Where hardware meets sofware
The WorkBoy, a cancelled add-on for the Game Boy, developed by Source Research and Development and the prototypes produced by Fabtek.
The accessory would have connected to the Game Boy via its link cable port and transformed it into a personal digital assistant (PDA) with features like a calendar, calculator, and address book.
It was shown during the Computer Electronics Showcase of 1992 and was set to release later that year but was ultimately cancelled because according to Frank Ballouz, president of Fabtek, the unit was too expensive and would have cost as much as the Game Boy itself whose price was recently lowered around the time.
There are only two prototypes left in the world with one most likely deep within Nintendo's vaults, the other is in possession of Frank Ballouz, and with help from video game historian Liam Robertson, they were able to publicly demonstrate the device's functionality after all these years thanks to a leaked software cartridge from the Nintendo Gigaleak.
