wait what, what did kimberly brooks say? i've only seen a few things but none of it jumped out to me as particularly drama-worthy.

I’m actually surprised I haven’t seen anyone talking about this interview which means people are purposefully ignoring it and I personally find that funny. Basically, the interview was really good and we got some good insight on Allura from the va herself (and the promise of some really exciting things which I am hoping means Alteans or Altean descendants). Towards the end of her part of the interview (around 00:49:20) this happened:
Interviewer: How do you feel when the Voltron fandom calls Allura “Space Mom?”
Kimberly: I feel very warm about that because mom is affection, it’s loving, it’s protector, it’s teacher and guide. And she’s sort of teaching them, she’s nurturing, and yet she’s strong and she knows she has to do what she has to do to protect her family and to protect the universe. Let’s just say the universe is her family and now it sort of is. It’s a term of endearment, I think. And Shiro’s Space Dad, what are you gonna do about that? I mean they have those roles for a reason. Someone’s gotta be mom and dad. Someone’s gotta be in charge. Why not Allura? I love it. I think it’s awesome.
So keeping a long story short, Kimberly likes the space mom trope this fandom hates so much and provides a reason as to why she enjoys it and also implied that Shiro and Allura are space parents.
HOWEVER, same interview some questions came up regarding Allura’s youth and Kimberly answered them truthfully but the over excessive use of “young” and “youth” seemed funny to me because those words are so vague and, like it or not, applies to 20+ adults because contrary to what that One Portion of the fandom believes, being in your 20s doesn’t mean you’ve got your life together, that you’ve grown up, or that you’re even mentally mature enough to truly be called an adult. Along with that, Kimberly made a comment that Allura was “kind of like a teen” which doesn’t make sense and made me laugh out loud over how vague it is, especially when she and Bex made a comment at Wondercon 2016 about how Allura seemed 20. (around 1:30)
So basically, Allura is “kind of like a teen” and “young” but she’s still a space mom and has that role for a reason along w/ Shiro–I find this too vague to be a coincidence and imo this only proved my theory that Dreamworks/the voltron writers are purposefully being vague and secretive about Allura’s age because they’re testing the waters and trying to find out which ship they think works best. So I’m not saying “Allura is 100% a teen” or “Allura is 100% an adult” I’m just saying they’re retconning Allura’s age for a reason and there’s just no denying the context behind her scenes with Shiro seasons 1 and 2 from a writing standpoint, and yet she was de-aged (do not fight me on this with “well she just never had a chance to express her age” that is a weak argument and gives too much credit to the writers imo) in season 3 aka the only season without Shiro for a majority of the time.
Honestly, if they just made her 20 and went with the guidebook ages for the paladins, with Shiro being 25 and Keith being 18, she’s in that in between age where both ships work and no one can really say anything against them. And regardless of her being referred to a teen in official documents they’re both sketchy. The guidebook isn’t canon, and the only other place where she’s called a teen in writing is that one book retelling the events of episode 1, which coincidentally also called Shiro a teen. And JDS saying “like a teen” is about as valid of a phrase as “kind of like a teen” because it’s just too vague bc unlike with the other paladins they could pull a “we only said she was LIKE one not that she WAS one” which is something they could honestly do and get away with.
tl;dr Kimberly likes it when Allura’s called a space mom and implied she and Shiro are mom and dad yet also referred to Allura’s youth in vague and confusing contexts so Dreamworks just wont pick an age because they want a ship. That’s my theory, anyway.
