My logic is this, I can't sum it up in under 140 characters, sadly, so I've re-awakened my decrepit old blog in order to elaborate. [It should be noted that prior content within said blog is in no way an accurate representation of the bloggers current viewpoints, although excellent taste in art is to be expected.] ************************************ When you go to the cinema, you go to watch ideas. Some of those ideas will be controversial in context. Some of them religious, maybe. Sometimes these ideas feature in the films (do you start to ban those films too? Where do you draw the line?).. Heck, they feature in the Christmas adverts we see on TV. Now, we are all reasonable people, more than capable of discerning whether something is distasteful, unpleasant, offensive. But once you start deeming minor things as potentially upsetting, that's when you create a culture unable to deal with being offended. You start teaching people that their opinions are the only ones that matter. Did you not listen to Steve Hughes? I know you did. ("I went to a show, and the comedian said something about the Lord, and when I woke up in the morning, I had leprosy!" 😱) If the advert in question was regarding something like ISIS, I'd completely understand. But it's not. And while you say that the cinema is a "place for all people" there is nothing exclusive about the advert in question. It may not apply to all people, but we shouldn't be afraid to see other people's beliefs on screen. We should accept them for what they are. It's not advertised as fact. It's not demanding you believe anything. If it was an advert promoting Sikhism, Islam or the Tao, I would not be offended either. (It may help if you actually watch the advert first, and then make a decision.) It's short, and religious, but it's also remarkably well directed. In a sense, it.. Art. All ads are a form of propaganda. They all have an agenda they want to promote. Whether it's for money, politics, cosmetics, charity, or something like this. The reason the UK cinema board took the advert off was because they don't as a company want to be associated or seen to represent the CofE, which on the one hand, is understandable.. But frankly, cinema is a great way to get people to engage with their surroundings. To inspire conversation. It's not a bad thing when you get someone to think. There are far worse ads out there. Personally I'm allergic to the Lynx ones. Body spray as a way of legitimately picking up infinite hoarders of women? That offends me hahaha. 😄 We're not quite that basic! (it does smell good though....) Advertising is a really fascinating topic. The way people perceive the semiotics of something is crucial to the decisions we make in life. This is an advert that has had no complaints against it. Were it deemed appropriate, you never know; It may have been the difference between life and death for a suicidal person with nobody to turn to. TLDR: Options. We should not live in a society where the board of cinemas have no problem releasing a film where somebody has to rip the skin off their own scalp to escape a burning bed (Saw4), or adverts where women are portrayed as only valuable for their outwards appearance, but personal beliefs are deemed potentially offensive. You're a free person, we don't live in an Anthony Burgess novel, and you have the power to turn a blind eye. We should be accepting of one another and we shouldn't give two hoots. 🙂✌️ Unless we live in a totalitarian state, then FIGHT THE SYSTEM, FUCKERS. I wash my hands of this. I need a brew.
