I was browsing the Piklopedia and found an interesting tidbit on one enemy, the rodent-like Bearded Amprat:
"It has several qualities unique to its ecosystem, such as breastfeeding its young, which may someday give rise to a whole new taxonomy of fauna here." --direct Piklopedia quote
And I just realized: most of the creatures of PNF-404 are either insects, fish, amphibians, various other invertebrates, plant-animal hybrids and bizarre geological beings--but the Bearded Amprat is the *only mammal*, barring Oatchi and the captains since they are aliens.
So either PNF 404 is some weird alternate Triassic Period and the Amprat is some kind of cynodont, or it's in a future where *all mammals* except the Amprat are extinct.
Which would be a neat possible shout out to the Poggle from The Future Is Wild!
That could be a cute reference! But I don’t think it takes place in an alternate Triassic, since it’s in the abandoned ruins of human civilization. Also the vast majority of pikmin enemies are insect sized, so the average rodent would probably be boss sized. The amprat is an outlier in rodent size since it’s mouse size.
We’ve also never seen any megafaunal species in pikmin before (except maybe the very largest enemies), so they could still be dominated by more recognizable families such as mammals.
There’s a lot of weird stuff and mystery going on with pikmin earth, and we’re just never told what’s going on.
