voices' & vessels' name headcanons!!
post-game, "leave with stranger" ending!!
(quick note, i'll only be doing the 2nd chapter princesses, because in my au, all of the chapter 2 princesses have memories from every possible outcome of their route, including their chapter 3s. (though most of them don't actively remember being in the construct at all.))
PHOENIX (Hero) - I imagine he took a good while to even think of picking a new name, but in the end, he went with a pretty poetic choice; a mythological symbol of new beginnings & life after death. Also, it's a very heroic-sounding name.
ISAAC (Contrarian) - You can imagine how surprised Phoenix was when the biggest jokester he knows came out with a name that's... actually very normal. It means "one who laughs or rejoices." (I do think he secretly has 10 names, one for each letter of the word "CONTRARIAN", Isaac is just the only normal one. But he won't tell Phoenix that.)
ARTHUR (Skeptic) - A more rough & older-sounding name to fit Skeptic's more gruff vibe. Inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, as well as the prevalence of fictional detectives named Arthur (though that could just be my personal Malevolent Podcast bias.)
CORDELIA (Prisoner) - I actually stumbled upon this one's meaning by accident while trying to name an OC; it means "daughter of the sea", which (loosely) fits the Drowned Grey, plus it sounds very posh and regal.
FLORIAN (Smitten) - This is one of the first ones I thought of; the meaning is "flowering, blooming", which fits his more flowery vocabulary, but I mainly picked it for the vibes. When I sound it out, it just sounds perfect for Smitten.
ELOISE (Damsel) - Kind of like Smitten, I mainly picked it for the vibes it conjures, of sweetness & innocence. Also, apparently one of its meanings is "famous warrior," and I think that is both extremely funny and gives me potential ideas for the AU. Just you wait til Damsel goes on her knight arc.
PAVOR (Paranoid) - This is one I'm kinda unsure about. Pav, short for Pavor, the Latin word for panic. Simple, short, to the point. Another option was Pan, named after the greek god associated with, among other things, protection & panic.
CHARLOTTE (Nightmare) - I've always considered Charlotte to be a deceptively cute yet spooky name, which is perfect for Nightmare. I imagine her using cutesy nicknames like Char-Char or Lottie while actively shutting someone's organs down. Also, its meaning of "free man" is deeply ironic & a little sad.
CAIN (Cold) - Not a very original choice for Cold by any stretch of the imagination (lol), but hey, it fits him! Especially because of the whole "the first killer" association. I also considered Edgar because Cold strikes me as a gothic name-haver. Cain Edgar, maybe?
OLIVE (Spectre) - The literal meaning of the name is "olive tree", but it has an association with peace and forgiveness. And the phrase "to extend an olive branch," meaning to extend a peace offering; it fits the Spectre -> PatD path that the AU takes.
OUTIS (Opportunist) - You can't convince me that Opportunist wouldn't be the type to trick a cyclops by saying his name is Nobody. Granted, he's also an awful liar, so that's really where the similarities between him and cap'n king Odysseus end.
WINIFRED (Witch) - Aside from being the name of one of the most famous witches in media, I just think Winifred fits the Witch perfectly. Just sound it out. Winifred. Winnie, for whenever Outis wants to annoy her with nicknames. It's perfect.
WREN (Hunted) - I swear I've seen this one used for Hunted before, I just don't remember where. Either way, it really does fit him; a small bird, typically prey for any animal bigger than it.
KHIMAIRA (Beast) - I... I have no excuses for this one. In the AU, I don't think Beast would pick a name at all, I think this is just what the local townsfolk call her. I just saw a different spelling of Chimera and went "aight, sure." I am no better than the moms who name their sons "Cayiden" and their daughters "Ashleighegh". I apologize. (/j)
HECTOR (Stubborn) - It's a tough-sounding name with the meaning "steadfast, to hold", which pretty accurately describes Stubborn & his fighting style. Also, Hector of Troy, war hero known for his bravery, yada yada, my Epic obsession is bleeding through some of these names, I swear.
IMELDA (Adversary) - I struggled a lot with this one, mainly not to just pick something just because it starts with "Ad" or "Av". That's been a struggle for all of these, but especially here. I went with Imelda, which means "warrior."
ELIJAH (Broken) - Another one I'm not too sure about! It's a name with strong religious connotations, but it also symbolizes hope and redemption, which fits Broken's little arc in Apotheosis. (How the most recent Tower route ended in this AU.)
AMBROSE (Tower) - I almost named her Hera, but decided it was too on the nose lol. Instead I went with a name that means "Immortal", and gives off the vibes of someone very very powerful and revered.
KADE (Cheated) - ... Honestly, Cheated's the one I named last & put the least thought into. I just think he'd have a more modern-sounding name, even in a medieval time period. The spelling was originally "Cade", meaning "round" which is somewhat of a contrast to Razor's sharpness, but I changed it to Kade because, well... Cade & Cain. I kept confusing myself lol.
LACEY (Razor) - It's a sweet, innocent name for a sweet, innocent girl :) But really, it's one of those "sharp" sounding names, and one of its meanings is "cheerful", and Razor is very cheerful.
STRANGER & QUIET - Going off of the Strange Beginnings ending, I think Stranger doesn't mind being called Stranger! They & Quiet aren't really a big part of this AU at the moment, I don't even know where they are or what they're up to while all the voices & vessels are running around like chickens with their heads cut off, lol.
ATLAS (The Narrator) - He was mortal, no? He had to have also had a name, at some point. And I think Atlas is a painfully fitting one; with a literal meaning of "enduring, to endure", the association to the titan Atlas responsible for bearing the weight of the heavens on his shoulders, and that one tumblr post that goes; "The weight of the story is hard to bear, but someone has to be Atlas."
(sidenote, i imagine most, if not all, of the voices/vessels picked their names entirely unaware of any meanings behind them, because some of these names make no sense in-universe lol.)
