“ can i help you? ” ( @redapt )
“ fuck ! you scared the shit outta --- ” she doesn’t like being caught off guard ( lately, ever since this guy showed up, her mother is perpetually on edge, and it’s taking a toll on Felicitas as well ). and despite her response being quick and concise ( switchblade drawn from her pocket and pressed against his jugular ), he’s even quicker to block it, doesn’t even flinch as he does, either – her mother is right, this guy is dangerous. So she sucks in a breath and an even cruder remark, flicks the blade closed and offers the other a vicious glare.
no te hagas la viva con éste – acá hay gato encerrado. Celita is the voice of reason to her daughter’s reckless brawn, and that’s the reason why Felicitas knows her mother is always right with her gut feelings. Without noticing, her own hand encloses around the cross hanging from her rosary, a soft tug is given ( Dios siempre cuida a quién se mantiene fiel ).
“ I was just cleanin’ the tables – we’re about to close the bar. ” she mumbles, reluctant to look at him in the eye after her obvious display of uneasiness ( what does he want? what’s he after? ). still, she adds, “ if you wanna help, I guess you can do sweeping duty. broom’s over there in the corner. ”
“ let me explain. ” ( @redapt )
“ you have two minutes. ”
her gaze shifts from the man to the woman behind the bar counter – her mother is visibly anxious, it makes Felicitas wonder what she isn’t telling her own daughter about this man. Recklessness isn’t really a Cardozo trait ( they are calculating, cunning by nature ), it seems Felicitas has broken the mold – perhaps the reason why her mother looks so nervous, she’s afraid her daughter will make a stupid move. Whatever it might be that has Celita so concerned, it’s begun to take a toll in the way Felicitas looks at the stranger sitting across from her ( she’s been taught to fear no one, no man, woman, cop, criminal ). and yet …
eyes laid on the gun resting atop the table, she inhales sharply – there is nothing Felicitas hates more than letting a man see her uneasiness, it’s not something her father would be happy about. And to further conceal whatever gut feeling is telling her the stranger might be a fucking menace, she leans back on her booth, leg crossed over the other, arms spread across the backrest, “ one and a half, by now. tick tock. ”
she sees from the corner of her eye how her mother tenses, throws her an apprehensive glare and mouths something she cannot read at first, but sounds familiar to her – tené cuidado. Está armado. Be careful , he’s armed – and Celita continues cleaning empty glasses, but her eyes never once leave the pair sitting at the back of the bar. She’s ready to shoot him from the back if needed, Felicitas can tell. Mother vultures always take care of their babies.
“ y’know, if you need our help, you might as well spit it out – what happened? you wanna take out someone heavy but can’t do it on your own? ” a rather hoarse chuckle is offered, she adds, “ also, you’re being way too polite – we don’t get that much around here. ”

I’m two different people when I care and when I don’t
felicitas and her dad will refer to their gang and family as having “codigos”, which yes, is the spanish word for ‘codes’. however, it also is used in rioplatense lingo to commonly express someone who has some type of morality system. they don’t refer to it as ‘morals’, though, they talk about ‘codigos’, because to them, morals and codigos are different things that encompass different meanings. morals speak of self righteousness, that’s something feli’s father has always believed, while him saying his gang has ‘codigos’, explains that they uphold to some sense of what’s right: they might have an extremely grey morality at best, but there are lines they won’t cross ( harming children, or not keeping their word, for example ). their loyalty to each other is held within the boundaries of that word, ‘codigos’ -- they don’t tolerate traitors, or those who put their family in danger to save themselves first.
“ i need you to trust me. ” ( @shawky )
a pause in her actions, her eyes will shift from the two firearms she’s loading to the man sitting in front of her ( there’s no apparent emotion behind her gaze, yet the vulture is still studying carefully, analyzing each and every single aspect of the other’s appearance ). lying is her bread and butter, she’s all too good at it if she wants to ( and that’s a funny thing, her mother says it’s always better to tell half truths ), and still, she cannot read this man like she would want to. One thing is for sure – nothing in this world is given for free. There is always a transaction.
“ trust isn’t given – it’s earned. la confianza se gana. ” she mumbles, gaze and hands return to their previous task, but not before motioning with her chin towards the untouched bottle presented to him, “ you don’t trust me, or you’d be downing that booze. ‘fraid we’re gonna poison you? ” sardonic chuckle echoes past her lips, a small shake of her head ( trust is a big word, to someone like her, it weights more than any other ).
“ let’s say I do trust you, ” Felicitas’ voice is idle, picking up one of her guns and inspecting it, as if pondering whether or not to end this poor fucker’s life the easier way ( it’s all an act meant to keep him on his toes, she would never shoot anyone inside her mother’s bar ), “ what do you want? protection? I heard one of the cartels around here is givin’ you a rough time – what’s that you’re lookin’ for down in the border, indi? ” a pause is made for a snort, and she adds, “ my dad would like you. he loves indiana jones movies. what d’you say? you up for a visit to prison so you can tell him about your adventures? ”

“thank you. thank you. you’re a lifesaver.” ( @wtrss )
there is no emotion behind her eyes, darkened like charcoal, the moment their gazes interlock, and the blonde woman trembles, despite her attempt to not flinch at all. Has she ever seen a gun? Felicitas wonders what it must like to not have been raised around them – New York used to be absolute fucking chaos, her father remembers from the news, but now, they all act like they’re so civilized. Still, Felicitas supposes she prefers gratitude even if it comes alongside fear ( she’s used to people being scared of her, she prefers it that way – if you don’t fuck them, they fuck you ), and because gratitude can be easily exploited , she’s quick to conceal her gun back to its usual hiding spot, hair is tossed down her back, a few loose waves blown out of her face.
oh, but the smile on her face as she watched the two mugger scatter away in terror was feral – a true rattlesnake. Still, when she turns towards the woman, it’s changed, grown almost friendly. she’s a chameleon, her mother taught her that very well.
“ fuckin’ conchudos don’t know when to quit, huh? ” she mumbles, takes a step closer to the woman now that her firearm is out of sight – better not ring any alarms, she’s supposed to keep a low profile while in New York, “ you okay? ” a sideways curve of her lips, perhaps a sign of how foreign those words feel being uttered to someone else. Besides her family and her girls, Felicitas cares for no one else.
“ they didn’t take any money, right? ” she tilts her chin toward the handbag the blonde waitress clings to, and her lips return to a thin line, “ y’know that a woman with a gun’s twice as deadly as a man? my mother says it’s ‘cause they don’t expect us to shoot – and then? boom. ” hoarse chuckle echoes past her lips, she adds, “ might wanna look into that, blondie. i’m not gonna be around to save your ass forever. ”
