Species: Vehemoth Phosbat

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Vehemoth Phosbat is a monster. There has only been on of it’s kind observed but that is because we have been too terrified to seek out more of them. It is unlike anything we have ever seen. They have razor sharp teeth and gaping jaws. They have thick, fleshy, moth-like wings with leathery skin. They have glowing yellow eyes, and what appear to be bioluminescent “flowerings” interspersed throughout it’s black fur. These flowerings seem to be able to scatter bioluminescent spores that put most in a temporary daze. Most confusingly, it has the ability to turn invisible. We have no idea what the mechanism for this may be. Perhaps a complex system of camouflage, like the cuttlefish? We obviously have not been able to study the skin of the Phosbat under a microscope to observe any sort of chromatophores but this may very well be the case. 

Ecology/Habitat:

The single Vehemoth Phosbat we have observed was found in a cave in a Tundra. It clearly hates any sort of light and thrives in dark, cool environments. 

Diet:

Carnivorous. It will eat you. 

Behavior:

This thing is dangerous. Though it is clumsy and heavy, it has an arsenal of weapons at it’s disposal. Use extreme caution. It hates any sort of light. Use this to your advantage. 

Communication:

The sounds observed were chilling to the bone. Something like a banshee. Something like a wolf howl. Something like a bat’s screech amplified to a thousand. 

Human uses:

None. Avoid at all costs.

Species: Waddlepus

Family: unknown (Asteriidae/Octopodidae?)

Class: Asteroidea/Cephalopoda 

Phylum: Echinodermata/Mollusca

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Waddlepus. Is it a starfish? Is it an octopus? We have no idea, but it is quite cute! It has smooth bumps on it’s skin and comes in a variety of shades of purples, pinks, and blues. They have odd yellow pores on their backs that can actually suck in air or water it inflate their backs to appear bigger to enemies. They also have green eyes with strange, hourglass-shaped pupils. 

Ecology/Habitat:

The Waddlepus requires salt water to survive. Like the starfish and octopus, it can survive out of water for short periods of time, but must primarily live under water. It is quite clumsy on land anyways, hence its name. 

Diet:

The Waddlepus has a the soft mouth of a starfish. They are actually, like a starfish, capable of externally digesting their prey, pushing their digestive organs out through their mouths, partially digesting prey, then pulling everything back in. Charming. 

Behavior:

The Waddlepus is quite gentle. They spend most of their time at rest on the ocean floor, or in the shallows. When threatened, they puff themselves up to appear bigger, but this takes up a lot of energy. 

Communication:

No sounds are known.

Human uses:

No known human uses, but probably edible.

Species: Bearded Amprat

Family: unknown (assumed Caviidae/guinea pig)

Class: Mammalia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Bearded Amprat is probably the most Earthling-looking creature on PNF-404, however it is far from. It resembles a guinea pig, with four legs, a fur-covered body, and a hairless tail. They do not have apparent external ears, and the front of their face is covered in long hair so you cannot see what their noses look like. Most unusually, like an electric eel, it is capable of sending out electric currents to stun threats or prey. 

Ecology/Habitat:

The Bearded Amprat prefers drier climates, such as scrubs, deserts, and tundras. They can survive a variety of temperatures, though cannot stand getting wet, as it may inhibit their ability to generate electricity. 

Diet:

The Bearded Amprat is omnivorous, preferring seeds, vegetables, and on occasions, meat. It is not afraid to use it’s electricity as a weapon to stun prey.

Behavior:

Bearded Amprats are gutsy creatures that are capable of generating static electricity by rubbing it’s “beard” rapidly. It can then use this electricity to stun threats or potential prey. It generally placidly patrols it’s territory. They are solitary creatures.

Communication:

Typical guinea pig sounds. Squeaks, grunts, and squeals. 

Human uses:

They would probably make excellent lab-rats if only we could somehow disable their electricity...

Species: Honeywisp

Family: unknown

Class: unknown

Phylum: unknown

Anatomy and Physiology:

It is unclear if the Honeywisp is an actual organism, or a common mirage or a myth. They have been observed, but are still quite elusive. They have transparent bodies with a magenta core. They have eyes, small mouths, and appear to have sensory organs that resemble antennae on their bodies. They have fin-like arms, and their bodies are tear-drop shaped, often carrying a drop of honey or nectar at the end of their tails. 

Ecology/Habitat:

Honeywisps are extremely rare, and are usually found among flowers, or other scenic areas such are lakes or ponds. 

Diet:

Honeywisps have not been observed eating. It is not known if the nectar that they carry is a food source for themselves. 

Behavior:

Honeywisps are seen to drift peacefully about, before mysteriously disappearing into thin air. If you blink, they’re gone. If you get to close, or make any sudden movements or sounds, they also vanish without a trace, though sometimes it is said that they drop their glob of nectar onto the ground. However it is unclear if drops of nectar on the ground are from Honeywisps, or other plant-life. 

Communication:

The Honeywisps have been said to “sing” in a whistle-ing sort of way, much like a chime, a bell, or a grass whistle. This is all up to interpretation though, as many people have said many different things.

Species: Greater Spotted Jellyfloat

Family: Jellyfloat

Class: Schyphozoa

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Greater Spotted Jellyfloat is an organism similar to the jellyfish, except for the fact that it does not live in water, but rather, floats in the air, like it’s cousin, the Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat. They are larger, and pink, with bioluminescent spots. They have antennae that function as simple sensory organs, as well as stingers, and vacuum-like capabilities that enable it to suck up prey into it’s body cavity for digestion. Their sensory organs are actually filled with bioluminescence, and have been observed luring prey. 

Ecology/Habitat:

The Greater Spotted Jellyfloat, although they do not live in water, prefer damp environments, as they require moisture to keep their mucous membranes well lubricated. Misty environments are optimal.

Diet:

The Greater Spotted Jellyfloat are carnivorous, slow, but quicker than it’s Lesser cousins. They generally sneak up to unsuspecting prey, vacuum them up, and then slowly digest.

Behavior:

The Greater Spotted Jellyfloat are placid and quiet, much like jellyfish, spending much of their time drifting about and eating. They do actively hunt, however. Their bioluminescence sensory organs have also been observed being used as lures, much like the angler fish.

Communication:

The Greater Spotted Jellyfloat live in groups among the Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat as well. They are able to hunt independently or in groups. They are not known to make any sounds audible to human ears.

Human uses:

Species: Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat

Family: Jellyfloat

Class: Schyphozoa

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat is an organism similar to the jellyfish, except for the fact that it does not live in water, but rather, floats in the air. The Lesser Spotted Jelly Float is smaller than it’s larger cousins, and tinted a light blue, with bioluminescent spots. They seem to have antennae-like protrusions which may be used as simple eye-like organs, sensing light, as well as stingers. They are capable of sucking up prey like a vacuum into it’s body cavity, and digesting it from there.  

Ecology/Habitat:

The Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat, although they do not live in water, prefer damp environments, as they require moisture to keep their mucous membranes well lubricated. Misty environments are optimal.

Species: Dwarf Red Bulborb

Family: Breadbug

Class: Mammalia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Dwarf Red Bulborb is not actually a Bulborb. Though it resembles Red Grub-Dog young, it is an entirely different species, and is a member of the Breadbug family. They are small, with red and tan flesh, sporting red spots and bulging eyes. They have stubby feet and sharp teeth. 

Ecology/Habitat:

The Dwarf Red Bulborbs are as common as as Red Bulborbs are, meaning they exist in most habitats, but prefer temperate climates. They cluster around Red Bulborbs, posing as their young. 

Diet:

Dwarf Red Bulborbs are carnivorous, able to catch and eat small prey, and occasionally scavenging off of scraps left by Red Bulborbs. 

Behavior:

Dwarf Red Bulborbs have a commensalistic relationship with Red Bulborbs. They receive protection and occasionally food from Red Bulborbs without negatively affecting them. They can be aggressive, but tend to be more timid around larger creatures than itself. They seem to be more intelligent and agile than their larger counterparts. They also need to sleep less, spending more time foraging during sunset and sunrise. 

Communication:

Dwarf Red Bulborbs live in small groups with Red Bulborbs. They communicate with squeaks and growls. They can cooperatively hunt, but don’t seem to tend to often, preferring to hunt smaller prey independently or relying on Red Bulborb scraps. They communicate using distress calls, and of course, aggressive sounds directed at one another when fighting over food. 

Human uses:

Species: Giant Breadbug

Family: Breadbug

Class: Mammalia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Giant Breadbug is a mammal that is, to be quite frank, fat. It has an incredible layer of blubber. In fact, it is quite impressive that this creature can move at all underneath it’s own weight. It can be assumed that this creature must also be quite strong. It resembles a loaf of sandwich bread, with a dark brown body and a cream colored face. 

Ecology/Habitat:

Giant Breadbugs are rare, and only found in caves living among regular Breadbugs. 

Diet:

Giant Breadbugs are omnivores and scavengers, having similar eating habits to their Breadbug cousins. They are larger and stronger, so are more capable of dragging away larger food. 

Behavior:

Giant Breadbugs are rarer, and do not seem to interact with their own species, instead choosing to live among colonies of regular Breadbugs. 

Communication:

Giant Breadbugs communicate in similar ways that regular Breadbugs do, and regular Breadbugs readily accept them into their families. Perhaps for protections or greater food sources? It can be assumed to be a symbiotic relationship. 

Human uses:

Species: Breadbug

Family: Breadbug

Class: Mammalia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

Despite it’s name, the Breadbug is a type of mammal. It has thick, blubbery skin, much like a seal, and dull teeth. It lives up to it’s name, resembling a loaf of bread with a toasty molasses back and a soft, white underbelly. They have short, stubby legs and no arms, much like many species of the Grub-Dog family. 

Ecology/Habitat:

Though Breadbugs, like Red Grub-Dogs, can live in most temperate areas, they can also frequently be found in caves. They have underground nests where they store much of their food. 

Diet:

Breadbugs are omnivores, and scavengers and thieves. They usually obtain their food by dragging it away from unsuspecting sleeping predators. At times they have even been observed to engage in cannibalism, but only when their prey/rival dies on it’s own. They do not hunt, as they have no weapons such as sharp teeth or claws, and are quite clumsy. 

Behavior:

Breadbugs are social, but competitive creatures. Competing families or nests will tug-of-war for food until death at times. When food isn’t involved, they are extremely placid and peaceful, spending much of their time sleeping, roaming, and socializing. 

Communication:

Breadbugs live in nests, socializing in tight-nit families. They communicate with squeaks, squeals, and coos, calling to one another and communicating when they have found food, a threat, or want to socialize. 

Human uses:

"Breadbugs are hearty and nutritious but also bland and unimaginative. They may be palatable in a pinch, but they hold no true culinary promise." (-Louie, Pikmin 2)

Species: Pileated Snagret

Family: Snavian

Class: Aves

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Pileated Snagret is something like a bird, something like a snake. They have long, scaled bodies ending in a singular, clawed foot, They have feathery heads, visible ears, and long beaks. Unlike the Burrowing Snagret, the Pileated Snagret frequently unearths itself completely to feed. However, with only one foot, it cannot get around very well above ground, so opts out of traveling in this manner. 

Ecology/Habitat:

The Pileated Snagret, though not having many differences from the Burrowing Snagret, have only been observed in caves. They are much rarer than the Burrowing Snagret, perhaps due to competition for resources. 

Diet:

The Pileated Snagret surfaces from underground to feed on surface-dwelling insects, but because of it’s above-ground adaption, may also feed on small mammals and reptiles from time to time.

Behavior:

The Pileated Snagret’s behavior underground has not been observed, and above ground it has only been observed feeding. It appears to be quite aggressive.

Communication:

The social behavior of the Pileated Snagret is not well known, but it is assumed to be a solitary species. It has been observed making rooster-like calls.

Human uses:

Species: Burrowing Snagret

Family: Snavian

Class: Aves

Anatomy and Physiology:

Snavians are quite an unusual set of species. The Burrowing Snagret is one of two species of Snavians that are known. They have a scaly body, with a feathery head, and a long, sharp beak. It is assumed that their snake-like body ends in a singular, clawed foot, like their Pileated Snagret cousins. 

Ecology/Habitat:

The Burrowing Snagret spends most of it’s time underground. They can survive in a variety of habitats due to it’s ability to burrow and live in most types of soil. 

Diet:

The Burrowing Snagret surfaces from underground to feed on surface-dwelling insects. 

Behavior:

The Burrowing Snagret’s behavior underground has not been observed, and above ground it has only been observed feeding. It appears to be quite aggressive. 

Communication:

The social behavior of the Burrowing Snagret is not well known, but it is assumed to be a solitary species. It has been observed making crow-like sounds, such as cawing and screeching. 

Human uses:

Species: Yellow Wollywog

Family: Amphituber

Class: Amphibia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

Yellow Wollywogs are amphibians with a bright yellow and green skin and green spots. They have orange or red feet, with a sticky coating on the pads. Their skin is slimy with a protective coating that keeps their skin from drying out. While their front legs are small and flimsy, their back legs are powerful and capable of launching them upwards into the sky. They are even able to inflate throat sacks full of air to lighten their bodies, letting them hover for a few seconds before deflating them rapidly to land back down. 

Ecology/Habitat:

Yellow Wollywogs, as opposed to their cousins, prefer a more open-air environment, such as lakes and ponds out in the open. They like temperate to tropical environments. The warmer and wetter, the better. 

Diet:

Yellow Wollywogs prefer insects, but won’t reject any other smaller prey it can get it’s tongue on, such as smaller amphibians, birds, or mammals. They have faster metabolisms than their cave-dwelling cousins, so they need to spend much more time eating. They spend their days in the shallows, waiting for prey to pass by. They then rapidly project their sticky tongue outwards to snatch up food. 

Behavior:

Yellow Wollywogs are placid, spending their days relaxing and eating, unless they are guarding their eggs. They are fiercely protective of their young. They actually use their powerful legs and throat/air-sacks to leap up, and come back down with a slam. This is usually a scare attempt to frighten away predators, but occasionally actually can crush smaller threats. 

Communication:

Yellow Wollywogs are more social, living in sparse groups. They communicate with various chirps and croaks, and work together to protect their young.

Species: Wollywog

Family: Amphituber

Class: Amphibia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

Wollywogs are amphibians with a pale, albino-like appearance. They have a protective slimy coating on their skin, and underdeveloped eyes due to the fact that they live in dark places where sight isn’t a very necessary sense to have. Their legs look small, but are surprisingly powerful, as they can leap enormous heights. 

Ecology/Habitat:

Wollywogs thrive in subterranean areas. Damp caves are their favorite areas. Lack of sunlight is why they are incredibly pale in appearance, and have undeveloped eyesight. They simply didn’t need it. 

Diet:

Wollywogs thrive on any little insect or grub they can get in the dark caverns they reside in. They surprisingly don’t need much to eat - they spend much of their lives at rest, and have slow metabolic rates. This is probably natural selection at work, due to the fact that there simply isn’t much prey inside the dank and musty caves that they live in. 

Behavior:

Wollywogs spend much of their time sleeping, and what little time they spend awake, they spend eating. Their prey, usually insects with lots of crunchy bits that can take a long time to digest, effectively puts Wollywogs in a food coma after each feeding. However, once a year, during breeding season, Wollywogs will get together and sing to find a mate. 

Communication:

Wollywogs are fairly quiet, that is, until mating season comes around. Each Wollywog has a unique song composed of chirping, croaking sounds. These sounds are used to select a favorite mate. 

Human uses:

"Wollywogs are best ground up, shaped into a patty, and flame-broiled on a grill. Slap on tomato slices, lettuce, onions, ketchup, and slide the patty between a sesame-seed bun for the ultimate beast-burger experience." (-Louie, Pikmin 2)

Species: Water Dumple

Family: Grub-Dog

Class: Mammalia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

Water Dumples are related to the Red Bulborbs, but are quite unusual for their family. They are an aquatic species, a marine mammal, and are completely blind. They have no eyes and rely completely on their sense of smell and touch. They share a nearly identical skeletal structure with their terrestrial cousins. This may offer clues to its evolutionary origin and suggests that it only recently emigrated to an aquatic habitat. However, they are quite clumsy both in the water and on land, unable to really properly swim or walk. Rather, they scoot, or move much like a snail or a slug would. 

Ecology/Habitat:

Water Dumples can be found anywhere there is water. They can survive in both salt and fresh water areas, but tend to prefer ponds and marshes. They breathe air, so do typically stay in the shallows where they can easily access oxygen. 

Diet:

Water Dumples, like other Grub-Dogs, are carnivores. However, since they are restricted by their habitat, they generally stick to insects and small amphibians, though they will take bigger prey if they can get it. 

Behavior:

Water Dumples blindly follow their appetites. They tend to gnash wildly at anything that moves around them. Use caution when approaching. They are extremely unpredictable. 

Communication:

Water Dumples grunt, bellow, and gurgle. They live in scattered groups, much like seals do, tolerating one another, grumbling and grouching at one another if they get too close. 

Human uses:

Species: Spotty Bulbear

Family: Grub-Dog

Class: Mammalia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

The Spotty Bulbear are related to the Red Bulborbs. They have black, leather skin, a tan underbelly, and vibrant red spots. They have sharp incisors. They are built a bit differently than the Bulborb species, having larger nostrils, but a shorter snout. They also have thick, blubbery lips, shorter, stumpier feet, and smaller eyes. These smaller eyes are due to the fact that these creatures are actually diurnal, unlike the Bulborbs in the Grub-Dog family. 

Ecology/Habitat:

The Spotty Bulbear prefer temperate climates, but can also be found resting in caves during colder seasons. Unlike the rest of the species in the Grub-Dog family, which tend to stake out a small territory and stay in one area, the Spotty Bulbear tend to roam and patrol a larger area, often seeking out new sources of food. 

Diet:

The Spotty Bulbear is a particularly voracious eater, capable of taking down large prey with ease. They have large mouths with sharp teeth. Their feet are smaller than their cousins, and their bodies slightly more compact shaped, making them a bit more agile. They can chase down prey and take it down, preferring to gorge on larger animals as opposed to feeding on smaller ones more often. They are quite active, constantly seeking out food during the day, rather than snoozing and waiting for an opportunity to pass by. 

Behavior:

The Spotty Bulbear, while not particularly aggressive, is quite formidable. Everything is prey to them, and they will stop at nothing to hunt it down. They have an interesting social hierarchy, forming small packs with their young led by one parent. 

Communication:

The Spotty Bulbear are capable of a variety of sounds, including growling, snarling, and roaring. They are not incredibly social animals, so most of the sounds used are distress calls, hunting calls, calls for their young/parents, and sounds of aggression. 

Human uses:

"For an unrivaled green curry, peel away the spotty bulbear's skin, pulverize the juicy innards, and stew until curiously fragrant." (-Louie, Pikmin 2)

Species: Whiptongue Bulborb

Family: Grub-Dog

Class: Mammalia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

Whiptongue Bulborbs are related to the Red Bulborbs. They have white skin, a tan underbelly and muzzle, and black spots. Most unusual about this particular species is their complete lack of large jaws. Rather, they have a longer snout, much like an anteater, that extends outwards, with a sticky, chameleon-like tongue that they use for slurping up prey. This species is quite unique, and their physiology has entirely changed their diet and behavior as well. 

Ecology/Habitat:

Whiptongue Bulborbs generally provide warmer, wetter environments than other Grub-Gogs due to their prey preference, but like their cousins, can be found most anywhere. They need a place where they can find ground-roaming insects, so a tropical climate is usually best, but ants are plentiful in most places. 

Diet:

Whiptongue Bulborbs are the only Grub-Dogs that do not eat larger prey. They tend to stick to insects, or the occasional small bird, reptile, rodent, or amphibian. But mostly insects. They have a very small mouth and limited teeth. Their tongue is very sticky and whip-like, hence their name, and can shoot out and sweep from side to side, collecting up colonies of insects at a time. They also, from time to time, will collect nectar from plants.

Behavior:

Whiptongue Bulborbs are by far the least aggressive of the bunch. In fact, they are quite passive, gentle creatures, at least in comparison (unless you are small enough to eat). 

Communication:

Whiptongue Bulborbs are actually silent for the most part, or perhaps, make sounds that we cannot pick up with the naked ear or any devices on hand.

Species: Hairy Bulborb

Family: Grub-Dog

Class: Mammalia

Phylum: Chordata

Anatomy and Physiology:

Hairy Bulborbs are related to the Red Bulborbs. They have white skin, a layer of blubber, brown tipped noses, and pale blue spots. The most unusual feature of the Hairy Bulborb is the fine, down-like cover of hair on its back. The fur is quite sparse, so it is unlikely that it provides much warmth. Quite shockingly, if the creature is surprised, it will blow its coat completely off, much like a lizard will lose it’s tail if caught! It is suspected that this is a self defense mechanism - perhaps the hair is a decoy, much like cephalopods use ink as a decoy when escaping. 

Ecology/Habitat:

Hairy Bulborbs, while still common, appear less frequently than Red and Orange Bulborbs, preferring colder climates. Their blubber, and perhaps their thin layer of down, keeps them well suited to snowy environments. 

Diet:

Like all Grub-dogs, Hair Bulborbs are carnivorous, feating on as much as it can to build up it’s winter stores. 

Behavior:

The Hairy Bulborbs, though primarily nocturnal, have been observed awake during the day more often than it’s Red Bulborb cousins. They seem to be less temperamental and aggressive, but do spend more time hunting, perhaps because it takes more calories to survive in such cold environments. 

Communication:

The Hairy Bulborbs and the Red Bulborbs have identical communication methods.  

Human uses:

“Remove all of the bulborb’s hair, wrap the beast in foil along with a halved lemon, and place directly on the grill. The foil should protect the carcass from scorching, and the lemon will give the meat an elegant hint of citrus..” (-Louie, Pikmin 2, Nintendo)
