An Intro To Contemporary Queer Brazilian Slang

Lacre: substantive. similar to the english language slang "you ate them up". literal meaning of "lacre" is a security sealer so it implies you've sealed the discussion. usually has political implications, albeit not always. it has been used in the pejorative manner similar to the phrase "that friend that's too woke" if someone wanted to convey that feeling they would say some is "lacrando demais" (demais = too much) or ironically being used like "nossa, lacrou" (wow, you ate). can also be used to compliment someone outside of an argument setting. for example "que lacre esse look" to compliment someone's outfit and suppose your friend got their dream job and is excited telling you about it: "PARABÉNS AMIGA LACROU!!" would be an appropriate response.

Fecho: substantive. literal meaning is a thing used to close something. on the same spectrum as "lacre" but not quite the same. for example, whereas "lacre" usually means you're telling a person they made a great point that sealed the discussion "fecho" can mean something similar to the english language slang "period" in the same Winning A Discussion context, but not always. you can use the phrase "ela me deu um fecho" (ela me deu = she gave me) which would mean something like "putting someone in their place" but not always pejoratively. for example, someone might be concerned about your health habits and apply some tough loving in telling you you should take better care of yourself. then you would use "minha psicóloga me deu um fecho sobre meus hábitos de sono" (psicóloga = psychologist. me deu = gave me. sobre meus hábitos de sono = about my sleeping habits) Juro: substantive. literal meaning is "to swear" (not in the cussing way). something you would say in response to someone saying something funny and/or absurd. for example if your friend said: "birds give nonbinary vibes" and you can't quite think of a response, a bit too stunned to speak? just say: "juro". Old: now, i am aware this is actually a word from the english language. however, it is used differently here. when someone says something you deeply agree "old" is a common response from queer people. not to be confused with english expression "this is old news", because, unlike "old news" the meaning of the expression is to show support in your agreeance. and also, it can be used for something that's not actually old news. for example "cat hair in black clothing is the new trend in milan runways". "old" would be an appropriate response. i actually searched up my user + old in my twitter account and found my friend responding "old" to that exact statement i made lmao Diva: adjective. i am aware this is also a word in the english language. however, in opposition to the meaning of a high-maintenance woman that's associated with that word it's a positive statement. for example, you see an old lady with pink hair on the street. an appropriate response would be to tell your friend "ela é tão diva". literal meaning being "she's such a diva" but the latter reads as you calling her hard to get along with. see? Babado: substantive. literal meaning is drool. yeah, i don't know how it relates either. but it can be something you say if you wanna know a specific lore or the latest gossip (for hot goss you can add the word "forte" which means "strong" and say "babado forte"). for example "me conta esse babado" would mean "tell me that lore". or when someone says something shocking like "that person we hate adopted a cat and even the cat hates him" you would say "babaaaado". it all depends on the tone, really. the same way you can use "babado forte" for a strong babado, "babado fortíssimo" is used to indicate a very strong "babado".
