“Glory” by #PorterBrando Creatives and artists are the ones who create the assets. They deliver the product from which all platforms derive their value. Streaming platforms, sharing platforms, and all of the like, have no purpose if not for the raw material provided by creatives. However intelligent artists are, they seem to not be as clever as those who siphon off value from their works. Musicians go into debt and then get shafted into selling off publishing rights to monolithic enterprises, authors die of starvation to be later hailed as laureates, painters go mad at the sight of it all. The only good part about any city, any platform, any streaming service, is the artists who make themselves vulnerable within it. However they derive the least value from the venture. History has shown this, time and time again, from Zora Neal Hurston to Nina Simone, from Michael Jackson to Lauryn Hill. However, though not very clever, the artist’s will continue to fall into this fly trap. Why? Because we don’t do it for results, art is not a means to an end. Art is the end in itself. It is the passion in one’s core that makes waking up worth while. So I don’t expect it to change. Non-artistic clever deal makers will continue to earn value off of the creatives.
