There's this weird tendency among fandom types where they'll take a character, and insist that they are fans of them, before changing their design, age, pronouns, backstory, blood type, species, hometown, favorite color, zodiac sign, medical history, and every other facet of their being.

They will then violently insist that this version is superior to the canon one and act like they "fixed" them and it's like. Buddy that's not the same character anymore. That's just your own oc commiting identity fraud. Like. I get the desire to experiment with different interpretations of a story. But first of all it's okay to just make an original character if that's what you really want to do. And second of all, are you even really a fan of the character you "fixed" if they're a completely different person afterwards?

I reallyyyyyy think people are so dismissive of erotica and I get that a lot of it seems surface level, but I believe this is the problem. No one sees erotica as something worthy of exploring and theorizing about like every other genre. Our culture has a lot of sexual shame so it’s seen as degenerate (look at how people constantly make jokes at the expense of smut and treat it like something that should be kept under wraps).

Many people can’t experience their ideal sex life in person. Writing smut is a good outlet for that. It can be a profound healing experience. Especially for those of us with trauma. It can grant the autonomy you lacked in prior bad sexual situations. You can explore what you’re personally into in a safe environment without any pressure. It can be very helpful for self exploration.

Not to mention, you can explore themes in erotica just like any other genre.

Not everything sexual is deep, but it can be. And that’s the problem. Erotica is not valued so it’s never treated as such.

There's also this thing when people consider sexual things to be comforting and use them as a coping mechanism for stress or when they're upset or to motivate themselves etc or it's their way of communicating.

Like it's not even always related to anything explicitly sexual. It can be a metaphor or a medium for exploration of deep emotions or a form of art (as in nudity and even sexualized nudity but not (or not just) for the sake of making yourself feel good)

Also liking something just because of it being hot is "not a good enough of a reason" for some people. Which is strange to me... Like the story can be full of sexual scenes and it could be a good smutty story but also it can be full of sexual scenes and NOT be about the scenes themselves. I remember that one fanfic I read that was basically "let's write a list of kinks and try all of them" but the story turned out to be about building trust and relationships - the most interesting parts were not the sexual scenes but the interactions in-between where people who originally didn't care about each other all that much started caring about each other and noticing things about themselves and each other they didn't know we're there

So, how did it help me, you ask? Last month, I was just scrolling through fan art of Momo Ayase from DanDaDan on Pixiv. There was one spicy or "ecchi fan art of Momo with a "panty shot." It wasn't something explicit, it was just drawn from below while she was jumping. If someone with zero context sees that fan art, they'll think it's a fan art of an adult fictional character. Someone replied, as usual, "that's a minor," and then got into a fight with a Japanese user. That Japanese user suggested blacklisting some tags if they didn’t like it, but the other person escalated saying, "I am morally superior to your 'pedo' morality and you should kill yourself you pedo cunt."

I saw that comment, and it really annoyed me. I just said, "GTFO, this is Pixiv." He responded with, "Someone is mad." Well, then I forgot the first rule of the internet: don’t feed the trolls. I checked their account; they were a fan of characters from DDLC GAME, which is also set in a high school setting, but the character's age is "18." I replied, "Bro, why are you acting like you have high morality when you jerk off to Monika from DDLC?" Both characters are "similar" in character design, there's just a 1-2 year age gap.

Then he mocked me and made fun of me on his DeviantArt account. He didn’t show the fan art or character design, just made me look like the bad guy. After that, I was really hurt mentally. I started to think I was doing something immoral, bad, or wrong. It escalated to self-harm. I was just trying to cope for the last 30 days, and my real life got so much affected. I stopped talking to everyone in real life. I was in fight-or-flight mode for like 30 days, always on edge. I even felt nauseous just from seeing a manga chapter.

Last week, I visited his DeviantArt account again because I was checking if he was trying to stalk me or something. I saw him post something about "pedophile resources linking your Carrd website." I clicked out of curiosity and then checked the sources and links on how to cope with dogpiling, which brought me back from that dark valley. Thank you, I hope you are doing well. I doubt that idiot saved anyone’s life, but you did save someone's life.

Also, don’t try to be a xenophobe or something. I just want to add that this type of "moral puritanism" I’ve only seen from the online English-speaking community consisting of people from the UK, US, Australia, and Canada, who consider themselves "woke" and progressive. I’m probably more woke than them. They just say the entire country of Japan is pedophilic because of some loli drawings, causing actual harm by harassing and dogpiling.

As someone who is also in a similar position although not exclusively in regards to shipping but fandom and social media in general (not from an ENG speaking country +had antis tell me to kms etc) I relate to this very strongly.

My country fandom people don't gaf about lolisho and similar things, they know it's fiction. (well, most of them, there are always ppl who spend too much time on Twitter) So posts like this always make me feel more comfortable in knowing that it's not a me issue. So I'm reblogging it to maybe comfort someone else

You shouldn't have to have a shiny postcard stating you hate every bad thing in the world because "if you don't that means you support it!"

Please make problematic art

It's really sad to see people hide things that they once thought were worth showing to others.

Ever since COVID hit (at least this is how I experienced it) fandoms grew more unbearable to partake in.

People, who, more often than not, don't make art themselves and just engage with it (sometimes they don't even, no like nor comment from them) started making up reasons as to why certain kinds of thing to do on the internet are bad for you or for others etc.

But expressing scary or strange thoughs and opinions should not be punished. Thoughts like these should start conversations not smear campaigns. Humans have scary or strange thoughs. That's normal. And expressing them creatively shows others they are not alone in feeling a certain way and helping them feel connected and understood, helping them work through them.

And while I am all for proship and profic and anti censorship what I think is also really important to remember is being human and remembering that those on "the other side" are also human. Insecure, unhealthy, scared, hostile - but still human.

This is not just about being profiction or proship but, well, there's no label for people who think anti-harassment should be about things beyond fiction. Like— not all of the things I care about that are "controversial" are fictional.

It's important to be able to show sympathy towards those who did all the wrong things so they could learn how to do things the right way. This cannot happen if people are scared of being seen as monsters.

And so I want this post to encourage people to post about (the title says make art but it's not just that) things that they think others might find disturbing, strange, gross, mentally ill - whatever you've seen others say about similar things or projects. It might backfire but it also might do the thing that's supposed to happen - it might start a conversation.

Historically bad times always start with censorship (and self-censorship or censorship within the community) coming for human expression of the taboo and complex, morally grey thoughts, helping to set people against each other.

And it is important that fandoms have a place for people that have these thoughts because otherwise it's not going to end well.

Going from mostly indulging in fandom culture to reading books is kinda confusing and funny. Like yeah sure I am like reading this complex book giving me existential dread and things to ponder on but also this dude that dies in chapter one has such a cool dynamic with the MC I need yaoi fanart with them NOW.

Sometimes I wonder what happened in that world where COVID didn't happen but DSMP still blew up. Like damn that amazing art and fic that we wouldn't have because those artists wouldn't have the time to make it because of work and school... yet maybe the fandom wouldn't be so obsessed with stupid virtue signaling bullshit

The amount of stuff that was perfectly normal and fine in older fandoms that was considered HORRID in this one. Especially the non-rpf stuff that was about the characters. Like people on Twitter argued you cannot write sexual (or even romantic) fics about two characters who were literally canonically married and had an adopted child ok. Like yes in canon they constantly said "it's platonic, it's for tax benefits" but like dude that's what fanfiction is for!!!

And don't get me started on every single person from there getting cancelled at least once. There was a new reason to hate someone every week and people wrote lists of who you can and cannot watch because of what they've said or done 5 years ago. Yeah I know with the context we have now some of it was warranted to an extent but definitely not at the time -_-

that and cancel culture is literally unproductive and doesn't actually do anything helpful because shunning a person for any kind of action without later reintegration defeats the purpose. They won't learn anything via punishment just will get better at saying sorry and lying about themselves but hey who cares about that part ha ha

On making secret accounts

I've been thinking about this idea of making separate blogs for "problematic" and "non-problematic" stuff

I used to think this would be a good idea, that this way nobody would find my controversial stuff and I would be able to interact with mainblr or maintwt.

But as time went on... I've realized that it's like trying to please someone you don't even like. Why would I want to be among these people who would leave me the second they find out I like something like incest fics or age gaps?

They would never accept you. Only a version of you.

And even worse was the thought of people like me from before, lurking and trying to find someone who understands them. If I were to hide stuff about me that would essentially be saying "don't be yourself. what you think and love is unacceptable. you should be ashamed and pretend to be normal"

And I wouldn't want that.

Please don't hide for the sake of some others you don't even really want to be friends with.
