I’ve been jotting notes as I’ve been rereading James the last couple days. I picked up my physical copy today and realized that the nun I inherited it from (a great-aunt) was also apparently a fan.
My favorite quotes this time around (so far):
(1:14)“but each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire”
(1:18) “we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.”
(1:19) “Know this, my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,”
(1:22) “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
(1:27) “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
(2:6) “But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you, is it not they who drag you into court?”
(2:9) “But if you show partiality, you commit sin,”
(2:14) “What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him?”
(2:17) “So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.”
(2:18) “But some one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.”
