“SCREENING” is a crossover project by Sigrid Calon & Willem van Zoetendaal. Since their first meeting at the Best Dutch Book Designs 2012 Calon & Van Zoetendaal started a collaboration in exchanging their specific skills in design and printing. They started to produce limited editions of artist books, posters a.o. about the relationship between patterns and portraits printed in risography on offset. The first series of experiments, “SCREENING 1” and “SCREENING 2” consist of studio portraits from the early eighties by Lee To Sang. These portraits, negatives selected from the Van Zoetendaal Archives are printed in offset. Sigrid Calon designed layers of colour patterns on top of the ‘models’ in risographic printing.
Launch at Offprint London, Turbinehall in Tate Modern: May 22-25, 2015 www.tate.org.uk | offprintlondon.com
Dutch artist Sigrid Calon builds her language out of pure and geometric pattern, interlacing graphics on every media, in any possible combination. After an academic education and a design debut, she established herself as a visual artist; her work (almost ten- year) is a continuous compositive exploration, conceptually complex, but always aesthetically minimal, and often ironic. Her imaginary starts from the fascination for abstract embroidery: essence and search for identity emerge in various combinations, on multiple dimensional scales and often site-specifically. A creative process of perpetual reformulation, where the stylistic coordinates are arranged, moved, challenged to materialize in the container that will host them, whether it be a square meter of fabric or the facade of a building. Her recent interest is in publishing, which finds fulfillment in the publication of “To the extend of / | & - Within the grid and beyond the pattern”: the book , in parallel to the bidimension with Kaleid EditionsYoung Illustrators Award, brought her from Artbookfair of Basel, London, Berlin, Milan to institutions such as MoMA and the Victoria & Albert Museum founding considerable interest in the sector. Willem van Zoetendaal is a graphic designer who has been producing photography books since the early nineties. In 1994 he started publishing his own books. In the same period, Van Zoetendaal curated photography exhibitions in the Netherlands as well in Italy, France, Japan and Korea. Additionally, Van Zoetendaal has been active as a gallery owner for contemporary photography from 2000 until 2014. February 2014 he changed his gallery space into a studio to develop his own art projects, art books and installations. Together with Noshka van der Lely, Van Zoetendaal manages the estate of filmmaker/photographer Johan van der Keuken and the photo archives of former studio photographer Lee To Sang. Van Zoetendaal considers his books as spacious contstructions in which the viewers are left to find their own way. He has been extremely influential in terms of the selection and montage of the content of the books, enabling a rhythmic melody to be formed in unison with the design.
