what they don't tell you about hadestown is that orpheus and eurydice are not the main characters. neither are persephone and hades. or hermes. or the fates. the main character is whoever in the band is playing the trombone because holy fuck

i love lady bird on the whole but the ending pisses me off. the entire movie, lady bird insists that her name is lady bird. it is shown to be an integral part of her identity and sense of self. the only time we see her introduce herself by her birth name is when she tells a hot guy at a party that she's christine from san fransisco because she's trying to seem cool and mature. that scene seems to reinforce something that has already been established: lady bird from sacramento is who she really is deep down. calling herself christine is just as disingenuous to her as saying she's from san fransisco.

then we get to the end, where she calls her parents and calls herself christine in a way that implies she's reverting back to going by christine indefinitely.

whether it was intended to be or not, the final message message of the movie reads as this: maturing looks like letting go of all the parts of you that are weird and wonderful and strange in the name of making peace with people who have repeatedly shown that they dislike you for fundamental aspects of who you are as a person.

or, as my best friend put it, "oh saorise ronan if only your characters could go on beautiful arcs of self determination and reclaiming autonomy through unconventional means without the burden of becoming palatable to popular culture by the end of the movie."

if you’re so stressed that you’re puking your guts up every morning, are unable to eat or keep anything down, you can’t look at light without feeling infinitely worse and feel exhausted and in pain all the time (or whatever your particular stress induced symptom set is) you’re not just feeling like that because you’ve willed it into being. your body is begging for relief from the constant barrage of stress hormones and it requires the fundamental source of stress to go away, not just distracting yourself from the symptoms

just because the root is psychological doesn’t mean the result isn’t an entirely physical process.
