i get so much second hand embarrassment from middle aged and older women thirsting under videos of 60-80 year old men from when they were younger. trying to find clips of the making of jcs 2000 and almost every comment is about how they want to fuck glenn carter

saw someone on a comment say that jcs is just religious propaganda and it pissed me off so i’m going to explain why it is not.

1. first and foremost, a piece of media discussing something does not mean it is promoting that thing. your story can be based upon something and it not be propaganda. this is the case for jcs

2. jcs is not a direct retelling of christian scripture, and utilizes story points and characters to not only explore those characters and plots deeper, but to critique and question how it could realistically happen. more often then not, the show actively defies scripture. it critiques that a human man was perfectly content with dying and his lack of autonomy over that decision. it critiques that someone who had been a part of the apostles simply sold out a friend and influence simply for money (or possession according to some). it critiques using religion to justify violence and war. it forces you to look at things that happen in the bible with a critical eye and ask yourself if things of the sort could be carried out in any sense of reality.

3. the actual existence of god is not explicit in the show and purposefully leaves it to audience interpretation. the resurrection is not included in the show (usually) for a specific reason, it is supposed to make you wonder who may have been correct. THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT. jesus christ superstar works as not just another story of the passion of christ because it places these classical biblical villains and hero’s as complex people who are not solely good or bad. it works because it does not only not promote the idea that god is real, but also that if that is the interpretation you make of it, it then makes you consider how loving or ethical that being is by forcing people to suffer to carry out a very specific outcome.

i think that saying jesus christ superstar is a propaganda piece for christianity is the same thing as saying that percy jackson is a propaganda piece for hellenism. if you don’t like a story because it discusses religion, so be it that is absolutely your choice. but don’t say things that are simply untrue because you don’t enjoy it or don’t understand it.
