The next iteration (4) of my first song of the new year 2019, “The Island.” All my life I have visited Galveston for rest and relaxation, as well as a long history of playing trumpet in a Mardi Gras Krewe – 36 years with the Krewe of Aquarius. And now we are thinking of moving to The Island.

This song with a nice calypso beat is written and recorded by Pop Jones, and Pop Jones Music. All tracks are played with real instruments, including acoustic guitar, acoustic bass guitar, tambourine, flute, and vocals – all tracks are performed by Pop Jones.

This first recording release of Playing in The Shade, “Indigo Blue Eyes,” is written by Charlie Covert, a Texas songwriter, and founding member of the group Playing In The Shade.

The mix now includes a flute intro, followed by flute backs throughout, as well as some updated trumpet licks. Tracks include accordion, vocals, trumpet, flute, bass guitar, tambourine, and cajon. Only real acoustic instruments are used in all tracks – no midi monkey business.

As with any piece of art, the creator hates to call it a final production, so here is the next installment of my final song for 2016, written in honor of my daughter Jennifer who passed away in September of that year.

This is a country song that is a family affair. I came up with the tune and basic theme and melody of the chorus a couple of months ago. A few weeks later I was playing the tune and incorporating a folk finger picking style, when my daughter, Lauryn Orr, started getting ideas for the lyrics.

We want to capture the feel of a beer joint jukebox country song, complete with broken heart and tender memories. All tracks are recorded by Pop except the lead guitar, which features Kalen Orr. Instruments include, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, folk guitar, bass guitar, cajon, and tambourine.

This is a remix of the original post with vocals that are not so hot.

This song is the result of reviving an old song collaboration – Pop Jones and Joseph Webber. How many have chanced upon an old card of long ago, and uncovered aging tender memories?

If you like an old time country waltz, then this song is for you. Easy going, with tender memories, and I replaced the blues harp with a sweet flute.

Ah yes … it is once again the holiday season, and Christmas promises to be the height of our intermission. What better way to celebrate than a song about our special Texas Christmas celebrations. Whether it be singing around a campfire, savoring homemade tamales, or just good old caroling and mistletoe, a Christmas in Texas is hard to beat.

A bit of instrumental fun, for this tune I recorded myself on guitar, flute, trumpet, harmonica, cajon, and tambourine tracks. I think I am finally happy with my home-brewed mix.

This recording is performed on all acoustic instruments, save for my electric bass and the great pickup on my acoustic Taylor 810e guitar. The trumpet is an old King student model that has seen plenty of exposure along the seawall on Galveston Island as well as the Strand District there. The harmonica is a "C" 10-hole diatonic Hohner Marine Band Special 20, played cross to the song which is in G. Percussion is supplied by a Pearl cajon, a nice brass jangle tambourine, and string striking sounds on the Taylor. Finally the lead instrument on this is my solid silver Gemeinhardt concert flute

The picture is of a US Navy submarine the Nathan Hale (SSBN-623). I was a crew member from 1972 - 1975. We didn't catch much wind, but we did a lot of undersea sailing from Guam north to the Bearing Sea and back, then from Guam to Pearl Harbor, and finally on to Bremerton, Washington.

Here is a traveling or wandering tune, which makes me reflect on the meanings of events in my life, and of course my perceptions of them. With the recent passing of my daughter, such wispy, reflective songs speak to my soul.

I played and recorded all tracks on this instrumental mix in B flat. Finally taking the plunge into folk-style finger picking only a few months ago, this is my first post using the techniques I am learning. The rhythm base is on my 12-string Martin, employing a rolling-style finger pick in 4/4. The primary melody instrument is my C concert flute, aided by a Bb Hohner 10-hole diatonic harmonica. I use my Taylor acoustic on the guitar lead, and my trusty bass guitar to give it a little depth. Finally percussion comes from a cajon and tambourine.
