Today I’m planning on showing you my handwriting as well as how it has evolved since I started learning Korean. I also wrote out how to write some letters that look a bit different when handwritten than when typed because that was what used to confuse me at first.

This is how my handwriting used to look in 2014. These are Lee Hi’s lyrics but… well, look at how I didn’t separate words properly and it’s just very all over the place. I was trying to learn Korean for a few months back then. (I am too ashamed to show you what it looked like at the complete beginning… Imagine something written with your non-dominant hand and your eyes closed lol)

This is one year later to show you that I haven’t made much progress, only changes pens (which affects my handwriting a lot) but it’s still very messy and chaotic. These are lyrics of 악동뮤지션 btw~

Here under, you can see what my messy handwriting looked last year. This is some vocab list with example sentences so I didn’t really try to make it pretty. Still looks much better than 5 years ago.

Hello! I just recently started getting interested in Thai, I absolutely love the script and I think it sounds so amazing! But I've been struggling with finding good resources.. do you have any suggestions??

Oh, sweet!

Yeah, I do have some suggestions for you and for others who are starting out in Thai.

1. I cheer for learning the script from the beginning, even though it's pretty hard. If you know the script, you can figure out how exactly the word sounds and even the right tone for it.

I personally started out with free apps teaching you the script and when I somewhat grasped the basics, I moved on to learning vocabulary, picking up the rest of the writing system on the go. The thing is, there are lots of consonants producing the same sound and some of them pretty rare and you can learn them later, when you encounter them.

I'd say you mostly need this part of the alphabet to start out, at least I did and then gradually mastered the rest.

2. When you're comfortable with writing, there's this set of rules that helps you to figure out the tone of the syllable. It looks intimidating, but learning that is really rewarding. For example, it's explained well in Poomsan Becker's Thai for Beginners.

3. General recommendations. There are some good books:

All of them come with nice native audio.

Then there's Thaipod101 on YouTube and their own site, they have some free podcast lessons.

I really like some courses on memrise for vocabulary with audio, up to this moment I've been learning my vocabulary through memrise. There are some courses closely following Thai for beginners, so it works perfectly for me.

And also I try to watch a lot of native content with subs on YouTube and pick some things up that way.

worked on the thai alphabet tonight !! im using some printouts from brooklynbrainery / clickthai.de and i really like them so far, even if they are in german lol. im also following along with a youtube tutorial that has audio so i learn how to say each letter as i write them. im feeling v. good about thai as im starting again since completely losing motivation !!

I had found myself finding less and less time for learning Korean and Thai. It’s like I have to do this and that and then days turn into weeks and then months and I’m still at the same place.

Even though I want to learn I feel as though time just passes me by and I don’t want that to happen anymore.

I want to make a goal. How many hours a week I spend studying. Let me start by saying 3 hours a week of studying as a goal.

They are apps l want to incorporate into my daily life. Atleast maybe 5 mins a day of learning.

I have also subscribed to new channels on YouTube that teach Korean. I find it more fun learning from watching videos and even learning from watching Thai or kdramas without subs and sometimes posts on here.

I got the Ewha Korean books. I heard good things about those so I want to try learning from that. Wish me luck!

I saw a comment on the video that said the first Thai word they learnt was raikantopeni and I burst out laughing 😂 since they show this at the start of basically every bl drama.

I learnt about the pronunciation of vowel sounds and the apostrophe is used to indicate that the vowel is short.

I also learnt about the 5 Tones which are as important to learn as consonants and vowels in Thai.

The tones are:

Mid tone

Low tone

Falling tone

High tone

Rising tone

It’s good that I now have the basic knowledge of the tones and I know that a word said in high tone could mean something completely different when using a falling tone and hearing the audio clips that come along with the book (read Thai in ten days) I’m speechless because it’s going to take a lot to reprogram my brain to be able to differentiate the different tones.

Months in Thai

one interesting fact about thai way of counting days in months is that the “คม” ending is for months that have 31 days, the “ยน” ending for months that have 30 days, while “กุมภาพันธ์” is an exception for february which has 28/29 days. also, months in thai are coined words that represent each zodiac sign start from january as capricorn (มกร+อาคม) to december as sagittarius (ธนู+อาคม)

january มกราคม (ma-ka-ra-khom / mok-ka-ra-khom)= 31 days

february กุมภาพันธ์ (kum-pha-pan) = 28/29 days

march มีนาคม (mi-na-khom) = 31 days

april เมษายน (me-sa-yon) = 30 days

may พฤษภาคม (phruet-sa-pha-khom) = 31 days

june มิถุนายน (mi-thu-na-yon) = 30 days

july กรกฎาคม (ka-ra-ka-da-khom / ka-rak-ka-da-khom) = 31 days

august สิงหาคม (sing-ha-khom) = 31 days

september กันยายน (kan-ya-yon) = 30 days

One thing I did wrong when I started learning Thai is that I assumed it would be like Korean. That there would be an alphabet with the consonants and vowels and that’s the basics.

When I first started learning Thai I used thaipod101 and a website that had the 44 consonants.

But as I watched thaipod101, the vowels were at the front, back, on top it made no sense and each site gave me a different meaning for each consonants or syllable.

I have started reading read Thai in 10 days by Arthur juyaso and my goodness the way the book is explaining things. It actually makes sense.

What I know so far Thai has

44 consonants (2 obsolete) but there are only 20 consonant sounds)

21 vowel symbols.

4 tone marks

A syllable has 2 - 4 constituents. Initial consonant, a vowel, final consonant and or tone mark.

However, vowels can be located in front, after, above, underneath or enclosing the initial consonant.

Also, the location of most vowels are fixed. This can be used as an indicator to when a syllable is finished.

Note, even though a vowel might be in front of the initial consonant when it is pronounced, it is not said first.

Also, like how the Greek use a for alpha, b for beta like a consonant acrophonics in Thai they do the same thing so g = chicken. And I’m not going to lie the Thai g looks like a chicken lol

This is just the basics but I feel like I have more of an understanding of how the Thai language works. I’m excited to learn more. Ignore my handwriting ☺️ I don’t have fancy handwriting like others.

Awesome! Thank you for sharing! I’m planning in learning a bit of Thai in the near future so hearing from other people learning it what ressources work and don’t is great! May I ask if the textbook you’re using also covers a bit of speaking, or is it solely focussed on writing abilities ?

My first Thai learning book has arrived. I tried learning Thai with thaipod101 on YouTube and that gave me a headache, didn’t understand anything and it was very confusing. So, I bought this book Read Thai in ten days by Arthur Juyaso.

We will see how it goes, I’m so excited. 😆
