh-born Physicist Arthur Melbourne and an Italian Photojournalist Giorgia De Santis, she grew up travelling with her Mother through the war often times being left in bunkers with friends in the event that the latest assignment was too dangerous. Given her part-British background, the one place she never visited with her Mother during that time was Giorgia's homeland. Eventually she elected to stay with her Father full time, finding the time with him more stable and appealing to her as she developed a better idea of what she wanted to head towards with her schooling, a decision which eventually saved her life as her Mother was shot dead in Hungary in 1956 covering the revolution. She met Beauregard through their Fathers in the weeks following her acceptance to Cambridge University. Her Father had worked at the University for some time before taking a position as a Professor and was very enthusiastic when, at sixteen, Beatrice was accepted to his University. Despite her romance and early evolving family life with Beauregard at the tender age of nineteen, she managed to continue through her Law degree and take on a position in one of England's top law firms.
In 1980 she received a letters patent from Queen Elizabeth II to become a Queen's Counsel.
As a Mother, Beatrice is strict but affectionate. Though she had no intention of having any more children, happy to have a boy and a girl, she loved them both dearly and was always eager to set aside time for them as they were growing up. Her relationship with Septima was always encouraging. She wanted both her children to have some sense of the freedom she experienced as a child, even though her work commitments meant they rarely travelled. Even when her daughter began to display intriguing 'talents' Beatrice didn't bat an eyelid, her focus and ability to go with change as it occurs make her more reliable during those times. Particularly for Septima who generally likes things to remain as they are.
Prof. Beauregard Vector DSc. (Hugh Laurie)
Born: June 1936
Youngest son of renowned Theologian Aldous Vector and former Opera singer Dame Vanessa Bligh. The youngest of five children, Beauregard often got away with murder. With a wicked sense of humour and a knack for getting himself out of sticky situations, he was often left to his own devices and disappeared on his own wild adventures throughout the town with nobody knowing. Though girls were often interested in him, his boyish charm always captivating them, he wasn't too interested in them in return. Throughout his teen years unless a girl could make a scientific reference, he wasn't keen. That was until he met Beatrice. When the two were introduced by their Fathers he assumed her another ridiculous girl and went about his usual trivial nonsense to at least look like they were getting along, only to be shot down as soon as she opened her mouth. It was her ability to always surprise him that kept him coming back for more, their relationship growing over the years until eventually it led to an uncomfortable conversation with her Father upon finding out she was pregnant.
As a Father, Beauregard loved spending every moment possible with his children. Even if it was just a case of having them laying on his chest, as a baby, while he read through his study notes. He was always happy to have them hanging off him or crawling over him as they got bigger, but when push came to shove he was also good at disciplining them. His easy going nature meant when he was suddenly getting angry his children knew they had done something wrong and would stop. For him, Septima is his little girl and he wouldn't have it any other way. It helps that, unlike the rest of her family, she is short so will indeed always be his little girl.
Cassius Vector (Henry Cavill)
Born: February 1957
Septima's only sibling, Cassius is one of the few people that will make her feel comfortable in any situation. The world is much easier to deal with when her big brother is around. He's always looking out for her and happy to teach her new things, just as he is happy to learn new things from her. While many non-magical children would feel jealous of a sibling with magic, Cassius decided when his sister got her letter to attend Hogwarts that it just proved she was as special as he always said she was. While he's not really into science and maths like his Father and Sister are, he's always happy to be part of their conversations - particularly when they endeavour to help him understand things without making him feel inferior in anyway. In turn, given Septima's not one for art appreciation unless it's "geometrically pleasing", and art is his area of expertise, he likes to help her expand her mind in that area. They can spend a lot of hours in art galleries, cinemas, and concert halls studying the various mediums of art together. As long as it brings her attention to new things, Septima always finds it fascinating.
Septima Vector (Lily Collins)
Born: December 1959
The seventh of her Paternal Grandparent's grandchildren, and the youngest of her generation, Septima was doted on from the time of her birth. A curious little girl, she was often caught following the bigger children (particularly her brother) where she shouldn't. Trying to climb trees, crawling through brush, etc. On one occasion when her brother and two cousins decided to play on an old tractor, she climbed up with them and when - without a key - the engine suddenly began and drove them about she had a particularly bad feeling it was her fault. Luckily when the tractor stopped itself by driving into a ditch and flinging the children off, no one was hurt. Years later it would occur to her that this was her first use of magic.
Prof. Aldous Vector ThD. DPT. DLitt. (Anthony Hopkins)
Born: March 1905
The Patriarch of the Vector family and Septima's closest confidante, Aldous is always eager to spend time with his grandchildren. In turn Septima's eagerness to learn attracted him in her first few months and as she grew the pair became as thick as thieves. Through Aldous, Septima learnt the importance of respecting another person's opinion and to open herself up to new experiences without judgement. It was his love of sports that led to her love of Cricket and Rugby. However, they did stop going to the racetrack when a horse about to take over the horse they bet on suddenly stopped racing when Septima yelled 'no horsey!' amongst the crowd. After collecting their winnings, Aldous and Septima quickly left.
