I’M NOT SCARED!
I sometimes try to eat rats sideways.
It never works, and I get frustrated and give up.
If my keeper is lucky, I drop the rat outside of a hide.
If he’s not, I hide it and he thinks I ate it until it rudely starts making decomposing smells a day or two later so now, he doesn’t trust me to take food into a hide or eat where he can’t see me and digs through my entire enclosure to make sure I didn’t just hide it. :(
This week, I flopped into the water bowl and tried to eat it sideways and am back in my hide where he’s sure I’m just going to drop the rat later.
Warning: Pics under the cut show a snake trying to eat a bloodied (blood does tend to come out of their noses and mouths as they go from frozen to warm again), pre-killed rat sideways; if you don’t care to look at that sort of thing just move along.
Three modes:
1) Periscope.
2) Pretzel.
3) Explore!
My keeper says I’m doing it backwards. :(
This is an older picture of me, but my nose is very cute in it.
I missed. :(
Not only did I miss, I tried to swallow my keeper’s finger and got up to the first joint before I realized something was wrong and this wasn’t a rat.
Mostly, I realized it because rats don’t normally take me out of the cage and squirt my mouth with water to make me let go.
I missed the rat three times prior to this despite it being nearly touching my nose, and didn’t even tag the hand that was holding the tongs, I launched myself clean out of my enclosure to bite THAT finger.
...not sure what I was thinking.
I guess I’m glad my keeper stays calm when things like this happen and didn’t try to pull his finger out of my mouth, because that might have broken some of my teeth.
I grew a lot over the last few months and I’m too big to fit in my favorite log hide now.
I only kind of fit.
I’m still here!
My keeper has been doing things like, “going to bed at a reasonable hour” for awhile so it’s not often we’re awake at the same time.
I’m nocturnal, and he doesn’t like to wake me up during the day unless it’s necessary. It’s also too cold to go outside anymore, and that was usually the main reason he’d wake any of us up during the day.
Lately, I’ve been naughty about eating; I’ll take the rat and act like I’m going to eat it, then take it into a hide and drop it. If he notices right away and hands it to me again I’ll eat it, but if he doesn’t--well--he’s got pretty good at checking all my hides the day after a feeding just to make sure I’m not hiding a dead rat that will start to smell awful after a couple of days.
Hello Piesnake. I'm going to be getting a ball python in a month or two and was wondering what kind of substrate you and your human prefer.
My keeper usually uses Ecoearth as it’s easier to keep humidity up and harder to get it to mold.
He covers that with a few layers of dried magnolia leaves and has various sized cork bark tubes, flats, and plastic hides as well.
Trying to convince an adult, previously only live fed snake to take F/T like
My keeper has been there before with one of the two older ball pythons here!
Psst.
Got any rats?
Just hanging out!
I spent some time on the desk. I didn’t make too much of a mess.
The head of a normal, the body of a piebald!
A small blep.
I see you there, pointing that black rectangle at me...
Checking out some fresh water.
