You could hear him arrive, but you donāt bother to turn to look yet. Youāre crouched on the ground, knees pulled to your chest, and you just stare at Lake Knot City from a distance, your eyes glued to the towering buildings and the equally tall wall encircling the entire area. For their safety, supposedly. You donāt glance over when he crouches beside you, his elbow on his knee and his chin in his hand. His mask is off, but his hood still shields his face a bit. Rather than staring at the city, heās staring at you. Not that you can judge, you have quite the tendency to stare as well. āIt canāt be so interesting youāre going to ignore me, sweetheart,ā Higgs finally speaks up, and you can hear the smirk in his tone. Stalking you and trying to get your attention seemed to be his newest hobby, though you didnāt have much of a clue as to why he cared about you so much. You were essentially the antithesis to everything he was, or stood for at the very least, so you could only presume that was his reasoning. He was smart enough to know he couldnāt kill you, and he must know that even if he did try, Amelie would never let him get away with such a thing.Ā
You finally turn your head to him, your gaze meeting his stormy one. He was interesting to you, you could admit that much. As detestable as you found him, he was a good option for learning how humans shouldnāt behave. āIt is.ā
āAh, but here you are acknowledging me,ā he points out, raising his finger. You werenāt blinking, rarely remembered to, so he didnāt either. You really didnāt like him. You stare, not even trying to wear your mask of humanity around him, then turn away from him to look at the city again. Cities were so curious to you, seeing how theyāve changed over the long, long time youāve been watching. One thing that never changed, in your opinion, was how isolating they are. Full of so many people, yet everyone in them is so alone. You didnāt like them either. Truthfully, you didnāt like most things. āOh, cāmon, donāt start sulkinā now, we both know youāre thrilled to see me. Iām your favorite,ā Higgs taunts, moving closer to you until his grinning face is only a few inches from the side of yours.Ā
His proximity irks you, and you finally look at him again. Silence for a few moments, and heās waging a one-sided staring contest against you. His eyes turn glossy, his jaw tenses, and he glances away as his bodily functions force him to blink. āLeave,ā you demand, voice slightly harsher than your usual monotonous tone.
āJust like Iām your favorite, even if you might try tādeny it, youāre my favorite freak. It sure is amusing to find out that life themself is so fundamentally odd that humanity hates you. āCourse, I sympathize, sorta. Hard for us weirdos, huh?ā he winks, leaning even closer. Something in you aches at his words. You stand slowly, carefully, more like a clumsy puppet rather than someone graceful. You stare down at him, still crouching, and he just smiles up at you. So amused, so giddy. Heās like a child that just found his newest toy.
