waiiit omg thinking about what Doomguy's life would be like had the events of Doom never occurred is so interesting. What's your takes on what life would be like for him? Oh and maybe Internguy and VEGA too. Would they still meet up somehow?
Tbh I don't think it would be super interesting, or at least, not narratively satisfying. Doomguy (normalguy?) Would still punch his commanding officer and get sent to Mars for it, but... then no demonic invasion would happen. He'd spend the rest of his tour on Mars bored out of his mind before eventually going home. Maybe he'd reenlist, maybe he'd get a more normal job, but largely, he'd live out a comparatively normal human life and die a comparatively normal human death. Punching his CO would be the most eventful point of his life, and I think he'd spend the rest of it with a perpetual vague sense of dissatisfaction, like he could've done more.
He'd never meet the intern. I know the Doom I snes manual was never officially approved by id Software, but it says Doom I happens in 2022, and I like to accept that as headcanon. Meanwhile, Eternal takes place in... 2146, iirc? 2140- or 2160-somethin. Definitely more than 100 years after 2022. Normalguy-Doomguy is already aged and dead by the time the intern is even born, and the intern never does anything so illustrious with his life. Or maybr he does, he's gotta be pretty smart to have made it into ARC's command center, but without the 14-year-long invasion after Doom '16, ARC is never formed to combat it, and certainly never takes on any interns.
VEGA and Hayden wouldn't even exist. Without the first invasion, there's never a threat of additional demons lurking on Phobos, so Doomguy is never sent back to deal with the Mother Demon or Sister Ressurector, and he never vows to stay in Hell, never goes mad, and Hell never spits him out into Argent D'nur. As a result, he doesn't accidentally lead the Khan Maykr to Hell, so there's never an invasion on Argent D'nur, either, and the Khan Maykr never discovers Argent Energy. The Khan continues her long-con of promising people heaven and then yoinking their souls when they die to feed Urdak, and maybe that would eventually come to light and cause conflict with the Night Sentinels, but without Doomguy, Davoth never has anyone to leverage against Urdak for his revenge, and without Argent Energy, the Father never has any reason to be worried Davoth is doing anything, and so he and Samur stay in Urdak, never going to Earth to become VEGA and Hayden.
So I think that a world where the invasion doesn't happen ultimately remains pretty stagnant, with a lot of characters dissatisfied and no conflict resolution.

doomguy w/o the doom. just guy. guy and his bnuy
guy who has no problems ever
apparently ive had this in a sketch file since 2021? the funniest part is that theyre actually pretty easy to beat, once u figure out how to stunlock them
it's been just about one (1) year since you finished htpas
how do you feel
Immediately? Mildly miserable because of allergies, and my brain is sludge. But otheriwse, im excited to get to work on a new longfic. im just waiting on the dark ages dlc to come out to see if there are any major lore things i wanna incorporate, n then i'll be good to go!
I know this isnt a thing that Doom really does to begin with, but i think the harbor of souls level in TDA would've been such a good opportunity for diegetic gameplay. Some bits of the hud are def already canon, multiple characters throughout the series acknowledge the waypoints system, VEGA adds to the hud in the beginning of 2016, and the intern comments on Doomguy's mission objective in TAG2. But Doomguy doesn't have his helmet in the harbor of souls, so what if you just got rid of the hud entirely? "But what about your health-" i mean, hes already dead at that point, what are they gonna do, kill him more? Sure, keep the effects when you get hit, but you don't need to see your health if you can't die. Or better, they shouldve had an invisible health tracker that, when you died, still played the game over animation, Doomguy dropping his gun and falling over-- and then just getting up again to keep going. He already did that at the beginning of the level, why cant he do it again! I just think it wouldve been a really neat way to use the gameplay mechanics to emphasize that he simply refuses to Stay Down, even for death.

How would you feel if they revealed that because of hell time shenanigans the cosmic realm was actually urdak in the future post tag2 and the old one was the final form of transfigured samur
Personally I think they should give him a new secret identity every game and also have him die anticlimactically every game
What if every character was just Hayden
realistically, i think that would be Terrible and I Would Hate It. i've had enough of hugo's "but ACTUALLY, x was really y the whole time!!!1!" bs in eternal and especially tag, and it would make an even bigger mess of the lore.
u do make a compelling point about hayden though. we should get to beat him up every game, it's what he deserves.
PSA: For fan works, reblog and like from OP
Tumblr is rolling out a new reblog/notes system that completely disregards creators. In their new system, they're taking a twitter-style approach where reblogs will have their own notes that DO NOT contribute to the original post's notes.
Because of this, creators will no longer be able to see an accurate display of likes/reblogs/etc. This is completely altering the way feedback and responses to works are going to be received on this website.
If you come across a fan work that you enjoy, please take the extra step to go to OPs original post, and leave your comment/like/reblog there. Or go one step further and send an ask to OP directly to tell them what you liked!
I really hope Tumblr staff reverses course and reverts to the original reblog system for the sake of the large base of creators who use this site to share their works, but until then, please be considerate and make sure the creators here see/feel the love.
Hello pikkish I see u want people to talk to u heloo hi yay
Ur kinda the doom authority to me (the only way I interact with the doom fandom at all) and I will say that I personally get very little replay value after I've already finished the games (2016 eternal and dark ages), like once I've gotten everything I find it hard to go back and replay it. Kinda like botw and totk if you've played those, like the first completion is fun but then anything after that is just kinda boring?
Was wondering if you had any thoughts on replay value in videogaming and weather or not the replay value of any given game adds to or takes away from the overall experience.
Not to make this a whole novel but some games you can kinda play forever, like rougelikes or whatever genre rain world is in, and I always like a game that I can keep playing and collecting and progressing in even after the story is over, ykwim? Which is obviously not what doom (and games like it) are going for so maybe none of this matters!!
hey!! hi!! hello!! i do love getting asks and yelling about videogames, yes, i can't deny that :] n im honored you like my Doom stuff so much!
personally i do get a decent amount of replay value out of the Doom games (and i'd probably be replaying dark ages right now if a power surge didn't blow the power supply on my gaming pc a few days ago,) but yeah, i get what you mean. i don't usually tend to get a whole lot of replay value out of open world games. i play them to go exploring and find exciting things, and once i've done all that and i already know where everything is... yeah, it's not a whole lot of fun to go back to imo.
replay value doesn't contribute a whole lot to my opinions about a game overall tho i don't think. like, id still say subnautica and new vegas are great games and worth the price, even if ive only ever beaten either of them once and don't really plan to go back anytime soon. most of what decides whether or not i replay the game is the mechanics, with story as a close second. for example, obv despite how much of a mess it is, i like doom's story a lot, and i find the combat loop very satisfying in modern doom, especially eternal's, so i have like 600 hrs in it iirc, and despite having done literally everything and gotten every achievement in it already, i'll probably still go back for another playthrough sooner or later. versus subnautica, where i really like the story, but most of the gameplay is just collecting things, and i already know most of the map layout pretty well, so trying to replay it ends up being a little boring to me.
i think rain world is a metroidvania-adjacent? it's not quite a metroidvania bc it doesn't have any real sort of gear or ability progression, but otherwise it's very similar to metroidvanias. tho i admit i didn't get very far in rain world, somethin about the controls i just couldn't get down n lost interest before i figured it out lol. i have played a handful of metroidvanias and had a good time with em, most notably hollow knight and blasphemous of course. funnily enough i havent actually gotten around to trying any castlevania or metroid games yet tho. one day....
again, it kinda just comes down to how the mechanics feel, but i do like a few roguelikes too, yea! that is kinda the genre for replayability haha. top 2 roguelikes imo are jupiter hell and noita. jupiter hell is a turn based rpg by the same creator as DRL, if youre familiar with that. and noita is. man i dont even know. i think it's kind of in a category of its own. every pixel in the world is simulated and the magic wand building system is so in depth, and none of that is even taking into account the sheer volume of content and things u can do in a single run. i kind of really suck at noita but the size and depth of it is extremely fascinating to me and i highly recommend it if u like roguelikes
we need to bring back old school tumblr communication and im so serious. sending an ask to a mutual just to say hello. seeing three different asks in your inbox all asking how your dentist appointment went. seeing a post you think one of your mutuals would enjoy and tagging them/sending it to them in the dms. nowadays its just silently liking a post or (if youre feeling extreme) replying under posts. WHAT HAPPENED TO US!! we used to be a proper community!!!! #LetsBringWhimsyBack
