A random guy paid me a compliment and why it was okay

So, in starbucks today, a random guy came up to my and told me I was very pretty and nice eyes.

And, as a feminist, I was okay with it.

Because he did it correctly.

He stood four feet away from me and started out with “excuse me” and waited until I nodded before approaching. He then introduced himself and we shook hands and then he gave a compliment and went on his way.

He didnt catcall. He didnt harass. He didnt use inappropriate language. He asked for permission.

Take note, gentlemen.

To the morons that say it can’t be done. Mmhmm… We aren’t saying we don’t like compliments. We’re saying we don’t like being harressed, we don’t like being cat-called, we don’t like to be treated like we’re an object…

A very nice veteran and I had a nice conversation before I went into the store to do my shopping (he was selling things for a veteran charity), and when I came out he gave me a faux rose and told me how it made his day to talk to a very nice and pretty young lady. This my dears is a gentleman. This made my day. I still have this flower about four years later. DO IT RIGHT.

What triggers my anger is when that person who happens to be a female says: “I don’t need feminism. I don’t need to be liberated.”

How about you tell that to:

that Moroccan girl who killed herself after being forcibly married to her rapist (x)

that 11-year-old Texan girl who got raped by 18 men while the New York Times said she “dressed older than her age.” (x)

Reyhaneh Jabari, an Iranian woman who was tortured in jail then hanged after killing the man who was going to rape her. (x)

Nojood Al-Ali from Yemen who got divorced when she was 10. (x)

the 16-year-old girl from Ohio who got raped and filmed at a party by 2 boys, while CNN reporters talked about the bright futures of the rapists as athletes. (x)

the 94 women in Jordan who were legally married to their rapists, only in 2014. (x)

the 8-year-old girl who was married to a man 5 times her age, and died on the day of her wedding because she suffered from bleeding and uterine rupture after intercourse. (x)

the 25 Palestinian women who were killed by either their brother or father, in order to “protect their honor” only in 2013. (x)

the 99% of Egyptian women and 90% of Yemeni women who have experienced sexual harassment (x) (x)

I’m tired of people romanticizing overexertion. Exhausted is not the new chic, coffee (though a delicious necessity) is not a food group, and running on fumes is not admirable. Why do we hold pedestals for sleepless nights, breakdowns, and inner turmoil? Are those really things to aspire to? Self-care. Balance. The ability to know when your body, mind, and spirit need to take a step back. Those are things we should admire. We have to stop blurring the line between ‘commitment’ and self-endangerment because too many people are burning out before they have a chance to truly shine.
