Moi-même-Moitié founder asked to step down from Gothic & Lolita Bible

This is my first formal post and it comes with some heavy news.

I don’t expect anyone else here to be gravely shaken by this information; as far as I know I am one of the few gothic lolitas in the community. However, I feel that it is important that we bear witness to this historical event in the fashion that we all love.

Mana, founder of the iconic gothic brand Moi-même-Moitié, and creator of the term “EGL” (Elegant Gothic Lolita) has been asked to permanently step down from creating and modelling in his spreads in the GLB.

While both Angelic Pretty and Baby the Stars Shine Bright did exist in the 1970’s and 80’s, (long before Moi-même-Moitié) the clothes that they designed were similar to the style of Pink House and resembled prairie style dresses.

Mana, guitarist of the visual-kei J-rock band Malice Mizer, was credited with the “creation”**of the modern lolita silhouette when he donned a knee length velvet and lace one-piece with OTKs and platform maryjanes in 1998, during his band’s “Bara no Seidou” era. This is the bell-shaped silhouette that we are still teaching in lolita 101 panels today.

Whether you believe the hype that Mana founded modern lolita fashion or not, we cannot deny that he certainly popularized the fashion. The Angelic Pretty and BtSSB we wear today would look very different without the popularity of EGL in the early 2000’s.

I’d like to think that anyone who has been in the fashion since the days of old school would find this to be significant… It almost feels like an attack on gothic style as a whole to me. Baby and AP have never been big on gothic style and it has largely been their competition. I feel like they find it easier to simply try and monopolize lolita I mean they are the big trend-setters. Black Peace Now, H Naoto, Atelier Boz…gothic brands have been dying and it’s no surprise. Without Moitie where will gothic even come from? Halloween prints are even getting cuter and cuter. Buy a black dress and that’s all you have to work with for gothic? I think this is very sad news.

I’m not involved in lolita anymore, but as someone who still loves the style and gothic fashion, this is really unfortunate. Any word on exactly why Mana was asked to step down? There are some things I’m still not clear about– is the entire Moitie brand going to fold? Or is Mana just not going to be involved with the GLB anymore?

For those still reblogging and those who may be out of the loop, there have been a few significant updates that have been very surprising and positive for Moitié.

It was recently announced that Wunderwelt’s parent company has acquired Moitié as whole, though Mana will maintain creative control in some capacity. We’ve already seen exciting new releases in the form of smartphone cases and branded wallets/card cases.

ALSO, Mana and Moitié (along with Wunderwelt) have announced their guest status at the 2018 Sakura-Con in Seattle, WA in late March.
