Astro Needs to Stop
Everyone is a visual. Everyone is a sweetheart. Just utter perfection. Like how am I supposed to have a bias when everyone is so amazing. Like, first it was Rocky cause that smile kills. Then I saw Sanha and was like “Oh baby, this boy is adorable.” But when I saw Moonbin and Eunwoo those boys just… no words. And Mj is so bubbly and his laugh is so contagious. And how can you not when JinJin is just over over there with his cuteness and deep voice. Just.. How. Do. You. Bias?

Problems of being a kdrama fan..
• You are emotionally and physically affected by scenes in the drama. • There are times when a drama finishes as well as your life because it was just that good. • Your friends will think you’re speaking gibberish, but you are actually just repeating your favourite line from last nights episode. • To my fellas who needs subs to understand everything, we all know that annoying feeling when we think the subbed version has came out already, but in reality it still hasn’t. • We all plan out what dramas to watch in order depending on what feelings it’ll give you. I end up my day watching WFKBJ once cause The Legend of the Blue Sea’s episode was depressing. • We will scream our hearts out whenever we see new still cuts or episode scenes from new episode you still haven’t seen. • We always have a “Need to watch” dramas, but we never get to watch them cause we’re just too attached to the current drama we’re watching. • We know that after happy scenes that’s been showing for 3 minutes, depressing scenes will come after. • You’ll find every oppa in each drama you watch hot, and be immediately be married to them. (one of the greatest problem in all human history.) There’s so much oppas to love that it hurts the brain but a pleasure to the heart. • You cry on each drama OST you hear. Even if it’s a happy song, it just brings so much memories. • We’ve all had hated the lead females. And how they are so perfect and pretty. Like why Song Hye Kyo? • You’ll watch specific variety show episodes you’ve never watched just because of your favourite actor/actress being a guess. • The depressing dramas will affect your life. • The happy ones will make you smile out of nowhere. • Lines by oppa are too cringe worthy but yet you still love it. • We’re all busy, each day new episodes of dramas we watch come out. (Honestly one of the reasons I wake up in the morning. Specially on Mondays just to see Park Seo Joon.) • You always change your wall paper depending on what oppa you want to see that day. • Once you’ve become a kdrama addict, there’s no way back.
• Second lead syndrome is just too real. • Age for an oppa doesn’t matter. They’re all be looking like they’re 26 even though they’re 50 ~.~

HOW TO TEACH YOURSELF LANGUAGES SUPER EFFICIENTLY
I write this bcz I’m a huge language enthusiast and I’m frustrated about the way most methods and language classes/courses approach the process of learning. I’m not a professional but I have a lot of experience in studying foreign languages: I have taught myself Lithuanian and reached the upper intermediate level (B2) in 4-5 years without much help from others, and in Spanish reaching the same level took me only 2 years bcz I simultaneously studied it at school and already knowing French helped me a little. I want to help everyone who wants to start a new language, does not have the possibility to join a language course or just feels frustrated of the stagnation they might experience in the early phase of learning a foreign language.
So, if you want to learn a new language, I suggest following tips:
• Immerse yourself from the beginning! This is really important so that you can get yourself familiar with the intonation and pronunciation of the language. Listen to radio or tv and try to read whatever you can (ingredient lists from the food packages, newspaper articles, whatever!) it doesn’t matter if you can’t understand much yet, it will come! If you start a language with a new alphabet learn the alphabet really well first thing.
• Get an overview of the grammatical structure of the language! This is often not properly done in language courses where you learn some vocabulary and greetings but after 60 pages of the textbook you still have no idea how many verb tenses or noun cases the language has. Take a look even at the “hardest” topics, bcz they might not be that hard after all. (for example the Spanish equivalent of past perfect is much easier than the present tense)
• With that being said, learn to recognise past tenses even when you are still learning the present tense! I find it absurd that most courses expect you to master present tense _perfectly_ before even taking a look at other tenses. Most of the time, in everyday communication, past tenses are used more frequently than the present tense + in some languages mastering the past tense can also help you to form the conditional. So, learn the past tense earlier than most ppl would recommend!
• In general, study the easiest things first! If you find something particularly difficult you gain more confidence and knowledge if you first focus on what you find more interesting (however, you can’t postpone studying boring topics eternally, especially if you are preparing or hoping to prepare for an exam at some point) In Lithuanian, I taught myself a lot of grammar before learning how to tell the time… and it was ok.
• For material: usually the country’s universities have a reading list on their website which proposes what books one could use to study the language. These are often preferable to handbooks aimed for tourists and some language methods for beginners because those mostly focus on useless vocabulary you might only need when you rent a car or book a room in a hotel. The grammar is often also relatively poorly explained in those “tourist language books”, whereas books that are aimed at immigrants or university students usually focus more on the efficient language acquisition and are written by professors and specialists. If you are persistent enough and google all possible search words in both English and the target language, you can probably find whole textbooks in PDF format, which you can then save on your laptop.
• Don’t get stuck on vocabulary! Remember that grammar is the skeleton of the language and that vocabulary is the muscles hair and eventually the clothes you use to dress up and embellish your apperance. Vocabulary is useful once you know how to use it. For me, learning vocab is the hardest part of a new language, especially bcz I like starting languages that are not really similar to any other languages I know (consider Lithuanian and Greek when I previously knew Finnish, English, French and Spanish) ofc you need to learn some of it to be able to form sentences but most traditional methods focus on that too much. My suggestion is to read a lot: start by children’s books and comics and gradually get more advanced material. When you read them, make notes!! Look up the words you don’t know and don’t be afraid of using unconventional, seemingly challenging ways to learn, such as buying a bilingual poetry collection and trying to decipher what the original poem says and compare it to the translation. 100% recommend, even for the beginner level + it’s a nice way to connect to the culture but still focus on the language itself, not on the way ppl make breakfast in that country. (That’s something that irritates me a lot in most Youtube’s language videos where ppl are just discussing the traditions of the country in English when you had come there to look for the explanation of grammatical structures or just to hear the language being spoken. smh.)
• A really important thing about vocabulary is to learn all the abstract words, such as conjunctions, really soon! For example, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to use the words therefore and otherwise, it is almost impossible to try to explain those words without first translating them to another language.
• Make vocabulary learning more interesting and deep by learning about the etymology of the words you learn. It can be mind-blowing and it helps you to remember the words better.
That’s it!
I hope these tips inspire you in pursuing your interest in foreign languages and facilitate your learning process. I might add more to this if I remember I have forgotten something of great importance.

WHY IS IT SO IMPRESSIVE THAT ASTRO WON THE HALLYU SPECIAL AWARD AT THE 26TH SEOUL MUSIC AWARDS? article by Ani || 17.01.19
For anybody who is confused as to why or how ASTRO won the Hallyu Special Award and not a Best New Artist award at the Seoul Music Awards, or for anybody who is unsure of what the Hallyu Special Award even means and why it’s so impressive, let me explain! I believe that this award should not be overlooked despite not being a rookie award.
The Hallyu Special Award
Hallyu Special Award is awarded to the performer who gained popularity around the world during the year.
(Source: SMA wikipedia)
Unlike other categories that factor in album sales and judges voting, the Hallyu Special Award is based purely on voting of overseas fans. (Source: SMA website, mobile voting page). In addition, all groups nominated for any category in Seoul Music Awards are eligible to win the Hallyu Special Award.
Thus, the Hallyu Special Award is one of the awards that is directly decided by overseas fans. Of course, voting on the SMA mobile app was not available to both android and apple users at the same time, and even the ‘free’ votes in SMA still required you to complete offers in order to vote, but this was a barrier for all fans that were voting. The fact that ASTRO received such an award means that out of all of the overseas fans voting, ASTRO received the most votes.
Furthermore, ASTRO was not only up against rookie groups to win this award, but all of the artists that had been nominated. This is not to say ASTRO has more fans than the other groups, but rather that overseas AROHA proved, against crazy odds, to be extremely dedicated and determined to constantly vote for ASTRO.
Here are the TOP 10 results of the overseas voting on the SMA mobile app: (Source: SMTOWN Engsub, as only the TOP 3 remain listed on the SMA site)
ASTRO (32.27%)
BTS (32.07)
EXO (31.30%)
GOT7 (2.17%)
INFINITE (0.40%)
VIXX (0.31%)
SHINee (0.26%)
CLC (0.21%)
iKON (0.19%)
Eunji / B.A.P. (0.11%)
From these numbers, it’s clear that overseas fans voted mostly for ASTRO, BTS, and EXO; roughly 1/3 of the votes went to ASTRO, BTS, or EXO. For EXO and BTS, we have seen their huge followings from around the world. Both groups have been releasing music for a couple of years, and have performed global tours. However, ASTRO has only recently debuted and has only held overseas concerts of their own in 2 countries, Indonesia (Source: kpopmap) and Japan (Source: allkpop). While some may try to overlook the impressiveness of this achievement, the amount of worldwide support for ASTRO is huge, not only as a rookie group, but as a kpop group overall.
It should also be noted that for the group with most votes domestically in Korea, ASTRO did not even reach the top 15.
Here are the TOP 10 results of the domestic voting on the SMA mobile app: (Source: SMTOWN Engsub, as only the TOP 3 remain listed on the SMA site)
SHINee (46.84%)
EXO (26.81%)
BTS (11.24%)
INFINITE (2.89%)
VIXX (1.81%)
SechKies (1.54%)
BTOB (1.12%)
SEVENTEEN (1.09%)
TWICE (0.71%)
GOT7 (0.62%)
Out of all of the groups nominated for SMA, ASTRO gained nowhere near the amount of domestic votes as other groups. Of the top 7 groups for most overseas votes, 6 of them were also in the top 10 for domestic voting. ASTRO was the only one of those 7 groups to not make the top 10 in domestic voting yet they still received the most overseas votes.
Why is this so impressive?
Typically this award is most likely viewed as an award won by seasoned groups with lots of fans, because more seasoned groups have more overseas fans, and more overseas fans = more overseas votes. It makes sense, the longer a group is active, the more overseas fans it is likely they have gained. The more popular the group is worldwide, the more likely overseas fans have voted.
Past Winners of Hallyu Special Award in the past 8 years (Source: SMA wiki) *# years active is based on debut year to the year they won the Hallyu Award
2016: EXO - years active = 5, # other SMA awards that year = 2
2015: INFINITE - # years active = 5, # other SMA awards that year = 1
2014: SHINee - # years active = 6, # other SMA awards that year = 2
2013: Super Junior- # years active = 8, # other SMA awards that yr = 1
2012: KARA - # years active = 5, # other SMA awards that year = 1
2011: SNSD - # years active = 4, # other SMA awards that year = 3
2010: Super Junior - # years active = 5, # other SMA awards that yr = 2
2009: SS501 - # years active = 4, # other SMA awards that year = 1
Compare this to ASTRO’s stats:
2017: ASTRO - years active = 1, # other SMA awards that year = 0
If you look purely at the number of years active and the other awards the groups won the year they won the Hallyu Special Award, it’s absolutely mind blowing that ASTRO, a rookie group that has not even had their first anniversary and did not receive any other SMA awards, won the award for most popular overseas.
The Best New Artist Award
Although NCT placed 1st in domestic voting for Rookies, and ASTRO placed 2nd, according to the numbers, both NCT and ASTRO received 39.63% of the overseas votes. The margin that put NCT ahead of ASTRO in domestic voting was likely so small that both numbers rounded to the nearest hundreth were the same value.
Many are wondering how it’s possible that ASTRO ranked 1st in overseas voting and 2nd in domestic voting, and still not win Best New Artist.
The reason is the Best New Artist award for SMA is not based purely on fan votes; there were a variety of factors that went into scoring. 15% was domestic voting on the mobile app, 15% was overseas voting on the mobile app, 30% was judges scoring, and 40% was album sales. (Source: SMA website, mobile voting page + SMA wikipedia). For the same reason ASTRO was unable to obtain a rookie award at the Golden Disc Awards despite their lead in the fan voting is likely the same reason ASTRO was unable to obtain the rookie of the year award at SMA: their album sales. The winners of rookie awards this year had much higher album sales for their debut albums than ASTRO.
Why is this so important? What does it all mean?
I have seen many AROHA sad that ASTRO did not receive a Best New Artist award at SMA because ASTRO really wanted a rookie award and campaigned so hard to win. ASTRO did not miss a single day of reminding AROHA to vote ASTRO for GDA + SMA. The reason they had their sights set on the rookie award is because for rookies, that’s really the only possible award to win. Rookies are not usually nominated for awards or categories other than rookie awards. This award is not an award won by rookies.
If I were to ask you “which group do you think received the most amount of overseas votes overall for the seoul music awards” and you had yet to see these results, I can guarantee you would not have answered ASTRO, and would’ve probably guessed EXO, BTS, or SHINee.
I believe this recognition implies two things about ASTRO as a group:
Potential for overseas performances - through receiving this award, it has been shown that ASTRO are likely to be well received in other countries. As of right now, they have held concerts in Indonesia and Japan, as well as performed in the Philippines for Show Champion in Manila and in the USA for KCONLA. Currently there are 4 more overseas concerts on their schedule for Spring 2017: Thailand, Taiwan, China (Hong Kong), and Singapore.
Dedicated fanbase - it is not very likely that there were more overseas fans voting for ASTRO than for EXO and BTS, simply because EXO and BTS have exponentially more overseas fans than ASTRO. However, in order to amassed the amounts of votes ASTRO did, overseas fans were probably extremely dedicated in voting as much as they could every day for ASTRO. (this may also have been thanks to ASTRO’s consistent encouragement and reminders to vote!)
To those who would say “oh but this is only the Seoul Music Awards, it can’t reflect everyone’s opinion”, I would tell you yes, you are right. It does not reflect everyone’s opinion. However the results of overseas fan voting reflects the opinion of every person outside Korea who voted for this award. GDA, SMA, and MAMA are some of the biggest and most well known music awards in Korea.
And to me, and hopefully now to you, this is huge.
i screamed a little watching Seventeen’s Choreo video for Highlight because the whole thing is gold but then there was this one move i was in love with and i was trying to figure out why and then it hit me
