“I’m guessing you’re feeling this way because you were raised by humans,” Ariel said after she pulled Eric aside into one of the more private parlors in the palace, “humans who think one man and one woman is the only way to do this. And it’s not. It isn’t for merpeople, it isn’t for most anything else in the sea, and it isn’t for humans. And your people say we’re savage.”

Eric winced, eyeing sideways at the door. “I know, I just don’t want to hurt you.”

“I want you to be happy. I want you to be okay with what you’re feeling, and I won’t swim in your way. It’s not hurtful to ask the question, especially since my answer is yes.”

Before she could reassure him any more, she heard a knock at the door and it opened soon after.

“Oh! Hi, James,” Ariel said, tugging on Eric’s hand to follow her to the other man. “Can you please tell Eric that your species is terrible? How can a world that makes such wonderful things be so...so--”

“Closed-minded?” Eric rubbed the back of his neck. “Sorry. I’m new at this....whatever this is. If I could, though...”

Eric leaned forward, daring to press his lips the man’s before him.

Ariel stood on tiptoe, whispering I thought I’d have to push him before she pressed her lips to James and Eric’s, catching the corners of each. They’d master the three-partner kiss one day. She’d cut them some slack. They were humans, after all.

Ariel snuggled close to Eric, wrapped tightly in blankets while preferring the radiant warmth of his chest. She sighed, pressing her ear to his heartbeat. “The doctor said I won’t be sick for much longer, but that I should be getting more bed rest, which sounds boring for both of us if you ask me.”

She smiled, putting a hand on her belly, and after a second thought she moved his hand to it as well. “My sisters said I kicked the hardest. Like a little shark apparently. But I can’t wait until she does.”

It was a she, of course. For her family, it was always she. And they’d had seven chances. 

Ariel kissed her husband’s chest. “Mmm. I love you. Please save me from this bed rest. I don’t know what I’m gonna do with myself.”

One of my favorite things about The Little Mermaid is how both Ariel and Eric are coded heterosexual but anyone with half a brain and eyes can see neither of them are even close
