PORTSMOUTH PHOENIX: Housing Futures.

An open competitive call to planners, urban designers and architects aged 40 and under, to participate in a three-day workshop investigating housing solutions in the city of Portsmouth.

Participants receive mentorship from Bell Phillips Architects, Mikhail Riches, Proctor & Matthews Architects, RCKa and Ruth Butler Architect.

Two residential towers, Leamington House and Horatio House, which “have had their cladding stripped and been evacuated, post-Grenfell. Following survey investigations, the towers are now scheduled for demolition – leaving the city’s housing stock reduced, despite demand continuing to rise.”

This new housing paradigm establishes the context for The Portsmouth Phoenix competition and this unique design masterclass providing a matchless opportunity for young architects, planners and urban designers to explore exemplary and sustainable future urban housing, engaging the public while contributing knowledge towards the site’s development.

Applications should include two A4 pages featuring a CV and written reasons for wishing to attend the event. Those selected will receive subsistence but not accommodation and 18 hours of core CPD.

The deadline for applications is midday, 10 February.

The ChatterBox Pavilion - for a multicultural city

The ChatterBox Pavilion is a public art installation located at the end of Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth. The installation offers a new public space celebrating diversity and local culture whilst promoting multicultural integration. Through the creation of an accessible, user-friendly, interactive and playful environment, it will encourage an active and inclusive use of the space.

The pavilion, promoted by the Urban Living Lab of the Portsmouth School of Architecture, was developed from the winning competition entry by Architecture students Helena Kranjc and Pepe Sánchez-Molero. The pavilion has been co-designed and co-created by the community group Chat Over Chai and students in the Cultural and Creative Industries Faculty at the University of Portsmouth. The installation consists of a series of timber frames in which are installed several spinning panels that can be pushed by the users and reveal their two opposite faces. Users are engaged on the topic of migration through play, by images, artwork, illustrations, textual information and key relevant data.The artwork was produced through a series of community workshops held between August 2018 and June 2019.

The project is part of a long-term partnership between the University of Portsmouth School of Architecture and Portsmouth City Council's housing directorate, aimed to improve the quality of public spaces in Portsmouth and to make the design of the public realm more accessible to all citizens.

The ChatterBox pavilion project counted with the collaborative contribution of Maker’s Guild and Journeys Festival International Portsmouth and was supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

One of the community participants said: “We are all excited to see the fruits of our joint imaginings and endeavour. Whatever the outcome and however the installation is used this has been an interesting, motivating and unifying project; the process and the eventual product being valuable for us all”

Interior Architecture Student receiving The City Academy Award for "Buildings and Internal Spaces" The City Academy is a very popular and highly valued institution in Bulgaria and since 2014 they organise an architectural and design competition for student projects. We are very proud that our student Ralitsa Yankova was among the award winners in the category "Building and Interior Spaces". Ralitsa submitted her "21 Century Coffee House" project, which she completed as part of her first-year studies. Despite the participants being in their vast majority graduate students, Ralitsa received a Special Mention, as the judges recognised the passion and the quality of her work. You can see Ralitsa's work in the following images and at the competition link, where you can find her work under no 50. We want to congratulate Ralitsa Yankova for her excellent work and her courage and perseverance to submit her work among 80 other projects. It is an amazing result, which shows the high-quality projects of our students. We look forward to seeing her next projects.

We have kicked off this year with the PASS Polyphony Lecture series, starting with Chris Lefteri, of Chris Lefteri Design - inspiring students with his interactive presentation and discussion on innovation solutions through material-centred approaches.

Smartcities, Resilient Landscapes - This week we were joined by CJ Lim, Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bartlett, UCL. The provocative lecture focussed on recent research and projects, using nature as an instrument to inspire innovation and social reform, reflecting on the work of William Morris, Martha Schwartz, studio and student work designing resilient landscapes.

"A few photos of our wonderful Hong Kong BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design, Fashion and Textile Design and Graphic Design Graduates taken at the Caritas Institute of Higher Education Graduate Show in July 2019. The graduating students shown in these photos formed the first cohort with our Partners Caritas; the next cohort of students will be starting their final year studies in Hong Kong on Monday 09 September, 2019."

This is an amazing opportunity to experience the realisation of a real Design to Build project and be part of a dynamic team. In addition, you will learn about timber joints and construction techniques. The workshop itself will be a fun and engaging extra curricular experience which, without doubt, will be great for your CV! Students who attend more than 3 days will receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution to the project.

The ChatterBox pavilion will aim to provide an accessible and user-friendly structure that celebrates cultural diversity and promotes multiculturalism and integration. The installation will encourage an inclusive use of the public space through the creation of an interactive and playful place.

Envisioning Future Green Cities: The Environment-Culture-Technology Nexus, this 3-day workshop at the University of Brasilia aimed to form a network of scholars involving both established academics, as well as early career researchers in exploring ideas for the envisioning of sustainable future for existing and new cities in Brazil and the UK. The workshop, which was led by Dr Fabiano Lemes and Dr Tarek Teba from the Portsmouth School of Architecture, sought to support capacity building in the area of sustainable urbanisation in Brazil. By linking environment, culture and technology in the articulation of solutions and visions for the future of cities in Brazil and the UK, the workshop considered that interdisciplinary and systemic thinking are crucial for the creation of more sustainable, resilient, equitable and vibrant urban environment where residents’ identity, memory and well-being are essential principles.

The workshop was sponsored by the University of Portsmouth as part of the Global Challenges Research Fund.

Making Meaning of Places: Innovative Technologies, Community and Heritage, a research workshop organised by CCI Cultural Heritage Research Group and the Cluster for Sustainable Cities, took place last week. This two-day workshop focused on two main themes within the context of cultural heritage research - innovative technologies, and community and place-making. Alongside a number of internal and external presenters, we were pleased to host keynote speakers Dr Husam Alwaer from the University of Dundee and Dr Andrew Roberts from English Heritage.

Our students have contributed to the construction of the Emergent City exhibition created by the internationally renowned British artist Stanza at the Festival of Speed at Goodwood. The result is stunning!

We offer a number of Master’s courses including MA Interior Architecture and Design, MA Sustainable Cities and MA Architectural Conservation.

These Master’s degrees offer an exciting opportunity for graduates and professionals who work in the built environment to re-direct their skills and to develop a specialism within a chosen subject.

The courses create a stimulating space to learn with others and this year students worked in partnership with ArtEcology a mixed disciplinary ecology/art team working to enhance biodiversity in the built environment. Design proposals were developed by exploring computation and its relation with natural protocols, through playing with software programs Rhino, 3dStudio Max, prototyping through the use of 3-D printers and milling machine.

The programmes support students to develop their portfolio of work, to engage with new technologies and to play and make in workshops.
