I want a simple life. I want to get up late, drink tea, and read old books. I also want a spaceship and a pet dragon.
A lot of self-help advice is good advice. And a lot of it involves major lifestyle changes.
What I don’t see a lot talk about is the need to first get to a point where those changes can be made. A lot of us are stressed to the gills, overworked, underpaid, lonely, sedentary, doing nothing for pleasure, etc.
A lot of self-help focuses on directly changing those things, often in a piecemeal format. And that’s fine, and it can work.
But if you’re anything like me, by the time you started paying attention to self-help advice, you were already kind of at a point where incorporating it seemed just like another task for the list, a list that, AT THAT MOMENT couldn’t really be cut down.
Like for example if you’re working two jobs and going to school, okay you need the money. You need to stay in school (if that’s an important thing to you, as it was to me). You can’t afford time for this or that, and you also can’t afford money for all these other things. You’re already stressed and trying to fit in ten minute workouts isn’t going to work because it’s another task and when you can’t manage it, you just feel even worse about yourself.
Right? It’s not useful. No matter how good a workout would make you feel, at the moment, trying to plan workouts is actually making it all worse.
More self-help needs to address the need to first get to a space where self-help will work, where you have the mental space to deal with it. This isn’t exactly the same as thinking long-term (because that can be difficult when you’re in this place that self-help advice can’t quite reach.)
Maybe it’s as simple as “next term, less classes.” Like you still need to finish the term. But next term will actually be different. Maybe it’s setting a firm no to future projects or getting out of projects you’re already in, no matter how these projects are being pitched to you.
It won’t fix things right away. In fact, it won’t really fix anything, except that it’ll get you, eventually, to a place where you can START to fix things, finally. And goddamn, that is worth something.
Just. It’s a process. Make sure you have the tools before you start trying to fix something. Otherwise you’re just screaming and whacking a nail with your fist wondering why it’s just hurting you instead of building something nice.

me after a quiet day in: Time for a quiet night in
I know grown ass people who say “this just the way I am” alllll the time
Recognizing your own toxic behaviour is peak adulting. You don’t stop learning once you turn 18+.
My dad is almost 70 and always says he’s still growing, changing, and learning. That’s what life is, an ongoing experience that you gotta be open for change in.
“That’s just how I am” is bullshit, you don’t like it or you see it affects the ones you love negatively, you change that shit.
DAY IS MADE!
I truly go into housewife mode when im someones girlfriend like I will make u pancakes and bacon every morning and suck u up whenever u want

I just knew it would be real
Since telling my Mum that I considered myself ace, I already noticed that she was a bit… too interested, if you want to say it like that. Asking for “signs”, or how being ace feels like… I tried to answer her to the best of my ability, giving her links to websites that would explain better as I ever could.
Today she said, very quietly, “Do you think I could be ace, too?”
And I said very carefully “If you think it suits you, I don’t see why not”
And my Mum, my strong, self-confident Mum, who never once has ever felt uncomfortable in her own skin as far as I know, beamed in relief. Relief.
Because she never knew. Because getting married young and bearing children for her husband (meaning sex) was expected of her. Because everyone gave her the feeling as if something would be wrong or broken about her if she didn’t want, didn’t do that.
Because her whole life long, she thought there was something wrong with her.
I’m honestly torn between feeling happy and relieved for her, and angry that humanity has such trouble with showing some understanding to those who don’t fit in the boxes society has designed for all of us.
Update: My Mum was getting ready for bed when I noticed her humming loudly around her toothbrush and I asked her what the good mood was about.
She beamed around a mouth-full of toothpaste and said, very proudly and deliberately, “I think I like that, being ace.”
And continued on with her brushing, humming a bit louder.
(Or in other words, I’m more than a little bit teary eyed.)
I had almost the exact same conversation with my Mom. We were talking about the LGBT acronym and explained that it’s LGBTQ and that some people add the PIA at the end as well. And she asked me “What’s the a?” So when I explained it she said immediately “Me. That’s like me.” This is why I get so mad at people who think this is all just trendy bs, people just don’t have the vocabulary or permission to describe their lived experience.
This is the most wholesome thing I’ve ever read, bless this post 🙌🏼
