currently set in 1997 (or at least jon is from 1997) but you can play with timeline fuckery :) there may be possible inaccuracies though as i was not a child in the 90s
he’s obsessed with pokemon and has only watched the anime on CDs but hasn’t played the games (grandma didn’t let him). there’s no special reason for him being obsessed with pokemon other than the fact that i also used to be obsessed with it and that’s one of my past obsessions that would reasonably also belong to a kid in the 90s
characterization is based on the monster at the end of this book on ao3 by yellow_caballero (very good read check it out), my younger self, people who try to sound smart by saying big words but it just makes them sound like they read thesauruses in their spare time, and possibly also undiagnosed autism
potential warning for child neglect? it probably won’t come up if you don’t mention his grandma or home life and whatnot, but it’s still there. nothing inherently malicious but just watch out
