Motivation from my new bullet journal :)
5 things i learned in my first year
hiiii lovelies! i’m currently in (and almost done) my first year of university, and i thought i’d share with you guys some things i learned last term that have helped me a lot this term!!
1. don’t skip class (!!!!) - i cannot stress how important this is. last term, i think i attended 2 out of 8 lectures a week. i thought i could teach everything to myself, and that i didn’t need to actually attend class to do good. i was so so so wrong, and i learned that the hard way. you may find your lectures and professors boring, but i highly recommend you attend your lectures anyways - you actually will leave the room with gained knowledge… trust me (ps. i learned my lesson this term and i’m doing much much better with attendance)
2. don’t take 8am classes - unless you’re an early bird and actually like being up early and can handle a lot of information that time of day, don’t do that to yourself. one of the reasons i didn’t attend my lectures was because i had 8am classes and most of the time chose sleep over knowledge. sleep is super super SUPER important in college/university so make sure you get enough sleep to stay healthy and happy!
3. bring your own lunch - i literally used to spend 30$ a day on lunch on campus, and i actually hate myself for it. pack your own lunch at home, the healthier the better, and you’d be surprised at how much money you save
4. don’t procrastinate - we all do it, it’s literally impossible not to sometimes. but, do every assignment as soon as you get them. don’t push them aside and do them last minute; it will mentally drain you and overwhelm you. do them as soon as you can, so you can a) focus on other important assignments/exams or b) be stress and homework free
5. make friends!!! - it’s not high school anymore, people aren’t scary or judgemental. you’d be surprised by how friendly so many people are. talk to your classmates/lab partners, exchange numbers, go for lunch, grab a coffee, have study dates - they don’t bite!! (also - you can get missed notes or assignments from those people)
happy studying you beautiful people youuuuu (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
School is hard! And it’s even harder to make yourself pick up those books and start studying.. So this is how I get ready to revise:
Get Comfy!
wearing uncomfortable clothes will ruin your concentration
who wants to wear jeans all day anyway????
so put on those sweatpants and get cozy!!
my fav outfit: fleece-lined leggings, a tunic sweater, and fuzzy socks!
in the summer I love athletic shorts and a t-shirt
also put your hair up!
I like a braid or my signature study bun
but a ponytail will do
Get Moving!
exercising can help you retain information!
as seen here
make sure to keep it light not so much that you’re sweating
do 15 jumping jacks, 10 sit-ups, and 5 push-ups!
or take a quick walk around the house
trust me, it will make your day ten times better
Snack Time!
make it healthy
too much sugar will make you feel crummy
go with something that has more vitamins, fiber, and protein!
make some on the weekends to avoid wasting time
some of my favorites
blueberry banana smoothie bowl <– it just says smoothie but add less milk to make it a bowl
banana nut muffins (you can add chocolate chips if you want)
pomegranate
baby carrots and sweet peppers
pistachios!!
trail mix (homemade is the best)
pretzels dipped in cashew butter
tell me if you have more!!
Clear the Area
keep your desk clean
here are some cute organizers! X X X
try not to keep extra supplies on the top of your desk
it can get cluttered really quick!
keep all books, stationery, notes, etc. close at hand
open your windows and let natural light in!
Get Relaxed & Pumped!!
save a few motivating quotes and read them
turn off your phone!!!
take 2 minutes to breathe and listen
drink some water!!
START!
do one easy assignment
like a worksheet
then move on to something creative
write part of an essay or work on a project
now, do your hardest assignment
and Finish It!!!!
do something simpler
do another worksheet
revise and condense from today’s lesson!
work on things you have to memorize
vocabulary
use flashcards or other methods like summary foldables (one of my favs thanks sareena! @studyign)
After Studying
time to relax!
clean up your space
read!
go on tumblr (you’ve earned it)
watch netflix or youtube
paint your nails
spend some time on your hobbies
get some SLEEP
YOU’RE DONE
all the pre-studying shouldn’t take more then half an hour
don’t procrastinate!
take breaks when studying (I suggest the pomodoro method)
most of all, HAVE FUN STUDYING
Much Love!
Elise @studysystem
and get your shit together

YAAAAAS JESUS
02.02.16 busy class day. did 35 minutes of yoga when i woke up, then synoptic II, calc II, and astronomy. recopied my met notes (above) when i got back, took notes for my prognosis briefing tomorrow (eek!!!), and started my calc homework. tomorrow means 35 minute prognosis in front of my class, and an hour class of boxing, then an hour class of yoga. wish me luck for the prognosis hehe.
02.01.16 happy February!! today i did my first GIS assignment, took an astronomy quiz, recopied calc and astronomy notes, and watched half my class do weather briefings. i also did 35 minutes of yoga and had my first boxing class! i love the idea behind it, it’s all about empowering women through boxing. it’s definitely quite the workout. i need to prepare for my prognostic weather briefing wednesday and register to go to a storm conference in March.
Self-Motivation
I have had a huge amount of people messaging me asking how they can be motivated to revise for exams, or to work when they get home. Here’s a post with some tips that will hopefully help you guys out!
JUST START: Maybe you are lying on the sofa watching Netflix, on your phone warm in bed, or curled up with a great book. The hardest thing to do is to start working when you just don’t want to, but if you ‘just start’ it can really flip your attitude. The process of cleaning up your desk and getting your books out to study can focus your mind, and get your head in the right place ready to work and revise. I often find that if I just start, it immediately becomes a lot easier to keep going.
SET GOALS AND FOCUS: It is really hard to motivate yourself if you have no set goal or aspiration to aim for and accomplish. By setting yourself goals you give yourself a reason to work, and this will immediately increase your motivation. Once you know what you are aiming for, try and keep those goals in the back of your mind all the time, and use them whenever you are feeling demotivated. Don’t be shy or conservative with these goals either - aim and dream big!
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS: Keeping a journal, or just some type of daily reminder of what you are aiming for and what progress you have made so far will really help you maintain your motivation. Being able to write down your thoughts will help organise the things you have to do, and reading through it at times when you’re feeling demotivated will help stimulate you and remind you why you are working so hard. It will also allow you to see how far you have come, motivating you to keep going in the same productive and positive direction, giving you a sense of achievement.
DON’T WORK ALONE: It can be hard to motivate yourself to work sometimes, so having a study-partner to give you that extra ‘push’ on the days you don’t feel so motivated can be invaluable. You don’t have to necessarily work with them, as you may work more efficiently alone; but having that person that you can rely on to tell you when you are procrastinating will really help just get you going.
FIND YOUR MANTRA: I have found that you can really get yourself motivated a lot, just by telling yourself that you are good enough, and that you can and will accomplish what you are aiming for. Make yourself a mantra which you can say to yourself to motivate yourself. It doesn’t have to be long or complex at all, just a little phrase or quote that you can write down, think in your head etc. to get yourself wanting to start studying.
SPLIT UP TASKS: If you sit down at your desk with an absolutely huge project to complete you will feel demotivated, and it would be easy to just think that there’s no point in starting to attempt the huge task. Instead, split up larger pieces of work into small chunks. This will make each individual task a lot more manageable, and it will mean you can ‘tick-off’ more tasks from your to-do list, which will give you a greater sense of achievement, motivating you more.
REWARD YOURSELF: It can be really hard to just study or revise all day. If you set rewards for yourself then these can be used to motivate yourself to work through the things you have to do, and finish all your tasks. These rewards can be anything; from allowing yourself to go out with friends in the afternoon/evening, or having a piece of chocolate cake if you finish all your homework.
HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE: You can do this by making a public announcement of your goals/aspirations in a big way, or just by telling your parents that you are going to be revising for the next 3 hours. As long as you tell someone else, then you will be held accountable. The people you told know that you are meant to be studying/working and will be expecting you to be doing so, this will therefore make you motivated to work and stick to what you said you were going to do.
LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES: Everyone makes mistakes - it is completely normal and expected/ The key thing to do is not to lose motivation and feel bad for yourself. You need to accept the bad result/outcome, and choose to learn from it. Analyse your actions leading up to the mistake/bad test result etc. and see what you can do better next time. If you are feeling bad about it, then let yourself really feel it, and use that as motivation - to never have to feel like that again.

hi! because of my english [foreign language] teacher at school, i’ve had a lot of experience with mind maps. they’re a very useful tool i’ve found for studying, + i’ve developed a personal strategy to making them that i wanted to share with you guys! imo, there’s no right way to making one, this is just what i’ve found works better for myself, u can always adapt it + see what suits u better!
why should i make mind maps?
they’re a great way to connect ideas, summarize information + link concepts in a very visual way! so, great for visual learners but other types too
they are very customizable + u can include pics, drawings, symbols, colours, different arrows, etc etc
they can give you an overview of large a subject at once while also holding lots of information
because of the point above ^^^^ they can save u lots of times when reviewing bc u don’t need to read your [long] notes over + over, just glance at ur mind map and make the connections in ur head
when u make a mind map it helps understand info at a deeper level than when [traditional] note taking + remember it better
mind mapping essentials
first of all, as usual, u don’t need lots of expensive + different coloured pens + highlighters!! just one black pen + a few colours [optional but preferred] should do, or u can use pencils or whatever u have!
blank paper is great but u can also use graph paper or anything u prefer, ir you’re like me and can’t write straight in a white piece of paper
other tools like a ruler can be great help too, use what u feel comfortable with
1) making the draft
first i usually make a draft in pencil so that i can get a sense of how much space everything takes up + it doesn’t matter if i fuck up. when making this i write everything i will later not caring so much abt the ~aesthetic but i try to write neatly so it takes up the same space as later
i usually start with the topic in the center of the page because it lets you branch out all around it, but sometimes i’ve found it better to write it at the top depending on how much info i have + how i want to organize it. write the topic in big handwriting so it stands out
define what ur subtopics are + write them all around your main topic, connecting them to it with arrows
start branching from each subtopic using key words, not full sentences/paragraphs. connect the key words with each other if suitable.
u can write connectors in the arrows so it makes more sense; this helps you really condense the information + figure out what’s important + what’s not
try not to include examples unless they’re very crucial
2) making the mind map
after finishing the draft, see if u need to move anything bc of space or if there’s something unnecessary that u can remove
start rewriting the mind map using fancy fonts, different types of arrows, colour coding, anything that u find useful or just to make it prettier
if u end up with any blank spaces u can fill them with diagrams, little drawings to illustrate what u wrote + help u remember better afterwards, printed pictures that u can glue, or even some cute washi tape [if u have washi tape, which i don’t so it’s not necessary]
and that’s it! u have ur mind map ready! congrats!
personal tips + advice
make a draft first if u have the time only - to me it’s better because while i’m redoing it i’m already studying, but it can be time consuming
it doesn’t matter if ur mind map is pretty or messy, has drawings or not, has colour coding or it’s all in black ink as long as u understood everything u wrote down + it helps u study
if u don’t have different colour pens u can make some words bold/bigger/underlined to make them stand out, use different fonts, circle titles or draw a cloud around them, use banners etc etc
if u do use colours try not to overdo it + use colour coding creating a key: for example, blue for the main topic, light blue for subtopics and light green for any other words that u want to make stand out
don’t use too many different fancy fonts either, choose one or two that compliment each other and stick with them! [cursive + lowercase, then everything else with ur normal handwriting]
don’t write long sentences or paragraphs bc u may end up feeling like ur just rewriting ur notes - key words + abreviations are ur friends. this way, you’ll have to think about what you’re doing and it’s easier to connect different concepts!
if taking time to make the mind map super pretty w lots of drawings helps u, do it! if it doesn’t, don’t! it will still do its purpose!

01.28.2016 had an uber productive day! loved my yoga class last night and decided ill be signing up for women's boxing at my school. got two extra credit points for doing an equation on the board in calc, which felt really amazing since i was the only one who got it! did more of my calc homework as well as recopied my meteorology notes into a notebook. by the way--i feel like met is going to be super hard this semester. it's allllll forecasting. oh and i did my reading quiz for astronomy for extra credit! tomorrow is a light day, just a half hour of weather briefing, so I'll be sure to do my astronomy paper and finish my calc homework.
trust me on this 🦄
01.27.2016 no classes again today! did half an hour of yoga, and I have an hour class tonight. copied over my calc notes from yesterday’s lecture and did my presemester exam for astronomy. put all my exams from my syllabuses on my calendars. im about halfway through the calc assignment that’s due next week. tomorrow is my first day of synoptic meteorology 2, can’t wait to get back into it!!

what’s the pomodoro method?
the pomodoro method is a way of studying
you work, take a break, work again, and take another break
here is a cool infographic about the pomodoro method + another one!!
you can watch this video or read this for more
when should i use it?
it’s perfect if you have a lot of small different tasks to do
or a large amount of material to cover for a final exam, midterm, etc.
or if you’re looking for a way to stay focused while studying
how does it work?
set your timer to 25 minutes (this is suggested but you can change it to whatever you want)
work until you hear the timer go off
take a five minute break
repeat
every four pomodoros, take a longer break
are there any apps that i can use to time it?
pomodorable
pomodone
pomodoro keeper
focus booster
clearfocus
simple pomodoro
tomighty
some ideas for what to do on your break:
play with your pets
grab a snack
tidy up your study space
stretch
i would avoid using your phone because you can get v distracted!!
