I would actually like all of you to do me a big favor. I just found out about the Pearl’s and their disgusting excuse for a “parenting book” called “To Train Up A Child” which is almost literally, a step by step guide to abuse, and in 3 cases so far, murder children. The Pearl’s and their ministry...
All advice is not great advice. There are so many ways to have a healthy relationship with your child in which mutual respect exists. Physical abuse and neglect are never the answer. While it is sad that these things happen, spreading the word is the only way to decrease and hopefully eliminate terrible stories like this one... The Struggle is Real
Have you ever tried to get your kid ready for bed time? Asked them to pick up their toys? Then you understand the power struggles that follow.
What if I told you it didn't have to be a battle or even that it shouldn't be?
There are many ways to help manage these situations, but one very effective management technique is giving your child choices. Throughout their lives, they will be finding themselves and learning that they have control over their bodies. We do them a disservice by telling them they have no option other than to listen to us, but to stand up for what they believe and not let others push them around. In order to raise responsible independent children, we must give them the room to learn to be these things.
By giving them choices, you allow them to control their path. You limit their options and direct them in a way that benefits you both, but you don't encourage a power struggle. You also set them up to succeed. Power struggles are the application of pressure, which may cause your child to panic, while giving them choices removes this pressure. No matter which choice they make, they are capable of success.
An example of this would be asking if they want to put on their pajamas or brush their teeth first at bedtime. Both of these choices are correct because they both have to happen. Does the order really matter?

Teaching Children Respectful Interruptions
Recently, I was with a family friend and her kids. I noticed that the children run up and say "Mom," then she touches their arm and they wait while she finishes her thought or conversation.
While at home with my own family, my brothers ran up and continuously said "Mom Mom Mom." They did not stop until she stopped mid sentence and acknowledged them.
The distinct difference here is that the parent who was given time to complete their thought and then answer her child was much less frustrated with the interaction. She was far more relaxed and was not preoccupied during EITHER interaction (conversation/answering her child).
I called to ask how she established the routine and I was pretty surprised to find that it was actually something I had read about before and forgotten. What she encourages her child to do is say her name once, then patiently wait until she finishes her thought so that she can answer them. In order to assure them she has heard them, the mother reaches out and touches the child.
This simple step has completely changed this mother's relationship with her children.

There are some facts I bet you didn't know about schools around the United States. Check with your child's school to find out what the policies are about things like restraining the child and what consequences or punishments are "acceptable" for use!
From a Teacher's View
A dear friend and mentor in my life has started her own blog. She has been a teacher for quite a while. Currently, she teaches AP Literature and is the department chair within a Georgia high school. I can personally say she teaches teenagers about far more than just literature and I was very lucky to have had her as a teacher and now as a friend.
