Pierrot you poor baby, the fact that when the afterlife gets brought up he immediately hopes his parents are in a beautiful place is so sad but I wouldn't have expected anything less from him. He's very caring. He just wants to see his parents again. (Also the fact that he doesn't mention spending time in the afterlife with MC reinforces the fact that that he hasn't even fathomed MC dying.) 😭

The Patreon user "loh_nol" I literally give you my sincerest thanks for asking about the biology aspects of monsters' mating!! And the fact that Neko goes into so much detail too?! Holy!! 🙇🏻‍♀️

Ya'll. Ostriches aren't the only birds known to show attraction in humans. Just watch this 15min video: "The Science Behind Why Birds Find Us Attractive" and you'll get it. I feel like, out of all monsters, perhaps avian monsters would have the highest percentage of them possibly seeing humans as a mate/romantic and/or sexual partner. This doesn't mean every single bird-like monster will have romantic/sexual interest in a human, but I just think it'd be more likely than other monster species. 🐦

Not Neko laughing at being asked about the sensitivity of monsters' horns! Before this AMA I headcanoned that some monster horns had sensory receptors, so the fact that Neko delves into much more detail is very much appreciated!! Some monster horns having blood vessels while others can feel vibrations from impacts that resonate through their heads is most fascinating!! Also I definitely believe some (if not most) horns would act as erogenous zones, but I'll make a separate list just for monster worldbuilding HCs bc I absolutely love worldbuilding!! ✍🏻

Alr most species and subspecies of monsters go through mating cycles (heat/rut) but not all. Perhaps the species most similar to human biology (source) may be one of these species that do not go through mating cycles? Love the variability of the length of monsters' mating cycles ranging from monthly to half a year!! Also the fact that their bodies undergo changes like longer claws and horns, shinier fur, increased aggression?? I absolutely adore this sm!! Really brings out my animal nerd side out!! Also, hm, some can become rather peculiar? I'm curious about what that might entail! 🥰

Harlequin definitely goes through brumation and I'm ecstatic bc we finally get confirmation of it!! Hm, I think Jester and TT would purposefully plan the circus' routes so that Harlequin is able to go through his natural stages to keep him healthy, like going to specific countries that do experience all four seasons around the time that winter starts!! ❄️ ... Also once snakes come out of brumation, their mating season starts bc of the rising temperatures signalling hormonal changes (source)! ☀️

I honestly expected Harlequin to at least mention Pierrot's tent so I found it interesting how he mentioned liking Jester's attractions! Tho, now that I think about it, it makes sense that the two youngest members (source) may find similarities in each other! 💚💜

Really enjoyed the long and detailed ask about Mexico!! I find it delightful when ppl share their cultures and that the cast would know what they're talking about bc they're a traveling circus who has crossed the globe multiple times!! Also just made a list of my HCs for Doctor using many references from this AMA! 🇲🇽

Found it interesting how Pierrot has full faith in Doctor's capabilities when it comes to treating chronic illnesses. I find his specific wording of "Doctor should be able to give [Pierrot] a few tips..." very nice bc it highlights Pierrot's view on Doctor! Meanwhile on the other hand, Doctor's fully aware of the limits of his knowledge and expertise and isn't afraid to admit he doesn't know how to help. It seems like he'd try to lessen the pain/discomfort as much as possible seeing as how he offered sleeping pills to likely ease any agony. ... Maybe I could even read into how treating symptoms in general is more characteristic of monster society as a whole while certain individuals would rather figure out a solution to the root cause. 💊 To clarify, I mean Jester building the circus and running it knowing all the risks involved (but it also comes with its upsides, high risk high reward, yk?) rather than what I think what other monsters would do; by hunting using more... traditional methods. 🎪

Also ty Neko for the crossed out questions! It does make it easier to see which questions the members are answering!

The fact that Ticket Taker knows and is "quite good" at waltzes just reinforces the gentlemanly aspect of his personality! Tho, do not be a fool and think that he is a gentleman~ He has so much more lying underneath the surface and I'm so intrigued by him and his character! Leaves me wanting to know more!! 💙

Jester's totally making an insult about intelligence when being asked about the concept of love being "eat or be eaten!" I can just hear his voice dripping with condescension as he says, "I apologize, I had not realized my history would be so difficult for you to understand." 🧠

Kinda surprised Harlequin didn't say anything about being called a "green menace," is it bc the word "dear" was added at the very start, perhaps? Also, yes, you definitively have to be quite forthcoming and true about your intentions with him otherwise he'll twist and spin your words to throw them back at you. Tho I do agree with his sentiment of being able to verbally say what you want. If you're vague, that leaves room for misinterpretation and that can quickly turn into a not-so-safe situation. 💬

Ooo!! More monster worldbuilding; love to see it!! Let me just ingrain those three categories into my brain real quick. I believe Doctor, Pierrot, Jester, and Harlequin belong to the second category of rational monsters who think and speak almost like humans despite not looking quite like them while Ticket Taker belongs to the category of monsters who appear almost entirely human. Definitely some prejudice towards... dull-claws, hm?~ 👀 That's a √Destiny reference btw.

I actually adore the fact that there's some discrimination in monster society! Bc it's a society, they're bound to have social rules and customs just like animals do; including humans!! I can clearly visualize TT being faced with some mistreatment when dealing with the black ticket guests, tho I believe a certain other member may face some too (just a different kind of treatment) given his more monstrous form invoking more fear than the others (source). 🎩💉

Doctor has wings, doesn't he? He uses them to help set up the circus, doesn't he? I go into more detail here in my list of HCs for him! 🪽

"The amount of food that is healthy for [Doctor] for him to eat is slightly higher than for the others [...]" ... How much is 'slightly higher'? Like a few more kgs? 'Cuz the range difference of the 25-40 kgs that the troupe eats at a special meal (source) is quite large imo. I do believe the lower end of the scale is when they have scarce resources while the higher end is when they have an abundance. Maybe their usual amount is something around the 30s? 🥩

Doctor Headcanons! 💉

Doctor loves it when the circus is planned to be in Mexico in late October/early November bc that means he gets extra days to go out (instead of just Halloween)! He considers it an excellent birthday gift for him since his birthday is October 30 (source)! Harlequin likes dragging guiding the Doctor around the city/town (source)! 🇲🇽

Doctor uses his wings whenever something needs to be hung up from the tent ceiling during setting up of the circus! Maybe he even flies in short bursts during these times seeing as how the circus always sets up everything at night (source)! 🎪

His smaller tent is the medical tent—the one with clean and proper medical instruments—and it's connected to his main cyan performance tent (source 1, source 2). 🩺

For regular meals where the circus consumes more typical food, he's pretty neat, but when it comes to the "special meals" where the cast eats "special meat," he's a messy eater and tries his best to be patient, waiting for everyone to at least be done half of their portions before going for seconds (and more), but his appetite is insatiable and the others all understand his healthy requirements are higher than theirs so they always save a kilo or two for him at the end (Source 1, source 2, source 3, source 4). 🥩

Because Doctor doesn't interact much with the public/humans in general, he interacts with his family the most and they speak Portuguese in private, Doctor always refers to the others by their true names in his mind like Bilheteiro and Arlequim instead of the Ticket Taker and the Harlequin (source 1, source 2). 🇧🇷

More HCs under the cut! (CW: mentions of blood, non-consensual use of drugs, allusions to sexual content)

Doctor's fear of Pierrot bc Pierrot might take actions he can't predict and that it could cause something he wouldn't be able to fix (source) started after Pierrot broke many of Harlequin's bones and left him bleeding "enough for it to become genuinely concerning" (source). 🩸

The Doctor has needles specifically designed for monsters' thick skin! Most monsters are hesitant/wary of needles because they're not used to inoculations, but Doctor's very good at explaining everything in great detail and ensuring his monster patients are calm and informed throughout the entire process. 💉

He has lots of experience with piercing syringes into humans without them noticing bc he does it often enough with the pink drug to humans who are "hallucinating things that don't exist" as written in his tent's contract for an individual consultation. 📜

The monsters can all tell when a human has engaged in masturbation or sexual activity and knows when a human female is ovulating due to a multitude of factors, but mostly scent. The second a human steps into his tent, Doctor will know, but won't mention it unless prompted. 🗣️

Doctor would have no problem with anyone having small and/or deep veins for bloodwork!! Tho I'm unsure as to whether he would have a butterfly needle on him ready to go in his tool belt. 🦋

Bonus hc!

When it comes to those special meals, the troupe gathers around and enjoys themselves, having fun like friends hanging out over a shared meal! Their seating arrangements aren't always the same and if Harlequin and Pierrot sit next to each other, Harlequin teases Pierrot but he doesn't egg Pierrot on enough to do more than brandish a knife in warning. Everyone enjoys their special meals, especially Jester because he loves when his family is enjoying themselves together! 🍲 🥘

Hi Destiny! Harlequin hc of mine! 🫶

Since his parents were good but inattentive and didn't know how to be parents, I think Harlequin's basic needs were provided for (food, water, shelter, etc.) but his emotional needs weren't. My evidence is the way he describes his relationship with his parents as perfectly natural, keeping their independence and rarely interfering with one another's affairs. 🥩

I acc have no idea if Harlequin has siblings or not since he didn't even allude to them when asked, but if he had siblings he was def overlooked. I personally hc he's an only child bc the way he describes his relationship with his parents is awfully close to my experience (as an only child myself). Both options would explain his desire to be truly seen! 💚

Maybe he got lost as a child bc his parents were inattentive and that's how he found Pierrot? 🤔

First, I will preface by saying that I like it when the relationships are left ambiguous!! Whether it be platonic, romantic, familial, sexual, and/or more, I absolutely adore it when the relationships are left up to the player's/reader's interpretation!! I will say I like writing ambiguous relationships, but I tend to lean more towards the platonic and familial aspects as I favour exploring those sides a bit more!! ✍️

That being said; I like Diamond mirror, Greenapple, and Dr. Pepper!! 😁 I acc have no idea why Greenapple is named this way bc I just see it as Harlequin with his green and candy apple but I like the ship name and think it's adorable! 😊

Will admit most if not all of my HCs for those ships come from Destiny but let's see if I can make up some original ones...

Diamond Mirror headcanons! 💜💙

When they go out to visit museums and art galleries, Jes is usually the one that talks a bit more as he takes the lead in the conversation and Bil provides his own commentary to the exhibits he finds interesting but is more often than not just responding to Jes's comments 🎨

Sometimes they just read together in the private area at the back of Jester's performance tent. Ticket Taker's books on economics and ethics are tucked safely in Jester's bookshelves amongst his strategy, psych., classic lit., dark fiction, horror, and history books! 📚

In the early mornings in the trailer, while Ticket Taker eats a light breakfast, Jester's sitting across from him sipping on a strong coffee and reading the news, both just peacefully coexisting in the same space. After TT's done eating breakfast, the two then discuss the day's itinerary ☕

A genuine smile crosses Ticket Taker's face when Jester addresses him as "meu Bilheteiro" 🇧🇷

If not for Jester, Ticket Taker would have pulverized the Harlequin ages ago (he wouldn't actually kill him, but the damage would be long-lasting and traumatic) and lost himself in grief over Columbina 💧

Greenapple headcanons! 💚⭐

Harlequin was an anxious and fear-filled kid and often gripped onto Pierrot's arm or hid slightly behind him when he was feeling particularly afraid. This doesn't happen at all anymore in the modern day, but if Pierrot isn't being deliberately antangonized by him, sometimes, if he really listened for it, he can hear the slight difference in Harlequin's breathing and how his heart beats just a bit quicker and he just knows Harlequin's feeling nervous and afraid, but is doing his best not to show it 😓

Third on the list is a greenapple headcanon 🌶️

A major reason why Harlequin antagonizes Pierrot so much is because he knows that if he didn't, Pierrot wouldn't ever seek him out out of his own volition after what he did that moonless night. Harlequin's heart would actually crack and fracture if Pierrot didn't so much as spare him a glance after all they've been through together so... as long as Pierrot still looked at him, it was okay. Even if his eyes are full of hate now and he'd never see Pierrot ever direct a genuine, warm smile towards him ever again, it was okay... right? 🌑

Another reason is because he wants to be punished for the actions he committed that night and what better way than to have his childhood best friend beat him until his breath turns to wheezes? But also his grasp on love is so twisted that he takes all of the assault with a grin laced with masochism on his face as he fights back against Pierrot 🫁

He does genuinely like teasing Pierrot because his face is so expressive and Harlequin enjoys seeing his reactions, a habit built from childhood. His favourite memory of teasing Pierrot is bc it reminded him of the first few times Pierrot started baking when things weren't so rough between them (or at all, maybe Pierrot started baking before the ringmaster?) and also bc Harlequin's love language is quality time ⌛

Sometimes Pierrot looks at the blood staining his black gloves after a violent fight with Harlequin and wonders where and when it all went wrong. Was it that moonless and starless night? Was it before when the humans and the ringmaster arrived? ... Was it when he started... developing feelings for... Columbina? 😟

If Doctor isn't sleeping that night (like due to an experiment) and it's cold and it's not Harlequin's turn to sleep in the trailer, Pierrot will slip inside Harlequin's green tent (that he calls his den) when he's either half-asleep or fully asleep and will just lay on his bed of blankets and not 20 seconds later Harlequin will have unconsciously sought out Pierrot's warmth and snuggle into his side. Pierrot's always concerned when Harlequin's tentacles struggle to wind around his body and they're frigid cold like ice, much like the rest of his body, and he just pulls him in, cuddling like they used to when they were sleepy children all those countless nights ago. ⛺

Dr. Pepper ❤️💚

Harlequin only likes the cold up to a certain point bc it means he gets to just initiate a hug/any physical contact with the Doctor with no explanation required. However, if he gets too cold, he'll just fall asleep and would pout internally at not being able to savour every second of the warmth and steadiness of the Doctor like he's a warm rock in the sun 🪨

Bc of Pierrot and Harlequin's constant fights that often left Harlequin worse for wear, what started out as a way to repay the Doctor back for all the bandages and equipment he'd needlessly expend (even tho Doctor never once thought like that), Harlequin began to enjoy trying out Doctor's remedies! Tho... after The Incident™ Harlequin started taking them in private and now only reports the side effects. 🧪

When the location the circus is in experiences all four seasons (including winter) and the winter months are approaching, Doctor can be heard saying something along the lines of "Quim, it'd be best if you listened to your body's natural rhythm and take a nap" every day, especially around the afternoon. There's a greater chance of Harlequin listening to the Doctor and heeding his advice if there's lots of sunlight beaming down onto the circus grounds. ☀️

Harlequin enjoys watching the Doctor's experiments, finding amusement in just observing, tho sometimes he does help when the Doctor asks him to hold something in place while he stitches a doll up. 🪡

He finds it amusing that the Doctor can recite the biological processes of reproduction and the mating and courtship rituals for every single animal out there by heart yet has no personal experience in anything of the sort. 😘

When he discovered monsters could get cancer, Doctor could tell Harlequin was worried by his nervous body language, especially when he asked how many monsters the Doctor's seen with cancer, how likely it is to get it, and how to prevent it. 🧬

After the taste of sriracha changed, Doctor specifically scoped out and went out of his way to retrieve a bottle or three of the original taste without Harlequin's knowledge. It's not often that he does this, but when it's just those two and Harlequin's being difficult, Doctor will procure a spoonful of this sriracha as a source of motivation for Harlequin to cooperate. He always does, eventually. 🥄

I'm a very avid follower of canon so I used what available info we have as of now to create these HCs and a few of them are from my longfic!! But whew, these HCs sure do take a lot of brain power and I can def understand why Destiny refers to her "#tfc headcanons" tag if anyone's asking for general headcanons. 😅

Also yes I did kiss the wall of bricks I threw. 🧱

But also I do like taking all of you for an emotional roller coaster. 🎢

Alr so it's been exactly a month since I provided the first ever link for @destinysquared in this post and genuinely I never thought my life could have changed so much from just that one simple action!! 🌐

When I first started commenting links to Destiny's previous thoughts and headcanons, she was the first person to reply!! Always with enthusiastic thank-you's and appreciation, which motivated me to keep on doing it!! 😁

It took about 10 days for other users to reply to me with their own thank-you's messages and to this day they still warm my heart!! 💗

And after reading this post by Destiny where she answered an ask on how to gain confidence on publishing fics, developing a platform, and provided a general guideline to advertise said fic in the tags, I decided to follow her instructions and made my first post here on Tumblr! ✍️ Matter of fact, a major reason as to why I made a Tumblr account was bc I was already clicking onto the preset search "destinysquared tumblr" to read her new posts in the morning while I eat breakfast and just figured, "yk there's an easier way to go about this" like a week into this routine😅

Then I saw how many of the more recent asks she got were eerily similar to ones she's answered before in previous months and decided to make a post on how to search on her blog in hopes of helping others! And wow I did not expect Destiny to even see the post much less reblog it in under five minutes. Genuinely her speed is insane and I still smirk in amusement when ppl send in their asks to her, they get answered at the speed of light, and ppl are baffled in the replies. 😂

I think it's really funny when I just see a waterfall of asks getting answered at like 1am and I do sometimes wonder if those posts were specifically scheduled for that time! 🤔 Destiny does queue and schedule asks; she revealed this when answering a concerned ask about her sleep schedule here! Read the replies I find them funny 🤭

After gaining a bit more confidence from actively engaging with others, I started interacting and being more active with the fandom across social media platforms!! 🐦

Truly, the experiences I've had will continue to shape me for the better so I hold this fandom in a very special place in my heart!! 🥰

And bc I'll never pass up an opportunity to show my gratefulness, I wanted to thank Neko once again for creating such a wonderful game (and his efforts as he tackles all of his tasks and responsibilities holy he's actually the busiest person ever) and all the mods for building and cultivating such a welcoming and friendly fandom!! Yk how Harlequin's always an octopus as a mer? 🐙

Recently relearned just how awful and traumatic an octopus' life experiences are and immediately started thinking of how I could give Harlequin so much angst! 😁

Keep in mind this is tailored list as I cherry-picked what I think may be applicable to a mer!Harlequin! 💚

There's documented cases of octopuses experiencing night terrors (source) 💤

I've seen headcanons of Pierrot's monster form to be some form of otter, so uh, in a mer AU if he was an otter mer, he'd definitely be able to eviscerate him. At the very least, he'd overpower him by a substantial amount. (Also there's the potential of mer!Harlequin always being fearful of mer!Pierrot bc otters are octopuses' natural predators) 🦦

Octopuses have so many predators including but not limited to: sharks, dolphins, sperm whales, stingrays, seals, penguins, sea lions, sea birds (Doctor??), sea otters, sea stars, eels, other octopuses, and humans (source 1, source 2) 🐬

They can get hurt by their own ink if they are self-exposed and can't escape bc a high concentration of ink will negatively impact their gills (source) 🫟

Octopus have three hearts and bc of how much energy it takes to swim, their systemic central heart stops beating when they swim fast (source) 🫀

Octopus can't thermoregulate bc they're ectothermic (source) and it's canon that Harlequin gets sleepy and lethargic in the cold (source) and atp I think it's pretty safe to assume that Harlequin's a snake-like monster, which means he may be ectothermic too! 🌡️

Their average lifespan is 6 months–5 years (source) bc after mating they go through senescence, which is the condition or process of deterioration with age. Males tend to live a bit longer than females, but after mating males tend to starve to death bc of their lack of appetite (source), that is, if sickness or being eaten by a predator doesn't kill them first. 🪦

All octopuses are born orphans bc their parents died before they're born (source) 💀

About 1 in 10,000 baby octopus survive to become a juvenile octopus and the survival rate of octopus eggs to adulthood is less than 1% (source 1, source 2) 😬

Octopus are highly intelligent, have a reputation being the ocean's smartest invertebrates and their brains rival that of mammals (source), and are on the list of the top 10 smartest animals in the world (source) 🌊

When being researched for extended periods of time/in captivity, they display personality quirks similar to that of dogs and cats like excitement, shyness, aggression, indifference, and more (source) 🫣

Columbina Headcanons! 🩷

Obv this includes HCs about Columbina but also some with the others!

Whenever the rare opportunity arose, she'd make homemade bread with Pierrot! 🍞

She's the one who introduced Doctor to Dragon's Blood incense! Since the tree (Croton lechleri) is native to Brazil, Doctor may have come across it before, but Columbina may have been the one who introduced him to the method of collecting the resin from immature fruit and or bark! (Source 1, source 2, and source 3) 🐉

Dragon's Blood is traditionally used for insect and spider bites (source) and abrasions, cuts, and blisters (source) which is why I think Columbina would've at least known about it! 🕷️

She used to regularly drink Brazilian mint (Hyptis crenata) tea with her mother! Traditionally, the tea was used by Latin American healers to cure headaches, fevers, flu, stomach ache, and menstrual pain (source) and she'd drink it often bc of her childhood malnutrition (source) and she was prone to sickness. 🍵

The kind stranger who helped Columbina recover from her severe and prolonged illness was Doctor. The major reason I hc as such is bc the stranger kept their face hidden beneath a hood and Neko has stated that some members 'bumped into each other before they actually met' (source). ❤️

Harlequin thinks his flame died out that moonless night. Completely extinguished. He stopped being himself—changing his entire personality to cope—and he feels empty inside. There's a reason why he excels at fire-eating. Perhaps he's trying to bring that flame back to life inside him, if only temporarily. ❤️‍🔥

Not only did Ticket Taker start talking more and get calmer the more he taught Columbina, he got more patient as well. It's a toss-up as to whether he has a soft spot for younger female monsters who visit the black tent or he's more guarded when interacting with them bc he doesn't want to get attached and suffer another potential loss. 💙

During quiet nights, after Jester became kinder with everyone, if Jester and Columbina were ever alone together out of the others' range of hearing, he'd share brief sentences of his dreams. All of them included them and their family living safely and healthily where they'd never know starvation again. 💜

Pierrot never got to confess his love to Columbina and so that's one large reason as to why he's so eager to proclaim and confess his love to MC. ⭐

When it was just her and the others, it was a common occurrence for her to wake up early to see the sunrise. Sometimes the whole group would watch the sunrise together, but more often than not, it was usually just one other monster accompanying her or she was alone. 🌅🌄

I usually ask Destiny questions since she's a fan who's also really close to the creator, which gives this sense of being closer to the canon. (Although I know that's not always the case, everything that Destiny says should be taken like a grain of salt but I do remember seeing a post where she mentioned that some of her answers are a blend of canon and her own interpretation but again I could be wrong.)

My thoughts & headcanons begin under the cut!

Ooo I love the troupe's dislikes!! I find it interesting how TT dislikes the sea, but he's not afraid of the ocean even tho he can't swim (source). Seeing as how the uniforms themselves are heavy (being tear-resistant), I'm not surprised Pierrot hates getting it wet and weighing him down even more. Hmm I hc Harlequin likes the cold up to a certain point bc that means he gets to cling onto certain members that may be warm-blooded. I wonder if Jester has pyrophobia? Tho in his case, it isn't irrational. Also, does seeing small cute animals perhaps trigger Doctor's prey drive, cuteness aggression, or fascination? Curious! 🎪

I think this is the first instance we've seen Pierrot speaking Portuguese! Love to see it!! 🇧🇷

Jester genuinely does so much for the circus that I think if you just list all of his duties/things he does, it'd probably reach the length of a scroll. He appreciates the results and the circus' achievements so I wonder if he focuses more on the destination rather than the journey (motivation metaphor). Wouldn't blame him if he did bc that's probably what keeps him surviving. 💜

He also really prioritizes and loves his family!! Genuinely it's the first and most forefront thing on his mind. If he could spend an entire day doing anything, he chooses to buy a larger trailer or more!! 💵

Genuinely LOVE the logistics of how often the troupe eats!! I wonder if they prioritize lunch and dinner since, in Brazil, lunch is the most important meal of the day and dinner is a family meal (source). TT has mentioned before that his routine includes breakfast and they canonically have afternoon coffee. Also tysm to Neko for providing the actual amt of 'special food' they eat and how frequent they eat it; honestly helps sm when I write fics as I tend to focus on one of my favourite aspects: worldbuilding!! 🥩

Hmm I wouldn't be surprised if Pierrot knew how Harlequin enjoyed both lemon and passion fruit (source) and made two different kinds of the chocolate dessert!! 🍋

I'm led to believe that he's never received flowers before by the way he dodges that first question. If I wanna go really angsty, maybe the reason why he's 'not particularly fond of flowers' is bc it reminds him of a certain monster~ 🌺 Did yk several species of hibiscus are native to Brazil (source)? Aww Neko!! I absolutely adore the way the game is bc the options the player chooses show pretty subtle changes on the surface (like differences in dialogue) but underneath, there's so many more layers like how it impacts the experience for the rest of the game!! Def enjoy the view on magic in the worldbuilding!! It really solidifies the fact that this game takes place in a world almost identical to ours on the surface!! 🗺️

Despite being the leader, Jester sees himself as an equal to the others and that's quite admirable!! He truly values all of them!! 🟰

I did not expect to also get TT's view on his relationship with Harlequin in the same exact AMA. Also, here's the definition of incorrigible, which broke my heart. He views Harlequin as someone who can't do any better bc he's already done the worst thing. 🩸

I also don't find it a coincidence that a synonym of the word is "hardened," which I think describes all the members, but especially Harlequin. 🧱

Harlequin & Odysseus in EPIC: The Musical

Alr so he's 'skilled with a bow' (source) and 'excels at acting' (source). He also sings from time to time, especially during performances in his tent (source). 🏹

Destiny made a post here about which songs from EPIC each of the troupe members would enjoy the most and since I also enjoy the songs, I quickly connected the details and came to this conclusion:

I'm sure with the right motivation and maybe some more practice with singing (since he says himself it's not one of his strongest skills) he could play a decent Odysseus. 🎶

Ever since Destiny's post (published May 3), I was wondering how to incorporate EPIC into a fic and after it was publicly revealed Harley's skilled with a bow on June 26, I was like "... Yk with all these details, Harlequin could play Odysseus with some practice." 🤔

This will be one of the later chapters (when the circus is about to leave for China) and I'm seriously so excited to write it!! Too bad I have to write all the build-up to make it believable and with actual stakes bc I've been singing certain songs in my kitchen and can vividly imagine all the angst I'm gonna put Harley through while his family's a witness to the whole duet/performance~ 🥰

Leaving the name box blank has multiple options depending on the day 😉

For both days when you select a set of pronouns and then leave the name box blank, you automatically get assigned a placeholder name and I find it fun to know they're all different!! 😁

For Day 1 He/him -> "Master" She/her -> "Mistress" They/them -> "Sovereign"

For Day 2 He/him -> "Mestre" She/her -> "Mestra" They/them -> "Monarca"

It really shows the Brazilian origins of the game (bc Neko and the circus troupe are all Brazilian) and I really enjoy this easter egg!! 🇧🇷

Also I find the translations interesting! "Mestra" and "mestre" both translate to "master," just the feminine and masculine forms of the word given Portuguese is a romance language, which means it's a gendered language (and here's why!). 🌐

"Monarca" expectedly translates to "monarch" and I'm intrigued as to why it wasn't kept the same. 🤔

"Mistress" has two common meanings:

a woman who holds authority/control

historically, it's used to denote the female head of a household

in contemporary usage, it means a woman involved in a romantic and/or sexual relationship with a married man, which has negative connotations

Admittedly, the latter definition was what immediately came to my mind when I read the automatically-assigned name for the first time due to how the term is used in the modern day. But dw, it took only a millisecond for me to recall the other definition for "mistress." 😅

I'm sure Neko means the former definition!! The evidence is in how "mestra" is used instead of something like "amante," which means "lover" (source). 🐈‍⬛ EDIT: Here's the pics of what I'm referring to!!

Deep dive into the circus' sleeping positions 💤

From AMA 1-11:

Back sleepers are said to have more nightmares and right-side sleepers experience more pleasant dreams than others. Oh wouldn't you know, the only member who's mentioned nightmares publicly thus far (in this AMA) alternates from sleeping on his back or on his side. However, sleeping on the back is also associated with self-confidence and back sleepers may be stubborn and have high expectations for themselves and others. 💜💉

Stomach sleepers are said to have more erotic dreams due to the pressure applied on the specific areas of the body. Though, face-down sleepers are also more likely to report dreams of being locked up or tied down, possibly bc of the specific position of the body. Sleeping on your stomach is also linked to defensiveness. Honestly, I find these findings to be quite fitting for a certain troupe member~ Tho I also headcanon that Harlequin mainly sleeps on his stomach because his tentacles are on his back and discomfort can arise from sleeping on a limb(s).

Sleeping in a fetal position (on a side, all curled up) is associated with sensitivity, anxiety, and a desire for comfort with a tendency to overthink things. Those who sleep in a fetal position, while initially shy, underneath they can be quite warm-hearted. Definitely sounds like a certain monster in the circus, hm?~ ⭐

Because there's no details on which side the circus members sleep on, here's some general findings:

in older adulthood, there's a pattern of preferring to sleeping on the right side 🎩

right-side sleepers have higher sleep quality and experience more positive dreams when compared to left-side sleepers

Dreams and sleeping positions are not well-researched and there is inconclusive evidence so there's no comprehensive understanding on the relationship of sleeping positions and dreams. The most widely-cited research on sleeping positions and dream content is from one 2004 survey study at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (found here) and is subjected to inaccuracies and biases because of its nature of self-reported data. 📄

But ofc, this is all for fun!! And I did make sure the sources I used are at least reviewed by professionals like a psychiatrist (MD) and a clinical psychologist (Ph.D). Source 1 and source 2!

Now, onto the worldbuilding aspect! (under the cut bc there's mentions of canon-compliant content warnings)

Sleeping upright is a common practice in the animal kingdom (source) and Doctor does seem to be the most... animalistic in the circus given his silhouette in Columbina's mirror and in brief flashes of the game, and how, in the mods' opinions, his monster form is the scariest. Not to mention being ranked first in appetite and how it took a long time for him to even become aware of humans. 🫀

That and/or Doctor really is just so immersed in all his experiments that he just dozes sitting up pretty regularly. He is one of the ones who sleep the least. 🧪

Alright, time for the horns!

Neko mentioned the circus has a peculiar personal care routine and how their hats are comfy enough to suit each of their bodies. Neko also mentioned in a comment here that the silhouettes from Columbina's era are not to be relied on 100% bc they were all young and mistreated.

My opinion? The more human flesh they consume, the more human-shaped they become to a certain point. Completely covered up, they look human enough and I think their horns are very short. 🤔

Take a look at Neko's sketch of Pierrot and Harlequin in casual outfits here and see how both of them have two head coverings (hat and hood) and especially their side profiles in the upper left corner. I'm guessing their horns may be protruding from their heads just a tiny bit—maybe an inch or less—but not anything more. 🧐

Maybe they even file down their horns or something? Or... had them removed in some way, shape or form?

All in all, I think their horns are definitely a lot shorter than what is garnered from Columbina's mirror and even Harlequin's paper puppets!! That's probably why they can sleep on their side or on their backs!! Tho I'm not sure if Doctor has horns.

I'm wondering if the horns under Jester and Pierrot's hats are more centered on the top of the head and just a smidge to the back so they can comfortable sleep on their side and/or on their back.

Harlequin has two longer strands of green fabric on his jester hat running down the sides of his head and I wonder if it may be bc his horns may start just above the ear and so his hat differs in design from Jester's and Pierrot's? These green strands of cloth are also present in his old, original circus outfit. 🟢🔵

It's either that or Harlequin doesn't have any ears. 👂

Neko has confirmed here that Pierrot and Harlequin do have ears and that they're just well hidden. Snakes don't have external ears (like how most mammals do) but they do have internal ear structures! Fun fact: snakes 'hear' through their jawbones; they detect low-frequency vibrations through their jawbones and then transmit the soundwaves to their inner ears! (Source) 🐍

It could be either Harlequin's horns start at a different point than the others and/or he has no external ears and he needs to hide this better than the others, hence why his jester hat is designed a bit differently. The placement of the horns would also explain why he prefers sleeping on his stomach too. 💚

Yk those convex security mirrors used for surveillance? The circus has those and TT's like their security system; all he needs is a small pocket mirror to tap into whichever specific mirror!! 💙

Doctor has hollow bones like birds do so while he can easily overpower a human, that's how J, H, & P beat him in raw strength! 🐦

If/when Pierrot's feeling nostalgic, he cooks spicy food so he can see the look of genuine happiness on Harlequin's face. ... Or maybe whenever Pierrot needs reassurance that Harlequin hasn't completely changed from their time before the ringmaster 🌶️

Pierrot hates cooking spicy food bc the capsaicin always travels up his nostrils and he sneezes and coughs into his elbow but cutting garlic doesn't make him cry!! 🧄

"Balada" by Gusttavo Lima (a Brazilian pop song) is one of Harlequin's fav songs!! I've heard that it's quite popular in Brazil; could def see it being played at Carnaval; and one of the lyrics' direct translation is "If you look at me, I'll not resist" 💚

What I think the circus' trailer is like 🎪

Because I'm a sucker for domesticity and require a reference, I looked through many different floorplans of several Catalina RVs (yes ik there's other RV brands but I physically cannot subject myself through more eye strain) and found a trailer with a layout I like that complies with canon information! 😌

Here's what we know about the trailer (publicly-available info at the time of posting):

Major things I inferenced from these are that the trailer has one bed, a small kitchen (tho I have no frame of reference for what Pierrot would call a 'small' kitchen), and a bathroom. 🛏️

So, here's the floorplan of a 2026 39MKTS of Catalina's Destination Series that I will now be following loosely for my fic(s):

What's great is that the site has a 3D explore feature of the actual trailer so I could gauge the dimensions and actually see how it'd be like inside!! 😁

I like the two entry ways into the bedroom bc it means it can be accessed both from the inside and outside. Also, if any member does get sick, all they'd need to do is close the interior door so the rest could still use the trailer without risk of infection. 🤧

... I also needed to use my trusty measuring tape to actually visualize what a 48in x 30in bath tub's like and I think it's a bit small for the Doctor and Pierrot and maybe even Jester. So maybe they got a bigger bath tub that's like 60in x 40in (5ft x 3'4'' or around 153cm x 102 cm) so those monsters specifically could shower comfortably. 🚿

Oh and replace that glass sliding door for the shower. I feel like that got broken (likely accidentally) in like the first year they got the trailer so now they just use a shower curtain. 🛁

And following the 3D view of the trailer, the entertainment centre has no TV and I believe that's accurate given the circus likes more traditional things (source) and they're not used to watching TV shows (source). 📺

Make the bed an actual king size so it has dimensions of 76in x 80in (193cm x 203cm) or even a California King of 72in x 84in (183cm x 213cm) because 72in x 74in (about 183cm x 188cm) would probably not be comfortable for the majority of them given their sleeping positions (source) and like, who wants a bed that's too short for them? 😐

Anyways, using this to write the next chapter of my slice of life longfic~ 💖
