More Plastic Than Fish by 2050

Have you ever wondered how much plastic ends up in our world’s oceans? Many people neglect the fact that humans are destroying our oceans and killing ocean wildlife at the same time and their turning a blind eye to this issue. How would like to be told provided you consume fish and or other ocean life that you are consuming thousands if not millions of broken down plastic particles every time you consume a meal if this doesn’t alarm you, you may want to reconsider your thoughts. Evidently the world’s oceans are much larger than our homes we live in on land, imagine a dump truck full of plastic every minute of every day being dumped into your home with no care or repercussions for this action. Pre and post millennial generations will have to live with this harsh reality that one day we will not be able to consume ocean life anymore because of the negative effects it will impose on the human body due to us dumping plastic into the oceans. Studies conducted by various reputable organizations predict with the rate we are excelling at “there will be more plastic than fish by the year 2050 in our oceans”. Humans are the superior race of mankind and always will be over all animals, mammals and reptiles it is our duty to do our due diligence in protecting them enough to the point that they can procreate at a positive rate  so we can consume them at a later time for our desires and survival.

Fish are Seeking to Eat Plastic

Did you know that fish are actively seeking micro plastic as food? According to theguardian/environment “Fish may be actively seeking out plastic debris in the oceans as the tiny pieces appear to smell similar to their natural prey, new research suggests”. Reading that news article was astonishing the marine life are now thinking that small pieces of plastic is consumable. Throughout our lives we have come to a great discovery that fish and or other marine life is an amazing source for food and nutrition. We’ve been consuming different types of marine life for many plus years, and because there is tremendous amounts of pollution in are oceans the fish or other creatures are consuming these wasteful products. Knowing what the fish are consuming is absolutely disgusting, because we’re the ones eating the fish. The rate that we are advancing in terms of plastic pollution that are humans will no longer be able to indulge in this product of food. Fish inadvertently mistake plastic for food of their own not realizing they will eventually die as it gets logged in their digestive track and isn’t able to be processed as waste. This is a serious harsh reality that we human race has imposed on helpless and defend less creatures. We need to blame ourselves for this havoc we caused because each, and every day plastic pollution keeps on getting worst, more marine life not only fish are perishing, and there is no mean of the issue stopping within the near future. Seeing helpless sea creatures tangled in plastic bags, caught in fish nets, waste in their gills, and completely submerged in industrial rubble is emotionally disturbing, terrifying, and infuriating feeling.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

How do you recycle? According to greeneducationfoundation.org “thirty million tons of plastic waste generated in the US 2009, only seven percent was recovered for recycling”. Although many people don’t understand this problematic issue with our oceans there are outlets to stop an individual’s footprint on plastic waste usage. Examples of this may consist of instead of drinking water bottles use a canteen or a re-usable jug. Another example may be when you grocery shop use recycled bags made out of different materials as opposed to a plastic bag the grocery store has to offer, this will impose an initial upfront cost as these methods are a little more expensive than the original outcome. These examples are very small steps to making the world’s oceans cleaner and safer for humans to swim in and marine life to thrive in. These examples provided are examples that we live by personally and take very seriously; making the switch to these alternatives weren’t that difficult we found it rather simple. In participating in this action we felt it personally rewarding knowing that every day we do our part in eliminating plastic from our daily lives and interactions for the better sake for our oceans and marine life. Ultimately it is up to individual’s to proactively help and defuse this growing world renowned issue of plastic ending up in our oceans different methods will vary between individuals in relinquishing their pollution every little bit will help in our end goal as a society to preserve our world’s oceans and marine life. Each and every individual has the ability proactively help and defuse this growing world renowned issue of plastic ending up in our oceans. Morally individuals should have a greater sense of worth knowing they are proactively making a difference in saving marine life and our oceans purity.

What are larger food companies doing to contribute in reducing plastic waste? Through our investigation we concluded that corporation’s and companies such as McDonalds, Tim Horton’s and Starbucks have implemented a plan of action to reduce plastic usage on a large scale. Examples of this include getting rid of plastic cups completely and deferring the use of plastic straws and lids in light of using biodegradable earth friendly paper straws and lids. These are beneficial large steps into making the world’s oceans cleaner and safer. With these positive actions taken affect by these companies the general public will no longer have the opportunity to create more plastic pollution which is evident because it simply won’t be available to individuals purchasing products from these companies. Incentives could arise for these companies for their positive change in protecting the oceans future wellbeing; governments have been apart in this correction to plastic pollution for a few years. In 2015 a five cent charge per bag was issued in Ontario to deter the amount of plastic bags entering into circulation for the greater good for our oceans. In our opinion we found this method tremendously successful due to the fact that purchases of recycled products are steadily on the rise. Volunteer groups and organizations supporting the cleanup and dismemberment of plastic waste is a great way to meet new people, stay active and contribute to a wonderful cause. Oceans and marine life need us more than ever before, the effect of human actions on the world’s oceans have been terrible but with the support from you as an individual will make a significant difference.

A Plastic Ocean

Have you ever watched a show or documentary that opened your eyes? Excitement is an understatement the way we feel at this given moment everything is coming together smoothly, and we hope you enjoy it. Completing our blog has been difficult and confusing lately. The blog we started was supposed to go online so viewers can see how bad the plastic pollution is in our oceans. The weather has contributed in tremendous amount of difficulties on completing this blog. We’ve attempted to go to various lakes, streams, and ponds to verify how bad the pollution was but because of the server weather it held us back. The lakes, streams, and ponds were covered completely with ice, unfortunately we couldn’t see anything. Also provided that we don’t live near any oceans, we used a different alternative to check other bodies of water within are area. Trying to meet, and discuss this blog was frustrating, and it became a hassle as well because of the weather it pushed good amount of our time back. The blog is going to have reasonable amount of facts, data, and pictures it’s going to continuously keep you engaged, and focused on what your reading, and viewing. For additional information we watched a documentary called “A Plastic Ocean”, and it was beneficial to our knowledge, and understanding. The amount of information we received from the film has opened our eyes greatly because we both had no clue how much plastic was in the ocean, and how it can affect our lives drastically. Enough is enough we all can make this change, it’s time to clean up our oceans.
