“Were closed for a private event. Go find your drink elsewhere.” Serena said plainly. She wanted to remain grieving but couldn’t. She had work to do, and a huge Christmas Party today was what she needed to focus her mind on. 

      Setting her jaw, Poppy nodded tersely. “Right. Got it. I’ll just go somewhere else. I wasn’t really looking for a drink. I just need a quiet corner to sit in and not be bothered.”

Charlie was tired of hearing about the funeral arrangements. It wasn’t his plan to attend no matter how disrespectful it looked. He’d preferred to remember his dad breathing and well than let the memory of him on his casket overshadow that. And so, he took a walk to be away from all that chatter. Where? He didn’t know nor did he care.

He wasn’t sure how long he’d been walking, but it didn’t clear his head. With his phone on the palm of his hand, he scrolled through his contacts seeing the messages left for him, and he wasn’t sure if he still wanted to keep some of his old life here. It wasn’t the same speaking to them. Part of him didn’t want to speak to them because they were a reminder of what he couldn’t have, which was to say the least irritating.

Coming across a park, he didn’t realize Poppy was seated on a park bench until she spoke. Lifting his head, he slid his phone into his pocket and came to a stop. “You should’ve stayed in your ro-” He stopped himself from continuing when he realized that she might’ve left for the same reason he didn’t stay in his place. “I was only going to pass by. There was no need to call attention to yourself.”

      “I don’t remember needing permission to go out.” She snapped back, knowing exactly what he’d intended to stay. Thoughtless as he always was, Charlie didn’t realise that she didn’t have the luxury of living alone. Her own space was always invaded by roommates and other Hearts because they were a ‘family’. The word made her grimace and she let out a bitter laugh. Did he think that his words hurt her? She still remembered that he just wanted to know why she despised him as she did, but never gave him the satisfaction of admitting he reminded her of a person she once was; a person she’d never be again. He was weak to her.

      Another laugh, more manic than the last, and she raised her gaze to meet his. “Then keep walking. There’s no need to waste your precious air, is there? If you thought it was so stupid to ‘bring attention to myself’ then maybe you shouldn’t have given me the time and given us what we both want: fucking privacy.” Maybe being friends with Cate had hardened her against certain tings or there was the possibility that she’d always been so cold internally.

      Turning her gaze back down with a heavy sigh, she waved her hand vaguely in the air and continued. “Go. Keep walking. I’m not trying to fight anyone right now, Charles.”

      Mourning surrounded her. Pain, despair, the thick and suffocating tension of loss permeated the air. Her mind wandered back to finding Malcom’s body. Reliving that moment over and over again in her head, watching Cate and all else who knew Marcus weep was only too much for her. Wonderland itself was a prison, but to be trapped in her worst nightmare with the ever present reminder that she was alone at the end of the day? She couldn’t stomach it.

      Crisp night air rose gooseflesh on her skin as she stared blankly ahead. Seated on a park bench with only a notebook to keep her company, she’d been trying to put thoughts to paper in some vain attempt to release the emotions she refused to show, but the pages remained blank. A soft rustling caused her to raise her head, eyes narrowed as she watched the newcomer, the interloper encroaching upon her space.

      “I guess,” she started warily, “it was stupid of me to assume that no one would come her in the middle of the night.”

She startles slightly when she hears a noise behind her, raising her head from her arms from when she had been wishly vainly for sleep. It hadn’t come easy to her the past couple of weeks, not since the night of Marcus’ death. Her dreams were plagued with  with horror and Marcus being cruelly ripped away from her tainted every single one of them. Cate had always hated being drunk, but alcohol had been the only thing to ease the pain if only in the slightest and got her to pass out long enough to have decent rest. Swiping a hand across her cheek in case any moisture had escaped before turning her head to the side and dipping her chin. “I don’t want company.” 

      “I’m not going anywhere.” The petite brunette replied stonily as she approached her friend. For all who rightfully feared Cate Cheshire, Popy was never afraid in her presence. When she was like this, there was even less to cower before. Feeling larger though she stood much smaller, Poppy came next to the woman and placed her arms around to hug her best friend tightly. “I’m not going to leave you. You can say whatever you want, you can do whatever, but I’m not going to leave you alone right now. Not ever, but especially not right now.”
