     A teary-eyed Sachin Tendulkar on Saturday brought the curtains down on his phenomenal career by giving a heart-warming speech to thank his family, coaches, teammates, friends and fans, saying it was hard to believe that his life between "22 yards in the last 24 years" has come to end.

All my friends. Settle down let me talk, I will get more and more emotional.

My life, between 22 yards for 24 years, it is hard to believe that that wonderful journey has come to an end, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank people who have played an important role in my life.

  The most important person in my life, and I have missed him a lot since 1999 when he passed away, my father. Without his guidance, I don't think I would have been standing here in front of you.

   He gave me freedom at the age of 11, and told me that [I should] chase my dreams, but make sure you do not find short cuts.

Sachin Tendulkar facts

   The legendary batsman is still at the crease with a score of 38 at the close of play in his hometown, after striking up an encouraging partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara, as they clocked up 72.

Tendulkar is bringing down the curtain on a glorious 24-year career after he completes his 200th Test against the Windies.

The 'Little Master', who has scored 100 international centuries, has had a procession of legendary figures queuing up to shower him with praise ahead of his retirement from the sport.

"There will not be another Sachin Tendulkar," wrote Australian bowler Shane Warne in his Daily Telegraph column.

He was the best batsman of my generation. We all know about his talent, but that temperament and mind-set to play 200 Test matches and to play for such a long period of time shows you the game means so much to him."

Virat Kohli Smashes Sachin Tendulkar's Record

   Kohli claimed number two slot in the ICC ODI rankings while swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar broke into the top-10 for the first time in his career

Virat Kohli scored 191 runs, including 127 in the final match, in India's 2-1 series win as he pushed South Africa's Hashim Amla to number three in the list, topped by Amla's compatriot AB de Villiers.

Bhuvneshwar took only two wickets in the series but he jumped seven places to number seven, just behind Ravindra Jadeja, who slipped to sixth from fifth.

On the other side, if New Zealand win the series, then they will leapfrog Pakistan into sixth position.

Currently, both Pakistan and New Zealand are on equal points on 98 ratings points but the Black Caps are in seventh position when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

ODI Series vs Sri Lanka

   India have rested Bhuvaneshwar Kumar for the first three ODIs against Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli has been named captain as the selectors decided to give Mahendra Singh Dhoni a break.

Kohli, who has been touted as a future India skipper, had last led in Zimbabwe, leading the world champions to emphatic victories.

Dhoni, who has been under pressure of a hectic schedule, was rested probably keeping in mind the upcoming tour of Australia and the World Cup that follows immediately.

Dhoni, one of the busiest cricketers in the world, was last rested when India toured Bangladesh for a short ODI series earlier in the year. The team was then led by Suresh Raina as Kohli had also been given a break

Ashwin is one of four spinners in the side. The others are Amit Mishra, Akshar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja. The pace department is expected to be led by Mohammed Shami in Kumar's absence.

Sri Lanka will play a five-match ODI series from November 2 to 16 after West Indies abandoned their tour of India over pay disputes with their board. Cuttack, Hyderabad, Ranchi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad have been named as the five venues for the matches.

Virat's message to Critics

   Virat Kohli says his fighting half-century last week in the Delhi ODI was the kind of knock he needed to overcome the first lean patch of his otherwise prolific career.         

  Kohli has endured a prolonged slump in form since the England tour, where he failed to score a single fifty in four Test matches.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the fourth ODI between India and the West Indies,Virat  Kohli the break he took during the Champions League event did him a world of good as he could work on his game.

Last two games I went in with a clear head. For me it doesn't matter if I get out playing the same shot again and again, at least I am feeling clear and confident in the mind.

Virat's performace against Srilanka

Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir toyed with the Sri Lankan attack as India stormed into the final of the cricket tri-series after crushing the islanders by eight wickets in a lopsided match here today.

The Indian bowlers did a neat job, skittling out Sri Lanka for a meagre 213 in 46.1 overs before their batting colleagues took over, guiding the team to 214 for two for a facile win that came with 17.2 overs to spare. 

Irrespective of the outcome of their final group match against Bangladesh tomorrow, India will meet Sri Lanka in Wednesday's final.

Kohli notched up his fifth half century in his 18th ODI, which he made with the help of nine fours while Gambhir, who was dropped twice – on 41 and 44 – smashed his 19th ODI fifty in his 94th match.

With this win, India, who played today without key players Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra, have won two matches out of three while Sri Lanka ended their league engagements with three wins out of four.

India have collected nine points, with a bonus point for reaching the target in less overs in today's match.

Sachin Tendulkar walk out to bat at Lord's one last time

 Sachin Tendulkar ended his career as the sport’s highest-ever run-scorer (34,347 runs in Tests and one-day internationals) and the only man to have scored 100 international centuries.

After retiring from cricket,  Sachin Tendulkar has spent his time with his family, in the Rajya Sabha and as a mentor to Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians.

During the Marylebone Cricket Club’s bicentenary celebration match at Lord’s on July 5, Tendulkar was chosen as captain of the MCC side against a Rest of the World team led by legendary Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne.

Lord’s Cricket Ground took the opportunity to film the maestro walking out of the dressing room, through the famous Long Room and out into the Mecca of cricket for what would certainly be the last time.

MCC beat Rest of the World

   Australia's Aaron Finch made a dashing 181 not out as MCC beat the Rest of the World by seven wickets in a one-day match celebrating the bicentenary of Lord's Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Set 294 to win, MCC finished on 296 for three with 25 balls to spare. 

Earlier, Tendulkar's former India team-mate Yuvraj Singh struck a blistering 132 in a total of 293 for seven after MCC had collapsed to 68 for five in the face of Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who finished with figures of four for 45.

Tendulkar and Brian Lara were disappointed when the leg-spinner suffered a broken right hand batting when struck by an accidental beamer from fast bowler Brett Lee, his former Australia team-mate.

  India's well-deserved nine-wicket victory is their biggest in terms of wickets over Australia in ODIs.India have won both their ODIs vs Australia at Sawai Man Singh, Jaipur. 

For the first time, India have won three successive ODIs at Jaipur - by one run vs South Africa on February 21, 2010; by 8 wickets vs New Zealand on December 1, 2010 and by 9 wickets vs Australia on October 16, 2013.

India's 362 for one is their highest successful chase in ODIs, obliterating the 330 for four vs Pakistan at Mirpur on March 18, 2012.

Virat Kohli, with his 52-ball hundred, has set an Indian record for the quickest century in ODIs - the seventh quickest in ODIs.

Kohli, with 850 runs at an average of 50.00 in 24 matches, is the top run-scorer for India in ODIs this year.

Kohli became the third batsman after Shikhar Dhawan and Tillakaratne Dilshan to register three hundreds in ODIs this year.

Kohli's 16th century in ODIs is his second vs Australia.

Virat's average of 82.70 in successful chases is the second highest in ODIs (minimum 2,000 runs) - his tally being 2481 in 43 innings (13 times not out), including ten hundreds and twelve fifties.

Only Sachin (14 in 124 innings) has scored more hundreds in successful chases than Virat. India have won all ten games when Kohli scored hundreds while chasing.

Sachin Tendulkar to be given Bharat Ratna

Sachin Tendulkar will be conferred with Bharat Ratna. The official announcement was made by a release from the Prime Minister's Office on Saturday.

The legendary cricketer, who played his final innings in cricket today, at Wankhede, will be the first sportsperson to be honoured with the award.

Tendulkar is the seventh Maharashtrian to win Bharat Ratna after Dhondo Karve, Pandurang Kane, Vinoba Bhave, BR Ambedkar, Lata Mangeshkar and Bhimsen Joshi.

The decision to honour Tendulkar comes after several noted personalities had voiced their support. Lata was the latest to say that Tendulkar deserved Bharat Ratna. "Whatever he (Sachin) has done for the country, very few people can.

He deserves the honour. He has made all of us proud," Lata had told television channels on Friday. She herself had received the honour in 2001.

Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award, conferred for performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour. The honour has been conferred on 41 people till date.

The living recipients include former president APJ Abdul Kalam (1997) and economist Amartya Sen (1999). The only foreign recipient of the award was Nelson Mandela (1990).

Sachin's Hundredth hundred

   Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to make a 100 international centuries, getting to the milestone against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla stadium in Mirpur at 5:05pm local time on March 16, 2012. It ended a year-long wait for one of the most discussed landmarks in cricket history, and was his first ODI hundred against Bangladesh, completing his set of centuries against every Full Member country in both Tests and ODIs.

He reached the 100th hundred in the 44th over with a nudge behind square leg, one of his favoured strokes to reach a century.

Despite the huge amount of hype surrounding the landmark, which has shown little sign of abating during the prolonged wait, there was no over-the-top celebration.

 He usually does on reaching a hundred, and he acknowledged his team-mates by raising his helmet towards the dressing room.

Tendulkar's achievement might have come against one of the weaker teams and in the league game of a low-key competition, but he still had to brave a raucous and partisan crowd. 

The stadium had been less than half-full when the match started, but as Tendulkar's innings progressed, more and more people came in and by the time he completed his hundred there weren't too many empty seats.

Though India were past 200 with only two wickets down, Bangladesh tried to stifle Tendulkar by keeping seven fielders in the circle. 

The single to square leg finally brought up another mark of the longevity of the man who already has the most runs and has played the most matches in Tests and ODIs.

Myth about Sachin Tendulkar

   Sachin Tendulkar has been on the winning side in 70 Test matches, the most of any Indian cricketer. In those 70 Tests, he has averaged 62.36, which is not insignificant. Of his 51 Test hundreds, 20 have come in the pursuit of victory.

  Yet somehow Tendulkar will call time on his career with the perception he never quite got it done when India needed him the most.

Conventional wisdom holds that when the going got toughest, it was VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid that India could count on, not Tendulkar, who even felt the burden himself. 

That’s why his 103 not out in the fourth innings against England in Chennai after the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008 was so important to him.

Tendulkar needed to prove that he could deliver the goods when his team needed him to.

Tendulkar has averaged 49.46 with three hundreds and seven fifties from 41 innings when India has come out on top.

He averages 59.58 with one hundred and four fifties from 22 innings compared to Dravid’s average of 56.77 with three fifties from 19 innings.

In the final analysis, Tendulkar may not be the most clutch player India has produced, but that does not diminish him as a cricketer. It just makes him human, like the rest of us.
