Today is Independence day, and I celebrated by writing a song about loving someone who is depressed.  I had some help from my friend Katie 

   Inconsolable love of mine                                                                                 Cast iron fears in her life                                                                                   And nothing dries the tears she cried                                                                     Oh inconsolable love of mine           

  I tell her it’s alright                                                                                                   I take her for a drive                                                                                             in my car

First Ever Tape 01

On the road to 3 Elliot studios to make a record. I find the weather fits the mood that I feel for our music. It is raining, and the sky is a dark blue. So much preparation has gone into these next few days and yet I can't help but feel somehow underprepared. I know well make it happen... Whatever it takes. I will keep you all posted on our progress in the coming days.

Being sick completely wiped me out for three days.  It’s amazing how we are reduced to next to nothing without our health, and yet we take that for granted so often.  I’m back though, and I’m more determined than ever to finish writing and start recording our album.  Side-note: while I was sick I started playing FEZ, and I absolutely love it.  It’s pretty common that I will pick up a new video-game or TV series after being sick.

We have a show at the Newport tomorrow.  Knowing that and reflecting on it is strange.  It’s the same feeling I had when I knew we were going to play Comfest for the first time.  We’ve been fighting to get to this point for so long, and now that we’re here it doesn’t seem real to me.  I don’t know how to be excited enough.  I’ve never been the type of person who will jump for joy for much... I guess I just think moments like this deserve more of a reaction.  I’m so grateful that we get to go up on that stage.  Even if I don’t show it, please understand that I don’t take these opportunities lightly.

Lying in bed late a night thinking about what I’m going to say between songs tomorrow.  If I have an identity, or if I just pretend to be something I’m not.  Maybe I’ll tell people what Emerald song is about… maybe I’ll ask the audience, “are there any questions?”, and if someone raises their hand I’ll call on them.  Who cares?  In the words of Belle and Sebastian, “all that I wanted was to sing the saddest songs, and if somebody sings along I will be happy”.  Beautiful… I love that song, and that album.  There’s a coffee shop in Columbus named after a song on that album.  Not the one I quoted though.  A different song.  I wonder if Belle and Sebastian are witty and charismatic on stage.  Something tells me they just play the music, and every once and a while tell stories of their time on the road.  I don’t feel like I do any less than that.
