Chandra would be even stupider if Val could choose, because Chandra can't be maxed out like the others bc she's so isolated, her stats have way lower AP requirements for herself, Val only needs blue hearts. if Val was the one who chooses the final route, then Chandra should be immediately easy bc Val already WANTS to know her. Val's logic CAN'T be in love yet. it has to be friendship. And Val already sees Chandra as a friend, she already wants to know her. Val would 100% say "I wish I could see Chandra again!" "I want to bring her cookies tomorrow!" or whatever. the hardest LI immediately becomes the easiest bc Vals heart is just way too big and loving

Reason the route split is coded like that is cuz back in the day I remember playing an otome called frozen essense and at the end of the common route the routes split from what I remember was cuz the main character was in danger after she leaves her realm? and a choice menu appears that let's the player pick who they want her to ask to save her. And then she passes out and that person is the one who ends up with her on the story

I originally wanted Val to do that. To call out to who she wants to save her. But the branches are all wildly different first off. But the biggest thing is the routes have more requirements than just affection alone. If could Val chooses who she wants, then it makes less sense for the player. You can want Zach all you want but if you didn't trigger the flag for asking him to get a job then you can't ask for him. And it doesn't make any fucking sense if Val has max affection with him and still can't call for him 😭 Val WOULD call them.

So instead Diana has to choose, this way the requirements become her observations instead of barriers. Diana doesn't think Val and Alex are a match because Val doesn't even like Liam. Diana doesn't think Sophie could be the one for Val because Val is just as close to Ethan. Diana doesn't have Chandra or Opal as options at all because Diana barely knows Chandra and Opal is a villain.

Diana picks Val's special someone based on the stats instead of Val looking you dead in the eye and saying she won't ask Alex to save her because she forgot to make him co-leader in episode 8 like bitch appoint him then!!! you can do it right now then damn!!! 😭

i think there'd be alot less discourse around "fanfic vs literature" if more people treated fanfiction as it's own medium with it's own strength and weaknesses, rather than comparing it to traditional literature, because most of what i love about fan-fiction just straight up does not work in original fiction. at all.

and when i said "original fiction" i don't mean "canon fiction" or "published fiction" i mean "fiction that isn't already part of a long running series" because most fanfiction only works because it's an unofficial continuation of an already existing work, and that's not a bad thing to me, because there's stuff you can do in fanfiction that you couldn't do with new characters, it's why alot of modern tiktok romance sucks, because it assumes people like tropes for the sake of having tropes, and not specifically they like seeing characters they ALREADY LIKE doing them.
