Optical Illusion? This image was taken with DigitalGlobe satellites on April 22, 2013 of the Colorado River in Utah. The image has been ‘positioned’ to give an interesting optical illusion – the river seems to be flowing at the top of a large mountain chain! Rotating the image by 180 degrees provides a more familiar viewpoint – the river actually rests in a valley, as expected. Optical illusions, like this awesome photo by National Geographic (it’s in their top 50 ever photograph gallery) do have an important point to make. Perspective of the observer (or the wavelength which which they are viewing) can make a huge difference to the perceived attributes of a target. For example, astronomers need to ensure that their theories apply equally to galaxies that we can see side, and face-on. -CJ Image: DigitalGlobe Further Reading [Ed. note: from one of our commenters “If people don’t get it, just download it, open the picture and rotate it twice, you will then understand.”]
