Need to find a more detailed accounting of it but the development of distinctive "tribes"/"ethnicities" in Ethiopia is 100% definitely downstream of European 19th century nationalism and much like in other large complex empires identity had previously been largely regional, religious, and linguistic to a lesser extent. Like the reason Tigrayans can claim thousands of years of identity (supposedly) is bc its literally a regional identity that was developed into a 'national' identity in the Memelik II period. Amhara seems to have been a much less cohesive identity and sounds like it was more of a language than an ethnicity, with regional differences defining people's identities (to this day people will often identify as a 'Gondare' before calling themselves Amharas) and the concept of 'amhara culture' was basically invented by the Menelik II court based on Gondare peasant culture much in the same way Turkish culture was invented by Turkish nationalist intellectuals in the late ottoman period based on rural anatolian turkmen farmer culture. Im not gonna get too detailed into Oromo but they are essentially a small tribe from the Kenyan border near Lake Omo who took advantage of a power vacuum in the 1500s to conquer and assimilate a whole fuckton of somali, nilotic, etc tribes in the south and center if the country. Most of the southern ethnicities are either descendants of old kingdoms (welayta, etc) or small regional identities or like, wandering pastoral groups and stuff. Like not really modern 'nation' 'ethnicity' its just been transmute into that. And ofc none of us were calling ourselves Ethiopian or Eritrean until recently, although I dont thinknthats justification to abandon those identities and names entirely.
