A lot of American politics is much easier to understand when you realize that a *lot* of political “events” (like today’s “hearings” with Anthony Fauci) are really just content creation for politicians’ next fund-raising and brand identity campaigns. It doesn’t much matter what “happens.” All that matters is that it *happened* so that it can be edited, chopped, reframed and distorted according to the creator’s *needs.”
For whatever reason, American presidents seem to forget, every 20-30 years or so, that “rosy scenario” is not, in fact, a strategy for international relations.
Johnson had Vietnam. Bush/Obama had Afghanistan and Iraq. Now Trump has Iran.
I don’t know why they forget — or, for that matter, why Americans in general forget. But forget they do … to our collective sorrow.
So, having started a war with Iran for reasons that didn’t make sense, Donald Trump, using tactics disconnected from any likely to achieve credible goals in Iran, first threatened to wildly escalate the war before deciding it was over and making up a ceasefire. Now, having restarted that war for reasons that don’t make any sense using tactics that are disconnected from any credible goals, Trump has both threatened wild escalation of the renewed war *and* decided not to escalate in the space of 24 hours.
Just like we did in World War II. Right?

Which pretty much proves that those journalists have been so desperate to normalize Donald Trump they refused to recognize what and who he is.
Which explains a lot about American politics this last decade. Quite a lot indeed.

The Trumpian supergeniuses who started the Iran war with neither plan, nor goal, nor public consent have announced they are running out of money to prosecute their continuing to pointlessly bomb Iran and so they now want Congress to give them more money to perpetuate their plan-less, goal-less, and unsupported war … no questions asked or answered.
The hero Republicans in Congress will almost certainly agree. Because they’re strong! And patriotic! And love the Constitution!

Surely, if Trump, the greatest builder of all time, built the most perfectest wall ever that 100% keeps absolutely everyone he doesn’t want to come to the US out (and drugs too!), he can build a perfect fan wall at the Canadian border to keep out the wildfire smoke (and black flies and mosquitoes too!), right? Right?
One “hopeful” thing about watching and reading a *lot* of World Cup coverage these last few weeks is seeing that paranoia, conspiracy-mongering, and threats of violence are every bit as rife among World Cup fans as they are in American politics.

Apparently, at least according to Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, everyone who attacked the US Capitol should have been summarily executed by the Capitol Police. At least, that’s what it sounds like he believes given his thoughts about ICE killings of ordinary people ICE is engaging:
