I’m at my dog sitting job in a pretty old countryside farm and the lady who does the cleaning up here told me this morning that there are old tunnels (now closed up) running from the house to the church (1km) and I did not want to know that
Imagine what could come from there? Ghouls, ghosts, vampires?

the fact cranberry bogs are in wisconsin and not new england makes me so fucking mad
i don’t even know how a cranberry bogs works. i know how a bog works. i know how a swamp works. i love swamps. i got a few just a few minutes from the house. i’ve been to lots of swamps in my day, but never a bog. but i don’t know why cranberries gotta be grown in a bog in wisconsin. does new england not have cranberry friendly bogs? do they not have bogs at all?
the only new england wetland i’m familiar is hockomock swamp in massachusetts and lemme tell ya boys, that’s a real nice swamp. i saw a crawdad and climbed a big rock.
Hi! HIIIII!!! I live in New England and YEAH WE GOT CRANBERRY BOGS!! My cousins live right near one!
Ok so. The bogs. They’re not wet or boggy all the time. But see, cranberries float. So they’re REALLY easy to harvest via a “wet harvesting” approach. Some are harvested dry, that is, by just using a tool that looks like a comb to just. Uh. Comb them off the vine. But the rest? You just flood the bog, stir it up with giant eggbeaters to loosen the berries off the vine, and voila! Cranberries floating on the surface! Then you skim them off. Done. You drain the bog before next year’s crop and start growing again.
Highly, highly recommend perusing the Massachusetts Cranberry website. You can even tour these things! If you go in fall, some of them will give you waders and a big skimmer implement and you can try it yourself! Plus, most of the cranberries in the country are produced on family-owned farms.
(Feel free to DM for more info. I may or may not have once spent a fortnight studying the operations of a cranberry processing facility and how this related to the cranberry farmers’ consortium.)
