Idk about you folks but dc trying to erase the fact that they've called Richard "Dick" for the last however long and trying to NOW call him "Rick" is sad. He will forever and for always be Dick
---To find the you that you should have been. The you who got derailed by cruel childhood events. Events that took your life's natural trajectory and twisted it. Changing it into something unimaginable... or even incredible... giving you the courage to embrace you birthright, your destiny, and finally realize... that youare BATMAN.
//Indie AU Dick Grayson. Private. Highly Selective. Loved and Recorded by Onyx. Rules.

Steph looked around the room for a moment and leaned in closer. “Want us to break you out of here?” She whispered dramatically, giving him a wink. “No but actually, do they let you out for anything? Can we bring you anything?” She offered him, moving to sit on the edge of the bed with him. She didn’t like how serious the whole hospital thing seemed. This was too far off the Dick she was used to, always energetic and smiling, now stuck in a hospital bed.
“I’m sure we could smuggle in some real food if you wanted. You can’t be enjoying what they have here. I can even bring you cereal?” She offered. She was fidgeting. It didn’t matter to her brain that she knew, logically, that he was okay. What mattered was that he was here and there was a louder part of her brain screaming THIS IS NOT OKAY. Terry was the only thing putting her the slightest bit at ease. If he was cool, she could force herself to be cool. “We’re fine. We came as soon as we heard.”
Dick snorted, the eyes of the man shifting to the clipboard at the foot of his bed. "I've been told I'm allowed to walk the hall to stretch my legs, but that's about it. Even then I have to bring the machines with me, so there’s not much point in getting up. " Hospitals were all the bats least favorite places. Dick was no exception especially if it was in regards to the fact he hated being stuck in one spot for too long. “I would like to see if there’s anything that actually has flavor around here. I know Bruce pays the hospital better then to let their patients eat bland food.”
Terry’s hand found its way to Steph’s shoulder, his eyes focused on Dick as he tried his best to smile a bit and make if seem a little better even if he was on edge himself. He hated hospitals. It wasn’t the hospital’s fault, but his family was his family and he wanted to stick around to make sure his brother was okay. Dick could see that much in his younger brother, almost any time one of them was hurt and even in the Bat Cave. “Cereal sounds amazing, actually.” His favorite breakfast food. It sounded perfect.

“Oh? How many brothers do you have if you don’t mind me asking.” She questioned tilting her head a little. “Looking back at the store for a moment, she faced him again before leaning on the wall.Blinking, she adjusted her hat with a slight frown before removing it and looking inside to see if something was caught in the holes in it. “I’m thinking about bringing my sister the next time I come here. Is there anywhere that might be a good place to go?”
“Just the two.” Jason and Terry--though Jason was... harder to connect with. The kid was stubborn, thick-headed, and temperamental. Where Terry was on the more collected side, analyzing everything. Using his time to listen and come to his own conclusions when he was spoken to. In a way kind of like how Dick himself was. But with her question, he thought some, glancing around to figure out where exactly he remembered good places to be. "There's a nice little place, about four blocks that way.." He gestured just down the road, "sells the best pastires. It's often outside the crime zone, too, so it should be fine. Then if you go another block past that there's a little shopping area for the university kids. I'd try there."

Watching Dick struggle with his emotions made her pretending indifference all the harder, it would be so easy. To make him leave if only she could pretend to be confused by his words, acting as if she didn’t know him from any other stranger on the street. Anyone new in her life. But… But him it actually hurts, hurts more than loosing him had. Just standing there made flashes of them spring into her mind, fresh & clear. As if she could taste the very essence of it if she swallowed.
It tightened her chest, with such a spareness it almost hurt & yet there was a gentleness to it at the same time. It made her want to both hide & embrace it all at once. It was so harsh it caused her breath to stop for a few moments, her green eyes casting downward at the railing.
She knew, without a doubt, that if she kept up the pretense he would walk away, he would leave for her, that knowledge somehow made it hurt all the more. Why couldn’t things be simpler, Kori knew without a doubt that it had been liberating between them, refreshing. Showing themselves to the point where they knew every emotional twitch.
“X’hal.”
Give me strength. The Tamaranean didn’t even finish her mental pray before she sprang into movement, flying over the railing so she could land in front of Dick, her arms quickly wrapping around his neck, holding him closely, as tightly as she could without causing him pain. Burying her face into his neck, breathing him in before whispering with all her emotions put into one word. “Rich’rd.”
He had never wanted to see her get hurt. He knew how tamaraneans were about their emotions and he cared what she felt. She'd been so important to him for so long and now her happiness was out of his hands. He wasn’t one to try to step in where he didn’t feel needed. And right now, the man was second guessing staying here. He was considered dead for so long.. not allowed to tell those he loved and cared about that he wasn’t actually dead. Only Bruce knew.
He was not going to leave until she’d said something.. anything. She could tell him to leave and he would respect her wishes. It was all up to her. If she asked him not to go, he would and very likely could do that too, though he doubted that outcome. His confidence was crushed by way of his not being able to keep his mind straight on the focus.
The last thing he expected was for her to come down to his level. To look him in the eye. Even less, he never expected her to come anywhere near him. But here she was, the blues of his eyes only showing a fraction of his surprise at her. Then she’d pulled him into a hug and he feels his chest tighten. There was that burning settled in his chest like one would feel when they were going to cry.
That was one thing he couldn’t pull himself into doing when it came to being even around her. Nonetheless, his arms wrapped around her in a tight return of her hug. She was taller than he was, which had always surprised him in one way or another. But god, did he miss her. “I really am sorry, Kori..”

Of course he would figure it out. He was by no means an idiot and he was never one to go without doing a little research now and then. Even so, he didn’t need to where this was concerned. For Dick to just.. Not be around was in and of itself, a red flag. Granted, he knew that sometimes the man would disappear for a few days, even a bit longer– but never like this. Never without some kind of word or warning. There had been nothing. Not one thing to let the demon know he was okay. Despite his best efforts not to be pouting, not to go looking at the damage, he did just that despite himself. Red hues drifted from Dick’s features, pupils slitting and gold flourishing around them as he decided against his better thoughts to take a deeper look at what all was going on. Broken bones, torn this and that, a punctured lung. He wanted to rip the bastard that did this apart.
Even so, he kept himself in check and felt his feathers itching beneath his skin all the more for it. He wanted to help, wanted to do more than just be a bystander. The worst part was that he could’ve helped, he could’ve done something sooner and made this so much easier on the other. His chest tightened, his throat felt like it was in a vice for a moment before Dick spoke and he found himself unwinding every so slightly for it. “Understandable, but still. Kinda wanna kick him in the shin.” Grumbling again, but he couldn’t help it. “Guess ‘Fine’ has the same definition for 'not dead’ in Dick speak too, hmn? But no, I’m fine, in a sense of the original definition.” About as fine as he could be seeing him like this, but he didn’t want to potentially make the other think he was at fault for the pathetic feelings he held. It was perhaps the first time he’d been afraid of divulging his honest identity in this case and while he was warring with himself internally, his nails dug further into his shins to bite him back to reality.
“… Well good luck to the newbie and all the merrier for ya.” A muttered answer as he finished up his own personal exam of Dick before he returned his gaze to those blue eyes he’d been wondering about for weeks now. “I’d say its good to see ya too but it’s better to see that you’re alive more so….” There was a lingering pause, he wasn’t sure what to do or say. How would Dick even react to it? What would happen to this relationship they had when he knew the truth? Would he be afraid of him or perhaps condemn him for what he does on the daily? No no, Dick wasn’t like that and Raven could help. He could make this better. His eyes averted and he rolled his lower lip between sharp jowls for a moment. “I.. Could make it better. S'why I’m so pissed. I could'a made ya better right from the start but.. Listen. I’m about to fuck everything up and ya gotta just.. Just fuckin’ deal with this shit for a minute okay.” Right. It didn’t matter how he felt, what happened to him, none of it; what mattered was potentially being able to help DIck.
So he had to suck it up. What ever punishment he recieved for it would be his own fault. After all, it’d been his own decision to become what he was. He had to pay for any consequence that rose up for it. So he bit the bullet and grasped his shins all the tighter as those emerald flames flared up to engulf him. Despite being fire, they were neither hot nor cool but rather, a gentle warmth that came with their presence before they faded out to reveal what he truly was. Horns protruded from his skull, his hair lengthened and frame covered in a black membrane and feathers, and at his back were two fairly large wings curled up tight against him. “Tellin’ ya not to freak out might be useless but.. Don’t freak out. Now ya can hate me and shit later but.. I need you’re permission to do anything.. So let me help. At least with the severe injuries. I can see 'em all and its.. I just wanna make it better.” Well, there was no turning back now. Even if he could play it off as some dream or hallucination from the pain medicine, that wouldn’t hold up for someone brilliant like Dick.
Nor did Raven even want to lie this time.
He hadn’t wanted to leave Raven int he dark like this.. Not so that the other could find out only a few weeks later he was badly hurt and in the hospital recovering like he was. He hated sitting in the hospital. He highly disliked having to be in the same room--with the same beige walls and same monitor beeping every now and then... Never a change in scenery. Always the same few channels on the television, but none of them something the man wanted to watch. Jason had brought a book, but Dick had already read it... twice.. He was just so tired that when he read it the very first time, he had missed details that were important to the plot. Those details he had caught the second time around, but..
As the raven approached, the blues of the man’s eyes remained on him. He didn’t like the idea of the people in the city bringing any harm tot hose he cared about already. The family was growing.. which meant Dick would grow weary when people so much as looked at others wrong. He was a protector first and foremost. On a positive note, he had been genuinely happy to see the smaller male. “Fine when you grow up in the family I did means alive and maybe having a good mental health day.” He shifted making sure the cap on his water was screwed on tight enough that he could easily unscrew it if he wanted it before setting the bottle back on the surface it rested on.
Raven seemed to surprise Dick from time to time.. Not that it was a bad thing.. But he chose to skip over responding to the words Raven spoke. Confusion crossed the man’s face at the phrase spoken, as though he couldn’t imagine how the other could possibly ruin what they’d managed to build in the time they’d known each other. Terry’d loved spending time around Raven since the day he’d met the other. But the guy presuming that he might ruin the relationship between them had caused some look of concern to spread, the blues of his eyes reflecting such. He didn’t know what he meant, but the man remained quiet for a moment before his face sobered from the concern. “I don’t feel like you could..”
But he noted those flames, the difference in Raven before and after the flames had consumed and died down. He may not have been completely used to the strange things that could be found around Earth. But slowly, he was dulling slowly. Mild shock now settled upon the man’s face as he looked over Raven. “Why would I hate you? Just because you aren’t what I thought you were?” His voice is quiet, a bit of a smile passed his lips. “The only issue with fixing what’s wrong with me is the extent of my injuries.. and that can raise questions if it gets fixed too fast.” He and Bruce had already talked about it. Finding someone that could heal it faster so he could get out of this miserable hospital room.
Bruce had told him the same thing he just told Raven.
