Legitimate question, as I was off Tumblr for a couple weeks and came back to the hammercar meme shit. I've seen you say we need to take action. What actions can we take? Just being vocal? Are things we can actively be doing to make a difference with this? This is an honest good faith question I want to do SOMETHING other than just be angry. I'm already angry, I want to do something with it that will help.
This won't be a comprehensive guide on what the best actions to take are. For real change to happen, we need to actively and collectively support each other, especially those who are marginalized and vulnerable. I'll try listing things that I believe can make a difference and that most people can help doing
We need to support those who need financial help by boosting and donating to them. Especially people that are in desperate and immediate need of money. Please, check the links I included in this part of the post. People don't beg for money for fun. It's really important to spread donation posts, even if you can't donate to them. Please, consider donating whenever possible
Take commissions from artists, request drawings, buy games, and support all creative works you see in Tumblr by sharing them. If you engage with sexual content of any type made by sex workers, reblog and pay for their work. We need to support and destigmatize sex workers publicly. Remember to always tip if possible
Don't spread call out posts. Don't participate in or enable harassment/smear campaigns. Even if you believe that a call out post "this one time is actually warranted", it's not. They intentionally target vulnerable people, don't hold anybody accountable, and don't help the victims. Ignore them, block the people making them and move on
Follow and support black, indigenous, Palestinian, Latin American, disabled, transgender/non-binary bloggers, sex workers and other marginalized people as much as you can. Engage critically with what our communities are talking about, show support and boost our voices. Don't make this just about the cis guy in power
Help spread the word of people whose blogs have been unfairly terminated. Remember their names and urls, and preserve their posts. Screenshot and archive whatever you can. When they remake, boost their posts to help them find their friends, mutuals and communities. Show solidarity
Find, read and reblog posts contextualizing the situations that have led to the termination and erasure of entire groups in here. Talk about the erasure and censorship of posts, tags and blogs that talked about BLM, Ferguson, anti-blackness, anti-semitism, anti-colonialism, Palestine, Congo, Sudan, transmisogyny, transwomen, and so on
Be critical of Tumblr's staff past and recent actions against marginalized people, especially their recent treatment of black, Palestinian and transwomen bloggers. Consider taking legal action, like contacting the human rights commission. Also be critical of yourself and other users here. Don't debate about, argue or downplay our oppression and erasure. Take anti-blackness and transmisogyny seriously
Include us in your life, make friends, love and care about us. Love those who are outcasts, freaks, sluts, annoying, unproductive, and angry. Talk with us, show us decency and trust, look out for our safety and comfort. Make genuine connections. Don't write off our online relationships and communities. And, please, take the time to read the links I included
I'll finish by saying that I'm not an authority on what the best action to take is. There's a lot that needs to be done, mostly outside of the internet. Take action outside of Tumblr, think critically, read news and literature, stay informed and talk to marginalized people on how you can help with their specific struggles as groups, participate in communities, love the people you claim to care about
