Generali Tower is within the CityLife masterplan that has redeveloped Milan’s abandoned trade fair grounds following the fair’s relocation to Rho Pero in 2005. Located above the new Tre Torri station on Line 5 of the city’s metro system, CityLife opens the 90-acre site to year-round public use for the first time; providing new civic spaces, public parks and residential areas, in addition to shopping districts and corporate offices.

The tower houses up to 3,900 employees to meet Generali’s continued growth as one of the world’s largest financial institutions. The tower’s double-façade of sun-deflecting louvers flanked by glazing provides extremely efficient environmental control for each floor and ensures excellent energy performance.

[...] Inclined perimeter columns follow the twisting geometry of the tower to mirror the inclined alignment of its external façade units. These perimeter columns also maximise usable office space within the tower’s coherent formal envelope.

M House is a minimalist house located in Melbourne, Australia, designed by DKO. The kitchen space features porcelain ‘Maximum Moon’ throughtout, blacked out custom cabinetry with a black kitchen island that achieves a strong “masculine” look. In addition, dark concrete floors promote the ambiance of the space while the lighter wooden dining table creates warmth. Large glazings adjacent to the kitchen provide abundant natural lighting into the kitchen.

Premaydena House Misho+Associates

The Premaydena house sits on a low podium on a largely wooded site on the Tasman Peninsula, south east of Hobart. The site faces north, on an inward curve of the peninsula, to Norfolk Bay. The clients came to the architect as the latter had already designed a house for them in Sydney. That house, framed by recycled timber screens, had in turn been inspired by a balsa model, by the architect, displayed at a Greenbuild Expo in Sydney several years earlier. This model expressed ideas the architect had been considering for his own house – lightness and light, simple module proportions, screening and layering. When the clients bought the 19-hectare site at Premaydena, the architect was asked to design a house based on the same principles.

The modular of course has many precedents; it is still such a successful planning system as it offers, at least, transparency of technology and minimal use of materials. In the Premaydena house, the modular - boxes within and beside each other – generates a series of elegant living spaces that provide respite from the external elements and, in homage to the chashitsu, opportunities to re-engage with daily rituals
