But if you want to know some real and interesting facts about the Statue of Liberty- France told the US that they were sending the statute and both countries agreed that the US should build the base for her to stand on. Well the statute arrived on the agreed upon date, but was the base done? No. Soooo the US sent part of her back to France, part of her sat in the harbor, part of her went on display to help raise money to finish the base, and still more of her just sat around in empty fields just waiting to be assembled. And then when the US finally did put her together she was assembled wrong! The error in welding and neglect of general upkeep wore away the torch barring arm and the torch itself. In the mid to late 1980’s the statue was closed while major repairs were performed due to the earlier mistakes.
