The sun was setting on the Pacific and the Seattle skyline when every single bar opened, with conversations on sidewalks with people walking around downtown and patio's at max compacity, it was a warm evening which was rare because of the rain. Inside one of the upscale cocktail bars, amber lights reflected against polished wood while a jazz remix played softly beneath the chatter.
Y/N on the other hand almost never came out anymore, between flights to New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Paris, and wherever Sports Illustrated needed her next, free weekends were practically nonexistent, but when she did have one, she always spent it with the people who had known her long before the fame.
Her friends had arrived before her and had already claimed a corner booth, her friends consisted of Ava, a corporate attorney for different big companies, Jasmine a pediatric surgeon at the childrens hospital, luckily she was off. Across from those two was another friend named Sofia a software engineer and finally, Natalie a real estate agent downtown who was a crazy negotiator.
Every single one of them had high paying careers, and every single one of them teased Y/N relentlessly for forgetting to text back. When Y/N finally walked in wearing dark jeans, a cream satin top beneath a leather jacket, and effortless curls framing her face, the booth immediately erupted.
"There she is."
"Look who remembered she lives in Seattle."
"The woman booked and busy."
Y/N laughed as she hugged each of them, "I was literally in Croatia three days ago."
"And?"
"And..that means I'm innocent."
"No," Ava answered immediately after, "It means you're rich."
"I'm not rich."
The entire table burst into laughter, "You model for Sports Illustrated," Natalie deadpanned.
"You've literally been on billboards."
"Your face is in Times Square."
Y/N rolled her eyes dramatically, "I'm just trying to survive."
"Sure."
Their drinks arrived, conversations bounced from work gossip to vacation plans, and for nearly an hour, Y/N forgot she had millions of Instagram followers and fans. She was just Y/N, one of the girls and was completely unaware that someone across the room hadn't stopped looking at her since she'd walked in.
At another booth sat several Seahawks players enjoying an off night together, for once in their lives, AJ sat back in his spot while listening to his quarterback, Sam Darnold exaggerating a golf story for the 5th time.
"I swear it was a birdie."
"It was a double bogey," Jaxon Smith Njigba laughed at the man.
"No it wasn't."
"It literally was."
They all shook their heads while AJ nearly spit out his drink laughing, but in the midst of that he stopped paying attention.
"Bro.."
Nothing.
"AJ."
Jaxon followed his gaze over to where Y/N was sat, "Oh.."
Another teammate followed, "OH."
"So that's where your attention went."
AJ rubbed the back of his neck, trying and failing to look casual, "I mean..."
"Brother," Sam interrupted. "Go talk to her."
"I'm not doing all that."
"You've been staring for twenty minutes."
"I have not."
"You absolutely have."
AJ sighed as he looked down at his phone.
Because they weren't wrong, she was beautiful in a way he couldn't describe it. He'd met celebrities before such as models, influencers, actresses. But nothing compared to her, it was something different.
She wasn't trying to look the way she looked, she wasn't glued to her phone. She laughed so hard at one of her friend's jokes that she leaned completely over the table, he noticed that before he snapped back to reality at someone speaking toward him.
"If you don't go, someone else will."
AJ looked over once again, "Fine."
His teammates immediately started grinning.
"There he goes."
"Our boy's nervous."
"He got butterflies."
"I do not have butterflies."
"You absolutely have butterflies."
Ignoring them, AJ walked across the room, Y/N had just excused herself from the table to order another drink when she noticed someone stepping beside her. She looked up at him, for his height he was extremely tall either way.
She smiled, "You're tall."
AJ laughed immediately.
"I get that a lot."
"I imagine."
For a second neither of them spoke, not because it was awkward.
Because they were both trying to process how attractive the other person was.
Finally AJ extended his hand.
"AJ."
She shook it, "Y/N."
"I know."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Oh?"
"I've definitely seen Sports Illustrated."
She laughed softly, "So you aren't just randomly talking to strangers?"
"I mean..." he grinned. "Technically yes and no."
She couldn't help smiling back as the bartender approached, "What can I get you?"
Before she answered, AJ spoke.
"I've got it."
She looked at him.
"You don't have to."
"I know."
"I can afford my own drink."
"I'm sure you can."
"So why?"
He smiled.
"Because I wanted an excuse to come over here."
She looked at him for another second before shaking her head with a grin.
"Smooth.."
"I practiced."
"You definitely didn't."
"No."
The bartender set her drink down and lone and behold AJ paid.
When they stepped away from the bar, neither one made any move to return to their respective groups. Instead they simply stood together near the windows overlooking the busy street.
The conversation came surprisingly easily, as they talked about Seattle.
Favorite coffee shops, the rain and travel. AJ admitted he'd never realized just how much modeling required until hearing about Y/N's schedule.
"You mean to tell me you flew to Italy for one photoshoot?"
"26 hours."
"For pictures?"
She nodded.
"I was there for 26 hours."
He blinked, "I complain about flying to Nashville."
"You should."
"It's terrible."
She laughed.
"So is sitting in makeup for four hours."
Eventually the conversation shifted naturally toward dating, Y/N shrugged, "I don't really date much."
"No?"
"No time."
"I get that."
"You?"
AJ hesitated and she noticed immediately.
"I mean..."
"It's complicated."
She smiled innocently even though she was curious, "Don't you have a girlfriend?"
The unanswered question lingered and his smile disappeared, he looked down into his glass for several seconds before quietly exhaling.
"Yeah."
Y/N immediately nodded.
"Oh."
"I'm sorry if this came across-"
"No."
He interrupted gently.
"It didn't."
She waited.
Something about his expression had changed completely, the confident football player was suddenly just tired and over it and after another long silence he finally admitted it.
"She's cheating."
Y/N blinked before continuing, her mouth slightly opened, "What?"
AJ gave a humorless laugh.
"I found out a while ago."
She stared at him.
"And you're.."
He shrugged, "Still there."
"Why?"
His shoulders lifted again before falling.
"I don't know," He looked toward his teammates laughing across the room.
"I've always been the guy that's supposed to just deal with stuff."
"Tough guy."
"Exactly."
"You don't complain."
"No."
"You don't let people know something hurts."
"No."
"And eventually..." he laughed quietly. "...you convince yourself maybe you deserve it."
Y/N's heart genuinely sank and he continued before she could say anything, "I keep telling myself it'll get better." He smiled, though it looked forced.
"It doesn't."
She studied him carefully.
For someone his size, and for someone who played one of the most physical positions in football, he suddenly looked unbelievably human.
"I think..." he admitted softly, "I just want someone who actually wants me."
He immediately laughed afterward, "That sounded pathetic."
"It didn't."
"It kinda did."
"No."
Her voice was firm now, "It sounded honest."
Their eyes met for a moment as the music around them disappeared, Y/N had expected arrogance from him, hell maybe even a ego.
Instead she'd found someone quietly carrying heartbreak.
"I'm really sorry," she said.
He nodded once.
"Thanks."
A small silence settled between them.
Then she smiled gently.
"I hope you know, someone out there is going to love you the way you're supposed to be loved."
He looked at her.
"That's probably the nicest thing someone's said to me in a while."
Her cheeks warmed slightly.
"Well..."
"I mean it."
Another pause, then AJ reached into his pocket.
"You know..."
He smiled again, this time genuinely.
"I'd really regret leaving tonight without asking."
He pulled out his phone.
"Would you maybe..give me your number?"
She laughed, "So this wasn't just about the drink."
"It definitely started with the drink."
"And now?"
He looked directly at her, "Now I'd like to know you."
Without another word she handed him her phone and saw him type in his number before handing it back.
She entered hers into his, "There."
"There."
They both smiled.
When they walked back toward their groups together, every single person noticed immediately, Sam elbowed Jaxon so hard he nearly spilled his drink.
"I TOLD YOU."
Jaxon whispered back, "Bro actually did it."
Everyone else was trying and failing not to grin.
Meanwhile, Y/N's table wasn't any better, Ava's eyes grew twice their normal size. Natalie mouthed No way and Jasmine was already smirking. Sofia simply sipped her drink like she had frontrow seats to the greatest entertainment of the night.
Neither group interrupted them. Instead, AJ and Y/N lingered between the tables, still talking.
Every few minutes one of them laughed and they drifted just a little closer. When AJ leaned down to hear something over the music, his shoulder brushed hers.
Neither moved away and later, while telling another story, Y/N instinctively touched his forearm as she laughed. He looked down at where her hand rested for half a second before meeting her eyes again, unable to hide the smile spreading across his face.
As the night continued, those little moments multiplied.
Walking through the crowded bar, his hand rested lightly against the small of her back for just long enough to guide her around someone without making a show of it.
When she joked about how ridiculously tall he was, she lightly nudged his shoulder, and he answered by pretending to measure the height difference with exaggerated seriousness, making her laugh all over again.
At one point she absentmindedly adjusted the cuff of his jacket while they stood talking, realizing what she'd done only after her fingers had brushed his wrist. Their eyes met, both smiling in quiet embarrassment before the conversation continued as though nothing had happened.
By closing time of the bar, neither of them wanted to go, and outside, Seattle's cool night air greeted everyone as groups spilled onto the sidewalk.
AJ walked Y/N toward her car while their friends deliberately stayed behind, pretending to be deeply invested in conversations they clearly weren't having. "So.." AJ said, rocking back slightly on his heels.
"So."
"I had a really good time."
She smiled, "I know."
"You know?"
"I can tell."
He laughed, "I'm not exactly subtle."
"No."
They stood there another few moments, neither eager to leave.
Finally Y/N reached out and gently squeezed his hand.
"I'm really glad you came over tonight."
His thumb instinctively brushed across the back of her hand before he let go, "Me too."
Then, with one last smile that neither of them could seem to stop wearing, they headed toward their separate cars. As AJ climbed into his truck, his phone buzzed before he'd even started the engine.
Y/N: "Drive safe, football boy. 😊"
He stared at the message for several seconds before laughing to himself, Across the parking lot, Y/N looked up just in time to see his headlights flash twice, as she started her car to head home.

Between Then and Now
The Bear AU (Part twenty-six B)
To my masterlist!
Pairing: Carmen x Fem! Ofc
Summary: One quiet night is enough to make Lisa realize that the space she thought she needed no longer feels the way it used to. And sometimes, the hardest part of letting someone stay is believing they truly intend to.
A little note before you start: Tumblr doesn’t allow posts longer than 4,000 characters, so I had to divide this chapter into two parts. Here's part two. I hope you enjoy it! ❤️ First part here
“Lisa?”
Carmy stepped inside, still in his work clothes, his jacket only half-zipped.
She stared at him.
“You said you were going to call.”
“Yeah.” He shut the door behind him. “I know.”
For a second, neither of them moved.
Carmy still had one hand wrapped around his keys. His cheeks were pink from the cold outside, his hair pushed into disarray by the wind. He looked like he had left in the middle of something—which, of course, he had.
Lisa glanced at the clock on the stove.
“You drove all the way here?”
“Yeah.”
“In the middle of prep.”
“Richie’s got it.”
“Richie?”
“And Syd. And Tina.”
She folded her arms loosely over herself.
“You left Richie in charge?”
His mouth twitched, but the almost-smile disappeared before it could fully form.
“I didn’t leave him alone.”
There it was again.
Quiet.
Careful.
Carmy dropped his keys into the bowl beside the door. The sound seemed strangely loud in the apartment.
Then he shrugged out of his jacket.
He hesitated before hanging it on the hook, like he was no longer sure whether he was supposed to.
Lisa noticed.
“You can put it there.”
His eyes moved to hers.
He hung it up.
The gesture should not have hurt.
It did.
He had put his jacket on that same hook for the past two weeks without thinking. Now every movement looked measured, as though he was waiting for her to tell him which parts of their life he was still allowed to touch.
Lisa looked away first.
“You didn’t have to come.”
“Yeah, I did.” He paused, searching for her eyes. “You wanted to talk.”
His voice was not impatient. If anything, the certainty in it made her more nervous.
“I said I didn’t know what I wanted to say.”
“Okay.”
“Could you stop saying okay?”
Carmy blinked.
“Sorry.”
“That’s not—” She pressed her lips together. “You don’t have to apologize for saying okay.”
“Okay.”
Despite herself, a small laugh escaped her.
Carmy’s shoulders lowered by barely an inch.
It only made the tightness in her chest worse.
He took a few steps into the kitchen, then stopped on the opposite side of the table.
Her laptop sat between them, the dark screen reflecting the light from the window. Beside it, her phone was still facedown.
“You finish?”
“The article?”
“Yeah.”
“Not really... Gotta work on it a bit more. Nick will still probably send it back covered in comments.”
“He always does that?”
“Usually.”
Carmy nodded.
The conversation dissolved.
Lisa stared at him.
He stared at the table.
They were talking about Nick.
He had left The Bear in the middle of prep because she had called him and admitted that something was wrong, and now they were standing in her kitchen talking about tracked changes.
“Carm.”
His eyes lifted immediately.
“I think last night came out wrong.”
He went very still.
“Okay.”
She gave him a look.
“Right. Sorry.”
Lisa rubbed her palms over the sides of her jeans.
“When I asked you not to come back…”
Carmy’s gaze dropped for a moment.
She hated that.
“I wasn’t trying to tell you I didn’t want you here.”
He looked at her again.
“It felt like that.”
The honesty of it landed harder than defensiveness would have.
Lisa swallowed.
“I mean, I know you didn’t say it like that,” he said, running his hand over his messy hair.
“But that’s what you heard.”
He shifted his weight.
“Kind of.”
Lisa said, “Why?”
His eyebrows drew together.
“Why?”
“Why did you think that?”
Carmy looked at her as though the answer were obvious.
“Because you asked me not to come back.”
“For one night.”
“Yeah.”
“That doesn’t mean I wanted you gone.”
“I wasn’t sure.”
The words were quiet. Not accusing.
That somehow made them worse.
Lisa leaned back against the counter behind her.
“You thought I wanted you to back off.”
“Yeah.”
Carmy rubbed his thumb over his lips.
“I’ve been here a lot.”
The statement was so simple that it took her a second to understand what he meant.
“I’m here in the mornings. I’m—I don’t know. Buying shit. Cooking. Moving stuff around.”
“You don’t move stuff around.”
“I moved the salt.”
“You moved it closer to the stove.”
“Yeah.”
“Because you complained about where I kept it for days.”
“It didn’t make sense over there.”
“It made sense to me.”
“Right.”
She watched him.
He was frowning now, not because of the salt, but because they had somehow wandered away from the thing they were both trying to say.
Carmy dragged a hand over his messy hair.
“I just thought maybe I’d…”
He stopped.
“What?”
“Taken up too much space.”
Lisa’s chest tightened.
There was no self-pity in the words.
Only a quiet conclusion he had reached while walking out of her apartment the night before.
“No.”
“Lis—”
“No.”
Her answer came so quickly that he stopped.
“You didn’t.”
“I texted Noah without talking to you.”
“And I wish you hadn’t.”
He nodded once.
“I know.”
“But that’s not the same thing, Carm.”
“It felt connected.”
“It wasn’t.”
“Then what was it, Lis?”
The question was not sharp. That was the problem.
If he had been angry, she could have defended herself. If he had accused her of pushing him away, she could have explained why that was unfair.
Instead, Carmy simply stood there and waited for an answer she still did not know how to give.
Lisa looked toward the window.
“I don’t know how to explain it.”
“Try.”
There was fear in his voice now, however hard he was working to keep it out.
Lisa pushed away from the counter and moved the laptop aside, needing something to do with her hands.
“Matt said something yesterday. About me spending so long waiting for something bad to happen that I don’t know what to do when it doesn’t.”
Carmy said nothing.
“I think he was right.”
She pulled out a chair and sat down.
Carmy remained standing until she gave him a tired look.
“You don’t have to pay for sitting, you know.”
He took the chair across from her.
Lisa looked at the small burn healing near one of his knuckles. She remembered cold water running over his hand. Ben calling Dada from the doorway. Carmy kissing her while she scolded him for not paying attention.
Just a few days before. A whole life contained in something that small.
“When I came back after dropping Ben off, I kept looking at my phone.”
His eyes shifted toward it.
“I kept thinking you were going to text.”
“I thought you wanted space.”
“I know.”
“That’s why I didn’t.”
“I know, Carmen.”
Frustration broke through at last.
“I know you listened. I know you didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Then why are you—”
“Because we’ve been here before.”
The words came out so suddenly that the room seemed to change around them.
Carmy stopped.
Lisa’s throat tightened.
Neither of them had to ask what she meant.
He knew.
She could see it in his face.
“New York,” he said.
Lisa nodded.
The word sat between them.
Heavy.
Old.
Still alive enough to hurt.
“Your things were everywhere,” she said. “Your clothes. Your notebooks. Those ridiculous coffee beans you always insisted on buying.”
Carmy looked down.
“Your toothbrush beside mine.”
“Lisa—”
“No. Just let me say it.”
He closed his mouth.
“I noticed every single thing. Every shirt you left. Every time you bought something for the apartment. Every night you stayed.”
Her voice caught.
“I thought it meant you were staying.”
Carmy’s jaw tightened.
“I wanted to, Lis. I—yeah. I did.”
“I know.” She shook her head gently. “I know you were in a different place. We both were. I’m not trying to punish you for that.”
He swallowed.
“And I know this isn’t the same. I know you aren’t the same.”
Lisa glanced around the kitchen.
“But it’s been happening again. Since we decided to try this.”
Carmy remained silent.
“You come home with Ben. You buy groceries. You know what he’ll eat when he’s tired. You know when I’m almost out of yogurt.”
A tear slipped free before she could stop it.
She wiped it away impatiently.
“You’re in everything now. His daycare. His dinner. My work. What time we go to bed.”
Her voice dropped.
“I didn’t realize how much of my life had started including you.”
Carmy’s hands tightened together.
“And then suddenly I did.”
The silence stretched.
“For one second, it felt like New York.”
His expression tightened.
“Lis… yeah. I—okay.”
“That’s the part I couldn’t understand.” She wiped beneath her eye again. “Because you show up.”
The words trembled.
“Every day. You tell me when you’re going to be late. You come back after service even when you’re exhausted and have to leave again a few hours later.”
She drew in a shaky breath.
“Back then, I waited for you.”
Carmy’s eyes closed briefly.
“Yeah.”
“Now you show up.”
He opened them again.
“You’ve made room for us in your life. I know that. That’s why none of it made sense.”
“But it still scared you.”
“Yes.”
The answer left her before pride could interfere.
“You thought I was gonna leave.”
Lisa opened her mouth.
Closed it.
“Maybe.”
Carmy waited.
She hated how patient he had become, because it left her with nowhere to hide.
“I know I’d be okay,” she said.
His forehead creased.
“What—what do you mean?”
“If you left.”
He went pale.
“I’m not— I’m not leaving.”
“Let me finish.”
Carmy stopped, jaw tightening.
“I know I’d survive it. I did before. I raised Ben. I worked. I made a life. I know I could keep doing all of that.”
Her hands trembled in her lap.
“But I don’t want to.”
The room seemed to narrow around them.
Lisa’s voice broke.
“I don’t want to have to learn how to live without you again.”
Something inside his expression gave way.
Carmy pushed his chair back, the legs scraping against the floor, and moved around the table.
Lisa’s breath caught.
For one second, she thought he was leaving.
Instead, he pulled out the chair beside her and sat down. Close, but not touching.
“Hey—look at me.”
His voice was rough.
Lisa lifted her chin.
His eyes were wet, the blue of them brighter for it, his brows drawn tight as though he was holding himself in place.
She had seen him unravel before.
She had seen him disappear inside himself.
This was different.
He was right there—terrified and completely present.
“I’m staying. I—yeah. Not going anywhere.”
“You can’t know that.”
“Yes, I can.”
“Carmen, people don’t get to promise that nothing will ever—”
“I’m not promising nothing’s gonna happen, okay?”
Urgency sharpened his voice.
“I’m not saying it’s always gonna be good. I’m not saying I’m never gonna fuck up— I mean, I will. I do.”
A soft, shaky laugh escaped her.
Carmy’s mouth twitched.
“I mean, I’ve got a reputation for it, right?”
“Yeah,” she whispered. “You do.”
He leaned slightly toward her, one hand resting on his thigh.
“But I know what I’m choosing. I— I know that.”
Lisa held his gaze.
“This isn’t just happening to me. I didn’t end up here by accident.”
Her breath caught.
“I don’t stay over because it’s easy. I don’t pick Ben up because there’s nobody else.”
He stopped, exhaled through his nose, then forced himself to continue.
“I want him to see me at the door.”
Lisa’s eyes filled again.
“I want to know what he’ll eat when he’s sick. Which blanket he needs when he sleeps. Where you keep the Tylenol.”
His voice roughened.
“I come back after service because I want to wake up with you. Even if it’s, like, four hours later, I— I still come back.”
Her lower lip trembled.
“I asked Noah and Matt to dinner because they’re your family. And I want to know them. I want to be part of that.”
He looked directly at her.
“I chose this.”
A beat.
“I keep choosing it. Every day.”
Lisa could barely breathe.
“I want to be Ben’s dad. I want all of it. All of it.”
His jaw tightened.
“But I’m not here only because he’s mine. That’s not it.”
Something in her chest cracked open.
“I’m here because of you. I’m here for you.”
“Carm…”
“I want this life, Lisa.”
His hand moved between them, not quite touching her.
“You can ask me for a night, Lis. You can tell me you need space. That’s— that’s okay.”
She looked at him.
“I’m still coming back. I am.”
The words landed quietly.
Completely.
“I don’t want you waiting for me to leave.”
Lisa looked down at his hand.
Then she reached for it.
Her fingers slid over his, uncertain at first, before she laced them together.
Carmy stilled.
She held their joined hands between them like something fragile.
Then she moved closer and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, shifting fully into him until she was straddling his lap, one leg on each side of his.
Carmy froze for half a second.
His arms came around her immediately after, firm and warm, pulling her against him.
Lisa pressed her face into his neck, settling closer against him.
He held her like he meant it.
Not tightly enough to trap her.
Only enough to let her feel that he was there.
When she lifted her head, their foreheads rested together.
“I’m staying, alright?” he said again.
His voice was low now.
Certain.
Then, softer—
“Because I love you, Lis.”
Lisa didn’t answer immediately.
Her hand rose to his cheek.
Warm.
Real.
Carmy went still beneath her touch.
Her thumb brushed lightly over his skin, and she closed her eyes for a second.
It hurt.
Not in the way she had feared.
In the way something long denied finally being named could hurt.
“I should’ve—” he stopped, exhaled through his nose, tried again. “I should’ve said it before.”
Her eyes opened.
“When?”
Carmy didn’t hesitate, but his jaw tightened like he was bracing anyway.
“New York.”
Something in her expression broke open.
“I loved you then,” he said, voice catching slightly before he forced it steady. “I just— I didn’t say it. I didn’t… know how to say it without—” He cut himself off, shaking his head once. “I didn’t say it.”
Lisa’s fingers stilled against his face.
“I’m sorry.” His voice was rough and uneven, words coming out in pieces. “For leaving. For not— for not saying any of it. For making you—” He swallowed. “For making you figure it out without me.”
She studied him closely.
The man who had once left her with nothing.
The man holding her now, forcing himself to say everything he hadn’t before.
“I love you too,” she said.
The words came softly.
Steadily.
Carmy’s breath caught, like he hadn’t quite let himself expect it.
She saw them reach him somewhere he had not prepared to defend.
Lisa slid her hand into the hair at the back of his neck and pulled him toward her.
The kiss began softly. Only for a second.
For two weeks, they had stopped themselves at this exact edge. Kisses that deepened and then softened. Hands that wandered only far enough to remind them what they were waiting for.
They had called it taking things slowly.
And it had been that.
But it had also been fear.
There was nothing left between them to hide behind.
Carmy’s hand tightened at her waist, and something inside both of them finally gave way.
Lisa kissed him harder.
He answered with a quiet, broken sound against her mouth, his other arm wrapping around her as he pulled her closer across his lap. There was no careful space left between them now. No breath in which either of them could remember why they had spent so many nights stopping.
His mouth moved over hers with a hunger that made her fingers tighten in his hair.
“Lis,” he breathed.
She felt the word more than heard it.
Carmy drew back barely far enough to look at her, his breathing uneven, his forehead pressed against hers.
Lisa could still see the question in his eyes.
Not uncertainty.
Care.
She held his gaze.
“Don’t stop this time.”
Something changed in his face.
“I won’t.”
He kissed her again.
The restraint disappeared.
His hand slid beneath the back of her shirt, warm against her skin, and Lisa arched closer before he had even fully touched her. Carmy inhaled sharply, his fingers spreading over her back as though he needed to feel all of her at once.
She kissed his cheek, his jaw, the place beneath his ear that made his breathing catch.
For once, he did not pull away when the want became too much.
He let her feel it.
The heat of him beneath her. The unsteady movement of his chest. The way his hands trembled slightly despite how firmly he held her.
Lisa shifted from his lap only long enough to stand.
Carmy’s hand caught hers immediately.
She took one step toward the hallway.
He followed.
They made it only a few feet before he pulled her back and kissed her again, one hand settling at her waist while the other cupped the back of her neck.
Lisa smiled against his mouth.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
His lips found hers again before she could say anything else.
The short walk to the bedroom became a series of interrupted steps, their hands never quite leaving each other. At the edge of the bed, Lisa turned toward him.
Carmy stopped.
The pale afternoon light fell through the curtains, catching in her hair and across the flushed skin of her face.
He looked at her as though he had never seen her before.
Not because he had forgotten.
Because she was not exactly the woman he remembered.
Neither of them was.
Lisa reached for the hem of his shirt and pulled it upward. Carmy helped her, dropping it somewhere beside the bed without looking away from her.
Her hands settled against his chest.
She remembered the shape of him, but there were years beneath her fingertips now. New scars. Harder lines. Evidence of a life she had not been there to witness.
Carmy reached for her shirt.
He paused with his fingers beneath the fabric.
Not asking.
Waiting.
Lisa lifted her arms.
He drew it over her head slowly.
The shirt fell to the floor.
For a moment, Carmy only looked at her.
His gaze moved across her face, her shoulders, the body that had changed since he had last known it this way.
Lisa felt unexpectedly exposed.
Not ashamed.
Only seen.
Carmy’s eyes lowered to the faint, pale lines across her hips and lower stomach.
His expression shifted.
There was no surprise in it. No pity.
His thumb moved carefully over one of the lines.
“You’re beautiful, Lis.”
Her throat tightened.
“Carm—”
“I mean it.”
There was no urgency in the words.
No attempt to convince her of something he did not believe.
He simply looked at her.
All of her.
Like there was nothing he wanted her to hide.
He lowered himself and pressed his mouth to the place his fingers had touched.
Lisa’s breath caught.
Carmy kissed another faint line.
Then again, closer to her hip, his hand warm against her side.
Her fingers slipped into his hair.
Carmy looked up at her.
“Thank you.”
Lisa went still.
“For what?”
His jaw tightened slightly.
For a moment, she thought he might try to explain.
He didn’t.
“Everything.”
The word came out rough.
Barely more than a whisper.
Lisa understood anyway.
She drew him back to his feet and kissed him before either of them could become overwhelmed by everything contained inside it.
The tenderness remained, but it no longer softened the desire. It deepened it.
They undressed each other without hurry.
Not because they were uncertain.
Because they had waited too long to rush through any part of it.
Every piece of clothing revealed something familiar and something new. Carmy’s hands moved over her with quiet attention, relearning the shape of her. Lisa did the same, tracing scars she did not recognize and feeling his muscles tighten beneath her palms.
They were not trying to recreate New York.
They were meeting each other as they were now.
Carmy reached for the button of his jeans, then stopped.
“Shit.”
Lisa looked up from where she sat at the edge of the mattress.
“What?”
“Nothing. I just—”
He reached into the back pocket and pulled out his wallet.
Understanding dawned when he opened it and pulled out the condom tucked inside.
Lisa’s eyebrows lifted.
“You came prepared.”
Carmy’s face flushed immediately.
“I didn’t come here expecting this.”
“Of course not.”
The smile in her voice made his eyes narrow.
“I’ve just had it.”
“In your wallet?”
“Yeah.”
“For emergencies?”
“Lis.”
She laughed softly and reached for his wrist, drawing him closer until he stood between her knees.
“So, what?” Her fingers moved idly against his skin. “Not ready for another one yet?”
She meant it as a joke.
Carmy’s expression changed.
“Not yet.”
Lisa’s smile softened.
“Yet?”
He glanced down at the condom in his hand, suddenly looking more nervous than he had while undressing her.
“I mean—not now.”
“I understood that part.”
His eyes returned to hers.
“But not never.”
Something warm tightened beneath her ribs.
“You’ve thought about it?”
“A little.”
“Carmen.”
He exhaled, almost frustrated at being caught.
“I don’t know. Maybe someday.”
His gaze held hers.
“If you wanted.”
“If I wanted to.”
“Yeah.” His answer came immediately. “Only if you wanted to.”
Lisa studied him.
The man who had discovered he was a father only months ago was already allowing himself to imagine doing it differently.
Being there from the beginning.
The thought was almost too tender to hold.
She stood, slid her hand around the back of his neck, and pulled him down.
“Ask me again in a year.”
Carmy’s mouth brushed hers.
“Yeah?”
“Maybe.”
His quiet laugh disappeared into their kiss.
Carmy set his wallet aside and stepped out of his jeans. His usually precise fingers were less steady as he tore open the foil, and Lisa couldn’t help the small smile that touched her mouth.
He glanced at her.
“What?”
“Just watching.”
His eyes narrowed, but she caught him by the back of the neck before he could ask again.
Lisa moved backward onto the mattress, taking him with her.
Carmy followed, settling above her, his hair falling over his forehead and his lips swollen from kissing her.
For a moment, he only looked at her.
Then his forehead rested against hers.
“Tell me,” he whispered.
It was not a question about whether she wanted this.
They both knew that now.
Lisa touched his mouth with her fingertips.
“What?”
“What you want.”
Her heart beat hard against her ribs.
“You.”
Carmy closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, the last trace of restraint was gone.
He kissed her as he settled between her thighs, one hand sliding down her body with a care that made every touch feel deliberate. Lisa drew him closer, her leg curling around him, her mouth finding his shoulder when his fingers made her breath catch.
Carmy listened to every sound she made.
Watched every shift in her face.
Not nervously.
Hungrily.
As though learning what she wanted was part of wanting her.
When he finally moved inside her, both of them went still.
Carmy’s forehead dropped to hers.
His breath shook.
Lisa held his face between her hands.
For one suspended moment, neither of them moved.
They had been here before, years ago.
But it had never felt like this.
There had always been something unspoken between them then. Something Carmy could not name and Lisa had been too afraid to ask for.
Now there was nothing left unsaid.
“I love you,” he whispered.
Lisa’s eyes burned.
“I love you too.”
She kissed him.
Then moved beneath him.
Carmy’s breath broke against her mouth.
They found each other slowly.
Not perfectly.
They had both changed. Their bodies had changed. The rhythm they remembered no longer belonged to them.
So they made another one.
Carmy adjusted when she pulled him closer. Slowed when her hand tightened against his shoulder. Lisa learned the new sounds he made, the places where tension gathered beneath his skin, the way his control slipped whenever she said his name.
There was no performance in it.
No attempt to make up for the years between them.
Only the quiet, overwhelming discovery that they could still belong to each other without becoming the people they had once been.
The pleasure built slowly, tangled with something deeper until Lisa could no longer separate one from the other.
Carmy’s hand found hers against the mattress.
Their fingers locked together.
He looked at her the entire time.
In awe.
In love.
As though he still could not believe she had chosen him back.
When the feeling finally broke through her, Lisa pulled him close, his name catching against his shoulder.
Carmy held her through it.
His mouth pressed to her temple, her cheek, anywhere he could reach.
He followed with her arms still around him, his face buried against her neck, her name leaving him like something sacred.
Afterward, he did not immediately move away.
His weight settled carefully against her, his face still hidden beside hers, their joined hands resting against the pillow.
Lisa felt his heartbeat slowly begin to ease.
Neither of them spoke.
They did not need to fill the silence.
This silence was different.
Carmy lifted his head eventually.
His eyes found hers.
Lisa touched the damp curl resting against his forehead.
He turned his face and kissed her palm.
Nothing was holding them back anymore.
Not New York.
Not the years between them.
Not the fear that loving each other would somehow make the loss inevitable.
They were here.
Together.
And this time, they had both said it.

notes: contemplating a part 3... idk set to 9 months later.. colstons semi toxic as a baby daddy??? but he does change towards the end, y/n HUMBLES THE SHITT out of him.. i am posting a baby dalia universe smau tonight to uplift the mood
warning: none
If you told Y/N that 9 months would change everything for Y/N, she’d believe you. Chicago had become Y/Ns home though it had never truly felt like one. The penthouse overlooking the river was great considering that 20 thousand dollars would directly deposit into her account just for the child. He’d made that choice himself before the birth.
It never filled empty chairs. It never replaced a father showing up without being forced to, it never answered the questions that eventually every child asked.
By the time labor began, Y/N had accepted that reality. And the moment they placed him across her chest everything else disappeared. Every night every tear, every fear, every lonely appointment, every ultrasound she had watched by herself every kick she had felt alone, all of it suddenly seemed like she had a genuine reason to live longer. The doctors and nurses moved efficiently around her while encouraging her through every stage of labor. Her best friend never left her side, wiping tears from her face and reminding her she was stronger than she believed. Every push gave everything she had left.
Then one final cry filled the room, a tiny, healthy little boy announced himself to the world with strong lungs.
9 pounds and 21 inches long.
Dark hair already covering the top of his tiny head, also with long fingers and even longer legs, and one of the nurses laughed almost immediately.
"He definitely got somebody's height,” Y/N barely heard them. Y/N cried harder than she had in months as she kissed the top of his forehead. His name had taken weeks to decide. She had considered giving him her last name countless times. Friends encouraged it and family supported whatever decision she made.. After months of thinking she chose otherwise, his birth certificate reading Mason Loveland. And it wasn’t because Colston had earned it not because he had been there enough. Because Y/N believed Mason deserved the opportunity to choose for himself someday without wondering why his name had a mistake attached to it.
A few hours later, a quiet knock interrupted the silence of the room. Y/N looked toward the door expecting another nurse, but no, it was Colston. Behind him his mother, Rachel quietly rested a hand against his shoulder before giving him an encouraging nod. She carried a gift bag decorated with tiny blue elephants while Colston simply stared toward the bassinet across the room.
Neither of them had spoken in three weeks, mainly because he was too ‘busy’, and Y/N hadn't expected him but really in reality she didn’t want to.
His mother quietly congratulated Y/N before asking permission to meet him. Y/N, despite everything, had never blamed Rachel for her son's mistakes. She gave a small nod and she lifted him into her arms gently.
Rachel gently lifted Mason into her arms, "Oh my goodness… " Her voice cracked almost immediately.
"He looks exactly like Colston did,” and when she said that, Colston slowly walked toward the bassinet. He looked terrified but luckily he was not panicked anymore, just.. overwhelmed.
Mason yawned, stretching tiny fingers into the air completely unaware that two adults were standing over him carrying months of hurt between them, "He has your eyes," Colston whispered.
She didn’t respond at that compliment, and the silence settled again. She stayed for less than twenty minutes. He congratulated her, asked her if she was recovering fine then looked over at the baby before leaving. Just like the baby shower, just like every appointment before.
He had opportunities to prove that he wanted to be present, and after three months he was still fumbling. Y/N never stopped him from seeing Mason.
She simply refused to rearrange her entire life every time he suddenly remembered he had a son.
One gray afternoon, Mason had a routine pediatric appointment at the children hospital.
Y/N carried him through the hallways with practiced ease, balancing the diaper bag over one shoulder while gently bouncing the now-smiling baby against her chest. Mason had his father's height already and loved flashing his gummy smiles at nearly everyone who walked by.
She had just stepped out of the examination room...
When she nearly walked straight into Colston.
He looked equally surprised.
Apparently he had been visiting a teammate nearby who was in the regular hospital and was walking past the childrens unit.
Nobody moved, then Mason squealed happily, recognizing the familiar face despite him not being around and Colston smiled almost instantly.
Y/N sighed quietly.
"You can hold him." He carefully took Mason in his arms, and the baby grabbed onto the front of Colston’s hoodie, loving the drawstrings.
He laughed at the baby, it was probably the happiest she'd seen him in months. Everything felt almost normal. Then Colston casually mentioned that training camp had been consuming nearly every hour of every day.
Y/N listened silently until finally months of frustration reached the surface. "The NFL didn't stop you from becoming his father."
Colston's smile disappeared.
She continued before he could interrupt, "It just gave you another excuse."
Several people walking down the hallway instinctively glanced toward them before continuing on.
Colston lowered his voice, "Y/N..."
"No."
She folded her arms, "I sat through appointments by myself."
"I know."
"You don't."
"I said I know."
"You showed up to three OB appointments."
"I was trying-"
"You showed up to one baby shower."
"I know."
"You missed everything else."
His jaw tightened, "I couldn't always-"
"You couldn't always make time for your own kid."
The words landed heavily between them, Colston shifted Mason carefully against his shoulder before answering, obvious frustration creeping into his voice.
"You think I don't regret that?"
"I think regret is easy."
He looked away briefly before meeting her eyes again.
"I'm here now."
"Now?"
Her voice stayed calm, "He's already here, Colston."
The hallway became painfully quiet as doctors did continue to pass them like nothing was happening, and that's when Y/N finally said the sentence she had buried for months.
"You were so scared of taking accountability that you forgot someone else was depending on you."
Colston's expression hardened, "Y/N are we really doing this right now?"
She looked directly at him, "You can't really raise a man, huh."
The sentence hit him harder than she expected and his face immediately tightened.
He looked genuinely angry now, "That's low."
"Is it?"
"My mom raised me."
"And she did the best she could."
He stared as she started right back up, "But somewhere along the way," Y/N continued quietly, "you learned that showing up only when it's convenient is enough."
He opened his mouth then closed it again, because deep down he couldn't honestly argue. Mason giggled between them, completely oblivious to the tension, reaching tiny hands toward both of their faces at once.
His parents stood only a few feet apart, and neither of them noticed Rachel stepping off the nearby elevator at the end of the hallway.
She spotted the argument almost instantly.
Rachel had raised Colston long enough to know exactly what his body language meant. Across from him, Y/N stood with months of exhaustion written across her face. There were dark circles beneath her eyes that makeup couldn't hide, she could see what motherhood without a consistent partner had cost her, she was going through something and he couldn’t open his eyes.
Without saying much, she stepped between them with practiced gentleness, smiling softly as she reached toward her grandson.
"Come here, sweetheart," she said quietly. "Let's let Mommy and Daddy talk for a second."
Colston hesitated before carefully placing Mason into his mother's arms.
Almost immediately, Rachel began rocking him against her shoulder while softly rubbing his back. Mason settled within seconds blinking as her rocking worked, giving them space if everything boiled over, she could step back in.
For several long seconds neither Y/N or Colston spoke until she did, and she sounded calm for once.
"I'm tired of waking up every two hours by myself. I'm tired of doctor's appointments by myself. I'm tired of knowing every single thing about our son while you have to ask me what size diapers he wears because you haven't been around enough to notice he's already grown out of the last size."
Colston lowered his head.
She wasn't finished, "I never stopped loving you."
His eyes snapped back toward hers, "I tried," she admitted, tears beginning to gather. "God knows I tried. I wanted to hate you because it would've been easier. But every time Mason smiles, every time he laughs.. I see pieces of you in him, and it reminds me of the man I fell in love with."
"But you keep..." Her voice cracked, “pushing me away."
Another tear slipped down her cheek, "It makes me want to just move on."
And for the first time he genuinely looked afraid, not afraid of football but afraid of losing her forever. His voice came out quieter than she’d ever heard him.
"I always loved you, Y/N,” he said as she laughed through tears.
"You had a funny way of showing it."
"I was scared."
"I know."
"I didn't know how to-"
"I know."
"I thought I'd ruin everything."
"You already did."
Neither of them raised their voices, they didn't need to.Y/N looked toward Rachel in the distance, smiling softly as Mason reached for her hair.
Then she looked back at Colston.
"I'll never enjoy my twenties again like you are."
He immediately shook his head.
"Y/N-"
"No."
“You get to travel, focus on football, sleep through the night, go out with your teammates. YOU get to wake up and think about yourself before anyone else.” She looked up at him with tears flowing down her eyes.
“I never made it to that stage, I have a baby boy who doesn’t even know who the fuck his dad is.” Colston flinched at her tone, "But he loves his momma."
"And when I leave the room and he's with you..."
She paused before resuming, "He starts screaming."
Colston closed his eyes, "That should tell you how much you aren't there for."
The sentence shattered something inside him, because it was true. Neither of them noticed Rachel quietly looking away, giving them privacy while gently bouncing Mason against her shoulder. Eventually, Y/N couldn’t stand there anymore and, without another word, she turned and walked toward the parking garage.
Colston followed several steps behind, by the time she reached her car, her emotions had completely caught up with her.
She opened the driver's side door but never climbed inside. Instead, she lowered herself into the seat sideways, one foot still resting on the concrete. The tears she'd been fighting for months finally came all at once and her shoulders shook uncontrollably.
Colston stopped beside the open driver's door, he didn't know whether he had earned the right to comfort her.
He wasn't sure she'd even let him so he stood there.
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Don't cry..."
Y/N couldn't stop and he swallowed hard at that.
"Please don't."
Another tear rolled down his own face, "I never want to see you cry."
She lowered her hands just enough to look at him and for the first time she saw that he was crying too.
Not from frustration, and it was from regret, deep regrets, his voice cracked completely.
"I'm so sorry." The words came out uneven.
"So... so sorry."
He shook his head repeatedly, unable to look away from her.
"I thought if I focused on football, if I got everything together... then I'd come back and be the man you deserved."
He laughed at himself for being a dumbass.
"But all I did..." He wiped at his eyes. "..was leave you to become the parent both of us were supposed to be."
Y/N stared at him in silence as he shrunk himself down emotionally. Like the weight of everything had finally caught up with him. Several parking spaces away, Rachel gently held Mason against her shoulder, watching quietly but making no move to interrupt.
She looked down at her grandson, who had already drifted asleep, and was unaware that his mom had just opened something new inside Colston’s brain.

The BAU had a pretty serious reputation.
Highly skilled, highly specialized, and highly exclusive.
You had a plan. Once you graduated from the academy you would get yourself assigned to a nearby field office, something in Virginia. After a few years in the field, once you prove yourself, you will go directly to Quantico and meet with the unit chief, in person, to show how serious you are about being a profiler.
Half of your class had similar ambitions but you were serious. You already had your degree in psychology and with your abilities you could be a useful asset to their team.
You have the drive and the ambition to make it happen, you’re certain.
So imagine the look on your face when SSA Aaron Hotchner approached you one day after class.
Your hands trembled when you shook his.
Your head was spinning, you caught bits and pieces of what he was saying.
“Highly recommended by your professors… Jason Gideon’s retirement… fresh new faces… good influence on the rest of the team… specialty in forensics.”
You nodded along, and thanked him profusely when he handed you a business card and told you to call him when you graduated.
And suddenly, a quick six months later, you were stepping out of the elevator and into the busy bull pen. Straightening the blouse you’d spent the last two weeks agonizing over.
You had a duffle bag full of clothes and toiletries, just as you’d been instructed to bring. And you’re large over the shoulder purse, filled with anything and everything, prepared for anything your first day could possibly throw at you.
You were going to be a profiler, the best profiler the BAU has ever seen, and you’ll be damned if you let anything get in your way.
People shuffled around you, heads down in their files and phones as you weaved through them until you reached Agent Hotchner's office. He hung up the phone when you opened the door and stood to greet you. Telling you how happy he was that you accepted his offer. (As if you could ever say no.)
“Let’s introduce you to the team, and then I’ll show you to your desk. Everyone's been briefed on your arrival and I’m sure they’re all eagerly awaiting an introduction.” He gave you a practiced, professional smile as he led you out of his office and back into the bullpen.
You followed closely behind him as he took you down a hallway, stepping into a side room you were met with a wall of screens and two people crowded around them.
“Allow me to introduce you to Agent Garcia and SSA Morgan.” He had urged you inside as you stared in awe. You’re familiar with both of them.
Penelope Garcia, originally on the FBI’s watchlist, was arrested and offered a deal to avoid prosecution by joining the team instead. She’s a prolific hacker, she’s practically famous online.
And of course you’re familiar with the shockingly handsome man beside her.
Derek Morgan, seasoned member of the team with a focus on obsessional crimes and explosives.
You know the whole team like the back of your hand and right now you feel like a fangirl at a meetup event.
“Wow, it is- it’s so nice to meet you.” You held your hand out, relieved to be met with a handshake from both of them.
Reserved but optimistic.
They’re open to the idea of you, they just aren’t sure yet.
You’ve been practicing your profiling.
You exchanged pleasantries, nodded and laughed when it was appropriate. All of the things you promised yourself you would do to keep your cool.
After a few minutes of small talk you followed Hotch out of the room, to a different office where you meet Agent Jareau.
Jennifer Jareau, media relations and police liaison.
Also notably, drop dead gorgeous.
And she couldn’t have been sweeter. Complimenting your outfit as your face burned hot as the sun.
You run into your next introduction in the hall on the way to the bull pen.
“This is SSA Prentiss.”
Oh, you know who she is.
Emily Prentiss. Linguistics expert, with a specialty in terrorism and counter-intelligence. Her mother was a relatively notable U.S. diplomat.
You must be smiling like an idiot when you shake her hand.
You continue following behind Agent Hotchner, feeling like a kid in a candy store as you return to the bullpen.
“And of course, saving the best for last, your deskmate, Dr. Reid.” Agent Hotchner leads you to an empty desk, directly adjacent to the young man who has his head in a book.
You’re more than familiar with him.
Dr. Spencer Reid, the youngest person ever recruited for the BAU. You’ve heard that he can read 10,000 words a minute. He has an eidetic memory, and an IQ of 187. You had a friend who met him once at a lecture, she told you that he’s a staunch germaphobe.
When he looks up you know you’re done for.
Sharp angled features, accentuated as he tucks his hair behind his ears.
His wide hazel eyes size you up as he closes his book.
“I figured as the youngest members of our team you would get along well enough to share a desk. I’ll leave you to set up your space, we’ll meet in the conference room in an hour.” You watch as Agent Hotchner returns to his office, leaving you alone with Dr. Reid.
“It’s so nice to meet you.” For the first time you don’t offer up your hand, you just smile at him. “Let me know if you like the desks a certain way or if I set anything up in a way that bothers you at all.” You take a few things out of your purse and place them carefully on the large wooden desk. A framed picture of you with some friends from the Academy, a few trinkets from home to fill the space, and several notebooks and pens.
“You look a bit young for the BAU.” Spencer leans towards the little glass partition between you.
“Not as young as you were when you started, what was it, twenty three?” You’re thrilled that he’s even talking to you, even if you’re being a bit overeager. Your friend had told you he was a little awkward if not outright abrasive.
She hadn’t told you he was so pretty.
“Twenty two actually, what else have you heard about me?” He fully stands and moves to lean on your desk as you rock back in your chair, his eyes wander across your desk, you can’t help but wonder if he’s trying to profile you.
“I heard that you have three PHD’s, you got your first when you were only sixteen, and you’re working on a fourth. You have an eidetic memory, and an IQ of a hundred and eighty seven, and you can read ten thousand words a minute.” You ramble without thinking about it, hoping in the back of your mind that you aren’t scaring him off.
“It’s actually twenty thousand.” His eyes lock onto your face now, clearly gauging your reaction.
“Really? Do you really actually retain the information?” You give him a smile and are remarkably pleased when he returns it.
“As far as I can tell.”
“How was your last deskmate?”
“I didn’t have one, Hotch says I have a personal space problem.” He looks a bit abashed at that, you’re surprised he even admits it so plainly.
“Was there no other spot available?” You look around the room, sure every desk is full but there are several clumps of three and four, you could have joined a different group.
“There definitely were, but he seems convinced that I can be more sociable.”
“If you want me to, I can probably move my desk to a different clump.” The last thing you want to do is upset one of your team members on your first day.
“I wasn’t trying to imply-” His cheeks and ears burn red. “Hotch is right, it’ll probably be good for me to make a few friends.” Hesitantly he held his hand out to you.
Your smile practically doubles in size as you shake it.
“It’s nice to make your acquaintance then, Dr. Ried.”
“Likewise.”
★
You decide not to tell Spencer what you talked about with Peter.
It would only serve to stress him out. That’s what you tell yourself at least.
When you wake the red door is shut and locked once more, which puts you both on edge. What could possibly be waiting for you once it’s opened? Instead of stewing on it too much you spend the morning wrapped in Spencer's arms, enjoying a moment of normalcy before whatever the day brings crashes down upon you.
Normalcy.
Is this what normalcy looks like now? Is this what your life will be like outside of here? You aren’t sure you could live without him after all this, and you have to imagine he feels the same way.
He’s certainly gone to extremes to show you that.
“What’s the first thing you’re gonna do after the team finds us?” You take his hand in yours, examining the burnt stumps of his fingers as you break the silence.
“Probably go to a hospital, and then a dentist.” He doesn’t pull away, letting you trace shapes mindlessly against his palm.
“Well yeah, obviously. Aside from the obvious things, what will you do first?” You turn to look at him, despite everything he still smiles at you.
“I haven’t given it much thought, I’m more focused on getting out of here first.”
“Just play along, please?” You groan.
“Why don’t you tell me what you’ll do first?” He leans forward, bumping his forehead against yours.
You have to think about it for a moment.
“I want to get my nails done. I was putting it off before all of this and now I definitely need it. Just the longest, most extravagant mani-pedi they offer.” Looking down at your hands now there’s blood under your nails, and your wrists are raw and bruised.
“Then I imagine the first thing I would do would be sit in a salon waiting room until you’re done.” You aren’t sure if he’s joking or not and thinking too hard about it makes your head hurt so you change the subject.
“What was the first thing you did after you were kidnapped by Tobias Hankel?” It’s probably too personal of a question but at this point are there really boundaries between the two of you?
You know you haven’t crossed a line because he answers without hesitation.
“I took a long shower, like two hours long. I just stood under the water, they had sent me home alone and I just wasn’t sure what else to do.” He pauses, chewing his lip as he thinks. “I felt alone for a long time after that.”
You wonder if that’s how you’ll feel. That’s probably how you’re supposed to feel.
Except you aren’t alone.
You have him.
It’s funny, you’ve known him less than a year but right now it feels like you’ve always been together. You hardly remember life without Spencer.
“What happens when we leave here?” The words tumble from your mouth before you can stop them.
What happens to us?
That’s the real question on your mind.
“I guess we go back to work, that’s sort of what everyone does when something like this happens. Everyone pretends it didn’t happen.” He sounds… hurt.
You have a hard time swallowing his words.
Something like this.
Like this is something you’re expected to go through.
“Are we going to be okay?” Your brain feels like it’s becoming more and more scrambled, the line between performance and reality is starting to blur and you can’t help but wonder if he’s been acting this whole time.
He really seems to stop and think about his answer.
“I think so, I think you and I will be more than okay.”
Whatever that means.
You’re starting to get a headache so you decide to focus on his wounds to distract yourself, taking your time to examine his hand properly and then his mouth. The bleeding from his gums seems to have stopped completely which is great news. The corners of his mouth are stained red from residual bleeding overnight but he seems to be doing as good as you can hope for.
“How does everything feel?” You ask as you release your grip on his jaw.
“I… don’t really know, physically I feel a little off, nothing I wouldn’t expect to feel all things considered. Mentally, I’m mostly worried, yesterday was out of place for the usual content he’s had us make. So I have no idea what to expect today, he could regress if he didn’t like it, if he did like it we might see some escalation.”
Hands-on.
That’s the term he used.
“Well-” You start but close your mouth the second you hear the crackle of the intercom.
“Hello, my stars, I am thrilled to see you are more talkative today.” There’s an excited edge to his voice that makes you immediately uneasy. “I continue to be amazed by your performances. Yesterday did not go exactly as I had imagined yet I was still awestruck by some of your choices.”
“We weren’t exactly given much of a choice, were we Peter?” When Spencer speaks up you’re a little surprised by his continued attitude with your captor, especially considering the soft spoken conversation you’ve been having.
“Dr. Reid, you may think me a villain but I have given you everything you have ever wanted. You should be thanking me.”
Even Spencer, who has a response to everything, doesn’t have a response to that.
“Regardless of your rudeness, I have a present for the two of you. Behind the door you will find a delightful surprise, and with it a promise that you won’t have to hear my voice again for quite some time, maybe ever. I have decided our communication may be better across different mediums. And of course you know that if you do not comply you-”
“Will be separated, or shot, or whatever it is you feel like today, got it.” Spencer is quick to find his voice again, what has gotten into him?
He’s a lot of things but he isn’t this. Interrogative, sure. Analytical, always. Brazenly aggressive? Never.
“Oh doctor, you really are in some kind of mood today. That is fine, you are entitled to that mood after the performance you gave us yesterday. What a twist.” The door creaks open and neither of you moves, you aren’t in any rush to see what gift is waiting for you. “I have been thinking, yesterday your performance was… enchanting. I keep asking myself what made it so special and I think I found my answer.” He says every word as though he is the most important person in the world, saying the most important sentence anyone has ever heard. “You two hardly need directing, you just need a motive to perform, and you do positively captivating work. So, for the foreseeable future I will cease all specific requests, let us see what you can do. I think your motivation will become abundantly clear rather fast.” He makes a horrific swallowing sound, as if he’s salivating at just the thought of what’s about to happen. “I want to be dazzled, and I think this is how I get the best show possible from you both.”
“So you aren’t going to be giving us any instruction at all? We’re just supposed to do whatever we want?” It’s your turn to speak, voice cracking as you do because that’s almost worse, at least with specific directions you had plausible deniability for all of this. That all changes if you’re calling the shots.
“No my sweet flower, I still have my expectations. You both have your… habits. Things that I enjoy, and things that I do not. I would like to put an end to some of your less desirable habits, and pave the way for more preferable ones. So no, you will not have free reign, but I also know that with a little slack on the leash you might do some of your best work. Now go, enjoy your gift. You may not hear from me again, but know that I am always watching you, angel.”
For what might be the last time, you hear the click of the intercom. There’s a twisted finality to the sound, followed by the creak of the door opening.
“So we’re supposed to just make up a scene?” You turn to Spencer as he gets to his feet. Watching as he makes his way across the room, when he pulls the door open you see a little pink gift bag on the floor, complete with glittery tissue paper sticking out of the top.
He picks it up apprehensively before bringing it back to you. When he hands it to you it’s heavier than you expected for such a small bag.
“I assume it’s for you.” The bravado he had when speaking with the unsub has fizzled out now that you’re alone again.
You move slowly as you pluck the tissue paper out of the bag. You can’t make out the contents so you flip the bag and dump them out onto the blanket.
And you immediately recognize what it is.
Two collars fall out of the bag, both with a thick chunk of black plastic attached to them with two silver prongs poking out. Accompanied by two little padlocks.
You look up at each other in sync, with the same wide eyes, a silent understanding happens in your shared look.
Here’s the motive to perform.
Neither one of you wants to do this, obviously, but you both take one in your hands regardless. What choice do you have? For seemingly the first time since you arrived in this terrible place, you don’t even bother to think of a way to get out of this. There is a complete acceptance within you that this is simply another thing that you must do.
It isn’t a great feeling, but there’s an odd comfort to it.
You don’t need to think of a way out of this because there isn’t one, there’s nothing you can do about it so why upset yourself over nothing.
Spencer must have come to the same conclusion as you because he picks up one of the collars with a resolute look, wrapping the thick nylon band around his neck. You watch as he carefully positions the prongs against his throat and closes the latch, scooping the lock up and with his fingers he snaps it shut before he loses his nerve. Sealing his fate.
Taking a deep breath he looks at you, almost expectantly.
Okay.
Your turn.
Your hands are trembling as you lay the length of the collar out flat. After a few deep breaths, you wrap it around your throat, feeling the cold, sharp metal of the prongs. Your hands are still shaking like a leaf in the wind as you close the latch, dropping the padlock in the process.
“Here, let me help.” He takes the prongs, adjusting them to a different part of your neck. “We want to avoid the carotid artery.” He murmurs before picking up the lock and clicking it shut, sealing your fate as well.
You stare at each other once more, now with matching accessories.
“So I guess we should just…” God, you don’t want to say it out loud, even if it isn’t something you’re necessarily dreading. But now, with the threat around your throat you don’t have much of a choice.
“Probably, I imagine he isn’t exactly feeling patient now that we have them on.” His eyes roam over your body like he isn’t sure of what to do, as if you haven’t already done this. Finally he leans in, one hand cupping your cheek as he kisses you. He’s so gentle with you, slow and intentional. It feels so natural to be touched by him, like you were meant for this. Maybe this won’t be so bad, if it’s just having sex until the unsub is satisfied you can handle that. When his fingers comb through your hair your entire body seizes.
The two of you both go rigid against each other, it feels like your body is being stabbed with a million frozen needles, an endless icy pain that seeps into your bones. Your spine straightens and you feel like you’re being puppeted as you twitch. After a few agonizing moments you collapse against each other.
“That can’t possibly be a standard shock for a dog collar.” You gasp the words out as he nods.
“We need to try something else.” You look him over as he speaks, the flesh under the prongs is red, you’re sure you have a mark to match. At least it wasn’t enough to leave you with a burn, yet.
“Clearly.” Your head is spinning, you can’t actually be expected to think clearly right now? All you can think about is the possibility of another shock happening at any moment.
“So we try a different approach, do you think he’s just generally looking for rough intercourse or does he want something more blatantly violent? I just don’t think this is actually that efficient of a communication method. We have no-” Spencer’s ramblings are cut off as you both seize up again.
The shock lasts much longer than this time, your jaw clenches tight as you try to breathe. You can feel the electricity running through every inch of you, for a moment you swear your heart skips a beat. That can’t be good.
You don’t know much about the dangers of electric shock. But Spencer does, and he looks terrified.
His expression is enough to make you throw yourself at him the second you have control of your body again. Knocking him backwards onto the floor.
“No more talking.” You mumble against his mouth as you bite his bottom lip. You don’t know what you need to do to make the shocks stop but talking about it certainly isn’t going to help.
There’s a moment of hesitation from him and you just know he’s fighting the urge to ask if this is okay. That’s the last thing you need right now, stopping to ask if you're alright with this will undoubtedly end with another shock.
“Come on.” You murmur, taking his hand and guiding it between your legs.
Thank god that seems to be permission enough for him as he slips his hands past your waist band, any shame you felt a few short days ago has long since gone out the window. Based on the way he whimpers when his fingers press against your folds you’re certain he’s in the same boat.
Gone is a sense of shame between the two of you, if this is your normal you might as well enjoy it.
“Just do what you want to do, it’ll be better for both of us.” You press your forehead to his, gently rocking yourself against his hand. After everything you’ve been through at this point it’s hard to believe his fingers are still hesitantly hovering above your entrance.
You can practically hear his internal monologue in your own head.
Prior consent doesn’t count as consent in future situations. Especially when you’re being coerced by electric shock, We’ll do whatever you’re most comfortable with, even if it means getting shocked until our hearts simultaneously explode.
His erection is actively poking your hip right now and he’s still looking at you like he’s waiting for the okay.
The collar might not not be motivating enough for him but it certainly is for you, you know exactly what the unsub wants to see.
He wants to see all the things you want to do to the man staring up at you slackjawed right now.
You bring your hand up to his face, squeezing his jaw, you force his mouth open wider, staring in his eyes as you spit into his mouth. You raise your eyebrows at him, daring him to react as his eyes manage to go even wider.
Self proclaimed germaphobe Dr. Reid looks at you, and swallows.
You really are the exception to his rules.
Finally he swipes two fingers against your clit, being electrocuted might have left you feeling tense and paranoid but his touch has all of that melting away.
Thank fucking god.
His fingers slide across the length of your cunt, he hums when he feels the wetness pooling at your entrance. He never pushes into you, only teases your hole until you’re keening against him.
Hovering on all fours above him you’re sure you’re a sight, panting like a dog for more.
Your noises only serve to egg him on. Using your wetness as a lubricant he focuses on your clit. You squeeze your eyes shut, almost instinctually rocking back and forth against the heel of his palm. He doesn’t seem to be in any rush, rubbing lazy circles against you until your legs shake so bad you’re worried you’ll crumble and fall down on top of him.
“Can I get on top now?” The sound of his voice makes your eyes snap open as you nod eagerly. Holding onto your hips he flips you over so your positions are reversed. You lean back, waiting patiently for his hand to return to your cunt. When he doesn’t you whine.
You’re rewarded with his fingers looping around the sides of your panties, yanking them down until you're bare before him.
“Open your mouth.” His tone isn’t demanding, more like a plea.
So you do just that, and when you meet his eyes you hardly even see Spencer anymore.
Gone is the sweet boy you share a desk with, he has been replaced by something hungry and tragic.
He’s just like you now.
Sick.
He leans down until your lips are almost touching, he isn’t as confident as you were but he still spits into your mouth without hesitation. Pulling back to watch. When swallowing his breath hitches. His fingers pull on the hem of your camisole, pulling it up until it’s over your arms and your head.
He takes a moment to just stare at your chest in a way that would usually make you cover yourself up. Instead you just let him. Squeaking in surprise when he leans down and sucks one of your nipples into his mouth, making obscene sounds in the process. His tongue swirls around it for a moment before he starts dragging his tongue back and forth, letting his teeth lightly graze against the sensitive bud, never actually biting down. Alternating between sucking and lapping at your nipple until it stiffens into a peak. When he’s satisfied he switches to your other breast, repeating the process. When he pulls away to admire his work your nipples are swollen and both of your tits are slick with spit.
The sight is enough to make him bite his lip in a weak attempt to stifle a whine.
You’ve all but forgotten about the collar around your neck as he starts to bend your knees up towards your stomach. You're caught off guard when he keeps pushing until your legs are pointed straight up with your feet over his shoulders. Turning his head he kisses your ankle before gently biting the skin there. You’re positioned in a way that his clothed cock rubs against your core, your eyes nearly roll into the back of your head. Just when you think he’s about to pull his boxers down he stops.
He opens his mouth and you just know his dumb ass is about to ask if you’re okay with this, so you kick the side of his head and glare at him as his mouth snaps closed. He nods, at least the part of his brain that uses his critical thinking skills still works.
You both know the unsub doesn’t like when he asks you for consent, you don’t know or honestly care why. He can ask you if you’re okay a hundred times a day when you get out of here.
There’s another moment's pause from him, and if looks could kill your glare would put him six feet under.
“For gods sake, Spence, just fuck me.” You hope you don’t sound too mean but he doesn't seem bothered, quite the opposite.
He doesn’t need to be told twice.
You feel a rush of relief when he kicks his boxers off, his cock stands at attention, the poor neglected thing is already leaking, leaving his tip shiny and slick.
He wraps his arms around your legs, holding you like a vice as he lines himself up and slides into the heat of your cunt.
It stings just as much as it did the first time but you revel in it this time. Who cares about a little pain anymore? You just squeeze your eyes shut and groan. He likely doesn’t even hear the edge to your groans over his own breathy moans.
He doesn’t give you as much of an adjustment period this time either, his hips are already rocking back and forth. Whether it’s for fear of being shocked or simply because he can’t help himself is unclear.
He holds your legs firmly in place, ankles thrown over his shoulders as he pistons in and out of you. Both of you are reduced to whimpering messes in a matter of minutes as you feel the all too familiar tightening of the knot in your stomach.
Boy genius can’t be far behind you based on the sporadic nature of his thrusts. You’d say that happened fast but you’re in no position to judge, not when your breath is catching in your throat with every thrust. He knows your body surprisingly well because you can tell he’s holding out for your orgasm before his. His quick, sloppy thrusts become focused. Shallow, just the right way to slide against that sweet spot before slamming into your cervix until the knot snaps.
You clamp down on him, the force of which draws a string of whimpers past his lips as he scrambles to pull out, coming on your stomach. You watch the way his jaw tightens, and his cock twitches, admiring the sight before you lean back. Taking a few deep breaths as you try and collect yourself. He slumps over next to you, in a similar state.
He plants a kiss on your shoulder before pressing his forehead against yours.
Your eyes are starting to flutter shut when your back arches. A strangled cry leaving your throat as you feel a quick shock is delivered to your body. Spencer spasms onto you, his fingers twist around his collar, pulling uselessly.
It’s a mercifully short burst of electricity this time but still enough to make you sit up straight.
“What did we do wrong?” Your voice is hoarse.
He looks troubled, more troubled than you’d expect, even after all that.
“I-I’m not sure, I guess we just have to try again.” So rare is it to hear Dr. Spencer Reid sound unsure.
“Okay, fuck, okay.” You’re trying to think back over everything you just did. He didn’t shock you the entire scene until the end so he clearly didn’t have a problem with the contents of the scene. You’re a mess of scrambling limbs as you both smash your lips together once more in an attempt to avoid any form of reprimand. “Let’s try something else.” You grumble against his lips.
You’re racking your brain for ideas, clearly he’s doing the same but it’s edged with a panic. If you choose the wrong thing you risk another shock. How much would it take to stop your heart?
Focus.
He didn’t like what you just did, okay, do something else. Do something different.
Does he want more talking or less?
More participation on your part, less on Spencer’s?
Rougher?
Meaner?
Without the unsubs direct commands Spencer isn’t as sexually dominant as he originally had to be, maybe the unsub wants that dynamic to be included in every scene.
You can do that.
Happily.
First things first, you need him to be as naked as you are.
You climb into his lap, straddling him as you push him back so that he’s laying back once more. Yanking on the hem of his shirt until you’re able to pull it off of him, tossing it aside you drag your hands up and down his torso.
God he’s pretty.
Somehow even prettier with a collar around his neck.
Don’t think like that.
Grinding down against him you can feel his cock already swelling again.
“You get hard so easily.” You grab his jaw, noticing his stubble for the first time. How long have you been here?
“I thought you said no talking.”
“Well that didn’t work out so well, I’m trying something different. Do you not like it?”
The dumb look on his face makes you forget about the collar for a moment, it makes you forget about the room you're in, and it makes you forget all about Peter Hill. All you can think about are ways to make him keep making that face.
“This is fine.” He mumbles.
“You do all the work every time Spencer, you must be tired by now.”
“I don’t mind.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” He really does sound tired. Maybe not from this exactly, but in general.
“Maybe you could let me take care of you this time?” You tuck a strand of hair away from his face as he continues to nod.
Assuming that the unsub might see Spencer as a surrogate for himself this would be a wise course of action. Seeing you as the dominant, more active, participant might be exactly what he wants. Maybe the reason you were shocked was because he could see how hesitant Spencer was, maybe he just needs to see one of you taking the lead.
That’s the only reason you’re doing this.
Certainly not seizing an opportunity.
Your panties have long since been discarded so it’s relatively easy to reach back and grab his cock, lining him up with your entrance as you sink down onto him. You’re typically concentrating and rolling your eyes into the back of your head when he first enters you, but right now you get a perfect view of his face.
Mouth open in an ‘O’ as his eyes flutter shut, a pornagraphic moan slipping past his lips. This is already so much better.
Once you’re fully seated on his cock you fight the urge to grind against him, instead you just watch his face, the way his features twist and contort in pleasure.
“Do you like it when I spit in your mouth?” You do your best to keep your tone sultry, more condescending than actually caring about the response.
You’re met with a frantic nod and you nearly lose your resolve when he opens his mouth.
This is better than any romance book, sexy movie, or porno you’ve ever seen.
You want to take a picture, since that isn’t an option right now you settle for burning the mental image into your brain before you give him exactly what he wants. You hover over him, letting a line of spit fall from your mouth to his. His cock twitches inside of you simultaneously. You don’t dare take your eyes off of him as he swallows again.
So fucking good.
He’s too good. Maybe this is what you should have been doing all along. He never needed to be in charge, this is a million times better than any show you’ve put on. If Peter wanted a star he’s got one right here. Licking his perfect pretty lips.
Batting his eyelashes at you like his cock isn’t lodged in your stomach.
“I wonder what else you like?” You don’t even say it for the camera, that was forgotten the second he opened his mouth and presented his tongue to you.
He doesn’t have a response, just that pretty, dumb look. Is this what it’s like for him? Watching you come apart so easily, you completely understand his ridiculous torture metaphors now, this is fucking torture in the sweetest way humanely possible.
You don’t know what possesses you to do it but you tentatively at first, you wrap your fingers around his throat, careful to avoid the bulky part of the collar. It’s a move made mostly for show. But when you’re met with a frantic, impatient, nod, you squeeze.
His hips rock upwards immediately, fucking into you, instinctively your grip tightens around his throat as if you can steady yourself. It only makes him buck into you harder. He splays his hands out across the tops of your thighs, nails digging into your flesh, leaving a trail of crescent marks in his wake.
The room fills with the sounds of curses as you let your head fall backwards, so much for doing the work, Spencer’s doing most of the work as he continues to fuck up into you. You briefly let your hand slip off his neck, his hand catches your wrist, holding you against his throat as you wrap your fingers back around it.
“Fucking- shit, oh my god.” His brows furrow together as he whines, you’ve never heard him curse so much before.
He angles his hips off the floor, grinding the base of his pelvis against your clit until you’re seeing stars. You’re definitely squeezing too hard but he won’t let your wrist go and your body is too tense from the pressure building in your stomach. Based on the sounds he’s making you’re sure he doesn’t care, his eyes are basically rolled into the back of his head at this point anyway.
“So fucking good, Spence, oh my fucking-” Your voice trails off into a moan as rolls his hips up against you just so. The goal was to focus on him but he seems hell bent on making you come, so much so that he doesn’t even bother thrusting into you. He just keeps angling his hips against yours in any way he can to put pressure on your clit. And you reward his efforts every time by tightening your grip.
Once again your orgasm hits first, before you’re ready for it and before you’ve recovered from your first orgasm. He forces it out of you. And in return you brand your handprint across the front of his throat. Your vision is blurring white as you cry out. Your chest heaves as you gasp, fighting, keeping your eyes open as you stare down at your pretty boy.
His cheeks are bright red as he sucks in a breath, you’re about to start riding him in earnest, it’s the least you can do. But before you can he grabs the back of your head, forcing your lips onto his as his tongue presses against yours. You start to groan his name but he swallows the sound when he sucks your tongue into his mouth. Just like that with a stutter of his hips you feel his cock jerk inside of you as he comes, spilling out around the base of his shaft as he makes a mess out of both of you.
The corners of his eyes are damp when you look at him, you can’t help but kiss him there, moving to his cheek, and then his forehead. You both stay silent, a palpable tension replaces the lust in your cloudy mess of a brain as you wait to see if it was enough. The energy in the room shifted completely.
You can’t imagine a world in which that wasn’t adequate.
Yet somehow, it wasn’t.
You fall forward, letting your forehead rest on the cold cement as you feel the burning against your neck. From your throat down to your fingertips, you can feel the white hot fire burning you from the inside out. It lasts long, too long. It feels like the prongs are boring holes straight through your throat and out the other side.
When it finally relents Spencer's fingers are pulling on your collar.
“What’s wrong?” You mumble, your visions a bit blurry as you struggle to sit up.
“I need to adjust the prongs, we’ve got burns now and we don’t want to keep hitting the same spot or it could become necrotic.” You don’t really comprehend what he’s saying but you sit still so he can do whatever it is he’s insisting on. “Okay, now can you do mine?” He tilts his chin up as he nods and you adjust his collar as well.
The sight of his burn snaps you out of your stupor.
A gnarly red and white blister has formed under the prongs, it hurts just to look at but the sting on your own neck reminds you that you have one to match.
The smell of burnt flesh floats in the air around you.
Once you’ve adjusted his collar as he instructs he leans in and kisses you, pushing you back until you’re the one laying down this time. When he starts to pepper kisses down your chest and stomach until he’s between your legs you squeeze your thighs together. You cannot deal with another orgasm right now.
“No.” You’re firm as he gives you those ridiculous puppy dog eyes.
Good luck saying no to that look.
“I’m serious Spencer, no. Get back up here and stick your dick in me so we can give this another try.” You’re fried. Mentally, physically, literally.
“Just you this time, sweetheart.” You groan as he kisses your inner thigh. Your hands tangle in his mess of hair, pulling too hard, even though it doesn’t seem to affect him. “I can’t go again, I need a minute. For someone my age the average refractory period is between thirty minutes to an hour and considering I've already gone twice in a row I’m gonna need a moment before I’m ready to go again. Since you are someone assigned female at birth you don’t have a physiological refractory period so by process of elimination this is what we have to do.”
All you can do is glare at him.
“I don’t know exactly what counts as a scene but I’m pretty sure it’s an orgasm. And it can’t be mine.”
“Spencer.”
“Look, I think I figured out what we have to do, just let me test my theory.”
He buries his face in the crease of your thigh, dragging his tongue across your skin.
“Well at least tell me!”
“You aren’t going to like the answer.” He mumbles into the meat of your thigh as he sucks a mark into the skin before turning towards his main target. “I’ll try to get this done as fast as possible.”
Your poor overstimulated clit is where he settles his mouth. Flattening his tongue against you as tries his damndest to get you there.
And god it feels good.
He worships your cunt, his tongue writes prayers against you as it darts back and forth. You see god everytime he jams his tongue into you, as if he can effectively fuck you with it.
It feels so good.
But you’re too scattered. The last shock was different, demanding. And it’s left you genuinely afraid. You’re too on edge to come right now. Your body is tense in all the wrong spaces and even with his face buried between your legs all you can think about is the burn mark on both of your necks.
“I- I can’t Spence.” It’s too much, too much of a good thing, especially when you aren’t any closer to an orgasm.
“That’s just not true, you’ve done it before you can do it again.” He’s out of breath as he rests his head on your thigh.
You whine, kicking your leg weakly in an attempt to knock him away from you.
“Get on top.” If that’s his solution he clearly isn’t listening to you.
“What?”
“Sit on my face.” He says it like it’s the answer to all of your problems but you can’t imagine more stimulation is going to be the answer when your entire body is on edge.
“Spencer…”
“Please?” He whines, sounding like he might honest to god cry if you deny him this. “It’ll be better for you I promise.” He says it like his dick isn’t starting to harden just at the thought. Unfortunately you need him hard for what you’re sure will be round four when this inevitably doesn’t work. Until you figure out what Peter wants you need to prepare yourself for a long day.
What if this is what he wants?
What if he just wants you to fuck each other until you pass out? Until your body simply can’t handle it anymore.
You don’t get long to dwell on the thought because Spencer’s laying down beside you.
“Sit on my face, now. Or he’s gonna shock us again.” You’re getting tired and it honestly isn’t worth the fight. Especially when he’s staring at you so eagerly.
“Fine.” You grumble as you sit up on your knees, throwing your leg over his head so you’re kneeling above him
“Just relax, I’ll do everything, okay?” It’s remarkable that he can sound so sure considering the circumstances.
You aren’t sure if you can relax in this position.
Your knees shake, and you struggle to hold yourself up above him. You just want to lay down but he wraps his arms around the backs of your thighs. In one swift motion he yanks you down so you’re sat in earnest on his face.
“Jesus, Spencer.” You lean forward, tangling your fingers in his hair to steady yourself. Scraping your nails against his scalp in the process.
You’d feel worse about how you might be hurting him if he wasn’t already moaning into your cunt, the vibrations only serve to tighten your grip on his hair.
He isn’t as focused, instead he alternates between your clit and your now dripping hole. When his tongue is on your clit it feels like you’re being forced to sit on a vibrator. He darts his tongue back and forth against you, occasionally twisting his head to the side so he can breathe. Whenever that happens you’re rewarded with the stubble on his cheeks and chin against your sensitive nub. You can’t decide if it feels good or bad at this point. He pokes his tongue against the rim of your fluttering hole and you're in an even worse position. You’re dealing with the sensation of that combined with the bridge of his nose knocking against your clit.
You hate that he was right, this is working.
You don’t have any choice other than to let it work because his arms are wrapped so tightly around your thighs you couldn’t lift off of him if you tried. Not that you would, you’re riding that precarious line between discomfort and pleasure now that makes this so much more bearable then you’d expected.
If you had the capacity for embarrassment right now you’d be horrified by the wet sucking noises he’s making, instead you let your head fall backwards as he forces you closer and closer to your breaking point. The tightening in your stomach is inherently different than it usually feels, the muscles in your face twitch as you focus and chase that sensation.
Almost uncontrollably, your cunt flutters around nothing and you feel a gush between your legs, Spencer doesn’t let up for a second as you come.
“Oh my fucking god.” You straighten your knees as you manage to pry his tongue off of your clit. You’re gonna have a permanent crease between your eyebrows after this, your face has been scrunched up so long. “Spencer stop-” You roll off of him, laying flat on your back beside him, the blankets are soaked.
You’re gasping for air as you wait for the next shock. But Spencer clearly has other plans as he sits up next to you, shoving your legs apart once more, one of his hands pushes your thigh up towards your stomach.
“We can't stop, we have to go again.” The bottom half of his face is shiny and slick.
When he slides his fingers against your swollen clit you shove him away.
“No- I’m done. I need a break, just a few minutes.” You feel like you might cry.
“We don’t have a few minutes, we need to do this right now. Then you can take as long of a break as you want.” He sounds so sure.
“Promise?”
“I promise, please, just trust me.”
Frantic and jittery, he strokes himself. His free hand slotting back between your legs, much gentler this time.
“You don’t even need to do anything, just lay here and I’ll take care of it. Promise, I promise.” He mumbles, careful not to use too much pressure as you continue to fight the urge to shove him away.
Any precision he usually has is gone completely by now, replaced by sloppy circles against your clit as he jerks himself off. When you whine at the friction he spits into his hand before returning to your clit. He holds his other hand out in front of your chin, wanting the same for himself. You spit onto his palm, earning yourself an breathy groan as he uses it to properly fuck his hand.
It becomes abundantly clear that he isn’t trying to make you come again, if anything he’s simply touching you for his own gratification. And you’re thankful for it, if only one of you needs to have an orgasm to count as a scene you’re happy to sit this one out. Your clit buzzes, hypersensitive to every uncontrolled stroke against it. He whimpers as he ruts against his hand, hips stuttering as he makes a sound between pain and ecstasy.
His eyes squeeze shut as a filthy whine leaves his lips, forehead slick with sweat as his head falls backwards. You can see the veins in his neck straining as he has what you're sure is a rather uncomfortable orgasm, spurts of come are added to the mess between your legs.
Neither one of you dares to move. You’re waiting, convinced you’re about to be shocked at any moment.
But you aren’t.
Spencer was right, thank god.
He collapses beside you and the room fills with the sounds of your haggard breathing.
“How did you know that would work?” You finally break the silence, still struggling to catch your breath as he rolls over onto his side to face you.
“I didn’t, it was a lucky guess.”
You sit straight up, looking offended.
“You promised.” You try not to sound shrill, since he did technically fulfil his end of the deal.
“I know, I’m sorry.” You can’t stay mad at that sheepish half smile. How is he still managing a smile after everything you’ve been through?
“I mean, I guess it’s fine since you didn’t technically break your promise. How did you figure it out?” You lay back down on your side so you’re face to face.
“The collars are meant to be used for ‘fixing bad habits.’ I eventually realized that that meant training.”
“Training?”
“Like training a dog.” He grimaces. “When we do something wrong we’re shocked, when we do something right we aren’t. What he’s essentially doing is training us to do what he wants unprompted.”
“So that he doesn’t even have to ask.”
“Exactly, I have to assume that the goal would be that eventually we would be having sex the majority of the time. He said he isn’t going to speak to us anymore so it’s safe to assume he plans on using the collars as his only communication.”
“How much would it take to kill us?” Your voice shrinks as you ask the question that’s been picking away at the back of your mind.
“Electricity? It’s hard to say. It’s less about the voltage and more about the current, any amount of voltage to a human heart could be fatal. But the human body has an inherent resistance to electrical current. It’s a really tricky concept because without sufficient voltage the current would be unable to travel through the body regardless. The closest thing to an answer that I can give you is that nine volts with enough current would typically be considered enough to deliver a lethal shock.” His hands start to move in that familiar way they do when he’s lost in an explanation.
“How much do you think our collars emit?”
He hesitates before he speaks again.
“The average dog collar emits three to nine volts with a low current but it’s safe to assume that based on the feeling of the shock, and how it courses through our entire bodies, that he has modified them to have a stronger current.”
“So it could kill us.”
“Yes, it’s possible.”
“So we should do everything in our power to not risk another shock.”
“Yes, that would be wise.”
“So we let him… train us?”
“I don’t think we have much of a choice in the matter.”
There isn’t much more you can say about that. What other options are there? That’s the question you’ve been asking yourself since you were taken. What else could you possibly do?
“What happens when we’re trained?”
“I think we just have to hope it doesn’t get to that point.”
You know the answer, he does too. If it works then you both become obedient pets, fucking each others brains out non stop until your hearts stop.
“So from now on when we wake up we should just have sex until we’re sure he’s satisfied?”
“I guess.”
★
The next morning when the lights come on you do just that.
You wake up to sloppy kisses, rolling over almost instinctually onto your belly as he tugs your panties down. You lay prone as he kisses down the length of your spine before sucking a mark into the skin. And another, and another, and another. You bury your face in your pillow, letting out a series of low moans. His knee spreads your legs as he slots himself between your thighs.
And you’re happy to let him.
He comes buried in your pussy, but not before his arm twisted around to the front of you and ripped an orgasm from you.
“Should we go again?” You turned to whisper, worry biting at the edges of your voice.
His hands on your hips guide you on top of him, once you’re straddling him he pulls you into a lazy kiss.
“I don’t know if I can right now.” He murmurs, almost cracking a smile. “Besides, I don’t think it’s about doing it multiple times, it’s about doing it unprompted."
“Okay, we can just do this then.” You wrap your lips around his bottom lip, lightly sucking.
It’s easy to get distracted by him, everything about him is distracting. But you’ve had an idea on your mind for sometime and you need to find a way to bring it up without drawing attention to it.
“Do you remember when Tobias Hankle saved your life?” He stiffens up a bit at the name but he nods.
“I couldn’t forget it if I tried.”
“Why do you think he did it?”
“He wasn’t a bad person, he was just a person in a bad situation, he never had a chance to be anything else. He was a victim of his circumstances.”
“I wonder if we could be saved the same way.” You murmur it against his jaw, hoping it’s loud enough to be heard and quiet enough to not be picked up by a microphone.
“I don’t think that would save me, not this time.” He picks up on what you mean immediately, his fingers comb through your hair as you kiss his cheek. You brush your lips against his stubble.
“It might save me.”
He flips you both so he’s on top, where his lips can’t be read by anyone looking down from above.
“It hurts.” His lips connect to your throat, kissing across the line of bruises. “You would have to stay completely silent and still.”
“I can handle it.”
“And if it doesn’t work?”
“Then we do this.” Your hand trails down his body until you can palm him through his boxers, a small part of you is pleased to find he’s already hard. “We do this forever, until we’re old and grey.” He moves up your jaw, biting your earlobe before breathing his words out against you.
“I could seriously hurt you.”
“Then do it right, put those three PHD’s to work. Do it hard enough to prove that it’s real, and soft enough that you don’t break anything.”
“That’s a really dangerous line to ride.”
“We won’t get another chance. Make it real.” It’s the last thing you say to him before you go back to kissing him in earnest.
Turns out he can go again.

How many days has it been?
It can’t have been more than a week since you were taken, you’re sure of it.
Without the daily presence of the unsubs voice everything starts to blend together. Wake up, have sex, stare longingly at each other as you talk about nothing in particular until you either have more sex or are shocked into doing so.
Out of habit, you start crawling on top of him before you’re even fully awake every morning.
Just like the unsub wants.
Just like you want.
That line starts to get blurry and the thought scares you, so you choose to ignore the nasty little voice in your head.
After another long day you curl up against him, grateful for the dim lighting the evenings provide for you.
“Do you think he’s won?” You whisper into the darkness, you’re certain the unsub must be asleep at this point, you’ve been awake so long. He has to sleep eventually.
“What do you mean? I’m sure the team is still looking for us.” He holds your face in one of his hands, an action that is starting to feel familiar to you.
“Yeah, but look at us.” You motion at yourself dramatically. “He did it, we’re just animals now, doing whatever he wants and now we… we enjoy it, all we do is have sex. He won.” You notably haven’t been shocked in some time.
“I don’t think that’s how we should view it.”
“How else are we supposed to look at it then?”
“We… take comfort in each other, despite the things he makes us do, we still-” He stops abruptly, swallowing loudly before continuing. “We still care for each other, that means we’re still human.”
“He doesn’t even have to tell us what to do anymore, Spencer. We just do it.” Your voice cracks, this whole situation has made you insufferably emotional.
“I think you’re being too hard on yourself.” His thumb traces little shapes against your cheek.
“How much of this is real?” You hate how needy you sound.
“All of it’s real. All of this has happened and is continuing to happen.” He tilts your head up, forcing you to look at him.
“You know what I mean, Spence.”
“I don’t know what you want me to say.” He looks at you like he feels bad for you and you hate it.
“Why didn’t this happen organically? Why did it have to happen here, where it was forced?” The words are clunky as they force themselves out of your mouth.
“I think it would have happened organically, eventually. I can’t count the amount of times I almost asked you out.”
“Then why didn’t you? I would have said yes.”
“I realize that now but I just couldn’t be sure.” How the fuck could he be unsure? He’s the most intelligent man you’ve ever met and you certainly weren’t subtle.
“I was obsessed with you.”
“You were nice to everyone.”
“I was extra nice to you.”
“You never realized that I liked you either.” He scoffs.
“Yeah, but I’m not a genius.” You poke him gently in the chest and he cracks a small smile.
“We could still do that, go out. When we get out of here.”
Could you?
It’s hard to imagine a world where you sit across from him in a restaurant after all of this.
Before this? Sure, you spent plenty of nights imagining it. You would style your hair down, and wear mascara. And you’d wear one of your dresses, something he’d never seen before that showed off your shoulders and legs. He never got to see that at work, you wanted to wow him.
Now he’s seen it all, and he seems pretty pleased with it but you aren’t exactly fantasizing about a little italian restaurant with him these days. Not when you know what awaits you after dessert.
Could you sit across from him, eating complimentary bread out of a basket, talking about the weather? Your relationship seems to be pretty far beyond that at this point.
“Maybe.” You murmur.
“Maybe?” His voice hitches up as he cocks an eyebrow at you. “If you turn me down for a date after all of this I’m quitting my job and moving as far away from Virginia as possible.”
“I’m not saying that- I’m just saying… I don’t know. Can you really see us going back to normal after this? Just acting like this never happened, we start dating and- and what? We hold hands everywhere, we go out to dinner, go to the movies, we act like a normal couple? I just don’t think we’re a normal couple, Spence.”
“We don’t have to be a normal couple, I don’t want to be a normal couple. We can be a couple that gets takeout and only watches movies at home because we’re scared to go outside. We can be disgusting with our public displays of affection, just to show everyone that they could never understand the devotion we share. Instead of dates we can stay in bed and I’ll show you every night just how much I want to be with you, I don’t care. We can do whatever you want to do, as long as it’s done together.” He sounds like he’s already made the decision for you and honestly, you’re glad. He makes it sound so easy.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. I mean it, whatever you want.” He plants a kiss between your brows before resting his chin on the top of your head. “That also means that if we get out of here and you want nothing to do with me I’ll respect that choice.”
“You’re an idiot.” The absurdity of the idea makes you laugh.
“You have that effect on me.”
There’s a beat of silence where you simply enjoy the feeling of his arms around you before you bring up the question that’s been quietly building up in the back of your mind.
“Do you think it’s possible I’m pregnant?” You don’t feel too different but you have to ask. With the amount of unprotected intercourse you’re having it’s entirely possible. Spencer only pulls out half the time, it doesn’t seem like something he’s even concerned with. Yet when you look at him now he looks pale.
“I- I hadn’t even thought about that. I guess I just assumed we’d be out of here by now, I hadn’t considered the possibility.” So rarely does he sound as unsure as he does right now.
“What do we do if I am?”
“We… handle it. We can handle it.”
No you can’t.
Not when there’s no end in sight. Imagining giving birth in this tiny room with only Spencer to help you makes your blood run cold.
“Maybe we should handle it before it becomes a problem.”
By putting your plan into motion and getting the hell out of here.
What other choice do you have? You’ve all but given up on the team at this point, and you know he has too. Even if neither one of you wants to say it.
“If you’re ready for that.” You can tell purely based on his wary tone that he knows exactly what you mean.
“I’m ready.” You hope he is too. You’re only gonna get one shot at this, and if you fail there might not ever be another chance at getting out of here.
★
This is it.
Hopefully you’re as good of an actress as the unsub seems to think you are.
Okay.
You’re dead.
Your heart stopped, probably from all the electric shocks, it makes perfect sense.
You aren’t sure if Spencer’s awake yet, but you can’t check. You try to recall the original videos you watched on the jet of the victims. You don’t remember the quality being that good, there were multiple angles but they were all grainy. Hopefully the quality is poor enough that they can’t pick up the tiny movements of your chest as you try to stay completely still.
After what feels like hours Spencer finally sits up beside you, mumbling a greeting to you before going quiet. He whispers your name, when you don’t respond he shakes your shoulders before repeating your name louder.
“Sweetheart, wake up.” You’re doing everything in your power to keep your breaths shallow, keeping your chest as still as possible. “Come on, time to get up.” You aren’t the only one putting on a show, the panicked lilt of his voice is exactly what you asked for. Dejected and frightened.
His fingers slide under your collar, pressing against your pulse point. You know he feels the beat of your heart but the hitch of his breath says otherwise.
“No, no no no.” His voice is barely a whisper as he presses his ear to your chest.
You’re both caught off guard when a shock is delivered to both of you. You grit your teeth immediately, it takes every ounce of strength you have left to not react. You let your body twitch, keeping your face free of any reaction to the best of your ability. It’s a full ten seconds of electricity through your veins, when it finally stops you fight the urge to take a deep breath, instead returning to your brief little inhales and exhales.
You don’t dare to open your eyes but you can hear Spencer struggling to get back up. Your entire body feels fried and you’re almost thankful for the excuse to stay laying down.
You can hear him sniffling, his hands are on you, locked together over the center of your chest.
Just like when Tobias Hankel saved him.
You brace yourself as he begins chest compressions, a steady rhythm against you. It’s exactly as you’ve been trained, hard and consistent, when performing CPR you should be pushing in at least two inches. He’s certainly doing that, you want to wince in pain but manage to resist when he stops, carefully opening your mouth with a hand on your chin before locking his lips to yours. He pinches your nose shut, when he blows the air you’re eternally grateful when he breaks the seal between your lips and lets the air escape instead of forcing it into your lungs.
You make sure to let your chest rise regardless.
After one exaggerated breath he sits back up and returns to the compressions, his own breathing is shaky and you can hear him gasping, scared little sounds. You count each agonizing slam against your chest, a small whimper escapes your throat when you feel a sharp pain in your ribs. He doesn’t relent, when he hits thirty on the dot his mouth is back on yours, your cheeks are wet this time when he pulls back, when he returns to the chest compressions each one sends a jolt of pain directly to your ribcage.
“Come on, please, please, just wake up.” His voice trembles and it’s clear now that he’s crying. “Please I can’t do this without you, I can’t do anything without you, please, wake up for me, please sweetheart.” He’s a rambling mess, his voice a strained whine.
You aren’t the only one acting like your life depends on it.
There’s no more shocks, and no voice over the intercom. Just the two of you putting on the performance of a lifetime, praying that this works.
With each push you feel the pain in your ribs grow sharper and more focused on the left side of your body.
You don’t know how many rounds of compressions you do, eventually you go numb, you briefly wonder if you’re actually dying as Spencer sobs over your body. Maybe you really did die, and these are your last moments in your body.
Eventually he stops. His body folds forward, his forehead resting over your heart.
“I’m so sorry, I should have kept you safe, I should have protected you.” His body trembles against you as he scoops you up holding your limp body in his arms.
When do you call it quits on this?
You don’t have a plan for if this doesn’t work, do you just sit up and act like everything’s fine?
“Just wake up, please, I love you.” His voice is so soft and vulnerable.
That almost makes you open your eyes.
Instead you stiffen up at the sound of the door creaking open. You don’t dare move now, not when you’ve already come this far.
You can feel Spencer's body go rigid against yours as foot steps cross the room.
“I- I never wanted her to get hurt. I never meant for this to happen.” You recognize the voice as Peters immediately, even without the crackling robotic tone of the intercom. “Oh god…” You can’t help but finally open your eyes to stare at him.
He’s so… ordinary.
Mid to late thirties, white, balding, polo shirt and khakis. He’s crying, his head is in his hands as he whimpers. You don’t get a good look at his face before Spencer is on him.
You’ve seen Spencer in the field before, this is nothing like that.
Any of the calculated, deliberate restraint he usually exhibits goes out the window as his hands grip his shirt collar, his fist slams into the side of his head. Peter stumbles, falling onto his back, staring up with a look of horror as Spencer kneels over him.
You watch, frozen as his fist connects to your captors face.
Again, and again, and again, and again.
You watch as his face goes from a terrified expression to a smashed mess of flesh and teeth. He struggles for a little while, weakly clawing at Spencer's chest, but it does nothing to deter him.
At one point Peter looks at you, both eyes so swollen they’re barely visible. You hear his garbled voice.
“Please.”
Spencer grabs him by the jaw, forcing him to look back towards him. You think back to something he said.
“He doesn’t get to touch you, he doesn’t get to talk to you, he doesn’t get to breathe your air.”
He really meant it.
All for you.
He remains deadly quiet as he slams his fist into him until he stops twitching beneath him. His knuckles are split, but it’s nothing compared to Peter's face. He doesn’t even look like he used to be a person.
Just a lump of gore with teeth.
Because he loves you.
There’s a moment of silence where Spencer’s chest heaves as he struggles to catch his breath, your own heart racing as you stare at him, sitting up and clutching your ribs. Eventually his fingers wander down and into the pockets of what remains of Peter Hill. Tossing his wallet to the side before carefully setting a cell phone beside the corpse.
Finally he turns, a splatter of viscera coats his face and torso.
And you know all he can see on your face is the hunger behind your gaze.
He has the same look in his eyes.
Pupils blown, encompassing the rest of his iris.
No amount of therapy is ever going to fix you after this.
“You did it.” You whisper as he sits up, crawling over to you as he holds your face in his blood smeared hands.
“It was all you, you did so well.” He kisses your cheek as he tucks your hair behind your ears.
The logical thing to say right now would be ‘let’s get out of here.’ The logical thing to do right now would be to run out the now open door and scream until someone, anyone, comes to help you. Instead you turn your head towards his hand and kiss his palm.
“Tell me that you meant it.” You whisper.
“Every word.”
You slide your hand up and across his chest, making your intentions pretty clear as you lean forward to catch his lips in a kiss. Gentle and sweet to start, eventually becoming something with more fire behind it. He’s the one to pull away first.
“You’re hurt.” His hand traces over the back of yours, leaving a slick trail of red.
“It isn’t too bad. I promise.”
“Are you absolutely sure?” He lifts your top to examine your ribs, you doubt anything's broken.
It’s probably just a fracture.
Probably.
It isn’t important right now, nothing is as important as the look in his eyes.
“Say it again.” You pull your shirt down, lifting his chin so he focuses on your face instead of your potentially broken bones.
He knows what you want, he always knows what you want.
“I love you.”
“Again.” You mumble, unable to take your eyes off of him.
“I love you.”
And you know it isn’t for the cameras, it isn’t fearing punishment, it isn’t to keep you safe.
He says it for you, just for you.
You grab the collar of his now stained shirt and smash your lips against his. He devours you, all consuming and possessive with every lap of his tongue and every nip of his teeth. His hand is sliding up your leg, you don’t bother being as subtle as you shove your hand down the front of his boxers, you’ve never been as pleased as you are right now to find that he’s already hard. He groans into your mouth and you happily swallow every one. When his fingers graze against your inner thigh you gasp, the sharp intake of breath makes you wince as you yelp. The pain in your rips taking all of your focus as well as his. He immediately pulls away from you.
“Hospital first, everything else later.” His tone is firm and you know it’s a command for himself as well as you.
You whine for a moment but when the stabbing pain in your ribs continues you give it up, letting him help you to your feet. He practically carries you as you limp beside him, but not before taking the blood stained cell phone in his hands.
Past your makeshift bed, past what’s left of your captor, past the red door, and through the hallway to the door at the end that’s now swung open.
You’re both faced with a ladder.
As you’re forced to climb up the rungs you’re less convinced your ribs are just fractured. You whine with each step up.
When he lifts the latch climbing out into the sun, he’s quick to turn around to help you up and out. Once you’ve managed to fully exit the bunker with what you hope is minimal damage you’re left standing barefoot in a suburban backyard. White picket fence and all.
He kicks the hatch closed and you can see that the top of it is made to look just like patchy grass, blending right in with the rest of the yard. The rest of the team never would have found you here.
You stay behind Spencer as he walks towards the front yard, your hand locked around his.
You aren’t really sure what you’re supposed to do now, outside of the basement you suddenly feel small compared to the rest of the world.
Spencer's hand never leaves yours as he flips the unsubs phone open, dialing the number without looking at it as he brings it to his ear.
“Garcia, can you get a trace on this number?” He says it so casually, like it’s any other day.
There’s a moment of silence on the other end of the line until you hear a quiet voice.
“Spencer?”
He hesitates, almost as if he isn’t sure.
“Yeah.”
She starts to speak again but you don’t have a chance to hear what she says as he clicks the phone shut, tossing it onto the grass in front of you both.
In the unforgiving light of the sun you get a really good look at him.
He looks awful.
The dark circles that seem to be permanently under his eyes have practically doubled in size. His jaw is lined with a sprinkle of stubble and god he looks thin.
Of course he always looks thin but now he’s thin.
And none of that even touches the fact that he’s still actively bleeding out of the gashes that decorate his knuckles. When you look him in the eye you can see he’s sizing you up as well.
You’re certain you’re as much of a sight as he is.
A perfect pair.
You stay standing, you’re a little worried that if you sit down you won’t get back up. You thought it was the morning but it looks more like evening, people pass in cars, slowing down at the sight of you and neighbors step out onto their porches.
It isn’t long before you hear sirens. But it isn't the police that pull up first, it’s a black SUV, followed by an ambulance. Hotch and Morgan rush out of the car, guns drawn. You don’t have to tell them he’s already dead, one look at Spencer and they both holster their weapons.
The way Morgan looks at you makes you nauseous.
You’ve seen him look at corpses in a similar manner, scowling like he arrived at the scene a few minutes too late. Hotch seems to sense his reluctance, directing him towards the house. He’s all too happy to get away from you.
You’re glad it’s just Hotch.
He doesn’t try to embrace you, and he does his best to keep his expression neutral, even if it’s obvious he’s profiling you both right now.
You zone out, focusing on the dozens of cop cars that come screeching down the street. Spencer and Hotch are having a conversation but you can’t focus on it when you’ve got half the Seattle police force storming the little blue house. Several of them stop in their tracks, gawking at you.
To be fair, you are standing out on the lawn in panties and a tank top.
A paramedic tries to lead you away from Spencer as he continues to talk with your unit chief, he stops abruptly as you let out a sob that catches you by surprise, a little hiccuping sound as they put an arm around you and try to take you away from him.
Spencer reacts before you can even say his name, yanking you backwards as he shoves the paramedic to the ground. Standing in front of you defensively.
Everybody freezes. Hotch, the other medics, even the cops.
You feel everyone's eyes on the two of you as you cling to Spencer's arm. You want to say something, anything, but your tongue lay uselessly in your mouth.
Hotch is quick to help him to his feet, apologizing profusely as he puts a hand on the paramedics shoulder. You can hear him whisper under his breath.
“I think it’ll be best if we don’t try to separate them.”
When he approaches you his hands are out where you can see them and he speaks softly.
“Reid, we need to get her checked out, from the way she’s walking I would imagine something is probably broken.” You recognize his tone of voice. It’s how he talks to victims on a case once they’ve been rescued. Technically that’s what you are now. “You can go with her but you need to get checked out too, you’ve lost a lot of blood.”
You squeeze his arm, turning to look at him as he nods.
Hotch escorts you both to the ambulance, when they lay you down on the stretcher Spencer stays by your side, silently watching, with his hand always holding yours.
As they examine your ribs someone takes a look at Spencer's fingers, you take the opportunity to finally try and speak.
“How long were we gone?” You don’t recognize the shaky, soft voice that leaves your mouth.
You have seen him smile a single digit number of times since you joined the BAU, right now he gives you a sympathetic smile. Like he’s looking at a wounded animal.
“About three and a half weeks.”
That catches Spencer's attention.
“How is that possible?” He pulls his hand away from the doctor looking him over as he comes to sit beside you on the edge of the ambulance. “We couldn’t have been in there for more than a week.”
“Based on what we saw in the videos he was depriving you of sleep. He kept you awake for long periods of time and let you sleep for short bursts.” He almost looks like he’s about to put a hand on your knee but he thinks better of it when his eyes dart towards Spencer. “Garcia is in the process of recovering all of the footage, we promise we will keep it as private as possible, the rest of the team will not have access to it.”
Three and a half weeks.
“Where’s the rest of the team?” It’s like Spencer can feel how stressed you are as he tries to change the subject.
“They had to return to Quantico.” He looks ashamed of himself as he says it. “We negotiated a deal to keep Morgan and myself on the case for an extended period of time but everyone else needed to return to work.”
“How much time did you have left?” You say it before you can stop yourself.
How much time before you abandoned us completely?
Not that it mattered, it wasn’t the team that saved you.
“We had another week and a half.” You have to give it to Hotch, he doesn’t try to lie to you. You only nod in response, squeezing Spencer's hand before he can say something he regrets.
The paramedic poking at your ribs tells Hotch that they need to get you in for an x-ray as soon as possible, there aren’t any signs of internal bleeding yet but that could change at a moment's notice.
You wish he’d talk to you directly, it makes you feel like a child when they don’t address you.
★
You can see them through the glass.
Emily, Morgan, J.J, even Penelope.
You can also assume what he’s telling them. Usual protocol for someone in the state you’re in is to ease them into interactions with loved ones. At the very least you don’t have to worry about all of them running in here at once.
“We could be in worse shape.” Spencer mumbles from across the room. You refused to be in separate rooms, instead you stand opposite each other in your shared room. Neither one of you is ready to lay down, not after the day you’ve had, you’re too jittery.
He’s right, you really could be.
There aren’t words for the amount of relief you felt when they told you that your urine test came back negative for pregnancy. Your period was likely late because of the stress your body was under. Sure, having his baby wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but in those circumstances? You don’t know how you’d ever live with conceiving a child in those conditions.
Spencer narrowly avoided sepsis, his gums were in bad shape, he’s on an IV drip of a pretty strong antibiotic. They said there was nothing that could be done for his fingers other than eventual cosmetic surgery to try and reconstruct the ends into something other than a smashed, burned mess. And of course he had several fractures along his knuckles.
You did in fact have a broken rib, and two fractured ones. Spencer wasn’t happy to hear that but he never once expressed any upset towards you. You’re pretty sure you could kill someone in front of him and he wouldn’t so much as bat an eye.
And now you’re here.
Your stomach and chest are covered in bandages, his hands are in a similar state. Both sentenced to bed rest for quite some time.
You cringe at the sound of the door opening as Emily steps into the room.
She pulls you into a hug that you struggle to return.
“I’m so glad you’re okay.” She whispers as you hear her sniffle.
You aren’t, but you nod anyway.
“Me too.”
“We have the best nursing staff assembled to do your kit, everyone is female. I can stay with you or I can wait right outside the door.” She gives your hand a squeeze and you instinctively pull away.
“What kit?” You’re hyper aware of how shrill your voice sounds, it makes Spencer stand up straighter across the room.
“The rape kit.” Her expression softens and she speaks like she’s scared you’ll run away like a frightened animal.
You scoff.
“I don’t need a rape kit.”
“We really think you should, hon.” She takes a step towards you and you lurch backwards, Spencer is quick to cross the room to stand beside you, angled imperceptibly between you and Emily.
“I don’t need a rape kit.” You say it more firmly this time, enough to catch the attention of the rest of your team in the hall, Hotch steps into the doorway as you look back and forth between them. “I wasn’t raped.”
A hush falls over the room.
“Maybe we could talk alone, you might be more comfortable-” Emily starts to walk towards you but Spencer steps forward, stopping her in her tracks.
“I’m not going anywhere without Spencer.” You accentuate your point by grabbing his arm and pulling closer.
“No one is saying that this is his fault.” Hotch doesn’t step into the room, he speaks in that steady even tone of his. “You are both victims in this situation, we just need to assess the extent of your wounds.”
“They already did.” You wish they would all stop looking at you like you’re made of glass.
“With wounds of this… genre, it’s best that we get them checked out immediately, we have up to ninety six hours to-” Hotch starts again in that painfully gentle tone, like you might shatter into pieces if he speaks too loudly.
“The answer is no. You can’t do it without my permission, and I’m saying no.”
“I really think we should talk about this privately.” You glare at Emily when she speaks again, you’d always considered her to be your closest friend in the BAU. Now you feel on edge around her, around everyone.
“I said no.” You hiss.
“You can’t legally force her into any testing without her explicit consent.” Spencer finally speaks, measured and authoritative. His tone reminds you of Hotch’s.
It makes Emily flex her fist, they both stare at each other until Hotch steps in between them.
“And we have no plans to do any tests without her permission, if she doesn’t want the kit then we won’t do one.” You can tell Hotch is desperate to deescalate the situation.
“I wasn’t raped.” You repeat yourself, watching as the entire room flinches as you say it.
Including Spencer.
No one has anything to say to that.
“I think I’d like to be alone.” You manage to steady your voice as you glare at them. Hotch is the first to step out of the room, when Emily reaches the doorway she turns back.
“Let’s go Spencer.” The second the words leave her mouth your hand squeezes his. Her eyes dart down as she catches the movement, when her gaze returns to your eyes her expression is devastating.
You don’t want their pity.
Yet they seem resilient in their attempts to shove it down your throat.
“We’ll talk to you all tomorrow. I’d like to sleep.” Your words are the final nail in the coffin.
You are a we now.
An us.
When you’re with Spencer you are alone. Without another word he helps you into your bed before pushing his own bed against yours. Neither one of you speaks as you lay down, you simply hold hands until you feel his breathing become even and steady, the all too familiar indicator that he’s fallen asleep. You take the opportunity to slip into the bathroom. When you flip the lights on you finally know why everyone keeps staring at you. You make Spencer look good in comparison.
You don’t recognize the terrified woman in the mirror. She looks like she survived something much worse than being trapped in a basement for a month.
So much of your skin is covered in bruises.
If he didn’t leave a bite mark or a hickie somewhere he squeezed you so tightly he left handprints. His grip hadn’t felt that tight in the moment.
You look straight out of a horror movie.
A shell of who you once were.
Your hair is still damp from when you had taken a shower earlier, pulling it away from your face while looking at your neck. Dark purple splotches cover your throat, spreading down your clavicle. A line of blisters and burns decorate your neck.
You feel like a monster. No wonder everyone looks at you like you survived something horrifying. Maybe you did.
You flick the lights off after just a few seconds, you don’t want to look at the creature staring back at you anymore.
When you step back into the room he’s sitting up, and he looks at you like you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.
“C’mere.” His voice is thick with sleep as he motions you towards him. You climb into his bed, smoothing his hair down with your hands. “You’re so pretty.”
“You’re delusional.” Your voice sounds like your own again when it’s just the two of you. Not the trembling quiet voice that seems to come out when anyone else is around.
“So, so pretty.”
“Everyone's been staring at me like I’m a ghost.”
“They’re staring because they’re jealous. They can’t believe that you’re so pretty and you’re all mine.” And god, you believe him. Forgetting all about the monster in the mirror. He could tell you the sky was pink and that grass was blue and you’d believe him right now.
“I love you.” He wipes a tear from your lash line with his thumb.
“I love you.” You don’t doubt that for a second.
★
Everything is different now, how could it not be?
Neither one of you could have guessed how your time in the bunker would affect you in the long term.
You both go back to work after a mandatory three month sabbatical. You avoid field work, opting to work from a desk most of the time, no one ever questions the choice. And Spencer always takes the stairs when you come in to work, he says the elevator makes him nauseous.
You moved out of your studio a week after you left the bunker. The single room space you once found cozy now made you feel like you were suffocating. Besides, neither of you slept well when you were apart, it just made sense to move in with him.
Instead of the flowy and light pajamas you used to wear you now sleep in long sleeves and layers, even if it means waking up covered in sweat.
Spencer never falls asleep before you, most nights you wake up to find he’s wrapped himself so tightly around you it’s impossible to get comfortable. You never complain, it doesn’t bother you.
You don’t go to girls' nights anymore and Spencer never takes up Derek’s offer to grab a drink. When there’s the occasional team bonding trip to the bar you both go, never separating your hand from the others.
The picture on your desk of your friends has been replaced with a photo of you and Spencer at your cousin's wedding. The trinkets that once sat under your monitor suddenly seemed silly, eventually they ended up shoved in the back of a drawer. You don’t need them anymore; your deskmate always makes sure you have fresh flowers to brighten up the space.
Instead of being charmingly awkward Spencer’s been described as a bit more blunt and offputting than he used to be. And fine, you aren’t as bubbly as you used to be. You have every right to act the way you do. You still find him plenty charming.
Sure, you miss your friends. You miss spending your lunch breaks trying new local restaurants with Emily, and you miss long nights spent in Penelope's cave working on a case. And maybe you miss early morning trips to the gym with Morgan. But those things aren’t an option for you anymore. You try to be away from him but you can’t, it’s like you’re addicted. If you spend too much time apart you start to break down, hyperventilating until you find your way back to him.
You’d feel worse about it if he wasn’t just as bad.
Maybe worse.
The first time you interrogated an unsub after your sabbatical Spencer had burst into the room and Morgan had to put him in a headlock to stop him from strangling the unsub.
They don’t look at you the same anymore.
Hotch looks at Spence like he’s dangerous.
Morgan doesn’t joke around with you anymore.
Spencer made Penelope cry on your first day back.
And Emily looks at him like he’s holding you hostage.
You don’t care what they think. They didn’t save you, Spencer did. And you’d much rather have the ring that’s around your finger than a cuff around your wrist.
They just don’t understand your relationship, they couldn’t. None of them know what it’s like to be loved like this.
All that matters is that you’re happy, even if they don’t seem convinced.
You aren’t a normal couple.
And you don’t want to be.

angie's notes; ok so i had the hardest time writing the smut postion?? so if it sucks don't say anything 🤫 kinda regretting not making this into a series , or starting this as a series before sweet poison because i'm having way too much fun writing the drama!! <33
“i know you’re mine… and i’ll always be yours, sweetheart,” he stated, kissing your inner knee. you grab his face, gently pulling him upwards, you taste yourself against his tongue, arch, letting out a moan in delight at the way you were kissing him.
you pulled away and reached over to grab a condom from his nightstand. meanwhile, arch took off his boxers, meeting your lips as you gave him a small stroke, rolling on the condom and placing it firmly. “you sure you want to do this?” he whispered, watching as you nodded rapidly.
“words, sweetheart. i won’t do anything until i hear so,” he cleared, his weight resting back onto you after he covered your bodies with his sheet, the room suddenly turning way too cold, careful not to fully crush you.
you kissed him sweetly, head resting back onto his pillows, “i’m sure, arch.”
both of you let out a heavy groan as he pushes his cock into you. arch looks down, seeing where your bodies meet, being gentle, knowing it had been a while. he thinks of anything not to cum on the spot, the football drills from earlier in the day, his new diet plan, how he had less than two months before the first season game.
“you okay?” he whispered, kissing your jaw, watching your eyes flutter open. you could feel him everywhere—the slight curve of his tip, kissing that sweet spot inside. “look at me, i wanna see you,” arch murmured, brushing away a strand of your hair that blocked your face.
“i’m trying to compose myself,” you giggled, his heart wrenching in admiration. “i am too baby, it’s so hard when you’re clenching my cock like this,” he said, seeing you swallow at his filthy words. “you like that, don’t you?” he teased, shifting, hearing a small breath fall from your lips.
you shut him up by kissing him, your legs wrap, and already shaking by his lower hips. “i missed you so much, arch. i wanted to hate you for hurting me,” you admitted, his blue eyes twinging with sadness.
he pushed his hips back before giving you one long, slow, deep stroke, “i know, baby, i know. i was miserable because i couldn’t stop thinking of you, of how i made you feel, and i’m sorry, so sorry,” he lets out in ragged breaths, lips twitching as he feels your velvety falls wrap around him tightly.
he started to quicken his pace, his hips creating a rocking movement, not to much, nor too slow. it was the perfect and delicious pace that had your eyes and head rolling back, resisting the urge to cry his name out, knowing he probably had his iconic smirk.
he took advantage of your throat exposed, lowering his lips to press a kiss and nibble under your chin, “what did i say? eyes on me.”
his hand reached up to bring and draw your face back. the position, the look on his face, the swiftness, it was too intimate, causing thrills all over. arch was absolutely captivated by you, how beautiful you were. he wasn’t sure he’d ever seen someone so captivating in his life, ever. an absolute masterpiece. he swore under his breath, seeing how you listened to him.
“i love you so much, so much, i can’t afford the idea of ever losing you again. of having to bear and watch another man make you happy when i can give you the world… anything you want,” arch declared, his cock digging deeper with each thrust.
“oh, fuck fuck fuck,” you exclaimed, eyes threatening to shut close. there was a slight pressure as he drew in and out, but the pleasure overtook it. his hand moved and rested next to your head, but you weren’t having that.
you managed to sneak them around his shoulders, pushing him gently on top of you, feeling his heavy weight. arch lets out a heavy groan at your whimpers, holding himself back from fastening his pace, “you’re so deep… i can feel you everywhere.”
“shitttt, you feel so good, clenching around me like a good girl. you have no idea how amazing you feel, just for me… right baby? no other man can make you feel this way?” he said, not asking. he knew no one could top and make you feel the way he was. that you were ruined for anyone else who tried to take you. but it wasn’t going to happen.
your heart skipped a beat at his words, “yours, arch,” you nodded, sealing the promise with a kiss. the slow drag of his tongue made your eyes close, his lips moving softly as his hips quicken the pace. there was no better feeling than this, and you could’ve sworn by that.
your hand raked his hair, the locks feeling thick and wet. arch groaned, chest heaving, feeling you tug harshly, “it feels so good, please don’t stop,” you pleaded. your other hand wrapped around his bicep, it looked so small compared to his size, which sent your mind into a frenzy, nails sinking deep and creating crescent shapes.
“i’d be a sick man if i stopped now… still with me, right?”
“i’m here, and i-i-i also love you too,” you said through a breathless, shaky laugh.
“you’re so beautiful, baby… you know that? the most gorgeous thing i’ve ever laid my eyes on,” he said, brown pushing deep as he felt a familiar coil deep in his core. you didn’t know how or when, but arch turned himself, feeling his cock at a different angle, one that pushed further than before.
he knew it was the spot. he knew you were seeing stars at how he kept kissing the fleck over and over with his sensitive tip. you were so close, and so was he, seeing the drunken look on his face. arch’s thrust became ragged, but still enough to create a rhythm that made your legs shake around him.
“please tell me you forgive me. i’ll make it up for every time i let you down,” he wept, watching as your head turned to the side and nodded. you remembered his words, facing back to look at him.
“of course, i forgive you, but things have to change, and you know that,” you said, your tummy clenching at a familiar bubble wanting to burst within you. “as long as it’s you and me, we can overcome anything, including your brother,” he fastened his pace, feeling his cock drill in and out of your entrance.
“you’re talking about my brother while you're inside me?” you joked, your brow raised, hearing and feeling his hefty laugh. he was hitting all of the correct spots like he’d known your body for years. you felt his hips stammer, unable to control the spasm that would soon overtake.
“gosh, i love you, i love you, i love you,” arch grunted as he pressed his hips with no space against yours and let go. you cried out, eyes shut as his face fell and nudged yours. that pit in your stomach bursts, its soul crushing, your brain in a frenzy, the pleasure spreading throughout your body. you felt his cock jerk with overstimulation, his warm release filling inside the barrier.
that wasn’t the first, or second, or third time after that. following the morning after that night, arch swore things would be different, and they were. despite being ready, you held back telling your brother; the timing wasn’t ideal, and neither of you were ready for that type of confrontation.
he took you out on dates, within the city and out of it. he wrote and left small notes around your place, some were reminders of how much he loved you, others were his favorite things about you. he visited you anytime he had the chance, wanting to spend any opportunity he could before the busy schedule.
each hug, each kiss, each cuddle, each laugh shared, they all meant something. from the smallest to the biggest action, he wanted you to know there was no one else but you in his life. for any chance he took it because in the end it led to you.
you were his safe and happy place, as he was yours. you’d be lying if you said the hiding around didn’t get tiring, but there was an unspoken thrill that came with it, too. you seemed like a different person compared to weeks ago, someone bubblier and more content.
safe to say it was the same with him. earning playful teasing at practice, from his family when on facetime from a long distance, even your brother, even if he was oblivious, it was his own sister making arch feel this way.
he was a changed man, and it was for the better. not because he had to, but because he wanted to be and offer the best version of himself to you.
he made it official not long after. dragging you out to a hideaway near a small lake just outside of austin. arch planned a picnic by the water, carrying your favorite snacks and a meal from a spot downtown. he also brought activities to keep both of you busy until he popped the question.
he caught your embrace when you launched yourself to him, unable to kiss you back properly as he let out a contented sigh and laugh. it felt like a relief, but in the happiest way. not a pressure or burden. the perfect feeling.
but with every optimistic feeling comes a sudden downside that neither of you saw coming.
you kept your relationship hidden for weeks after you overheard your brother say he’d terminate anyone who dared to overstep a line with you. it scared you. and arch. he wasn’t prepared or ready to lose his best friend. you weren’t ready to lose your brother, to see his disappointment, for him to feel the betrayal.
you felt you had come such a long way to suddenly have it ripped away. it affected both of you. why was it so hard to love someone when you knew it was wrong? why did it hurt being with him when you created and had something so meaningful and beautiful?
you slowly distanced yourself from arch without realizing it. arch felt like you were slipping through his fingers, knowing he could prevent it. which is why he didn’t hesitate to reassure, you were the only person he was capable of loving.
it wasn’t the fact itself; it was the scary burden you’d lose your family over a boy. knowing you disrespected his boundaries and rules. but when someone was so in love, you can't control it; the heart wants what it wants, and in this case, it was yours and arch’s
arch
is it okay if i come over?
i know you’ve been feeling down
and i have the perfect solution for it 🙂

you never have to ask!! <33
i’ll see you soon, xx
be safe, love youuuuu
he greeted you with a slow and long kiss, arms wrapping their way around your waist, feeling like a sick man without your warmth. “gosh, i've missed you… i needed to see you before i went crazy,” arch teased.
“so dramatic, come in, i have the ac on,” you said, kissing him sweetly again before closing the door. but this time, a black shoe prevented it from closing, your stomach dropping at the reality it could mean, “arch…”
“what’s wrong?” he asked, concerned before freezing, not daring to take any steps, seeing who came into view.
your brother’s face was stunned, looking hurt. your eyes welled up with tears, not at the realization of being caught, but because you knew how your brother was feeling deep down. “i can explain-” you let out, watching as he paced over to arch, who seemed pale as a ghost.
“you asshole! you messed around with my sister, knowing it was off limits!” he yelled out, grabbing your boyfriend by the collar of his shirt. “we can explain! please let’s just sit down and talk,” arch said defensively.
“what’s there to explain? that you couldn’t keep it in your pants? that you fell for my sister when she suddenly changed and looked different? you’re sick!” he rousted him around, arch falling to your couch, his scared look not leaving his face.
“it’s not like that, john, please just stop,” you yelled, grabbing and pushing him away before he committed a mistake.
“i thought parker was kidding when he was telling me all this shit about you two having something. turns out he was right all along. you’re fucking him, knowing his intentions are far from commitment y/n! how stupid could you be?”
“it’s not like that, i swear, please let us just talk like normal people,” you begged. arch stood up, standing inches taller than john, “she’s not some casual hookup. i would never do something like that, let alone with her. i love her,” arch explained, yet all john could do was let out a laugh.
“stop with the bullshit. i know you, arch. i’ve known you for so long, and this is how you treat me? going behind my back and messing with my sister?”
“john, hold on! you’re overreacting-” you came between, seeing his nostrils flare angrily. “i’m overreacting? what’s there to explain here? that you love him simply because he says so? you’re unbelievable, hear yourself, but put yourself in my shoes and see how this looks. how it makes me feel,” john grabbed you by the shoulders, his grip tight, eyes angry.
“whoring yourself for a guy who wouldn’t hesitate to leave you after he gets his short end of the stick,” john spoke, your heart twisting at his words. arch tried to pull him away, knowing he was scaring you from how rageful he appeared. he also wouldn’t stand there and allow him to hurt you physically either.
“you’re pathetic, y/n.”

Between Then and Now
The Bear AU (Part twenty-five)
To my masterlist!
Pairing: Carmen x Fem! Ofc
Summary: As the lines between their separate lives continue to blur, Lisa and Carmy navigate the growing weight of their new reality. When a spontaneous dinner invitation forces the issue, they are both confronted with the reality of just how deeply they have become entwined.
A/N: Hi everyone! I hope you’re ready for this one—it’s a bit of a slower, more introspective chapter. We’re finally diving into the "domestic" side of their dynamic and what happens when two people start building a home before they’ve even really had the conversation about what that means. I’m so excited for you all to see the little shifts in their relationship. Thank you for all the love on this story; it truly means the world! Happy reading! ❤️
"You gonna tell me why Noah walked into the kitchen five minutes ago and announced that Carmen Berzatto invited us to dinner on this Friday?"
Lisa paused halfway through folding one of Ben's tiny T-shirts.
"What? How?"
"He texted Noah."
She couldn't help smiling.
"Of course he did."
Matt laughed on the other end.
Then he went quiet.
"Hang on... why is your... why is Carmen texting my husband?"
She rolled her eyes.
"Because apparently they're planning something."
"No, seriously. Back up."
"...Matt."
"Lisa."
She sighed.
"We went on a date."
Silence.
"You what?"
"Two weeks ago."
Another silence.
"And you just... forgot to mention that?"
"I didn't forget," Lisa said, pretending she is offended. "I've been busy."
"I know, darling, you have a toddler, a full-time job," Matt makes a pause, ready to tease Lisa. "And apparently a boyfriend now."
She closed her eyes. "...Don't call him that."
"What am I supposed to call the guy who took you on a date, has been sleeping at your apartment for two weeks and is now inviting your family to his restaurant?"
She froze. "...Who told you he's been sleeping here?"
"No one," Matt chuckled. "I know you so well. For 15 years already."
She let out a defeated laugh. "You're impossible."
"So... it's true."
"I guess..." She hesitated.
Another beat.
"Like...Every night?"
"Not every night."
"But..."
"...Most."
"Huh."
"What?"
"I'm just..."
She could practically hear him smiling.
"I wasn't expecting this."
"Neither was I."
That, at least, was true. Nothing about those last two weeks had gone the way she'd imagined.
It had started that Sunday afternoon. Carmy had followed her and Ben home, cooked dinner before she had the chance to argue, and then disappeared into the bathroom with Ben. She'd heard splashing. Ben laughing so hard he could barely breathe. Carmy's exhausted, "Buddy... c'mon, man..."
When they'd finally emerged, Ben smelled like baby shampoo. Carmy was soaked.
"You let him win?" she'd asked.
"He cheats."
"He is not even two."
"I know. He still cheats."
After she'd tucked Ben in, she walked out to find him wiping down her kitchen counters, wearing a faded gray T-shirt he wasn't wearing earlier.
"Where'd that come from?"
"My car."
"You keep spare clothes in your car?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
He'd looked at her like the answer was obvious. "...Kitchen."
That shirt never made it back to his trunk. Neither did the hoodie. Or the sweatpants. His toothbrush quietly appeared beside hers.
Even the spare key she'd kept in the junk drawer had somehow found its way onto his keychain. There hadn't been a conversation about it. On Tuesday morning, before taking Ben to the daycare, he'd been halfway out the door when he'd looked back over his shoulder.
"Can I borrow the spare key? So we can come in later?"
She hadn't even looked up from the coffee she was making.
"Sure. It's in the junk drawer."
He'd thanked her, slipped it onto his keyring...and somehow never gave it back.
It had simply become his. It had been three days.
At some point, without either of them acknowledging it, pieces of Carmen Berzatto simply stopped leaving her apartment.
She found one of his white chef T-shirts folded neatly between her own clothes after doing laundry one evening.
She'd stood there staring at it longer than she cared to admit.
It reminded her too much of New York. Back then, his things had slowly found their way into her apartment too. A sweatshirt over a chair. A knife roll leaning against the wall. Coffee beans he'd insisted tasted better.
Back then, she'd believed that meant he was staying.
She'd been wrong.
The memory still knew how to bite.
But it never lasted long. It rarely had the chance.
Two weeks.
That was all it had been.
Fourteen days since he'd followed her and Ben home after lunch at Natalie's.
Fourteen days shouldn't have been enough for someone to feel stitched into the fabric of her everyday life.
And yet Carmy would walk into the room carrying Ben upside down over one shoulder... and thinking became impossible.
Even on service days, he somehow found forty-five minutes to pick Ben up from daycare before heading back to The Bear.
Forty-five minutes.
Just enough time to build train tracks across the living room floor or make grilled cheese because someone had suddenly become starving.
It wasn't much.
Somehow, he made it enough.
By the time Lisa got home, Ben would already be in pajamas.
"Mama! Dinos," he'd announce proudly over a plate of nuggets.
"Oh, Daddy made you chicken nuggets?"
"No! Dinosaurs!"
Carmy never argued. He'd just shrug. "They're dinosaurs."
Then he'd check the time. "I gotta go."
A kiss pressed automatically to Ben's curls. Another stolen from the corner of Lisa's mouth. Natural. Almost absentminded.
For something that had only been happening for two weeks, the evenings settled into their lives with alarming ease.
After Ben went to bed, neither of them seemed in any hurry to call it a night anymore.
On the few evenings Carmen didn’t have to work, they stayed in the kitchen long after the dishes were done, leaning against opposite counters while talking about absolutely nothing.
After that, they’d put on a movie neither of them actually watched.
Somewhere around the twenty-minute mark, one of them would say something, the television would quietly fade into the background, and before she knew it they were still talking halfway through the credits.
Without really thinking about it, Carmy always ended up beside her.
Sometimes he'd take her legs and absentmindedly rest them across his lap while they talked, gently rubbing slow circles over her thighs and ankles without ever looking down.
Sometimes his hand found hers.
Sometimes he’d just climb onto the couch and rest his head in her lap, letting her fingers drift through his hair.
It was never deliberate.
It just... happened.
Even on the nights he had a shift, he tried to make it back until after one in the morning, exhausted and smelling faintly of smoke, butter and dish soap, she almost always woke when he slipped into bed.
"Hey."
"Hey."
A quiet kiss.
A few sleepy seconds.
Then—
"How was service?"
Sometimes he'd just sigh.
"Long."
Other nights, something unexpected happened.
He'd tell her a story.
Richie arguing with the fish delivery.
Marcus making enough focaccia to feed half of Chicago.
Sugar calling him because she'd forgotten where she'd left her own phone while talking on it.
Small things.
Completely ordinary.
Somehow thirty minutes disappeared before either of them noticed.
She'd spent six months in New York believing she'd known him.
She'd known how he took his coffee.
Which records he always reached for first.
How he kissed.
How he worked.
She'd mistaken familiarity for knowing someone.
These last two weeks quietly proved how much of him had always remained hidden.
Somewhere between midnight conversations and ordinary Tuesdays, they had started building something they'd never quite managed the first time.
Not another romance.
A companionship.
Which made everything else so much harder.
Because the physical closeness never stopped.
If anything, it only became more natural.
His hand settled instinctively against the small of her back whenever he walked past.
He reached for her fingers during walks without thinking.
He stole quick kisses whenever Ben disappeared into another room for exactly thirty seconds.
At night it was worse.
He rarely fell asleep without pulling her against him.
One arm around her waist.
His forehead brushing the back of her neck.
Sometimes she'd wake before dawn to find his hand still resting against her hip, exactly where it'd been when they'd fallen asleep.
As if even asleep, he was reluctant to let her go.
And every single time...
He stopped himself.
She could feel it.
Sometimes a kiss lingered a second longer than it probably should have.
Sometimes his hands drifted just a little farther before he quietly pulled them back.
Not because he didn't want more.
Because he did.
She wasn't the only one struggling to keep the promise they'd made after their date.
She could feel the restraint in the way he exhaled against her skin.
In the tiny hesitation before he let her go.
In the way he always chose to roll onto his back for a few minutes afterward, as though putting a little space between them was easier than trusting himself not to erase the line they'd promised not to cross.
One evening she'd found him standing in her bedroom, a towel hanging low around his hips while he rubbed another through his damp curls.
She'd looked.
Far longer than she probably should have.
He glanced over.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Okay."
He turned toward the dresser, opening one drawer after another.
"You seen my shorts?"
"Uh..." She swallowed. "Lower drawer. The left one."
"Thanks."
He found them, pulled them on without another thought, and wandered back toward the bathroom.
Completely oblivious.
Meanwhile, she'd spent the next ten minutes wondering whether cold showers actually worked.
It had seemed like such a mature decision after their date.
Slow.
Healthy.
Responsible.
She was beginning to hate whoever had suggested it.
"Lis?" Matt's voice pulled her back. "You there?"
She smiled sheepishly.
"Sorry, yeah. Had my mind somewhere else."
"So..." He cleared his throat. "We're obviously coming."
Relief loosened something inside her chest.
"You are?"
"Girl, when will we have an opportunity like this again, to eat at a goddamm Michelin-starred restaurant?"
Lisa chuckled.
Another pause. Then—
"Can I ask you something?"
"You always do, Matt."
"Am I overinterpreting this or... Are you sounding somehow nervous? Is it because we're coming... or because this makes everything real?"
The smile faded from her face. She looked around her apartment. Ben's coloring book. Carmy's hoodie hanging over the back of the couch. His coffee mug by the sink. His running shoes by the front door.
Little traces of him everywhere.
"I don't know," she admitted quietly. "If you and Noah come... it's not just dinner anymore. Our families will know each other."
"We already kind of do."
"Yeah..."
She looked toward the hallway.
"But before..."
She stopped. How could she explain it?
"Before, you knew about him."
Another pause.
"Now he's texting Noah."
She let out a quiet laugh that wasn't really a laugh.
"I didn't even think twice about it... I think that's what scares me.”
Silence settled between them.
When Matt finally spoke again, his voice had softened.
"You know what I think?"
"What?"
"I think you've spent so long waiting for something bad to happen..."
He let the thought sit between them for a moment.
"...that now you don't really know what to do because it hasn't."
Lisa swallowed.
He wasn't wrong.
"Just let yourself be happy for a while, my love."
For a second, neither of them said anything.
Then Lisa smiled faintly.
"I'll try."
"I know you will."
"Tell Noah I'll text him the details."
"I will."
"Bye, Matt."
"Love you, darling."
"Love you too."
The call ended.
Silence settled over the apartment.
Lisa lowered the phone, letting it rest against her thigh.
Her eyes wandered almost instinctively.
Ben's coloring book still open on the coffee table. Carmy's hoodie draped over the back of the couch where he'd abandoned it that morning. His coffee mug waiting beside the sink. His running shoes tucked neatly next to the front door.
Little pieces of him. Everywhere.
Two weeks ago she would've noticed every single one.
Now...
They'd simply become part of the apartment.
Part of her days. Part of her life.
The sound of keys turning in the lock pulled her from her thoughts.
The door swung open.
"Mama!"
Ben's voice echoed through the apartment before she'd even turned around.
A second later she heard Carmy laugh softly.
"We're home, Lis."
She looked toward the hallway.
Ben had already kicked off one shoe and was running full speed toward her.
Carmy stood in the doorway behind him, grocery bag hanging from one hand, keys still dangling from the other.
He caught her eye.
Smiled.
Her heart stumbled.
Not because of the words.
Because he'd said them so easily.
As though he'd never considered there might be another way to say it.
Lisa barely had time to crouch before Ben launched himself into her arms.
"There you are," she laughed, kissing his cheek. "Did you have fun with Stephen today?"
"Yes!"
She looked over his shoulder.
Carmy was already setting the grocery bag on the kitchen counter as if he'd been doing it for years instead of two weeks.
"I grabbed milk," he said. "And... uh... you were almost out of coffee."
"Oh,” She blinked. "Thanks, Carm."
He only shrugged.
"You would've bought it tomorrow anyway."
She watched him unpack the bag.
Milk.
Eggs.
Coffee.
Bananas Ben would probably refuse to eat until they turned brown.
Completely ordinary things.
The kind of things people stopped thinking about.
----
The next half hour passed almost exactly the way every late afternoon had started to pass.
Ben sat on the rug, rearranging his dinosaurs. Carmy crouched beside him, his voice low and steady.
From the kitchen, Lisa rinsed the vegetables. The cold water hit the sink with a sharp, aggressive spray, a stark contrast to the quiet humming coming from the living room.
Clack. The wooden train tracks hit the floor.
“Dada, look!”
“Don’t let the T-Rex win, buddy. He cheats.”
A small burst of laughter.
Lisa gripped the edge of the counter until her knuckles ached.
The apartment felt fuller tonight.
Her eyes moved without permission.
His car keys on the counter.
His backpack on the couch.
Small things.
Everywhere.
Him.
It used to feel temporary when she noticed them.
Now she wasn’t sure when it had stopped feeling that way.
Her throat tightened.
She turned off the tap too early. Water still clung to her hands as she stared at the sink, like she could find something stable there.
And then—
She felt him behind her.
Warm fingers brushed lightly against the small of her back as he reached around her for the glasses. So familiar it almost didn’t register.
Until it did.
A flicker of something sharp moved through her chest.
"You good?
His voice was low. Close.
She turned her head.
He was looking at her—not worried exactly. Just checking.
"...Yeah." A beat. "Matt called."
"He did?"
"He said you texted Noah."
Recognition crossed his face immediately.
"...Yeah," he nodded. "I already had his number, so..."
He shrugged, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"I just asked if Friday worked."
Lisa looked down at the knife in her hand.
"Okay... I, uh, I thought..." The words caught somewhere halfway out.
He waited.
"I thought we'd talk about it first."
Silence. Not uncomfortable. Just unexpected.
"About dinner?"
"No," she shook her head immediately. "I mean..."
God. How did she explain something she hadn't managed to explain to herself?
"I just," she sighed. "...I haven't really talked to Noah and Matt about..."
Her hand made a vague gesture between the two of them.
"...Us."
The word felt strangely unfamiliar.
"You know," another small laugh escaped her. "About the date... About... everything else."
She stopped again.
Carmy watched her carefully.
"I thought I'd tell them first."
Understanding settled over his face almost instantly. Not hurt. Recognition.
"...Right." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I didn't think about that. I'm sorry."
"You don't have to apologize."
"I thought I was helping."
"You were," she answered so quickly it almost overlapped him. "You really were."
And she meant it.
He held her gaze another second before nodding once.
"...Okay."
No argument. No explanation. Just acceptance.
His phone vibrated in his pocket. He glanced at the screen.
"Richie."
Lisa smiled faintly.
"Go."
He answered immediately.
"Yeah?"
She turned back toward the cutting board, trying to focus on slicing tomatoes while his conversation unfolded behind her.
"...No."
Pause.
"...Just push it back."
Another pause.
"...I'm on my way."
His voice had changed. Not colder. Sharper. Focused.
Chef.
By the time he ended the call, he was already reaching for his jacket.
"I gotta head in a little earlier."
She nodded.
"It's okay."
"I'm sorry."
"You don't have to be."
He stepped closer, pressing a quick kiss to the top of Ben's head as the little boy continued rearranging his impossible train station.
Then he looked back at Lisa.
"I'll come back after service."
The words were so automatic. So certain.
She opened her mouth before she'd really thought them through.
"Actually..."
He paused.
She looked at the laptop sitting closed on the dining table.
"I've still got that article. The one Nick's waiting for. I barely touched it today."
He nodded.
"Right."
"I think..." She searched for words that didn't sound bigger than they were. "...I think I might just work tonight."
Another nod.
"Okay."
"And..." She hated how difficult this suddenly felt. "...Don't worry about coming back."
Silence.
He didn't speak right away.
She watched something flicker behind his eyes.
Quick enough that she almost convinced herself she'd imagined it.
"You sure?"
"It's just for tonight." She smiled, hoping it sounded reassuring. "I think I just need a little time to catch up."
He looked at her for another second.
"...Course."
The word came quietly. Without hesitation. Without complaint.
He simply accepted it. Like he always did.
He slipped his keys into his pocket.
Bent down to kiss Ben again.
"You be good for Mama, alright?"
Ben nodded solemnly without looking up from the train tracks.
"Okay."
Carmy smiled.
Then he straightened. His eyes found Lisa.
For two weeks, this part had become instinct.
He always kissed her goodbye.
He took one step toward her.
Stopped. Barely.
Just enough for uncertainty to exist.
Lisa saw it. A tiny hesitation.
Gone almost as quickly as it appeared.
Something tightened painfully inside her chest.
Before he had the chance to decide otherwise, she closed the last bit of distance herself.
A soft kiss. Brief. Warm.
"Have a good service, chef."
He rested his forehead lightly against hers for the smallest fraction of a second.
"Thanks, Lis."
Then he smiled. Small. Tired.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
Tomorrow.
Not later. Not tonight.
Tomorrow.
She nodded. "...Tomorrow."
He left.
The door clicked shut behind him.
The apartment became quiet again.
Not empty. Ben was still humming to himself on the floor. Water still ran softly into the sink.
Everything looked exactly the same.
Lisa stared at the closed front door for a long moment.
Tomorrow suddenly felt very far away.

Between Then and Now
The Bear AU (Part twenty-four)
To my masterlist!
Pairing: Carmen x Fem! Ofc
Summary: After an unforgettable night, Lisa finds herself navigating something far more unsettling than uncertainty: comfort. As old routines give way to new ones, familiar faces, family chaos, and quiet moments force her to confront a possibility she never thought she'd allow herself to consider. Sometimes the scariest thing isn't the past—it's realizing the future might actually be within reach.
A/N: Hi everyone! ❤️ First of all, thank you for your patience. It's been a little while since the last update, but I'm really happy to finally be back with Lisa, Carmy, and Ben. We're officially getting closer to the end of this story now, which feels both exciting and a little surreal after spending so much time with these characters. Thank you for still being here and for continuing to care about their journey. I hope you enjoy this chapter. ❤️
Lisa woke slowly.
For a few seconds, she couldn't figure out why her right arm hurt.
Then she tried to move. And couldn't.
A warm weight tightened around her waist immediately.
She blinked.
Oh. Right. Carmy.
The memories of the night before settled over her all at once. The wine. The talking. The kiss.
The way he'd practically dragged her against him the second they'd gotten into bed.
At the time, she'd assumed he would let go eventually.
Apparently not.
Lisa stared at the wall.
One arm was trapped underneath her. The other was pinned somewhere between her stomach and the mattress. His chest was pressed firmly against her back. One leg hooked entirely over hers.
She tried shifting carefully.
Nothing.
She tried again.
The hold tightened.
Lisa bit back a laugh.
Jesus Christ. Had he spent the entire night like this?
Her hip definitely suggested yes.
Slowly, she attempted another escape.
The mattress shifted.
Behind her, Carmy made a low sound. Not quite awake. Not quite asleep.
His arm flexed. Then loosened. A second later, he froze.
She felt it happen. The exact moment his brain caught up to his body.
“...shit.”
His voice was rough with sleep.
Lisa smiled into the pillow. “Morning.”
Another pause. Then:
“Was I doing this all night?”
She looked down at the arm wrapped securely around her middle. “Seems like it.”
A groan.
“Oh my God.”
Now she was laughing.
“Sorry,” Carmy dropped his forehead heavily against her shoulder. “I didn't mean to—”
“Well, you attached yourself to me like a koala.”
A strangled sound escaped him as he moved a bit to the side, giving Lisa finally some space.
She turned enough to look at him. His hair was sticking up in every direction. His eyes were barely open. And somehow, he looked genuinely embarrassed.
Which made it significantly harder not to laugh.
“Carm...”
He covered part of his face with one hand, rubbing his eyes. “I’m serious. Sorry.”
“It’s fine... I mean, my ribs might need a minute to remember how to function at full capacity again, but it’s alright.”
His eyes widened immediately, a flash of guilt crossing his face.
Lisa laughed softly.
Before he could spiral into another apology, she leaned in and pressed a light kiss to his mouth. It caught him completely off guard—his eyes fluttering shut a fraction of a second too late, his sleep-fogged brain having zero time to react before she was already pulling away.
Smiling, she pushed the duvet back and sat up. She stretched her arms over her head, her spine popping lightly in the quiet room.
Carmy stayed exactly where he was, lying on his side.
He didn't look away. He watched her stretch, his gaze tracking the line of her back where his oversized t-shirt draped against her skin. The heavy, lingering sleep vanished from his expression instantly, snapping into something much sharper.
She was actually here. In his apartment. In his bed.
And the sudden, jarring absence of her body heat against his chest was already bothering him.
Before he could overthink it, a sharp vibration rattled against the wooden nightstand.
Carmy sat up in bed and grabbed his phone, squinting at the bright screen. He immediately sighed, letting his head drop back against the headboard.
“Natalie.”
Lisa smiled, pulling her knees to her chest. “Good luck.”
He answered, putting it on loudspeaker.
“What.”
“Wow,” Natalie’s voice echoed faintly through the room. “Good morning to you too.”
“It’s eight in the morning.”
“Exactly. Perfect time for a debrief.”
Carmy closed his eyes. “No.”
“How’d it go?”
“Nat —”
“Carmen.”
“Not now, okay?”
Lisa pressed her lips together.
Natalie continued talking anyway.
“So you’re refusing to answer, which means it went well.”
“It doesn’t mean anything.”
“It absolutely means something.”
“It doesn’t.”
“It does.”
Lisa watched the familiar sibling argument unfold. The rhythm of it felt oddly familiar. Comfortable. A little like her conversations with Noah. Maybe a sibling thing.
Then Natalie asked:
“Is Lisa there?”
His eyes flicked to her.
Lisa immediately shook her head. One quick motion. No.
A beat. Then he turned back to the screen of his phone.
“No,” he said, the lie coming out surprisingly smoothly. “She went home last night.”
Natalie was silent for a second.
“...uh-huh.”
Carmy rubbed his face. “What?”
“Nothing, just saying.”
Lisa buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking.
She was trying not to laugh. It was making it worse. Somehow this whole white lie made her feel like a teenager again.
Carmy shifted slightly toward her. He was still listening to Natalie, still staring straight at his phone like he wasn’t actively lying to his sister.
But his hand landed flat on her bare thigh. A firm squeeze.
A warning more than anything.
Lisa froze for half a second, her breath catching at the sudden, heavy pressure. She looked up at him.
His eyes flicked to her.
Just once.
Sharp. Controlled. A clear please, don’t without a single word.
Her mouth parted slightly. Sorry, she silently mouthed.
Carmy didn’t react with his face. His expression stayed completely deadpan for the phone call.
But his hand stayed there. Steadier now.
His thumb moved once against her skin—slower this time. Less of a reprimand, more of an anchor. Like he was keeping her there with him as much as he was keeping himself grounded.
Lisa bit down hard on her lower lip to stop the smile from coming back, the heat of his palm completely short-circuiting her brain.
Holding her gaze for one more second, he smartly redirected the conversation.
“How was it with Ben?”
Immediately, Natalie launched into the morning update. Ben and Sophie running around the house. Pete making a massive stack of pancakes. Ben insisting on helping, dropping flour everywhere, and Pete somehow remaining aggressively cheerful about the mess.
Carmy listened, a faint smile pulling at the corner of his mouth, his thumb still sweeping steadily across Lisa’s thigh.
“Anyway,” Natalie transitioned smoothly, her tone shifting into full management mode. “I was thinking about today. Since you guys probably had a great night, and the kids are definitely not ready to be apart yet, we’re all going to have lunch together.”
Carmy frowned faintly. “Nat—”
“I’m serious,” she steamrolled him. “We are in a really good place right now. It would be nice to just be together as a family. So, I want you to invite Lisa to come over, and I expect you both here around noon. Pete is already cooking something... and he may need your help.”
“Well, I —, I don't know her plans, maybe she’s —.”
“Oh, c’mon,” Natalie sounded entirely unimpressed. “We're having lunch. Call her.”
“Nat—”
“We'll see you guys around noon.”
“Nat.”
“Bye, Bear.”
The line went dead. The apartment fell silent. For a second neither of them moved.
Carmy stared at the phone.
Then at Lisa.
Then back at the phone.
“She hung up on me.”
Lisa nodded solemnly.
“She did.”
“She does that.”
“I gathered.”
He dropped the phone onto the mattress with a sigh. For a moment, they just looked at each other.
Finally, Carmy rubbed a hand across his jaw. “...you got plans for lunch?”
Lisa stared at him. Then burst out laughing. A real laugh this time. Bright and immediate. The kind she couldn't stop even if she tried.
For a second he looked offended.
Then his mouth twitched and he laughed too. A quiet, helpless sound.
Because they both knew neither of them had a choice. Natalie had already made the decision for them.
----
Lisa retreated to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face before pulling her dress from last night back on. It felt instantly different in the daylight. Wrinkled. Out of place. Still, the mirror reflected someone who looked suspiciously happy for a woman who'd slept three hours in somebody else's t-shirt.
When she walked out, Carmy was in the kitchen.
He had thrown on a clean white t-shirt and his jeans, his hair still a bit wild from last night. He was standing by the espresso machine, pouring coffee into two travel mugs.
The air between them felt different now.
Not bad. Just... awake.
In the dark, tangled in the sheets, his clinginess had felt instinctive. But standing in his bright, sterile kitchen, Carmy seemed hyper-aware of his own hands. He pushed one into his front pocket. He watched her walk in, his eyes dropping to the dress, a brief, loaded reminder of the night before crossing his face before he quickly looked back at the coffee machine.
He was hesitating.
Lisa could practically see the gears grinding in his head.
“Here,” he said, his voice a little raspy as he held out a mug.
“Thanks.” Lisa took it, her fingers brushing lightly against his.
Carmy let his hand drop to his side. He rubbed his thumb slowly over his own knuckles where her skin had just grazed his.
He cleared his throat.
“So. We have like... a bit over three hours.” He looked at her, intensely focused but physically still.
“Yeah,” Lisa said, taking a sip of the coffee. “I figure we go to my place so I can get changed. Maybe grab some food on the way. If you want.”
“Sure,” Carmy immediately nodded. “That sounds perfect.”
A few minutes later, they set their empty mugs in the sink. Lisa grabbed her purse from the kitchen stool while Carmy disappeared briefly to grab a gray pullover from his bedroom.
As he joined her at the door, Lisa was already preparing to slip one arm into her coat.
Before she could do it, Carmy stepped forward automatically.
"Here."
His hands found the fabric. He helped her adjust it over her shoulders.
A small thing. An intimate thing.
And all the while looking at her, searching for any clue of what to do next.
Lisa noticed something in his expression tightening.
Before she could say anything, Carmen shifted his weight. Then his hand lifted. Careful.
His fingertips brushed lightly against her cheek. Giving her every opportunity to pull away.
She didn't.
Lisa smiled. Small. Warm. Enough.
The hesitation disappeared.
Carmy closed the distance. His hand found the side of her neck, his thumb slipping lightly under her jaw. It wasn't smooth. It wasn't rehearsed. It was almost a little clumsy in its urgency. He ducked his head and kissed her.
It started slow, testing the waters of the morning light, but the second Lisa kissed him back, a quiet noise escaped his throat. He pulled her a fraction closer, deepening the kiss until any lingering awkwardness of the kitchen completely dissolved.
When they finally pulled apart, neither of them moved very far.
Lisa smiled again.
"Ready?"
Carmy stared at her for a moment. Then he huffed a quiet laugh.
"Let’s go."
---
By the time they reached the bakery, Lisa’s brain was struggling to keep up.
Not because anything dramatic had happened.
Quite the opposite.
Everything had felt strangely... natural.
Carmy had taken her hand the second they stepped out of the apartment. Not consciously. Not with any fanfare. Just reached for it like it belonged there. Then, on the walk to the car, he hadn’t let go.
Now, standing in line in the crowded, noisy bakery, she could feel the steady weight of his hand resting against her hip.
Close enough that every shift of her weight brushed her against him. Close enough that she could feel the warmth of his chest through the thin layers of their clothes.
It was ridiculous how aware of him she was.
The old Carmy never did this.
Not in New York. Not even when they were alone. Definitely not in public.
Back then, she had always been the one with initiative. The one reaching first. The one leaning in first. The one finding excuses to touch him.
Now it felt like the exact opposite.
And she couldn't stop wondering why.
“What about that one?”
His voice was low, right beside her ear, pulling her completely out of her head.
Lisa jumped slightly. “What?”
He nodded toward a pastry in the display case. “The cinnamon thing.”
Lisa followed his gaze to the heavy, glazed pastry sitting behind the glass. She was still caught in that hazy, hyper-aware feeling, her brain moving half a step behind.
“Yeah,” she murmured softly. “It looks really good. Maybe the strawberry one, too.”
“Next, please.” The voice of the cashier cut through the noise of the bakery.
Carmy stepped forward to the register, but he didn't drop his hands. They stayed right where they were, resting naturally on her hips, guiding her forward with him.
“Two coffees,” he told the woman behind the counter, his voice dropping into that flat, efficient kitchen cadence. He glanced sideways at Lisa, his eyes asking a silent question to check if that was what she wanted.
She gave a small nod.
He looked back at the cashier. “And two of the cinnamon buns. Plus the one with the strawberry on top, please.”
He didn't ask her to pick just one. He didn't make a big deal out of it. He just pulled out his card, handling it with an easy, casual domesticity she had never actually experienced with him before.
While the woman turned around to bag the pastries, Lisa just stood there, watching him. A soft, genuine smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.
Carmy put his card away and glanced down. He caught her looking.
A flicker of curiosity crossed his face. He looked slightly confused as to why she was smiling at him like that, but he didn't ask.
Instead, he just smiled back. It was a small, quiet thing, but it completely transformed his face. It erased the sharp, exhausted tension that usually lived around his eyes, making him look suddenly, strikingly younger.
It struck her suddenly that maybe this wasn't a new version of Carmy at all. Maybe it was simply the first time she'd been allowed to see this side of him.
They grabbed the brown paper bag and the coffees, heading back out into the cold April air toward his car.
The drive to her apartment was quiet. Not awkward. Just comfortable.
The heater blasted warm air through the vents while the city slid past outside the windows, gray and sleepy beneath the late-morning April sky.
About halfway there, Lisa's phone buzzed loudly from her purse.
She picked it up and immediately a burst of chaotic noise filled the car.
Children laughing. Pete's voice. Someone shrieking with delight.
Carmy glanced over.
“What is that?”
Lisa laughed.
“Sophie and Ben.” A grin spread across her face as she opened the video.“Nat just sent this.”
She tilted the screen toward him.
The footage was shaky and clearly filmed one-handed.
Ben and Sophie were racing around Natalie and Pete's living room in frantic circles while Pete made a dramatic attempt to catch them.
He failed spectacularly.
A quiet laugh escaped Carmy.
“Jesus.”
“I know.”
Lisa watched the video loop again.
Ben nearly ran into the couch. Sophie collapsed into a fit of laughter. Pete looked seconds away from surrendering completely.
The smile on her face softened. “They're so sweet together.”
Carmy glanced over briefly.
Lisa looked down at the screen. “I'm really happy he has her.”
The words came out quietly. Almost without thinking.
“He's never really had another kid around all the time before.” The video continued playing silently in her hand. “He has Sophie now.”
She looked up at Carmy.
“You know... a cousin.”
The meaning sat between them immediately. Much bigger than the video. Much bigger than two toddlers chasing each other around a couch.
Ben had family. People. Roots. A place to belong.
Carmy slowed to a stop at a red light.
For a moment, he didn't say anything. But Lisa wasn't surprised.
Some feelings seemed to short-circuit his ability to form complete sentences.
His jaw shifted slightly. Like he was searching for words and finding none he trusted enough to say out loud.
Then he looked over. And smiled. Small. Real. The kind of smile she saw only when he forgot to guard himself.
The light turned green. The car rolled forward.
Carmy's hand left the steering wheel. He reached across the center console and rested it on her thigh.
Warm. Steady. Like an answer.
Lisa looked down at it. Then back at him.
His attention had already returned to the road. As if he hadn't just said everything he wanted to say.
A strange ache settled quietly in her chest. Not painful. Just full.
She reached down and covered his hand with hers. Their fingers slipped together naturally. Neither of them said anything.
Carmy's thumb brushed once across her knuckles.
The corner of his mouth twitched.
And they drove the rest of the way to her apartment exactly like that.
---
Carmy barely had his finger off the doorbell before the front door swung open.
Pete stood there wearing a floral apron, holding a metal spatula like a weapon. He looked aggressively cheerful and slightly panicked.
“Hey! You made it. Come on in, don’t mind the—”
“Pete, the garlic is burning!” Natalie’s voice echoed sharply from the kitchen.
“It’s not burning, it’s toasting!” Pete yelled back over his shoulder, instantly abandoning them to rush toward the smoke billowing out of the hallway.
Lisa barely managed to get one arm out of her coat before two tiny bodies came barreling around the corner. Ben and Sophie were running in frantic, chaotic circles, shrieking at the top of their lungs.
Ben launched himself directly at Lisa’s legs, almost taking her out, before immediately bouncing off and crashing into Carmy’s shins.
Carmy didn’t flinch. A soft, genuine smile broke across his face as he reached down, catching the toddler under the armpits and hoisting him up into a warm, solid hug.
“Hey, buddy,” Carmy murmured, his voice dropping into that quiet, steady tone he always used with the kid. “How you doin’?”
Ben babbled something incomprehensible, gesturing to the living room, almost as if he was reporting what they did the whole morning. Lisa stepped closer, closing the physical gap between them to press a kiss to Ben’s cheek and smooth down his messy hair.
“Hi, baby. I missed you so much!”
For a second, they just stood there in the entryway. A perfect, insulated little unit.
“Come on in, come on in!”
Natalie appeared in the hallway, wiping her hands on a dish towel, her eyes instantly locking onto them. She didn't miss a beat.
“Hope you guys are hungry, ‘cause Pete made enough food for a small army,” Natalie said, her tone halfway between apologetic and exasperated.
She scooped Sophie up onto her hip and turned her management focus directly onto Carmy. “I’m taking Lisa and Ben to the living room. You go to the kitchen and help Pete with the chicken before he actually burns it.”
“It’s toasting!” Pete called out defensively. He popped his head around the corner. “But Carm, seriously, come taste this sauce.”
The divide-and-conquer strategy was executed flawlessly.
In the living room, the second the kids got distracted by the toy bin, Nat turned her laser focus entirely onto Lisa.
“So,” Natalie said, her voice dropping into a casual, conversational tone that Lisa immediately recognized as a trap. “How late were you guys out?”
“Not too late,” Lisa said evenly, sitting on the edge of the sofa.
“How was it? Did he behave?”
“It was fine, Nat,” she laughed softly. “And yes, Carmen behaved.”
“Did he actually speak? Or did he just stare at you intensely while you ate?”
Lisa recognized the eager, unyielding gleam in Natalie's eye. If she gave her nothing, Nat would just keep digging. She had to throw her a bone.
“Well,” Lisa started, leaning in conspiratorially. “We went to that nice place downtown. But they actually lost the reservation. So we ended up eating at a food truck by the river.”
Natalie’s eyebrows shot up. “Oh, a food truck? And he didn't have a total meltdown?”
“No,” Lisa smiled, a genuine rush of fondness hitting her at the memory of it. “He was great. It was really nice, Nat.”
Natalie stared at her for a long second, her eyes narrowing slightly as she took in the flushed, happy look on Lisa’s face.
“...I see,” Nat said slowly.
Before she could interrogate her about what happened after the food truck, Sophie aggressively threw a wooden block at Ben’s foot, resulting in an immediate, dramatic wail that required both of them to intervene.
Meanwhile, across the house, things were going significantly worse for Pete.
He flipped a piece of chicken in the pan, attempting to project a casual, one-of-the-guys energy as he glanced sideways at Carmy, who was staring blankly at the stove.
“So,” Pete said.
Carmy didn't even look at him. “Nope, we’re not doing this.”
Pete blinked. “Okay.”
A long beat of silence passed, filled only by the sizzling of the chicken.
“You know, I didn't actually ask anything,” Pete pointed out.
“You were gonna,” Carmy replied, deadpan.
Pete sighed, flipping another piece of chicken in defeat. “...fair.” He cleared his throat, pivoting instantly.
“Do you think this needs more lemon? I feel like it needs more lemon.”
Carmy finally looked down at the pan. “Yeah, Pete. Needs lemon.”
---
A few minutes later, everyone finally settled around the table.
Or at least as settled as anyone could be with two overtired toddlers involved.
Ben was wedged into his booster seat, already rubbing one eye between determined bites of chicken. Sophie sat across from him, kicking her legs against her chair and periodically announcing things nobody understood.
Pete immediately launched into a detailed explanation of whatever he had cooked.
"...and then I added parsley at the end because apparently that's what makes it restaurant quality."
Natalie snorted.
"That's not what he said."
"It is absolutely what he said."
"I just said it needed herbs," Carmy corrected.
Pete pointed a fork at him.
"Exactly."
"That's not the same thing."
"It is in spirit."
Lisa laughed into her water glass.
Across the table, Carmy's mouth twitched. Not quite a smile. But close.
The conversation drifted easily after that.
Pete talking.
Natalie correcting him.
Pete refusing to be corrected.
The toddlers contributing occasional nonsense.
The kind of family conversation that never really followed one topic long enough to become an actual discussion.
But at some point Lisa wasn't really listening anymore.
She was just... watching. Reflecting. Becoming entirely, overwhelmingly aware of what was happening right next to her.
Nobody was trying to create some perfect version of a family.
Nobody was pretending.
They were just... functioning.
And Carmy was everywhere.
Not in a loud, performative way. In the quiet margins.
She noticed it when he reached for the water pitcher, filling her glass before she even realized it was empty.
She noticed it when he took the salad bowl from Pete. He served her first, using the tongs with meticulous, practiced precision to push every single raw red onion to the side before putting the greens on her plate.
He didn't mention it. He didn't ask for credit. He just remembered.
When Ben babbled and pointed vaguely at the center of the table, Lisa didn't even have to translate. Carmy just understood. He grabbed the potatoes, cut them into perfect, toddler-sized squares, and slid them onto Ben's plate while Lisa wiped the kid's sticky hands and face.
For a little while, everything felt warm. Easy. Safe.
The exact kind of moment Lisa had spent years imagining.
Which was probably why it somehow scared her.
Because every time she looked around the table, she found more evidence that the version of Carmen she had been carrying around in her head no longer existed.
The man sitting beside her wasn't guarded.
Wasn't distant.
Wasn't waiting for the first opportunity to disappear.
He was arguing with Pete about lemon and parsley.
Rubbing sleepy circles against Ben's back.
Laughing at Sophie throwing broccoli onto the floor.
Present. Entirely present.
And Lisa didn't know what to do with that.
A loud smack interrupted her thoughts.
Everyone looked over.
Sophie was glaring furiously at the blue plastic cup in front of her.
"No."
Natalie sighed immediately.
"Oh boy."
"No!"
"Sophie—"
The cup flew. Water exploded across the table. The front of Sophie's shirt. The floor. Pete's lap.
For one stunned second, the room went completely silent.
Then Sophie burst into exhausted, furious tears.
"Oh, sweetheart," Natalie groaned, already pushing back her chair. "What did you do, Pete?"
Pete was up instantly.
"I gave her the blue cup."
"She asked for the green cup."
"But we don’t have a green cup," said Pete, exasperated.
And just like that, the lunch was over.
Sophie wailed louder, her face red and furious.
Natalie scooped her up, already moving toward the hallway. "Pete, grab her towel."
But Pete was completely frozen, staring at his soaked shirt and the ruined table with a look of pure, exasperated shock.
Carmy stood up. He grabbed the roll of paper towels from the sideboard.
"Yo, Pete," Carmy said, his voice cutting through the noise. Pete blinked, looking over. "It's okay. I got it. Go see if she needs help."
He exhaled a heavy breath, nodding once before rushing down the hall after Natalie.
The dining room suddenly felt massive. And empty.
But the panic had already transferred. Ben’s lower lip pushed out, trembling violently before he burst into heavy, sympathetic tears.
Lisa unbuckled the booster seat, pulling him tightly against her chest. "Shh, I know," she murmured, rocking him gently. "You're just tired, right, baby? It's okay."
It wasn't really calming him. He was too far gone.
Carmy threw the soaked paper towels onto a plate, effectively neutralizing the spill. He pulled his chair out and sat back down right next to them.
Ben immediately reached out, his tiny, wet hands grasping blindly toward his dad.
Carmy didn't hesitate. He took Ben from Lisa, settling the crying toddler heavily against his chest. He looked at Lisa, his eyebrows pulled together in genuine worry. "Should we... prepare a bottle for him, or something?"
"Yeah," Lisa said, letting out a breath. "Maybe you could take him to the living room? It's a bit calmer in there. I'll see what I can find in your sister's kitchen."
Carmy nodded, adjusting his hold on Ben as he stood up and headed for the quiet of the living room.
Lisa walked into the kitchen. The silence in there was a sharp contrast to the dining room a few moments ago. She opened the refrigerator, scanning the shelves.
A carton of milk sat on the second shelf behind a container of leftover pasta sauce.
"There it is."
Lisa glanced over her shoulder.
Natalie stepped into the kitchen, already looking slightly exhausted. A few strands of hair had escaped her ponytail, and there was a damp patch on the shoulder of her sweater from Sophie's tears.
"Well," Nat said with a sigh. "She is officially done."
Lisa laughed softly.
"Ben wasn't far behind."
"No kidding."
Natalie pulled open a drawer and handed her a small saucepan.
For a moment, they worked in comfortable silence.
The noise from the rest of the house had faded considerably. Somewhere down the hallway, Pete was attempting to negotiate with a screaming toddler. It wasn't going well.
Lisa poured the milk into the pan.
Natalie leaned back against the counter.
"You know," she said casually, "I used to spend a lot of time worrying about him."
Lisa looked up.
"Carmy?"
Nat snorted.
"Who else?"
A small smile tugged at Lisa's mouth.
Natalie stared down at the countertop for a second before shrugging.
"I still worry. He's my brother."
The milk began warming.
Lisa watched her carefully in the quiet of the kitchen.
Natalie wasn’t looking back. She pulled open another drawer, her hand sifting blindly through the clutter. It gave her an excuse not to make eye contact while she searched for the right words.
"For a while..." Nat hesitated, her hand stilling. "I don't know. It felt like he was always running from something."
She let out a heavy breath, rubbing the bridge of her nose.
"Or maybe he was just trying to punish himself all the time," she murmured, speaking more to the open drawer than to Lisa.
Her fingers finally closed around a spare pacifier. She pulled it out with a quiet sigh, shutting the drawer with her hip.
On the stove, the milk simmered softly.
"And do you know what's weird? I spent years trying to get him to show up," Nat said, her eyes fixed on the doorway leading to the living room. "For me. For the restaurant. For himself."
She let out a small, almost disbelieving laugh.
"Honestly, he was exhausting."
"Yeah, I can imagine," Lisa agreed.
Nat smiled, but it was heavy with relief. "And then you and Ben showed up. And suddenly... he just does."
A long pause hung in the warm kitchen.
"I don't know what happens next," Nat added softly, giving Lisa a small shrug. "And honestly, that's none of my business."
Nat stepped closer and touched Lisa's shoulder.
"But... Just know, I'm really glad you're here."
Her eyes returned to the living room.
"And for what it's worth..." She nodded toward the couch. "He is too."
Natalie turned and walked out of the kitchen with the pacifier in her hand.
Lisa didn't move.
She stood by the stove, her fingers lightly gripping the edge of the counter. The quiet hiss of the gas burner filled the silence, but Natalie’s words were settling over her, quiet and heavy.
He is too.
The bubbling of the milk, threatening to spill over the edge of the saucepan, snapped her back to reality.
Lisa exhaled a shaky breath. She quickly switched off the burner, pulling the pan from the heat and pouring the warm milk into the bottle.
When she reached the doorway to the living room, she stopped.
Carmy was sitting on the couch. Ben was curled against his chest, completely asleep. One of Carmy's arms was wrapped securely around him while the other rested across the back of the couch.
His head leaned back. His eyes were closed. Not asleep. Just resting. For once, not bracing for something. Not waiting for disaster. Just existing in the moment.
Lisa stood there. Watching them.
And for one dangerous second, she let herself imagine it. Not next week. Not next month. Years. Birthdays. School pickups. Family dinners. Ordinary mornings.
A life.
Everything she had spent so long teaching herself not to want.
But two years of muscle memory is a hard thing to break.
Right in the middle of all that warmth, a tiny, familiar prickle of anxiety started to creep in. A quiet whisper she couldn't completely shut out.
This is too perfect, the voice hummed. When does the other shoe drop?
