Was he always this selfless? She figured he must be. Because after all of the time that had passed, and given her physical state, he should be more inclined to dislike her. Be impatient, at the very least. But he kissed her head and he gently tugged her up to look at his face, and he offered to coddle her, take care of her, do everything he could to make her feel better, instead of himself.
She looked at him through her thick, bleary tears, but she could still see his smile. Something felt heavy and soft in her heart, but she didn’t know how to recognize it yet.
“S-Selig…” Emmeryn sniffled. But she nodded. If he wanted to take care of her, maybe it would make him feel better, in a way. Maybe he was the kind of person who healed himself by healing others. And right now… they both needed healing.
“Okay–” she said, her voice breaking as another small sob shook through her. “I… j-just want us to b-b-e–”
His smile is gentle and patient as he lifts a hand to brush the tears from her cheek in a soft caress. “I know, my darling.”
The road ahead is surely going to be long and riddled with rocks and stones and all sorts of obstacles, but he would much rather traverse it than live the rest of his life without her in Hyrule, his wedding ring tucked away where he won’t be tempted to take it out and look at it.
“I don’t want you to push yourself for my sake. And though I...” Selig hesitates a moment, unsure if this admission is wise. But their relationship was built on a steady foundation of trust and honesty. He doesn’t want to ruin that now. “I want nothing more than to be your husband in every way, I could never forgive myself if I did something to hinder your recovery or make you uncomfortable.”
